THE FAT DUCK CAFE Jammu Reviews from The Last Year
Thank you Heston and the team for an amazing experience
I am not sure I can expand on the fabulous reviews already provided for this experience. This isn't a "meal" or "lunch", it's so much more than that. From the amazing, tentative and friendly service to the food which is simply a taste sensation, to the wonderful wine pairings to the unusual sensorial experiences. It's an event. I am not sure I will ever taste food like this again....but I sincerely hope I do, it was beyond all explanation and expectation. It is that good. Thank you!
Disappointed
Arrived in a party of 4, told to wait outside as someone else was in the entrance hallway, it was raining so wasn’t impressed from the start. When seated the proceedings were explained and the courses were commenced. We chose a wine tasting menu but the wine was poor quality and the Japanese sommelier was difficult to understand. Two of the guys Alex and Peter were great but other staff were rude and non interactive. The food itself was disappointing compared to other Michelin starred restaurants we have eaten in. The trip to the wine cellar (upstairs) was strange and gimmicky. We were waiting for the theatrics and food magic but it wasn’t very forthcoming. We were expecting more than was delivered which may have been a mistake to assume on our part. To finish, the sweets chosen could have been selected out of a standard supermarket chocolate box. Fortunately the £240 service charge was removed from the bill when we mentioned that we didn’t enjoy the experience. I don’t think Gareth Ward or Michel Roux jr have much to worry about.
Question everything…! All is not as it seems…
This was a bucket list treat for my 65th birthday, and oh what a night it was! Culinary wizardry at its absolute finest. This wasn’t a meal, it was a dining experience filled with story-telling, theatrics, games, puzzles, food on a different level to any I’ve ever enjoyed before, and a level of service beyond any expectation. I had deliberately not read reviews, looked at pictures or read menus before I went, and I’d strongly advise you not to either. With that in mind, I’m not going to detail what we ate, or post pictures. If you have a specific question, you can ask me, and I’ll answer with my own opinions. Don’t go with pre-conceived (or other people’s!) ideas in your head, or knowing what you’re going to be given to eat. The restaurant will call you prior to your reservation to ensure you have no allergies or particular foods you don’t like to eat, so menu adjustments can be made if necessary. Allow yourself to be swept up in the sheer amazement of this experience…it’s like no other, anywhere else. And don’t be put off thinking it’ll be an overly-stuffy, formal 3-star restaurant…it’s not… Be prepared to be there for about 4 hours…you don’t want to miss a thing! I want to go again…and again!
Over Priced Tourist Restaurant
Pretentious, Pretentious, Pretentious. Who on earth goes for meal and all the waiters go on about is Heston Blumenthal childhood, every dish comes with a story, yawn! And the food was worst than than the stories. Who wants to eat sand 🤮.
Bucket list venue
Simply the most amazing meal. The setting, the cooking, the wine, the staff - totally worthy of its stars. Worth every single penny.
Great show - not much magic!
Great show - not much magic! On Thursday 14th March we had lunch at The Fat Duck, We were a group of six. The food was interesting, the service and team were very good. The waiting staff demonstrated how good table service should be, they were very knowledgeable and presented the food well. An important element for us was a couple of dietary requirements, which included one member of our party who is in the early stages of pregnancy. These were dealt with exceptionally well on arrival and throughout the meal – amazing attention to detail. However, the magic which I had hoped for was in limited supply. I had heard stories from friends who had visited before, of how, using a variety of ingredients, culinary magic would happen before your eyes. Sadly, this was not my experience. The only magic was the first course the Nitroaperitif. The show was great, and whoever imagined and constructed the presentation has done a great job. Yes, the food was beautifully prepared and presented. The quality of the ingredients was probably the best available. The team presenting and serving the food did a great job. However, for £275 per person, this was an expensive experience. In addition, coffee and tea were extra and there was a discretionary 12.5% service charge. I was looking forward to the magic that I believed Heston Blumental at The Fat Duck had bought to the culinary world, but I was disappointed. In my opinion, at £275 per person, without drinks, without tea or coffee, this is an extremely expensive experience which I will not be partaking of again, I was disappointed. Another element, possibly out of the control of the restaurant team, was the loud and in appropriate behaviour and language of another table close by. In conclusion, it is sometime since I had the opportunity of visiting a three-star Michelin restaurant. In my opinion, my previous experience exceeded my experience at The Fat Duck.
It’s about the people.
Wonderful experience. The international team are fantastic. Service first class. Thank you Heston - fabulous job. Well worth the trip from Perth!
Incredible
On many occasions over the years, I have visited the top ten restaurants in the world, sometimes visiting three Michelin starred restaurants in one day (7 stars in one day) I will literally fly anywhere in the world to eat at the very best. I have flown to San Diego just to try a burger at hodad's, flown to Chicago to eat at a three star, flown to Tel-Aviv to eat at a two star vegan restaurant, flown to Memphis to eat the very best BBQ in the world..I love food It's been my passion, hobby, love and obsession to eat at amazing restaurants for over 25 years, I've been able to do this as a result of working and saving hard. During these amazing 25 years, I have visited the Fat Duck over 20 times. The food at the Duck never disappoints and always amazes me.. there is something so very special at the Duck.. innovation and cooking at it's very best. Although I have been to many other three star restaurants all over the world, the Fat Duck is still my favourite. The staff are unbelievably good, really fantastic and always make us feel so very special when we dine there. I'm looking forward to dining there again soon ❤️
Simply the best culinary experience we've had
My wife and I visited the Fat Duck for my 50th birthday and the experience lived up to everything we expected. From bumping in to one of the staff in Bray for directions, to being welcomed in a relaxing and friendly manner, the food, service and ambiance was exceptional. The Sensorium tasting menu was innovative, exciting and most importantly fun, allowing us to experience new things we had never tasted or experienced before. Bravo!
Amazing experience... but there is a but
Going to this restaurant is an event - and it is truly unique. Such a clever culinary experience. If you have the chance then do go. We did have a grumble however - some of the explanations of the culinary creations by the clearly enthusiastic and knowledgeable staff were so long, that but the time they'd finished, in several cases the hot food was warm at best. We found ourselves watching the food cool for three or four minutes while the staff went into long and sometimes rambling monologues. One dish was pretty stone cold by the time all the intricate details were fully explained. The portions are quite small (for obvious reasons) so they do cool off quickly, and the ambient room temperature isn't overly hot. We thought about complaining, but decided it wouldn't have really helped, and would have spoiled the ambience. However, it has definitely been one of our talking points with all our friends who were excited to hear about it.
Once in a lifetime experience
This was a bucket list essential for me and it did not disappoint. My husband took me for my 50th birthday and the staff were all aware and made me feel like a VIP all evening. The story tellers were passionate and informative. The food was sublime. We went to the wine cellar and had a tour of the kitchen. We ate our sweets the next day so continued the experience at home. Anyone who is considering coming here should 100% do it, you won’t be sorry.
Wife's 60th birthday lunch. on another culinary planet
Not three star without a reason . Went here for my Wife's birthday celebration, the whole vibe was very chilled although obviously there were some seriously wealthy people here. I won't go too much into the food as I wish I hadn't researched so much before we went and this slightly messed the surprise . Suffice to say, every dish in the tasting menu was a complete surprise and delight. As usual in these top Michelin starred places you are able to have some good banter with the front of house (contrary to a lot of peoples expectations) . Very expensive but you need to come here at least once in your lifetime
Simply amazing
Just a wonderful experience and great staff. We had the Xmas Menu, the food was superb, staff chatty, not stuffy as some Michelin starred restaurants are and you smile all the through the experience. Treat yourself, a great box ticked
I've always been intrigued by molecular gastronomy and I
I've always been intrigued by molecular gastronomy and I have been wanting to try more fine dining, so I knew when I visited the UK I needed to try The Fat Duck. From the moment you enter the small airlock before going into the restaurant, you feel swept away to a whimsical place, like a trip into Willy Wonka's chocolate factory. We came for their Sensorium tasting menu which seeks to enthrall all 5 senses, and it surely does. Dining here can change your entire perception of food. My favorite dish is their Sound of the Sea which they claim will transport you to the seaside which I didn't really believe at first, but after trying it I realized it was true. When you close your eyes and wear the headphones and start eating the dish, your brain really feels like you're at the beach, seeing the sunlight hit your eyelid, feeling the foam of the ocean on your lip. Overall, they are masters of their craft here and really know how to create an immersive experience. I could go on-and-on about each course of their menu, but I don't want to spoil too many surprises. I definitely would come back one day once they have a new menu. I really enjoyed the non-alcoholic drink pairing which had a wide variety of unique drinks, so I would probably do that again as well.
I'm speechless.
I don't possess the gifted genius to even comprehend the level of creativity, artistry, food-chemistry, and skill, let alone the sheer grit and guts to even fantasize what becomes behind the nondescript walls of that remodeled old tavern. All I can do is appreciate the once in a lifetime experience. And thanks to the impeccable storyteller waitstaff for caring for our bicycles during our fantasy experience.
