What happened to Kiriko? This used to be a sublime, serene itamae experience and one of this sushi lover's favorite places on the Westside until last night. My wife and I made a reservation for the sushi counter for our anniversary and were so excited to go back and enjoy the omakase. We were greeted rather curtly at the door and essentially pointed to take our seats, walking past a cluttered table right in the middle of the room overflowing with to-go containers and utensils. It was a real mess. We sat at the bar and, while the sushi chef prepared a to-go box, he ignored us for the next 10 minutes as we sat there. The owner, I believe, came over once and asked us for our drink order after essentially flinging our menus down at us. No warm greeting, no ceremony, no acknowledgement. He was busy on the phone taking to-go orders or reservations for most of the time as the restaurant began to fill. The A/C was blasting at our backs and the music was terrible, high-paced techno, which made us both feel anxious. None of the transporting atmosphere or care one expects with high-quality sushi. To boot, the fish in front of us in the case did not look appetizing, a few large and gray ragged hunks amongst the fish. We sat. And sat some more. I did not feel happy but didn't want to spoil our night by speaking up. But after a few more minutes, I could tell my wife and I were not feeling happy or cared for. We agreed this was not a good atmosphere and the hospitality was lacking. Instead of spending $200+ on an omakase, we left and went to another well-known nearby on Santa Monica Blvd., where we really felt happy and cared for, and spent much less than intended on some excellent and unique fish. Don't take your customers for granted, Kiriko, you were great once. I understand you may be having staffing issues, like a lot of restaurants, but you've got to do better than this.
