The Lafayette Washington Reviews from The Last Year
First Class
We booked to dine here prior to our trip to DC and must admit that prior to dining we were apprehensive as to whether we would enjoy it or not and thought about cancelling. We were glad we didn’t as everything about our visit was excellent. From the initial greeting when you arrived there was an air of elegance and luxury and we were treated to a first class dining experience. The menu is a little limited but my octopus starter was one of the best I have had in a long time and our steaks that followed were cooked to perfection and were followed by amazing desserts, all of which were accompanied by a great bottle of wine. Service was very attentive but not intrusive and any guidance was given as required. Definitely a nice change from the more noisy restaurants we have experienced on this trip and a sense of luxury in nice surroundings that is welcome from time to time. Would definitely recommend and would return to when back in DC in the future.
Awesome restaurant next to the White House.
The service was great and food was excellent not only the quality but the price is reasonable as well. There's piano playing during dinner, how romantic

I had breakfast at this restaurant while I was staying at the Hay Adams Hotel. The restaurant has a nice ambiance with views overlooking the White House. The fruit juices are freshly squeezed, and the pastries are amazing. When you order tea at the restaurant, they bring you a whole freshly brewed pot. I will definitely be back, everything about the Hay Adams is magical.
Excellent brunch at a historic restaurant in walking
Excellent brunch at a historic restaurant in walking distance of the White House, St. John's Church and Lafayette Square.
Would highly recommend.
Food service and ambience were all fantastic. There was live piano during dinner, homemade bread and a free appetizer to start.
Pretentious!! Went there tonight, party of 1, at 6:30 PM.
Dining room was 95% empty. They asked me if I was staying at the hotel and when the answer was "no" they had no tables available, Whatever........
About a 1-1.
5: Not sure what happened, but The Lafayette is not the same. We loved coming here for holiday brunches, especially for Christmas, but the spread and the set-up are just not what they used to be - before, the variety and the selection of the food items were amazing, each station was replenished quickly and ample for returning patrons, and the decor was on point. However, on our recent visits, the spread has just been looking super scarce - there was some misleading information on raw/seafood bar station, in which one type of crabs was stated to be offered, but it wasn't; also, they weren't fresh and haven't been thawed properly, as we received items that were still frozen and icy. There doesn't seem to be any effort into the decor for the seasonal brunches; I remember the buffet area being super festive and decorated so beautifully, but it's just super plain. Note that when you check-in with the hostess, you are lead to a separate dining/waiting area until your table is ready to be led to the elevators to go up to the brunch area. Service has always been attentive and friendly. With the high price point and the inconsistency of the buffet offerings, we definitely won't be returning. Limited metered street and garage parking available. +inconsistent quality of holiday brunches +reservations required +metered street and garage parking available
Just say yes to oatmeal soufflé! Extraordinary food and
Just say yes to oatmeal soufflé! Extraordinary food and service! One of the best breakfast I have ever eaten!
Wonderful Experience Not To Be Missed
From the initial greeting to the final farewell, our experience was outstanding. The menu is limited but covers primary items well. We had the sea bass accompanied by a very delicious Sancerre wine. One side amply serves two, so we had the fingerling potatoes. Service was superior, attentive but not intrusive. The pianist was accomplished and played music ranging from show tunes to classical, all well played. The ambiance is smooth, quiet, elegant.
Old timey, high end decor.
Wonderful service, quick and attentive. Food arrived quickly and was absolutely divine. 10 out of 10 would recommend
Disappointing.
We can only believe that this was an off day for both the serving staff and the kitchen. The restaurant itself is elegant but half empty on the evening we dined. The service was painfully slow and inattentive. The food took for ever to come out and the vegetables arrived after we had almost finished eating our entrees - and were cold and under cooked! Pretty expensive, and certainly not worth the money.
