Wursthall San Mateo Reviews from The Last Year
Been to Wursthall many times, and it's always a good option
Been to Wursthall many times, and it's always a good option in San Mateo downtown. Their sausages are all pretty good, and their triple-fried potatoes are usually a crowd favorite, although the last time I came by, their potatoes were a bit of a miss. Their house made egg spaetzle is always a hit, and we order it every time. We've also enjoyed their deviled eggs, pretzel, and a few of their salads. I unfortunately wouldn't recommend their spicy chicken bites; we've ordered them on 2 separate occasions and didn't like them either time. They are dry, coated in seasoning, and overall unpleasant. Wursthall also has a big selection of beers and cocktails, which are all reasonably priced. You order yourself on Toasttab via a QR code, and staff members very promptly bring your items to you. Seating is bench-style with a few tables lining the wall.
The food is always great.
We had Chicken Schnitzel and spaetzle. Been there several times and service is always at its best.

we went around 7:30 on a sunday night, parking isn't terribly hard to find but you might need to circle a bit since it's around downtown area. the interior is super big, tons of seating. it was busy but it was still easy to find seating for our group of 6. ordering is from your phone off QR codes, so it's pretty quick and convenient. our food came within 10-15 minutes, so pretty fast. hot korean chicken bites: 4/5 the chicken was juicy and the outside was crispy. it wasn't too spicy, but i wish it had a bit more flavor than just "spice". it went well with dipping sauces hot italian sausage: 3/5 the sausage itself was good but personally wasn't a fan of the peppers on top. the mustard was quite good though. porcetta: 4/5 it was a solid sausage, especially dipped with the mustard aioli thrice fried potatoes: 4/5 the potatoes were really good, i just wish it was slightly crispier and they salted the potatoes mustard aioli: 5/5 really good, get this yogurt sauce 3/5: mediocre, not bad but the mustard aioli is definitely better all in all, food was solid and would recommend if you're craving some wursts
I don't know how this place stays open.
I know locals avoid it like the plague now. How long can they survive on unsuspecting tourists? I gave it two chances and both times the bathroom was dirty. My rule of thumb is that if the bathroom is dirty the kitchen probably is too. The food was consistent, consistently sub par that is. The service was prompt but not friendly and we felt rushed. The sky high prices were the final straw. I will usually give restaurants three chances before writing them off but for this one it's two strikes and you're out.
If you are looking for variety of beer options and laid
If you are looking for variety of beer options and laid back vibe food place, this is where you can go. The service is fast. There is a water station for you to serve yourself. Food can be ordered online via QR code, and your order can be paid separately. It's super convenient for big group setting or happy hour event.

Came here with a group of 6 friends and got two pretzels, one with the spicy queso and another with the black pepper honey butter, and two kenji Korean chicken apps to share and quantity was good! We all got individual items and I got the chipotle pepper wurst and it was tasty! It was my first time trying a wurst and I liked how juicy it was, and the spice and peppers added a lot more flavor. Service was quick and the space is big and gets crowded. Would come back again!
Wursthall is a bierhaus with Californian influences.
Lots of indoor long tables with benches as well as a couple of outdoor tables. After you are seated by the friendly staff, grab the QR code on your table and place your order and pay right on the spot. Your order will be brought out to you. You can also get your water order in (no charge) along with your food order. If you want dessert, place it when you're just about ready for it, because they make your order right when it's placed. We ordered the chicken schnitzel, deviled eggs, wurst, and not pictured, the spaetzle with cheese. The schnitzel was perfectly breaded, side salad tossed with light lemon dressing. The deviled eggs were delightfully creamy, the spaetzle went well with the schnitzel. Let's just say when I come back, I'm definitely getting the wurst. I didn't think I would like it this much. But I should have known, it is what they should be good at here. I would also like to try Kenji's Korean Hot Chicken bites or the sandwich. After all, even though he is no longer the owner, the recipes are his or "Serious Eats inspired techniques". If you don't know about Serious Eats, just do a search. I'd also like to try to get a reservation to get into their speakeasy, which I think is supposed to be underneath the restaurant.

2.5 stars A German beer hall with picnic table seating & an exciting menu, at least when I took a preliminary looksie online. Wursthall had me at "hello," but lost me the minute I took my first bite. Order & pay on your phone by scanning the QR code. It didn't take long for food to be brought to our table. Impossible Turkish-ish Sausage ($16), vegan down to the mayo & split-top bun, was the best item I tried, but the side of potato salad was unanimously the worst item my group tried; al dente to the point of being crunchy, & the only flavor profile was "mustard." It pains me to say nothing else was to our liking. The plant based Kenji's Korean Hot Bites ($13) were epically bad, & the Deviled Eggs ($7 for four pieces), Roasted Beets ($11), & my bf's Currywurst ($14) sat unfinished. Hot mustard & Wood-Fired Pretzel ($7) were a traditional match but the honey butter didn't pair well & was served cold & not easily dippable. Dinner was one bummer after the next, so much so that we joked that Wursthall was the worst of 'em all.
Friday night we just needed some good beers and indulgent
Friday night we just needed some good beers and indulgent food to pair with - you can get both here. It's a clean and spacious interior. It's also one of those QR code menu and online ordering platforms. Order/Pay and the food will come. No problem here, if you can use your phone, you'll know how to order. It's nice to not need to flag down a server. My favorites were the thrice-fried potatoes, korean chicken sandwich, and the porchetta wurst. Out of all the available sides, the thrice-fried potatoes were the best. If you don't eat anything else, at least eat this! You'll salivate at just how crispy the crust on those things were. Fluffy potato-ey inside, it's what potato lovers dream of. Do yourself a favor and order the currywurst: potatoes topped with wurst and curry ketchup, yum! the potato salad side is a close second -- so creamy and refreshing with a good bite. The Korean chicken sandwich was well seasoned, chicken was crispy, (a little messy to eat from the sauce) but hey.. we are here to get dirty with it.. this is a not a fancy knife and fork place. Porchetta sausage is so good and earthy, definitely paired well with the lemon, fried shallots, and herbs on top. Bacon and sesame sauerkraut is nice and so was the chickpea salad side, although we couldn't finish those.. We got the sauerkraut quesadilla which sounded so genius. If only they added more kraut over the cheese as it gets pretty rich.. To down all this food we got the great notion mighty mango sour and another beer that I can only describe as a sangria type of drink. Not so much a hops or IPA person so I like that they included some fruity/citrusy beers for drinkers like me. I'm much impressed over their wide alcohol selection. Love it!
Food and beer was solid, the sauerkraut on my dog was
Food and beer was solid, the sauerkraut on my dog was great, I love that. Clean tables, all that. The QR code, non person ordering through your phone, I hate that. It's so distanced you from the establishment. No one asks how's the food, no one comes to refill water or things like that. They just drop it to your table and you've already paid and tipped first. I know this was the Covid way of doing things but I find it so underwhelming. Again, good food, beer, clean place. (Although here on yelp it says 6 violations). Probably would eat again.
I went to Wursthall recently and was pleasantly surprised
I went to Wursthall recently and was pleasantly surprised at how much they improved since the last time I visited during the first few months of their opening. They have a bunch of really great food options now, like sauerkraut quesadillas, all types of sausages and a really great salty pretzel. Oh, and you can also get sides with your meals like fried potatoes, potato salad and chips. All the hazy IPAs I tried were good. The service was great. You order using a QR code on the table and the food quickly gets served to you. The really great thing is that if you come in a large party, you can pay for your order separately through the QR code. The spot was pretty large. There were a bunch of tables and seating available. You can help yourself to water at the bar or order through the QR code. It seems like a popular place to go for happy hour for those that work in the downtown San Mateo area.
So this is a very modern ordering situation where you order
So this is a very modern ordering situation where you order via your cell phone with a QR code and wait staff only approaches you to drop off your food. I ordered the currywurst appetizer and a pretzel with spicy cheese. The pretzel with the spicy cheese was very good. The currywurst was a new experience for me and I enjoyed it, but would not run out to get it again. The triple fried potatoes that come with the currywurst were like nothing I had experienced of the bratkartoffeln in Germany. I enjoyed one of their beers on draft and it was delicious. My significant other ordered the bratwurst meal. He did not enjoy his meal and the haus potato salad did not taste good to him at all. He spent the rest of the night and the next day struggling to digest his meal. Someone else in our party had the potato salad and also complained about it. Based on his experience we will likely never go here again to eat a meal. We were a large party of about 12 people and they were able to seat us with their long tables with minimal problem. The long benches are not very comfortable but are very accommodating for large groups. It was a very impersonal experience. The hands off ordering and interactions with the staff reminds me of how we had to live during the pandemic with minimal interactions. To me it feels like the self service kiosk at the grocery store. That being said, it is in no way a bargain of a meal despite the limited staff supporting us and the picnic style seating.
Best thing was the thrice fried potatoes.
That's saying something for a place known for wursts. When we asked the server for recommendations she said the smashed burgers . Unfortunately will not be returning to this one. The pretzels were nice but we didn't particularly enjoy anything else that would make be return. It was quite cold and they don't serve any hot beverages. Another minus for me.
The Best of the Wurst!
Easily the best restaurant we found in our four days to the Bay Area! Wursthall is incredible in their meat skills, amazing brats that are rich, full of flavor, and done just right to give a twang and enjoyable bite. I've never had any sort of German fare on this level which says something coming from German and Swiss on both parents. I had decent expectations coming here on my good friends recommendation and got blown out of the water. The beers are quite decent, nothing amazing like some we have in the midwest, Chicago's Moody Tongue and Indianapolis Centerpoint breweries for example, but plenty easy to drink and offering strong variety. I really love seeing dark stuff on nitro and bright fruity ales from the same wall. I'm still mesmerized by the indulgent texture of the brats here, simply award winning stuff. My house crafted lemon slaw was unique and extra tangy, fit perfect with the meats. I sampled quite a bit of the menu between all five of us and cannot fault a dish. Service and atmosphere as casual, friendly, and accessible like California does best. We all had good times and highly recommend Wursthall!

We finally made it here after years of following Kenji's cooking journey. And while he's not an owner of the restaurant any longer, his impact on the menu was clear. All of the food was delicious from appetizers to dessert! The place was open and airy and food all came out super quick!

Great Service - amazing dinner!!
Read about the site in NYT and bought a reservation at Mother Wolf in LA 2 days later. Worked great and the food was amazing!!!
Worked perfectly!
Got the reservation (that I couldn't get anywhere else) and was able to entertain a group of friends at the infamous Bern's Steakhouse.
Got into Nobu Malibu
Wonderful! My parents are visiting and we have wanted to go to Nobu Malibu for years. I tried getting a reservation myself but it was next to impossible. So glad I was able to buy a reservation on appointment trader for a decent price!
Very easy
Was very hesitant going into this experience but am glad to say that it worked out very well ! will definitely use appointment trader in the future
Fabulous Lunch
I was veeeeeerry skeptical that this would work, particularly at a restaurant as hard to get into as Nobu Malibu, and it was perfect! We had lunch outside on the patio and it was fabulous!
Great reviewer team
Just wanted to take a second to shout out the reviewer team. Even though they probably review hundreds of listings and bids a day, they still take the time to leave great comments and respond relatively quickly. Thanks!
Incredible
I got a reservation to Don Angie, which I've been trying to book for weeks! I am very happy with this service.
Best platform out there!
Super simple, easy, and fast to secure reservations for hard-to-get restaurants and locations!
This app is life changing
This app has opened my world up to so many wonderful new experiences I would never have the chance to have without access to this awesome app! 10/10!
Worked perfectly
Was a little nervous at first but was pleased to see that the booking went through flawlessly.
Highly recommended.
Success on Short Notice

So glad I came across this app :)
Quick table in Miami
I didn’t have my hopes high as it was a party of 4. In 24 hours I had a carbone reservation available! I was very happy as my family really wanted to come here
Prime time, great meal

Worked perfectly to get into Carbone. So delighted
perfect
Worked well, got me into a restaurant with no availability
I was skeptical, and I still don't really know how they managed to find this hard-to-find reservation, but it was a win-win from my point of view, and I'll use this service again.
Last minute reservation for Delilah Las Vegas
Got a last minute reservation, dinner for 2 at Delilah Las Vegas: super impressed! The process was simple, transaction seamless. We had an amazing time! Couldn’t be happier! 😍
It works!
Ok at this point I've attended a reservation purchased on AT by a friend and sold a reservation personally. Both worked pretty smoothly, nothing sketchy about it. A few areas for improvement including a way to more directly communicate between buyers and sellers, but the app always seems to be in development. AT customer support is really(!) responsive and helpful too if you have questions!
Money transfer
As a seller, I like the fact i have the ability now to transfer money out of my AT account and into a bank account. Makes getting the money much easier then the process before.
Love this app
Got to go to places otherwise unreachable
Easy Access
Very easy to get into one of the hardest restaurants to reserve in New York.
Whose name will my reservation be under when I arrive at the venue?
It can be under your name or a name you choose! Some reservation offers already include the AppointmentTrader Transfer Service which will transfer the reservation in to your name. If its not included you can add it on after buying the reservation for a small fee. One thing on that though: As many reservations become available at last minute, taking a reservation in someone else name is quick and great for privacy. Most reservations on AT are listed with a virtual phone number, so all you need to do is present the phone number at the hostess stand and you are good to go!

I will give you 50% of ALL of my PROFITS if you teach me how to make profits?
LOL. Thank you The New Yorker.
Appointment
Transferring reservations is not supported in AT. Why not just use the name in the AT screenshot?
Buyers interested in Bern's Steakhouse: PLEASE READ
Same goes for 4 Charles and I Sodi
Prepaid Reservation Fee
Agreed. Ultimately not addressing this month after month is clearly resulting in a drop in certain venue’s rankings & sales.
Congrats on 3 mil
🍾🍾🍾🍾🍾🍾🧨🧨🧨 now on to 30 mill!
Need to cancel a bid, not getting a response… how do I do it?
Click on "Take off the Market Option" in your portfolio
Working on your bid?
Your bid has been “matched” with a reservation. From the time a reservation has been located, the seller of the reservation must connect with moderator to give transfer information for reservation. If the seller;however, does NOT respond to reservation transfer, then your bid is reprocessed and returns to the first step, which is connecting your request to a reservation.
Process after bid is accepted.
Hey @EvocativeFold67, welcome to appointmenttrader! Once the reservation is in your portfolio, you definitely own the timeslot, the review team would not have approved the trade if the reservation wasn't confirmed - so you are going :-) Judging from your post you bid today and are going tomorrow - don't worry as long as you initiated the name transfer, you are good - the transfer service has to work with the opening hours of the reservation team of the respective venue. You will likely see the transfer confirmation a couple hours before your reservation time.
Where do the Reservations on AppointmentTrader come from?
Mostly from people who don't need their reservations or appointments any longer. AT has no relationship with places listed and acts as a platform connecting buyers and sellers making sure that listed reservations are real and that privacy is not compromised when transacting.
What happens if my bid expires unanswered?
Hey @FluffyStar64, thanks for the question! When you place your bid the amount gets transferred in a deposit account, the second you either cancel your bid or a few minutes after the bid expires the funds are moved back into your main account from where you can refund it to your payment method or use for other transactions.
