By far the best! Our favorite chef Shinji has returned to Japan. But his sushi is my personal favorite. Ken San was very friendly and staff were nice. It's such sad news to find out Kiriko is closed. We had been coming to Kiriko over 2 decades. The quality of the fish and the way they were prepared. Not only did the raw but their cook menu was so good. Not to mention, their 茶碗蒸し was out of this planet, super silky made with the best yummy stock, with uni and scallop. Their teriyaki chicken with mash yam, warm mushroom spinach salad, stuffed eggplants..... etc. so much love was put into every single dish.Well, no other places can replace Kiriko! Best of luck to Ken SAN's surgery and speedy recovery!

It saddens me to post this news but just found out Kiriko closed down last night :( They always served high-end quality sushi & authentic Japanese food. Hopefully something similar or comparable will occupy this space in near future. Sayonara, you'll be missed. "Sawtelle's Beloved Kiriko Sushi Closed Last Night, After 23 Years in Business. Chef-owner Ken Namba sold the business, but says a future restaurant could be on the horizon."

Don't be scared off by the reviews saying that the service is poor. It's a small business and it can get crowded, so you may have to wait a little longer for your food, but it's worth it.My girlfriend and I came here for her birthday and both had the Omakase...great quality sushi for a competitive price of $100 each. Definitely try this place out if you're a real sushi head. The toro roll was my favorite
Be the first to ReplyFantastic.
Stupendous. Amazing. Delicious. Be sure to park in the underground parking. And be prepared for a little sticker shock when you get the bill. A1 primo sushi.

Avoid this place - maybe it used to be good - Read amazing reviews of the Omakase - I try them all over Los Angeles so gave it it a try - it was $90 - which is fine but it was like an appetizer - The actual pieces of sushi are about 1/2 the size of a standard Japanese restaurant - the sushi itself was good but if you are hungry your will need to spend but 2 of them for $180 - very disappointed - dinner for 4 is $500 plus without drinks - and we need to go get food afterward - ridiculous !

We are group of 7 so we called to make a reservation but some one said they cant have the table for the big group. So we decided to spilt to 2 tables. We called to confirm the reservation time but someone hung up the phone after knowing we were split to 2 tables, we tried to called again many times and used another phone number also he just hung up the phone again. Bad customer service!!!
Be the first to ReplyWe came in on a Saturday night with a group of 4 people.
We made a reservation beforehand so we got seated right away. Our server took our order rather quickly and our seaweed salads came right out. However, it took them at least 45 minutes to bring out our sushi even though the place was only half full. We had to ask two different servers what was taking so long. The sushi for the most part was very good (blue fin tuna, toro, yellowtail carpaccio) though small portions. However the salmon sushi was notably fishy. And the place doesn't really have much of a vibe. We ended up being the last group to leave, and we weren't even full. At $100 per person including only one beer and one glass of wine I think you have plenty of other/better options for the price.
Be the first to ReplyThe service here is terrible.
The restaurant doesn't even look that great. And it's really loud...But I gave it 5 stars. Am I crazy? No. I just know a good sushi spot when I see one. The omakase here is incredible. And the chef is just too nice. And the fact that the service isn't great and the place is kind of average looking makes it an experience. I'm all about the "sushi experience" and this place has that. After you leave this place, you'll feel like you found some secret that nobody knows about. Much love!

If you are thinking about going to Kiriko, go now before it's too late!Kiriko has been a Sawtelle staple for decades and is what I consider the best bang for your buck on the westside. During Covid, their to-go chirashi bowls and bentos were some of the only things I looked forward to during those dark times when dine-in was off limits. I've since returned for in-person dining and the omakase experience is truly special! Some of my favorites include the hotate (scallop) and kinmedai (golden eye snapper). They also have a smoked salmon with caviar nigiri, which they smoke the salmon in-house. Omakase is now 10 pieces with a hand roll at the end (definitely do the blue crab or negi toro hand roll) at market price, costing ~$90pp in my most recent visit. Be sure to take a look at the seasonal items for any add-ons.Unfortunately, Kiriko has been struggling as of late. One being short staffed so service is on the slower side and Chef Ken has been answering phones and serving himself. Two with lack of business. as evident by a "notice to change ownership" sign outside their restaurant. Their last day hasn't been announced but is likely in the next few weeks. So this is your last chance to experience Chef Ken and Chef Tomo's extraordinary sushi before Kiriko changes hands. Don't regret skipping out if you're looking to try something new and for the returning patrons, get your last hurrahs in before Kiriko is no more.Make sure to make a reservation and specify if you'd like to be seated at the sushi bar.

What happened to Kiriko? This used to be a sublime, serene itamae experience and one of this sushi lover's favorite places on the Westside until last night. My wife and I made a reservation for the sushi counter for our anniversary and were so excited to go back and enjoy the omakase. We were greeted rather curtly at the door and essentially pointed to take our seats, walking past a cluttered table right in the middle of the room overflowing with to-go containers and utensils. It was a real mess. We sat at the bar and, while the sushi chef prepared a to-go box, he ignored us for the next 10 minutes as we sat there. The owner, I believe, came over once and asked us for our drink order after essentially flinging our menus down at us. No warm greeting, no ceremony, no acknowledgement. He was busy on the phone taking to-go orders or reservations for most of the time as the restaurant began to fill. The A/C was blasting at our backs and the music was terrible, high-paced techno, which made us both feel anxious. None of the transporting atmosphere or care one expects with high-quality sushi. To boot, the fish in front of us in the case did not look appetizing, a few large and gray ragged hunks amongst the fish. We sat. And sat some more. I did not feel happy but didn't want to spoil our night by speaking up. But after a few more minutes, I could tell my wife and I were not feeling happy or cared for. We agreed this was not a good atmosphere and the hospitality was lacking. Instead of spending $200+ on an omakase, we left and went to another well-known nearby on Santa Monica Blvd., where we really felt happy and cared for, and spent much less than intended on some excellent and unique fish. Don't take your customers for granted, Kiriko, you were great once. I understand you may be having staffing issues, like a lot of restaurants, but you've got to do better than this.
Be the first to ReplyI have been eyeing this unassuming spot for weeks.
I knew it was going to deliver because every time I passed it, the entire restaurant was full. We were thankfully able to walk in and get seated, but it seemed that making a reservation would be a good move going forward. We ordered the kikusui cold sake, edamame, yellowtail carpaccio, and a whole smattering of rolls. Of note, the California roll is made with real blue crab and was probably the best California roll I've had. I also loved the spicy tuna and spicy scallop roll. The real showstopper was the yellowtail carpaccio though. SO good. I'm eager to go back and try their omikase (priced at $80) for a nice occasion. The only teeny tiny thing I'll mention is that service was a bit slow, but there was only one waiter. So go when you're not in a big rush!
Be the first to ReplyPlace was great.
Don't do anything but omakase. This is my favorite sushi on the westside.Service is a bit slow due to pandemic staffing issues. If you sit at the bar you get food faster (duh).I normally just get the premium omakase, runs like $120 or so.People who complain about this place are not ordering correctly. It's family owned sushi spot. Get the omakase. It's that simple!Olympic collection is getting ripped up right now, you can park there ez.
Be the first to ReplyNOT SAFE!! POOR SERVICE.
We went here several times before COVID and had a positive experience. This didn't seem important to the owner this evening.Tonight we reserved places at the sushi counter as usual. Since COVID- Omicron is spreading at the rate of over 40,000 cases a day in Los Angeles, we expected Kiriko to take extra safety precautions just like places like K-Zo and Matsumoto routinely do. Unfortunately, this is not the case. They do not separate parties at the counter. They wanted to jam us close to strangers at the bar. When we asked to have a one chair separation from the strangers they refused. We protested and they offered places in the corner of the bent bar which was very isolated. The point of sitting at the counter is to feel a part of things, so we refused and left. After leaving, we called them to register a protest about their lack of safety precautions and poor customer service. The owner actually laughed at me for wanting to sit near the sushi chef (places were available). Very insulting.Fortunately we were able to walk a block away and find Tsujita, a wonderful place with top quality fish and service. They do care about health safety and they separate parties at the counter. After finishing an outstanding Omakase experience, we walked by Kiriko and the sushi counter was packed, elbow to elbow. I wonder how many of these folks will be infected with Omicron!Stay away from this place. Your health and customer service are not important to them. There are dozens of top quality sushi restaurants the area that do care about you. You don't need to put up with this place. We will report their crowding to the health department.

This spot doesn't get the notoriety it so deserves -- its modest pricing belies its top-tier standing.I rediscovered this place during the pandemic, and while its takeout business seemed to do well, it's a bummer that it's being judged for takeout. Despite the whole not-cooked thing, sushi does not hold or travel well. Eat in, trust the chef and you'll be in for a fantastic experience.
Be the first to ReplyTop tier sushi in an unassuming location.
I live nearby and am surrounded by many sushi places that all seem to be relatively the same price and I would rank this one the best in the area from all I've tried.
Be the first to ReplyMy 84-year old Japanese-American mother's favorite place.
Whenever she is in town, Kiriko is always her first stop. We love this restaurant. Mom's favorite is sashimi platter. We love kohada, blue fin tuna, blue crab roll and tempura.

A friend & I just did the premium omakase sushi lunch, and it was AMAZING! Not a single bite was even close to being disappointing; and the chef was kind enough to begin the meal by asking us about anything we wished to avoid. In my case: roe and Uni, which are pretty much the only two things I won't touch. Service was spot-on. Do yourself a favor and give this place a try. KEY ADVICE: underground parking is currently free, owing to construction in the complex (NW corner of Olympic @ Sawtelle). And the entrance to the restaurant itself is on Sawtelle, which can be confusing and slightly hidden with all the scaffolding. But don't let that dissuade you. Go!!!

Amazing little spot, with quality fish, great customer service and authentic atmosphere.
Be the first to ReplyI was severely disappointed with the meal I had.
I went to lunch here to celebrate my birthday and I honestly want a redo meal. We ordered the special japanese sashimi. The waiter warned us that the price was due to quality, not quantity. We accepted this but the promise was not delivered. The fish did not taste fresh and was indiferentiable from what you would find at the grocery store. The fish also came with strange strong gelatinous sauces. The people working there seemed more interested in preparing their own lunch. It amounted to to $130. For that price, I could have gotten a far superior meal somewhere else on Sawtelle.

It's very difficult to judge any restaurant based off of a takeout experience. This is especially true for sushi, since everything is very precise. The rice doesn't travel well, the temperature of all the components aren't correct, and the seasoning could be off. That being said, Kiriko still offers a great option for those looking for a premium sushi option. There's no doubt that the nigiris are better than your typical sushi joint. Everything from the tuna(maguro) to the sea urchin(uni) was of high quality. The rice was also good, but a tad on the lighter side when it comes to the seasoning.Kiriko is undoubtedly in the upper tier of sushi restaurants in LA. However, it falls short of some of its competitors churning out better sushi at a comparable price point.
