TIMBERYARD Edinburgh Reviews from The Last Year
A Flawless Experience
I dined solo, sat at the bar on a Saturday evening. Being companionless I had the opportunity to notice all staff working diligently and seeming to take care in everything they did, from wiping glasses and preparing drinks to explaining the menu and making wine suggestions. The food was beautiful in every way but it really was the staff, décor, ambience and general ethos that gelled perfectly with the food to make my dining experience as memorable as it was. There were an abundance of genuine touches that were all appreciated. I felt very looked after by the barman, who allowed me to try the wines by the glass before I ordered.
Good if you are not hungry
The ambiance is perfect, the food also - But there is very little of it. The "5 course" menu is actually a tasting menu, each "course" being 4 bites maximum. What a pity to be served so little food, so slowly and at such prices. The whole vibe is retro to 1980s. The sommelier is rude, patronising and insulting. Its an experience best not repeated, for sure not on an empty stomach
Great atmosphere and delicious food
The atmosphere was relaxed, the food was delicious with a creative presentation and the drink pairings were perfect. We ate at multiple Michelin rated restaurants while on our UK trip, but this was one of my favorites!
It's hard to find the words to describe the care and intent
It's hard to find the words to describe the care and intent of the food served here. Staff is amazing and it is so obvious that everyone loves what they are serving- and for good reason.
Fantastic experience
Can’t praise them enough. The food, waiting staff and venue were all excellent. Had the 7 course tasting with an additional cheese course and all were excellent and well explained by the staff. Special occasion only as pricey but well worth it.
Creative, Real Tasty & a Definite Winner
While others’ experiences at Timberyard may not have lived up to expectations, ours was phenomenal and was certainly better in almost every way to the 2* Michelin dinner we had the night before, especially when it comes to the food. Timberyard was a great way to start our Edinburgh foodie experience and it’s easy to see why it earned a Michelin 1* this past year. Simply put an OUTSTANDING meal from start to finish. Such attention to detail, freshness, creativity and above all taste. Chef James Murray and his team (both kitchen and front of house) are true culinary professionals! Congrats on the star (one of many in your future) and thanks for a truly satisfying meal. Last night’s dinner: 1. A series of MOST excellent “snacks” that include bread, Comte and vin jaune egg, fermented vegetables, salami, whipped chicken liver, and wild smoked salmon 2. Green Asparagus and lovage (best asparagus I’ve ever had) 3. Scallop & tripe 4. John Dory fish and “chicken of the woods” mushroom (better than every course I had at a 2* recently and the meal’s standout dish) 5. Guinea foul and smoked yogurt 6. Meadow sweet with yogurt (unique & tasty) 7. Cherry blossom with caramelized white chocolate
A perfect lunch!
This restaurant is located not far from the Edinburgh Castle. We had a nice (but most windy) 20 min walk from the castle down to the restaurant. The entrance is nothing fancy at all and in fact very low key. The interior is very raw and minimalist which is something that I like (used to be an old warehouse as I understand). Tables are set up so spaciously so you won't have any feeling of overly crowded atmosphere. We chose the set menu as opposed to the tasting menu... All our selection were cooked to perfection and I must say it is above our expectation. We started off with the Scottish whelk, which was very tender but yet not overcooked to a state where it is too tough. It still remains some texture in it but not being too chewy. This became the start of the our very nice lunch. For appetizers, we had the guinea fowl & pork terrine and grilled mussels. The mussels were clearly the star... it was so delicious and the way it's cooked (grilled with smoked butter) is just simple yet tasty... pork terrine was also good but its is as expected. Main courses include monk fish and roe deer... which I think the meat dish was exactly my cup of tea... and it went so well with the 2018 Monferrato Rosso Piangalardo. The dessert were also very nice and it served as a perfect ending for this unexpectedly nice lunch!
More than the sum of it’s parts!
The setup of this restaurant is clearly a passion project with its gorgeous setting (tastefully retaining its heritage & character); & there is a hum (not too loud) that is a real pleasure. Service is 2nd to none. The team here have a joyful passion for all that Timberyard offers; & they infect you quickly. You will likely have 4+ different people attending your table through the evening, buts its seamless. Oh, & the food is brilliant. Seasonal, local, creative & delicious. The full package
Underwhelming and samey where’s the story?
If you sign up to fine dinning you know your paying over the odds for tiny meals carefully rendered, that could (irrelevant of the courses your bank balance can afford ) all fit single layered on to one plate. You expect to be confronted by a list of techniques and ingredients which seemingly compensate for the question, “Why am I paying this much?” and hope that on some level it’s worth it. In Timberyard it’s not. There’s no wow factor, the staff are oddly serious bordering on disdainful perhaps to give the food sufficient importance and there’s no exciting free (sic) amouse bouche to keep you interested- you do get a free tea bag on your way out! We had cheesy profiteroles, seaweed water, mussels, parfait, teeny, tiny quail legs in yoghurt, cheese, ricotta mousse and tiramisu. The cheese was the best bit an we paid extra for that £8.00 a slice. I’m not complaining about the cost roughly £240 but there really was nothing spectacular. The second glass of red wine was very nice and the waiter who poured it was willing to answer some questions but that sadly does not make up for the rest of it. Underwhelming, needs a rethink.
Details Delight with Delicious Lunch
Timberyard was a wonderful lunch experience - from the inviting architecture starting at the brilliant red entry door, into the old warehouse space, beautifully transformed into the cozy, but modern restaurant. You do need time to eat here. The menu is in courses 4 or 6, and you can order fewer from a separate small menu - all great choices. The meal unfolds beautifully with care given with every single thing brought to the table. This is not a place for someone who is antsy, or who doesn't care about their food or presentation. Every course is presented with care and the details are most charming and delicious. My lovage broth with light cheese and tomatoes was memorable, guinea hen delicious and elderflower and strawberry dessert, a highlight. My sixteen year old daughter enjoyed it as much as I did. My only irritant was that in the pacing, our wait of 20 minutes between the 1st and 2nd courses was too extreme.
Beautiful setting, great staff but terrible food. Do not visit here.
The setting was wonderful and the staff were outstanding. The service was really really good. Teeing up what many would think, an amazing experience. However, you don’t just pay to be sat in a nice place and be served well by trained staff. You are there to eat some amazing, interesting and thought provoking food (particularly at the extortionate pricing). The food was dismal. Completely lacked any meaningful flavour. I would go as far to say some of the courses, on our five course tasting menu, were quite frankly inedible. I’m all for experimental flavouring and yes of course you can’t please everyone. But I would bet my bottom dollar not a single customer sat round us that evening enjoyed all their courses whilst visiting the Timberyard. I’ll give it to them, the bread and butter was great… and the homemade vanilla ice cream with “foraged” rhubarb was decent enough. But the rest of the meal was shocking. Having been lucky enough to eat in some amazing restaurants over the years I know enough to know that when food is bad, it’s bad. And it definitely was not just me who felt the food was terrible whilst visiting this establishment. I’m never one to usually write a review with distaste (pardon the pun) but when you walk out of a restaurant feeling like you have been robbed. Not too dissimilar to the feeling of walking out a casino having stuck it all on red, only for black to come in. I really feel it’s my duty to warn others off. Don’t pretend to be something you’re not. Back to the drawing board i would say. Basics done right and all that. I would take a leaf out of Craig Millar’s cook book. He’s done it right. This place has good potential, but please don’t go and waste your money like i did. Certainly not until they re-do the menu.
Mediocre restaurant
Very noisy and food was mediocre at best, the toilets very difficult to access as down many rickety stairs and would have been impossible for disabled access. Overall not a great experience
A memorable birthday meal
From the first moment to the last, our experience was absolutely spot on. It's tough to maintain a fine balance between a friendly and warm atmosphere but staying switched on and professional at the same time, but the front of house of Timberyard has done it. Creative cooking without any pretentiousness, keeps your palate excited all the way through without once being too much. Excellent bread and butter got us hooked from the get go, and every successive course got better and better. Wine list is extensive and full of hidden gems, with ridiculously good values. If you're a sucker for great ambience, friendly service and excellent food, this is a must visit in Edinburgh. Thanks for looking after us so well!
Timberyard, (very) overpriced for what you get
My wife and I went for her birthday in March 2024, our first (and last) visit. It is a very pretty venue, well laid out (very moody lighting). Now with mood lighting comes the issue of reading the menu (seeing every guest use their phone light to read by, takes the edge off the mood). If your going to have the place in semi darkness at least have the decency to provide (low) lighting at the table to read the menu! The staff were good, we felt well looked after. The food was super tasty (oh it really was) however there is not enough of it. We had the five courses, which came with snacks and we both left hungry and here I thought the days of very small portions (spending a lot of money) and leaving hungry were a thing of the past (but it appears not). I must tell you what made me laugh, neither of us likes or eats a dessert (a shame as they looked nice). So we opted for the "cheese serving" (that last word becomes very important, very quickly), the cost for this is £10 per person. Now I have to admit they did not charge us the £10 each as we swopped the cheese for the dessert (if that makes sense). What arrived was one piece of Brie each, smaller in size than a Dairylea Triangle (although taller). One piece of one cheese each (hence the importance of the word serving). So not a cheese selection (or cheese board) or any other connotation of what you normally get in a restaurant when you opt for cheese at the end of your meal. I laughed rather than cry. To top that off, we asked for a Port (for the cheese), to be told "I think we have a bottle kicking about, its not something we normally have, its left over from an event. We don't have Port as its not sustainable (really?) and we like to know everything we have is from a sustainable source". So, would we go back...No Is it a nice place to eat, a pretty venue....Yes Is the food tasty.....Oh Yes Is it "worth it"....No, we are fortunate in Edinburgh there are numerous "high end" places to eat, including other Michilin Stared restaurants. Back to Leith and "The Kitchin" and "Martin Wisharts" we go. Shame really had a lot of potential, it really did.
Small portion, average food and basic interior
Lack of generosity! Lack Of amouse bouche with counting bread as a course or amouse and also the small portions was all very disappointing. Interior: Minimalistic and car park setting interior With awful cheap light. No paintings Or wall mountains. Small table for 4 persons. Struggled with wine glasses , dishes and bread plates. Uncomfortable chairs, the tiny cushion did not help. High Noise level from background conversations due to high ceilings and noise reduction surfaces. Music also unusual to say the least Service was very much a miss and not what one would expect for the Michelin star: Wrong orders served and then corrected and two of four dishes was served at a time for table for four, this would be unheard off with other one star restaurants. Red wine was served like it was out of a fridge- too cold , we fed back and wad told by waiter that cellar is exposed and as it 5’C outside, i Would be worried about the quality of their red wines. Starter of pink fir potato- tiny portion., Tasted good but on the simple side . Hogget flat bread was gamey and oily , tasted like a very gamey lamb burger. It was felt that it has not much finesse and one diner could not eat it. Mains- tiny portions again. Cod was cooked Perfectly but shame about the tiny portion and not much else on the plate. Quail was very small- two tiny leg and breast with Hardly anything else on the plate. Rather a lot fat hidden under the skin and not particularly great to eat. It was a very average dish Deserts The vanilla and rhubarb was excellent and the rum baba is good but serving half the rum baba with clementine syrup and whiskey. Half a rum baba for desert- I think that is poor portioning, how very stingy! Service was average. Last time I was here was 10 years ago and will not be returning!
2/10
overrated overpriced and poor wine choices. was looking forward but totally underwhelmed . some plates decent enough but others were poor poor price - crazy for the offering . wine offering - shockingly bad over priced and poor
The Best. Big wow!!
Quite simply the best dining experience we’ve ever had. Has the full package: sublime and Uber imaginative food, their own single malt whisky, the most extensive wine list, attentive and informed staff giving the perfect service and the most lovely ambiance. Has to be Edinburgh’s eaterie.
Birthday treat
Attentive, knowledgeable staff without being overbearing. Amazing locally sourced and seasonal produce with European wines to match. Beautifully presented taster menu with alternatives for food intolerances. Beautiful setting and ambience and enjoyed the history behind origin of restaurant. Well earned Michelin standard
Love this industrial and rustic restaurant!
Located at the foot of Edinburgh castle, and a 8-10mins walk from Victoria street. We ordered the tasting menus and paid GBP 120 each. It has a combination of communal and individual plates; love ALL of them! Place has an industrial rustic feel and a fire place in the middle of the restaurant. Place is very charming and not pretentious. Staffs are very friendly and attentive. Many chatted with us and ensured we have a wonderful dining experience. Do check out the washroom. Intended to be slightly dark, but restaurant is very attentive to details (there are water dripping musics recorded from some winery. And water is warm).
So-so
Opted for the 5 course menu rather than the taster as we were eating early on a kid-free night rather than a proper adult time. Food was good and we enjoyed every course and had the cheese as well. We regretted having the matching wines. We are big fans of matching wines but this selection was very poor - we only really enjoyed one; the red. At £80 each, we could certainly have just bought a nicer bottle from their extensive wine list. So overall cost £500 felt not great value; but we did enjoy our night.
Fine dining with a flair and friendliness.
More than worthy of its michelin star. Exquisite food and presentation. Service was not overly formal, which we appreciated. We liked dining at the long and spacious bar (did not at all feel crowded) as it allowed for some pleasant conversations with those working behind the bar. Great people and great conversations!
Lovely building, just inside the red door, and a menu to
Lovely building, just inside the red door, and a menu to appreciate the region. Get the pairing as it is thoughtful to the dish as in ways that you may not understand the wine until you sip it with the food. We enjoyed how thoughtful the flavors were to the old and new of Scotland. My favorite of the night was the potato. My husbands favorite was the lobster. Enjoy!

Great Service - amazing dinner!!
Read about the site in NYT and bought a reservation at Mother Wolf in LA 2 days later. Worked great and the food was amazing!!!
Worked perfectly!
Got the reservation (that I couldn't get anywhere else) and was able to entertain a group of friends at the infamous Bern's Steakhouse.
Got into Nobu Malibu
Wonderful! My parents are visiting and we have wanted to go to Nobu Malibu for years. I tried getting a reservation myself but it was next to impossible. So glad I was able to buy a reservation on appointment trader for a decent price!
Very easy
Was very hesitant going into this experience but am glad to say that it worked out very well ! will definitely use appointment trader in the future
Fabulous Lunch
I was veeeeeerry skeptical that this would work, particularly at a restaurant as hard to get into as Nobu Malibu, and it was perfect! We had lunch outside on the patio and it was fabulous!
Great reviewer team
Just wanted to take a second to shout out the reviewer team. Even though they probably review hundreds of listings and bids a day, they still take the time to leave great comments and respond relatively quickly. Thanks!
Incredible
I got a reservation to Don Angie, which I've been trying to book for weeks! I am very happy with this service.
Best platform out there!
Super simple, easy, and fast to secure reservations for hard-to-get restaurants and locations!
This app is life changing
This app has opened my world up to so many wonderful new experiences I would never have the chance to have without access to this awesome app! 10/10!
Worked perfectly
Was a little nervous at first but was pleased to see that the booking went through flawlessly.
Highly recommended.

Worked well, got me into a restaurant with no availability
I was skeptical, and I still don't really know how they managed to find this hard-to-find reservation, but it was a win-win from my point of view, and I'll use this service again.
Last minute reservation for Delilah Las Vegas
Got a last minute reservation, dinner for 2 at Delilah Las Vegas: super impressed! The process was simple, transaction seamless. We had an amazing time! Couldn’t be happier! 😍
It works!
Ok at this point I've attended a reservation purchased on AT by a friend and sold a reservation personally. Both worked pretty smoothly, nothing sketchy about it. A few areas for improvement including a way to more directly communicate between buyers and sellers, but the app always seems to be in development. AT customer support is really(!) responsive and helpful too if you have questions!
Money transfer
As a seller, I like the fact i have the ability now to transfer money out of my AT account and into a bank account. Makes getting the money much easier then the process before.
Love this app
Got to go to places otherwise unreachable
Easy Access
Very easy to get into one of the hardest restaurants to reserve in New York.
Whose name will my reservation be under when I arrive at the venue?
It can be under your name or a name you choose! Some reservation offers already include the AppointmentTrader Transfer Service which will transfer the reservation in to your name. If its not included you can add it on after buying the reservation for a small fee. One thing on that though: As many reservations become available at last minute, taking a reservation in someone else name is quick and great for privacy. Most reservations on AT are listed with a virtual phone number, so all you need to do is present the phone number at the hostess stand and you are good to go!
Payouts Blocked Because of Sell Through Rate
Does anyone know how AT plans to handle cases where a seller is quitting the platform but has a sell through rate <25%? The error message I got said to fill more bids or find other ways to increase the rate.
Is AT really going to block sellers from withdrawing their money? Especially revenue made before the sell through rate was introduced??
Tune into NBC News - Top Story Tonight 7:40p ET
Let’s go. Get more people placing bids!
I will give you 50% of ALL of my PROFITS if you teach me how to make profits?
LOL. Thank you The New Yorker.
Appointment
Transferring reservations is not supported in AT. Why not just use the name in the AT screenshot?
Buyers interested in Bern's Steakhouse: PLEASE READ
Same goes for 4 Charles and I Sodi
Prepaid Reservation Fee
Agreed. Ultimately not addressing this month after month is clearly resulting in a drop in certain venue’s rankings & sales.
Congrats on 3 mil
🍾🍾🍾🍾🍾🍾🧨🧨🧨 now on to 30 mill!
Need to cancel a bid, not getting a response… how do I do it?
Click on "Take off the Market Option" in your portfolio
Working on your bid?
Your bid has been “matched” with a reservation. From the time a reservation has been located, the seller of the reservation must connect with moderator to give transfer information for reservation. If the seller;however, does NOT respond to reservation transfer, then your bid is reprocessed and returns to the first step, which is connecting your request to a reservation.
Process after bid is accepted.
Hey @EvocativeFold67, welcome to appointmenttrader! Once the reservation is in your portfolio, you definitely own the timeslot, the review team would not have approved the trade if the reservation wasn't confirmed - so you are going :-) Judging from your post you bid today and are going tomorrow - don't worry as long as you initiated the name transfer, you are good - the transfer service has to work with the opening hours of the reservation team of the respective venue. You will likely see the transfer confirmation a couple hours before your reservation time.
Where do the Reservations on AppointmentTrader come from?
Mostly from people who don't need their reservations or appointments any longer. AT has no relationship with places listed and acts as a platform connecting buyers and sellers making sure that listed reservations are real and that privacy is not compromised when transacting.
What happens if my bid expires unanswered?
Hey @FluffyStar64, thanks for the question! When you place your bid the amount gets transferred in a deposit account, the second you either cancel your bid or a few minutes after the bid expires the funds are moved back into your main account from where you can refund it to your payment method or use for other transactions.
