St. Lawrence Restaurant Vancouver Reviews from The Last Year
Disappointing
St. Lawrence made its reputation on serving traditional Quebecois food executed to a very high standard. Now that they've hit the big time it seems like they feel the need to do the kind of 'tasting menu' that too many high end restaurants do, that is, unusual and complicated preparations that are all about the skill of the chef and less about serving the guest a satisfying meal. Halfway through the parade of little plates all I wanted was my own plate with my own dinner. That being said, some of those little plates were very good, some less so. And for those who would like to have a conversation over dinner, this might not be the best place. It's noisy and they insist on playing music which just adds to the din.
Wonโt go back - way too expensive for wine pairing!
I have been meaning to go for 8 months - pleased that they were able to move around my reservation - very appreciated. However! You need to pre-pay for dinner! And the pushed wine pairing - was never! Explained for price and was over 300 dollars just for two people! The worst was when presented and responded to the bill - well of course? ! There were bits that were good regarding food - but the blob of Boursin cheese for amuse bouche and the very gamey ! Lamb and the other deep fried item - were waaayyyy too rich that one couldnโt eat and I have eaten a lot of French and Quebec food. It wasnโt the best French food in Vancouver as Le Crocodile is far superior. One server was lovely but another was way too rude and arrogant. The delivery of the 300 plus bill for wine pairings was so so terrible that my Mom became quite upset and it ruined any experience of the evening. The arrogance of the staff is coming out and the place wonโt last with such an attitude. Go to Le Crocodile for good French food! And you wonโt have to pay outrageous prices for wine pairing.
Ralph Fiennes & JC Poirier have something in common; a dislike for their customers
Have you seen the movie "The Menu"? Well, thatโs St-Lawrence! Pretentious, weird, fixed menu, and owner so stupid he can't say hello or thank you to customers who pay $300 for the chance to eat at his establishment. Special touch to the dresses of the waitresses who come directly from the Village d'Antan in Drummondville. If this is the face of Quebec gastronomy in British Columbia, well I'm going to fly my flag at half-mast!
More than just a meal, a truly unforgettable expierence
Fantastic food, wine pairings and service - overall a great evening in lovely setting. There were several courses, all nicely timed, rich and filling. The flan de foie gras (Duck liver custard), tartare de kanpachi with a Uni sauce and grilled beef were favourites at our table. Would most definitely come back.
French cuisine at its best
Close your eyes and you could be in Paris. In fact itโs a good idea not to look outside as itโs not one of Vancouvers best areas. Never mind, the dining experience is excellent, a mixture of surprises and choices on the menu, backed up by a good choice of cocktails and wines. Tables are close together and the restaurant is compact, but that adds to the atmosphere. Every dish was full of french flavour, expertly prepared and delivered by attentive, knowledgeable staff. Definitely add this to your list when visiting Vancouver and be sure to book early.
Not quite up to par
Expected a bit more from a Michelin stared restaurant , having eaten in many all over the world I was excited and knew what to expect. The food was really good but nothing really stood out as amazing. The service was good but not quite as good as it should have been. For example when you get up to go to the restroom there is no replacing of napkins etc. The glasses they provided for champagne were large burgundy glasses and when I asked if I could have a different glass - flute. They didnโt have any ! One of the waitresses whilst walking past our table accidentally knocked into my shoulder whilst I was sitting - no acknowledgment or apology . It just didnโt quite hit the mark for a Michelin restaurant for me.
