Sunda Chicago Reviews from The Last Year
First-time customer here, and Sunda came highly
First-time customer here, and Sunda came highly recommended, especially their happy hour menu. The upscale, sexy ambiance is a perfect fit for the River North scene. I was absolutely speechless at how delicious each item on the menu was. I ended up trying several dishes and was thoroughly impressed with each one. I want to gatekeep the pork belly bites, but trust me, you have to add them to your happy hour plans. Even my vegetarian friend's mouth was watering! The only reason my review isn't 5 stars is the service. Despite it not being very busy when I visited (Friday afternoon around 4:30 PM), I sat outside for at least 15 minutes before being acknowledged by a waiter. Neighboring tables were being served, so it was quite odd. Once we were finally served, we encountered at least two different waiters, and there was no consistency. We thought they might be working together, but they clearly were not. It was inconvenient because we wanted to order more dishes, but due to the long wait, we ended up leaving for another happy hour.

Our server Ezra was amazing! He went above and beyond to make sure my friends' birthdays were so much fun! He was so kind, attentive, and fun! Thank you Ezra!!!
I absolutely love the innovative, flavorful dishes Sunda
I absolutely love the innovative, flavorful dishes Sunda consistently offers and serves. My biggest issue is that it's SO loud inside! Our 7pm dinner felt like it was being served in a nightclub with how high the volume was. I realize this is a high energy spot, but having to yell across our dinner table to have a conversation really detracted from our experience. Otherwise, again, the service and food itself is always excellent!
Sunda is a home run, large shareable portions and even
Sunda is a home run, large shareable portions and even bigger flavors. Those with food allergies will find accommodations everywhere for an all around great dinner! We started off with the Papaya Salad and the Shishito Peppers. The peppers were great, had a good tamari flavor to them and perfectly cooked a with just enough heat. The papaya salad was a bit of a letdown. It needed more acid, more salt and a bit more spice. I would skip the papaya salad next time. We also picked up the blackberry limeade and it was delicious as well. For entrees we got the Chap Chae with Chicken and the steam buns. Pro tip even though it doesn't say it on the menu you can mix and match the steam buns and get 2 of any kind, I went with the fried chicken and pork belly, a wise decision. The Chap Chae was outstanding. Full of flavor, perfectly cooked glass noodles, just the right amount of sauce and a sizable portion. The steam buns were excellent, pillowy soft and warm, melt in your mouth. The fried chicken was very crispy and the slaw on top was excellent. The pork belly was wonderfully crispy on the exterior with a great sauce and a perfectly acidic slaw to cut the fat. Getting 2 of each was ideal. They have so many options here, so much to choose from and it all looks delicious. I would highly recommend Sunda.

Located near Illinois and Clark, this trendy restaurant was hosting the Asian American Pacific Month specials. I was looking forward to the long rib and congee special. The congee was flavorful but needed more porridge and bok choy. The beef was as large as a dinosaur bone and very tender. I was disappointed the beef was not flavorful. The vibe of the room was energetic. The staff were not wearing masks. The food prices are a bit high, but the atmosphere makes up for it.
The valet parking was convenient and reasonably priced.
The food is very good, a variety of foods. We tried so many things and all were good to great. The feast was a lot of food and felt like we ordered something in Hawaii.

Food was pretty good but our server Kimberly was absolutely amazing! She was so accommodating, patient, and provided fabulous service. As for food I recommend the oxtail potstickers and the crab hand rolls.
I always make it a point to east at Sunda when I come to
I always make it a point to east at Sunda when I come to Chicago! This place is a fav and never disappoints. We always order the shishito peppers and the crispy brussel sprouts. This time we also had the crazy rice which was wonderful (we added more spice!) and the crispy rice with wagu but didn't love the beef. Service was fabulous!
What an experienxe! We came by for brunch on a Saturday
What an experienxe! We came by for brunch on a Saturday afternoon and were blown away. To start, Sunda now has 2 locations, River North and Fulton Market. For brunch, we went to the River North location. We made reservations prior to arriving, and was able to park in a nearby parking garage during brunch. When you first walk in you're greeted with beautiful decor and a lovely host that will take you to your seat. Once seated we were offered water, and our server quickly Came over and gave us a run through of the menu. We decided to order a variety of things because the entire menu sounded delicious. To start, the ube waffles were absolutely divine. The fresh fruit and the ube drizzle on top made us never want the plate to end. That is until we had the steak and eggs. While the dish itself may sound simple, but there was nothing simple about the unforgettable flavors of the potatoes and the steak. I love bunch, and will say this may be one of my top 5 dishes I've had in such a long time. Currently drooling thinking about it! We also got the Brussel sprout salad which sounds rather basic, but the flavors from sweet to spicy with a nice savory crunch. It really plays with all of the taste buds. Of course we had to try their baos too. We had asked for half pork belly and half kfc (Korean fried chicken) so that we were able to try both. And neither disappointed! If you're looking for that extra crunch in flavor, I highly recommend the fried chicken. If you're looking for one that's rich in flavor, the Adobo pork belly is the move! After hearing about the incredible sumo Bloody Mary, we of course had to see it for ourselves! And boy did it shock us when it came out. The bloody itself could've been a meal all in its own. From the lumpia, to the bao, to the tocino grilled cheese and more. I think we were missing the crab roll on ours, but that's okay because we had tons of other goodies on it try! Our server was excellent in giving us suggestions and explained all of the dishes as they came out so we were able to fully enjoy the flavors of the meal! All in all, we had such a great time! I can't wait to come back and try more. Esp., some of their sushi dishes!
This is a vibrant and moody space.
It's really beautiful. We started with beer/cocktails and the midori. Followed by the sig crispy rice Spicy Tuna and oxtail pot stickers. Pretty sure we also got some nigiri/sashimi and a roll, but I can't remember which. Everything was delicious and service was great. The Sunda sundae kind of stole the show. It was a fantastically fun, different, and delicious dessert. Definitely recommend.
Great brunch!
Ambiance was nice. Server was friendly and knowledgeable about the dishes . Food was flavorful. Love the ube waffles and Japanese chicken. The pork belly buns burst with different textures and taste. Garlic rice was aromatic. Longganiza can be better. Vinegar sauce can use a little more spiciness and fish sauce. Overall, I would come back to try other dishes esp with dinner menu. Wish we had room for dessert.
Private dinning is a must have!
Everything was amazing. The lighting was perfect for the private birthday event I hosted. The setup was very customizable. The server was exceptional and went over and beyond. Only suggestion I made was for the music to be slightly louder during cocktail hour. However, when we asked, they did accommodate right away. I personally enjoyed the food and portions served. Looking forward to the next one. Emily and Nicole were 5 stars by themselves with the communication, speedy reply, and ease of working with. Amazing!!!
Christmas Eve Dinner 2024
This is the second event this year that Nicole Salerno planned for me. The first was a business dinner for me to entertain a group from my largest client. This most recent was a Family Christmas Eve dinner. The managers and staff are all amazing. The star of the show was obviously the food. And, as my two Gen Z nieces said, “The phones eat first!” They took dozens of photos and of course posted them. I do want to say that my wife and I have been ranking our dining experiences around the world for many years. After our Christmas Eve dinner at Sunda, you have definitely made it into the Top 5 of any restaurant experience we have ever had. FYI: Our No. 1 restaurant is Café Drouant in Paris.
Annual Company Christmas Dinner
We had our annual company Christmas dinner at Sunda on December 8th and it was amazing...best one yet! Nicole Salerno organized the entire evening for us including a table at the Underground Cocktail Club. We had a private room that included a bar. We kept the bartender Ezra busy all night slinging drinks for us. Our waiter Sam was outstanding as well and tended to our every need. The food was delicious...from appetizers to main courses and desserts. Nicole helped us choose items for a few dietary restrictions as well. I left my coat at Underground and she tracked it down for me too! I would not mind having our annual dinner at Sunda every year.
Corporate Events
We have used Sunda multiple times for business events, casual dinners and larger cocktail hours. Nicole and the team make planning seamless and of course the food is always consistently delicious!
Average At Best and Disappointing
Average to slightly disappointing. There is a lot of seating so that makes for quite a bit of background noise. Do not plan on having an easy time hearing one another. The Edamame was decent. The steamed buns were average. I ordered the Lemongrass Beef Lollipops and they had a nice flavor. Someone ordered the Escolar "The Great White" and it was extremely disappointing. Two specks of fish the size of a quarter and a tiny potato chip on each (crumbs). We expected more. There are so many other great places to eat in Chicago. This is not one of them.
Amazing food and customer service.
We went here as a family dinner! 10/10 experience- our waitress was so lovely and made sure everything was okay and kept our table tidy. All the people were so kind and the sushi was amazing- some of the best food I’ve ever tried! There are a range of vegan and vegetarian options which are all so good. Staff go above and beyond in tending to our requests. Highly recommend.
