Ramen Nagi San Diego Reviews from The Last Year

Here are our 5 Star FAPS: F (Food): A solid choice for ramen! If you like spicy, I would suggest increasing the spice level! I chose the spicier broth and increased the spiciness by one level, but it was not at all spicy. The noodles and broth were delicious. The gyoza description is no joke. It really is the size of your pinky! I think this can be a pass, and I would rather get the karaage chicken. The karaage was crunchy, moist, and sizable! Ambiance (A): Calm and serene! We sat outside and right next to the Koi pond. On a summer day, it wasn't hot at all! Parking (P): Parked in the lot! Lots of parking. First two hours is free. We ended up shopping around afterwards and paid $6 total. Unsure how long we stayed over the two hours. Service (S): Quick and kind! They are efficient! The self-serve water pitcher is awesome and minimizes the need to get the attention of the staff. Overall, if you're always feeling ramen no matter what the time of day, season, or location, check out Ramen Navi if you're in the area!
I'll go on record and call this the best ramen in San Diego.
Their tonkotsu is deep rich and complex with amazing flavor while their options for customization is greatly appreciated. I love being able to cut down on the tare or oil which gives me a lighter bowl and the extra garlic is delicious. Their noodle options are also appreciated and it's nice to mix and match what I feel like. My wife absolutely loved the vegetarian ramen and put it and it's fried cauliflower katsu cutlets above other places that specialize in vegan ramen. The place looks like a little proper ramen shop in the middle of utc and their staff are friendly. Definitely among the best for great soup in San Diego and a must stop.

Randomly walked in here after shopping and I'm so glad I did. The food was so good and it came out really fast!!
By the best ramen in San Diego.
You have a choice between a series of broths. My favorite choice is the squid ink broth with garlic. The taste is unique. In terms of service, this place gets very crowded so I would recommend trying to come a bit earlier in the day. This is located right in the heart of UTC so there are options to do other things afterwards.
Hands down the best ramen in town.
The ambiance is excellent but the best part is the attentiveness and the welcoming attitude of all the employees here. They deserve a raise!!!
This place is in the UTC mall.
It's located on the side where The Winery restaurant and Raised By Wolves. We've attempted to come here since they opened and never made it in because line was always long. This time we came on a Saturday morning right when they opened. There was a line already but it went pretty fast. While in line, they give you the menu so you can make your selections before seated. The place is small and you share tables with strangers. I had the Original King and my mom has the Red King. The broth on both were very good and noodles were cooked perfectly. My Original King, i had requested heavy in the garlic and an order of Tamago, Japanese style egg. It was delish!! This is definitely my new favorite Ramen place.
This is hands down the best vegetarian ramen I've had to
This is hands down the best vegetarian ramen I've had to date. It upended my previous favorite which was the Yasai. Don't get me wrong, Yasai is still awesome, but this veggie broth was AMAZING. I literally already can't wait to come back. The vegetables were fresh and delicious. I got the thick noodles and not only was the texture perfect, they were cooked to perfection and slightly firm. There was a fried potato cake in the soup that may have been cauliflower (I'm unclear), but whatever it was, it was delicious and I love how it soaked up the broth making it a rich a flavorful bite. The service was stellar-they found the perfect table for us with a high chair. Also, one member of our party found their ramen too spicy so they exchanged it for us without issue. The ambiance is cozy and intimate as the space is very small. It was very clean and airy. We were fortunate as there was only a small wait, typically there are long wait times and I can understand why. Ramen Nagi is worth the wait.
I like ramen but I'm not crazy about it.
Or at least I wasn't. This place might have very well changed my mind! I had the Black King (squid ink & garlic), Chef's Style, and it was easily the best ramen I've ever had. It might not look appealing to most people, but if you can get over the fact that it is black, the broth is extremely tasty. For the more conservative palettes, the Original King does not disappoint. The pork slices were perfect and so was the amount of hot sauce added to both. We also got a small side of Chashu Rice and, honestly, it could probably be a meal on its own. One last note, be prepared to wait in line. However, it does go surprisingly fast, because the service is very efficient.
Fantastic food, excellent service.
My family and I came for an early lunch and we were not disappointed! Everything was so flavourful and everyone on staff was so kind and efficient! The atmosphere is lovely and unique and I can definitely see myself coming back on my next visit to San Diego!
I finally tried out this popular ramen shop and was lucky
I finally tried out this popular ramen shop and was lucky enough to avoid the usual line! The menu is limited, which suggests they've perfected their dishes, and the food was served promptly. For appetizers, we started with the gyoza and karaage. The gyoza was tasty but very small--around 2 inches--so not really worth it. The karaage, on the other hand, was excellent: marinated chicken with a crispy crust and juicy inside, served with a side of mayo. For the main course, I ordered the original king broth with normal noodles, light salt, and chashu. The ramen was solid, with the chashu being a highlight--lean and not too fatty. However, the broth was a bit salty for my taste, so I'd recommend opting for less salt. The standout broth was the black king broth, which featured a garlicky squid ink base. It had plenty of fried garlic bits that added great texture and flavor. The squid ink provided an umami flavor with hints of sweetness, balancing the saltiness well. A nice touch was the complimentary black peppered bean sprouts as side toppings.

I never thought Ramen Nagi would make its way down to San Diego. Being from the bay area, this spot was really popular in both Palo Alto and Santa Clara. I only went once because the line was SO long -- about an hour wait? And after that, I never thought I would visit this restaurant again. I was surprised when they opened one at UTC (along with many other ramen spots like Silverlake and Menya? Competition must be hot), however this place is the only one I've seen with a line forming before doors open. It could be because of how little tables they have available here. Service here is fast, because they are trying to turn tables over quickly with how fast the line grows. You fill out your order form ahead of time, and once you get seated, they'll serve you within 10 minutes. I have had and enjoyed both the Original and Spicy king. The ramen here doesn't come with eggs and toppings are pretty minimal, so you have to do add-ons. If I am recalling correctly, they don't serve alcoholic beverages here either. This isn't a restaurant you want to linger in; I'm sure you'll feel the pressure of leaving once you're meal is done. You also walk to the register to pay instead of the servers taking care of your bill. To avoid a long wait, I would suggest getting in line before they open around 4:30-4:45pm and/or come on a weeknight. No reservations or waitlist -- you have to stand in line to secure your place. I could imagine on Fridays and weekends they get pretty busy here. Plan accordingly!
I came here to meet a friend and long story short my friend
I came here to meet a friend and long story short my friend and I tried the food here and it turned out the ramen here is awesome even though the line is long but the restaurant service took initiative to take the order while wait on the line, not to mention also that the vibe in this restaurant is very Japanese ambiance that really threw me back when I was in Japan before and after all this is one of the restaurants I recommend strongly to eat with friends and family with reasonable price too. hope this helps.
Had to come back a second time and the green king was sooo
Had to come back a second time and the green king was sooo delicious! It's a basil/pesto base tonkotsu and it's extremely rich that comes with bacon and cheese! the bacon is extremely crispy but didn't really notice the cheese. I got the pork belly this time instead of the chashu it's a MUST, so much better than the chashu! It's so deliciously fatty and seasoned very well. I got normal salt and oil, heavy garlic, but if you're getting the geeen king I would recommend none/light oil honestly because the pesto already has sooo much oil. It's pretty heavy, so I would opt to get the green king occasionally. But overall such a delicious and rich broth!! Service was great, we came at 4:50 on a friday evening and was seated around 5:10. It was a bit cold at the tables outside and the servers didn't mind turning up the heater!
Very good tasting ramen for a good price.
The line is long, but it moves way faster than it looks. The inside is very small, but they give food to you very soon after you sit down, and you're in and out in no time.

I tried this place with my girl friend recently and it was really good!! There seemed to be always a nice long line because of its good quality but I can say it's worth your time and waits!! We got to have vegetarian noodles and the texture of the noodle was right and the broth was delicious!!! Can't wait to go visit again!! Keep up the good work Cheers
We tried Ramen Nagi for the first time and we arrived early
We tried Ramen Nagi for the first time and we arrived early in case there was a big line. We fortunately arrived 15 minutes before it opened at 5:00 and one of the staff members went over the menu for us. We were seated really quickly and they had community seating. We ordered a Veggie King and a Green King. I really enjoy the broth of the Veggie King, it had good flavor. I also liked the Green King which was a pesto/basil flavor soup. While I did enjoy the ramen, it didn't meet my expectation for it. My family really hyped the ramen and told me it was because I didn't choose the "good" flavors. In my opinion, maybe my choices weren't the "best" but I shouldn't feel bad for choosing something that I thought I would personally enjoy. The Karaage chicken we got was also ok. This place was definitely on the pricier side for but I would definitely come back here to try the other flavors cause I did have a good experience here.
Please don't waste your life and money on this! Food: Salty
Please don't waste your life and money on this! Food: Salty (even with normal salt level). The ramen is an assembly line for precooked ingredients. A fast food interpretation of Japanese Ramen. Service: exceptionally poor service. Requires costumers to order before you have a seat. Can't even bring a couple of coffee and if you do so, they will take it away. Ambiance: the long line is not due to it's popularity but their inefficiency. Extremely long waiting time even though assembling the ramen only takes less than a minute. It's totally a type of hunger marketing. Please vacate the space for other real restaurants. Thanks!

Ramen Nagi is located within UTC mall and there is usually a line to be seated. Someone will review the menu with you as the line progresses, so you'll be able to place your order as soon as you're seated. I ordered the Red King with extra tree mushroom, seaweed, and an egg. The meat was cooked well, but I felt that the broth was bland and I was expecting more for the price when dining at this restaurant.

This marks my third visit to Ramen Nagi, having previously explored their spots in Century City and Arcadia. Unfortunately, this outing left me a bit underwhelmed, making it my least favorite so far. I stuck to my usual order - the Red King with light tare (salt), normal oil, heavy garlic, and chasu pork, spiced up to level 5. The Saturday lunch line seemed daunting from the outside, but kudos to the swift service as we were seated promptly. The free side dish tradition continued, but to my surprise, there was only one option, and the bean sprouts were noticeably saltier than I remembered from other locations. Diving into our ramens, the flavor was undeniably good, but the saltiness caught us off guard. My husband, opting for the Black King with light salt, echoed the sentiment of an unexpected salt overload. While Ramen Nagi undoubtedly crafts a mean bowl of ramen, this deviation in saltiness left us feeling less than satisfied after our meal. Curious if it was just us, I checked with others, and some didn't notice the saltiness issue. Could it be a quality control hiccup? Overall, I'd still recommend Ramen Nagi for their generally excellent ramen, but this particular visit didn't quite live up to the high standards set by their other locations.

3.5ish stars... It didn't blow me away. I may have an unpopular opinion here, but still open to coming back. The hype for this place was everywhere!! Plenty of friends have enjoyed this, there's ALWAYS a long line every single time I walk by no matter the day of the week, and I've seen them numerous times all over social media. While I was expecting the best ramen ever, I was a tad underwhelmed. I stuck with the Original with Chashu pork, egg, cabbage, and thick noodles. The ramen was alright; it just was not memorable and I've had better. I did like the egg and the texture of their thick noodles the best. I'll give them the benefit of the doubt and say maybe I should've ordered the Red or Black King instead of Original - it looks a lot more flavorful than Original. Will review again once I try those. Ordered gyozas and they were so small. I don't think I've had gyozas that small before. I did see the neighboring table order chicken karaage that I do want to come back and try. The process of it all was very smooth. We arrived around 4:50pm and the line was already long but moved pretty quickly after opening. We were seated after 30 minutes of waiting in line, but they have an employee explaining how it works and you can check off what you'd like while you're still waiting, which speeds up the process a little. Service was okay. Although no complaints, service wasn't memorable. I was surprised that the food came out really fast though, felt maybe less than 10 minutes. Restaurant is very small inside but also many tables outside. Not like we had a choice, but I'm glad to sit inside because it was warmer during dinner.
