Smoque Steak Chicago Reviews from The Last Year
Visited again.
Loved it! Consistently excellent! We loved visiting with a larger party and trying nearly everything on the menu. My favorite is still the THE HANGER STEAK - 10 oz pan-seared. It's so full of flavor. Just perfect.
My goodness this place is good!!had the steak and frites.
Added a side of carrots and the cocktails were delicious! Ambiance is beautiful- dark and sexy!

Went for brunch with my friend at Smoque Steak and did not disappoint. My friend had the steak and eggs, steak done medium and it was cooked to perfection. I had the lobster biscuit Benedict and we also tried the lemon berry French toast and had peach Bellini. The host and staff were amazing and very attentive. The atmosphere was beautiful. Love the upscale but not pretentious vibe, the food is just amazing, service is excellent. This has become one of our top favorite Chicago restaurants. Really impressed by their nice staff and especially the service which was greatly appreciated. If you love steak, would definitely recommend this place!
This is a tricky one to rate.
The food ranged from good to very good. The steaks were solid, but this is where the big problem is. In a city like Chicago, solid just doesn't cut it. This place isn't even in the discussion of top 10 steak restaurants in the city. Sure, you save a few bucks by eating in Avondale, but not enough to justify choosing this over Bavette's or Boefhaus or El Che or even Gibson's. The sides were better than the steak, though the Caeser was overdressed. Service was good - perfectly friendly and relatively efficient, but nothing out of the ordinary. I like the vibe of the place. High ceilings kept the noise reasonable even though everyone is packed in fairly closely.

But to start, this was our 3 year anniversary dinner so we chose this because we've been eating at the the Smoque BBQ for years and wanted to continue to give business to the name. They made NO attempts at acknowledging our anniversary. Then, we were seated and brought the menus and my husband is a goofy guy, super sweet and big with hand motions, and was saying how excited he was to eat and how hungry we were and my husband mentioned he was celebrated with a puff of weed beforehand to get excited about the meal and then the waiter took our full order (drinks, app, salad, steak/fries) We got the food and weren't in love with the food by any means but we never complain about anything because we also work in customer service so we know it's hard and maybe it was an off night? My husband asks for a second beer and the waiter forgot about it (or so we thought)... the waiter came back around and my husband asked again for that second beer and he got DENIED THE SERVICE BECAUSE THE WAITER WASNT COMFORTABLE SERVING SOMEONE WHO SMOKES LEGAL WEED. ... for the record he had literally a puff (zero exaggeration because he gets anxious if he has too much) of a vape pen before dinner at our house so like not even stoned. Like I said, we're just upbeat goofy people who work in customer service so we try to make things a happy and easy experience for everyone by being nice and easy going. Apparently, to our waiter, that translates to inebriated? WILD. Also, your best customers are likely stoned so wtf? ...the manager also confirmed that he backs up the decision to not serve more alcohol..... YET THEY KNEW BEFORE WE ORDERED THAT HE HAD HAD WEED SO THEY WERE COMFORTABLE TAKING OUR MONEY FIRST? Not at all obvious..... 238 dollars for some hamburger meat, premade grocery store fries and some shit salad. Nice work smoque.

We came here for a birthday dinner and were so pleasantly surprised by it! It is by far one of the best steakhouse experiences we've been to and here's why: - Sous vide: the steaks are done sous vibe which made them truly perfect texturally. It was a bonus for heathens like my husband who like their steaks well done to have a well done steak that was juicy and perfect all the way through - Sides & accompaniments: The potato gratin and brussel sprouts were to die for! Also loved the option of adding a confit egg and other unique sauces to the steak. Would come back just to try out all them. - Price: With the overall increases across the board in restaurants, we felt the prices were exceedingly fair. It truly made the dining experience feel that much more rewarding, because we were able to enjoy dinner and not feel like we were paying an arm and a leg. It's pretty easy to pay $200 before tip at other nice steakhouses just for two steaks and two sides! Overall, great service, great food. We will be back for sure!
This northwest side steak house is very different from the
This northwest side steak house is very different from the downtown places (many of which I love), but in a very good way. I was skeptical of smoked, sous vide, and seared steaks. I was wrong. I dined with a group of 5. Four of us had the filet and I had the ribeye. We all ordered our steaks medium rare (the rarest they serve). All were soooo delicious and perfectly cooked. The smoke flavor was in the background and made for spectacular flavor. The sear was not as hard as other places (to avoid overcooking) but I didn't care. Make sure you sprinkle on the Maldon salt served with your steak. My ribeye was amazing. We took home no leftovers from our table. Everything was so scrumptious. We shared everything and stared with a terrific Caesar salad. Sides were creamed spinach, potato gratin and garlic mashed potatoes. Great cocktails. Earnest service. Honestly, I will become a regular. Thumbs up to Smoque Steaks!
Great steak, chill vibes.
Free parking and amazing value. Neighborhood gem! Be sure to come back for their brunch. Lobster Biscuit is outstanding.
I have had 4 dinners here.
The first two times were great, which is why I returned. The third time was a disaster. The steaks were not sliced as requested and all the food came out cold. Then they brought steaks back after slicing them but the sides came out too late and again, everything was cold. The manager was sincerely apologetic and adjusted our bill, but the evening was ruined. So we tried a fourth time. The food (two $60 steaks) again came out lukewarm but we were too frustrated to deal with the back and forth from the kitchen. I love the neighborhood, the ambience, the management, the entire concept. When Smoque is good, it is very good. But a 50% success rate for a very expensive meal shows that there are ongoing issues with the pacing of the service and getting hot food to the table. Hoping they can get this problem resolved cuz I wish them the best. Barry and his staff are dedicated restauranteurs.

This swanky yet unassuming, large yet cozy temptation is dangerously close.... They already had my loyalty because the same folks behind Smoque BBQ on Pulaski just south of Irving Park opened it. I already was addicted to their ribs etc. Smoque was a godsend during the time of pestilence. They were among the very first to run a streamlined curbside pickup area. What a treat it was to polish those bones every now and then. After a few hiccups and a great deal of anticipation, their new very classy neighborhood destination calls. I stopped in briefly early on, in the name of research, to check out the front-of-house market, which they informed me was about to be transformed into a no-reservation wine bar. What a great idea! A very discerning pal was in town so we went for dinner. Everything was delicious and meticulously presented. We ordered the steak frites and the hangar steak. We began with a sparkling brut from Austria that perfectly cut through the decadently rich bone marrow appetizer. Our shared entrées, medium rare steak frites and hangar steak, were perfectly presented on a refined rectangular cast iron platter, perfectly cooked and sliced. The hangar steak was slightly smokier. So tender We also shared their comforting shishito creamed spinach. Well executed fries. Although I do prefer green chimichurri over red Our second glass was a wonderful Côtes-du-rhone. My amusing pal Fern suggests a better name: Smoque Steaque. Works for me.
Run - don't walk to Smoque Steak!
We were so impressed with Smoque Steak, and let me tell you why. I recently made reservations for a large party. The friendly staff easily accommodated our seating changes, and upon our arrival, the bar and restaurant ambiance was both beautiful and lively - and yet we could still hear each other perfectly (which seems to be a rare find these days). The drinks, food, and sides were prepared to perfection. The management and staff checked on us frequently, and the desserts were to die for. Our dinner party group frequents many restaurants, but Smoque Steak has topped them all. Thank you for such a memorable evening. I'd give Smoque Steak ten stars if I could!
Great service and value for unique steak dinner
Unique preparation allows beef flavor to come through. Fries were the perfect complement and were crispy on the outside and perfect inside. Shrimp were properly cooked and chilled. Excellent service will bring us back soon.
Amazing!
We absolutely loved our experience at Smoque Steak. We have been fans of Smoque BBQ for many years, and were very excited to try the new restaurant. It was amazing. The salad, filet, sides, wine, and dessert were all beyond delicious. The flavors of everything we tried were unique and memorable. We also really enjoyed the relaxed, friendly, and modern atmosphere. We cannot wait to return, and highly recommend to everyone!
Excellent
I don’t give many five star reviews but this place deserves it! I’m not a fan of their BBQ joint and was skeptical about dining here but this restaurant is a winner. Service was excellent and our servers advice helpful. Cocktails were flavorful and strong. A minimal beer selection was offered and it deserves improvement. Our Shareable salads were huge. One could’ve easily have been split with three folks and maybe four. Dressing on our Caesar was sinfully rich and had the right amount of anchovies taste. I’m glad I don’t know how many grams of fat were in that but it was great. I chose the filet, pale pink aka medium and it was excellent. A hint of smoke and an incredibly tender filet. Although I ordered the veal glacé, I’d have been happy with no topping or maybe just a dip into my wife’s chimichurri sauce which came with her skirt steak. I’m a huge fan of MIchael Jordan’s filets and this was as good but in a different, untraditional way. The skirt steaks were also very well received and the sauce had a nice bite to it. The frites were hot, nicely subtly seasoned and delicious. My friend’s ribeye was the smokiest of the bunch. A bit of marbling which he loved and excellent taste even without the red wine reduction. Our vegetable sides were a group of interesting varieties of mushrooms and the carrots. Both tasty and large portions. We were celebrating two birthdays and this was an excellent dinner we all won’t forget. We will return.
The best Steak in Chicago! You must experience this fabulous new restaurant.
A friend posted on Facebook about their wonderful experience at Smoque Steak on 3310 N Elston Ave in Chicago. You mean the owners of the best barbecue in Chicago now have a Steak house? We made reservations and went the same day. It was a fabulous experience. They just opened in the last month and their wait staff and team are already doing an excellent job. Kathy our server was friendly, knowledgeable and attentive. One of the owners, Mike, served our bottle of wine and was very welcoming. My spouse and I started with an Old Fashioned for me and Pozo Do Mar Albarino for her. We shared the Lobster Grits appetizer which was delicious and a generous portion. The way they prepare their steaks before cooking by seasoning, resting and smoking results in an unmatched Steak experience. We both had filets with a side of Bourbon Glazed carrots. They have side sauces and we tried the Blue Cheese butter and the Garlic Demi Glaze. Both a great accompaniment but the steak had so much flavor we didn't need them. We had a bottle of Vina Bujanda Rioja Reserve that was an excellent match to the steak and roasted carrots. Then Bananas Foster Bread Pudding shared. A delight. A little vanilla ice cream on the side would be a great addition to the dish. Espresso as a finish was excellent as well. Tell as many friends as you can to go to Smoke Steak so we have this treasure in Chicago for years to come!
A rare sort of steakhouse
Far from downtown where clubby, luxurious steakhouses abound, is a new place to have a different kind of steak. The owners of legendary Smoque BBQ recently opened Smoque Steak where they embrace a 3-step cooking method: lightly smoke the beef over oak (and salmon and chicken, too), then cook it sous vide; finish with a short visit on the grill or pan-sear for a gently charred crust. The result is an exceedingly tender piece of meat, cooked to the perfect degree of done-ness. What it lacks is the mineral tang of an aged steak, nor does it have the astronomical price tag. One might even say that compared to the usual suspects downtown it’s an affordable steak house (last night, $53 for a 16 oz. prime ribeye!). Besides the main event, there are a few appetizers and a couple salads on offer but not the customary extravagant tower of shellfish or iceberg wedge with bleu cheese. There are sauces but quick and easily prepared ones, not the usual Bearnaise or Bordelaise. There are sides, too which might be described as customary but with a twist, such as creamed spinach with shishito pepper for a little kick. There are a handful of desserts. Wine, beer and cocktails are served. All this is happening in a spacious, bright, airy, high-ceilinged industrial-looking space that seats 100 customers. And there is free parking in lots adjacent to the restaurant. Everything we ate was good. We had a “classic” shrimp cocktail with 5 shrimp served on a bed of ice. They were succulent; the cocktail sauce had freshly grated horseradish added. We split one 16 oz. ribeye with red wine reduction sauce and shared both the creamed spinach and excellent rosemary potato gratin. Dessert was the staff favorite, a butterscotch pot de crème with 2 shortbread cookies alongside. I had a “Paper Plane” cocktail, a delicious Bourbon, aperol, and lemon concoction, a pretty shade of pink served in a champagne coupe. He had a glass of iced tea. We finished everything. Service was friendly, competent and prompt. Managers stopped by our table at least 3 times to check that we were happy and one even cleared our table of empty dishes. The decibel level was conversation friendly. Astonishingly, dinner for 2 came in under $140 with tax but before tip. Though open only 6 weeks, it’s been discovered. On a Thursday night it was full and tables were being turned over as fast as diners vacated them. It’s reservation-only; no walk-ins, no delivery or carry-out.

Whose name will my reservation be under when I arrive at the venue? |
It can be under your name or a name you choose! Some reservation offers already include the AppointmentTrader Transfer Service which will transfer the reservation in to your name. If its not included you can add it on after buying the reservation for a small fee. One thing on that though: As many reservations become available at last minute, taking a reservation in someone else name is quick and great for privacy. Most reservations on AT are listed with a virtual phone number, so all you need to do is present the phone number at the hostess stand and you are good to go!
