Phoenix Grill Express restaurant Valley Village Reviews from The Last Year
A Pricy Panorama with a Side of Subpar Cuisine
Nestled in a prime downtown location offering breathtaking views, The Compass ensnares guests with its picturesque setting but unfortunately falls short when it comes to its culinary offerings. The restaurant seems to have hinged its success primarily on the scenic backdrop it provides, seemingly neglecting the quality of the food served. Diners flock to Compass in pursuit of a dining experience that not only pleases the palate but also feasts the eyes. The establishment undeniably delivers on the latter, offering patrons panoramic views that could possibly justify the steep prices. However, as one delves into the menu and tastes what is offered, the initial allure can quickly lose its luster. The dishes served fail to match the grandeur of its surroundings. Despite the extravagant prices one pays 'through the nose,' the quality of the food does not commensurate with the cost. Patrons may find themselves disappointed as they realize that the culinary experience does not mirror the visual spectacle outside their windows. In conclusion, while Compass may be a go-to spot for those seeking a lavish ambiance and stunning views, it falls short in the most crucial aspect of any dining establishment - the food. As the old adage goes, one cannot live on the view alone. Thus, for those seeking a holistic dining experience that marries both ambiance and epicurean delights, The Compass will leave them wanting.
Leave TWO hours for a Meal if You Need to Make a Performance Across the Street and Do NOT Expect Any Bread!
I am still amazed at what happened last night at The Compass. I didn’t mind the $10/person “deposit” for our 4-person reservation. I didn’t mind the lack of knowledge about wine. But when you say specifically that you have a performance you must be out the door for, across the street at Symphony Hall, and you wait over an hour for your entrees, and there are no breads or amuse bouche to keep you from gnawing your wrist, and you have a disabled person and an 87-year-old to hustle along to make the performance on time, it is just an absurd situation. I realize you pay for the fantastic view. But your waitstaff should be topnotch and your kitchen should be zippy-quick. You should not have to gulp down your food to be on time for a concert. Especially when paying for $50-$70 entrees. (And why aren’t the menu prices listed online???) No one should have to pay extra for a starch when there is none on your entree plate, no bread on the table. The calamari was almost all breading. The carpaccio was just OK. My sisters liked their beef filet and scallops. Was any food here worth the aggravation and constant reminders to the waiter that we were cutting it way too close time-wise? NO. Book a rez at your own risk. They do not take responsibility for the lack of service and certainly do not give any reparation on your bill. The waiter was young and sweet and apologetic, but management has some big problems to remedy.
Dinner at the Compass Grill in Phoenix
The service was a little slow, but the food and atmosphere was great, our waitress acted like she was a spread a little thin
New design not so great, but food was excellent
Pre-COVID this was our goto at the end of a trip to Phoenix--good food, great views. The price made it a special meal, not something we did regularly. Recent reviews haven't been great, but we decided to go anyway and had a great meal. It has been totally redesigned and not so crazy about the new. It used to be a tiered restaurant, so everyone had a good view as it revolved. Now it's only one level and you pay a surcharge ($50!) to sit by the window, not something we paid, so our view was not as good as it used to be. The food, however, was excellent. We shared a Burrata salad and it was great, although a little skimpy for sharing. We both had scallops for dinner and they were cooked perfectly--a great caramelization on the outside and soft on the inside. For dessert I had the brownie sundae and it was tasty and beautiful. Portions are not large, but taste is excellent.
You are paying for the view, food and service not worth the price.
The view is beautiful but the food was not anything I would ever pay that much for. You are paying for the view. Great place to have a drink but would not recommend eating there. Service was poor as well. Our daughter was so excited to take us there and she was apologizing for her choice 🙁
Worth it
Hi. The experience was amazing. The staff was great. I used the valet for parking. Figured it was easier. Which it was. The staff at the restaurant stamped my ticket and parking was only $10. Instead of $15 without the stamp. I had the pasta with fish. It was very flavorful and delicious. The spiked lemonade was also good. The view was worth it. You really don’t realize you are rotating until you look up and another scenery is there. I was not disappointed. Some of the reviews I saw had me skeptical it I took a chance and it was very well worth it.
Compass Grille-Going Downhill!!!
So they did a remodel and RE-opened. Since they reopened they now want to charge you $35 for a window seat. What??? They think they are an airline now? We said no thanks we will take a regular table. They then seat us at a window. I said are we paying $35? They said no since it's slow tonight we gave you this table. So you mean if I agreed to pay $35 you would have taken my money? You knew it was slow when you tried to get the $35 out of me. Such a sleazy move. Prices are outrageous enough and now you want to charge more for a seat? The food was good, that was the only decent thing. They use to give you a nice bread basket with different breads and I think corn bread as well. Now, you get nothing. Lastly, the service was ehhh fair. Took longer than I thought it should for a slow night. Also, never came back to refill drinks. I'd say go to City Hall or Steak 44 or other places. It's way over priced and just puts you in a weird space asking to pay $35 more for a window seat. WTF!!!
Great view, but don’t pay the window seat surcharge!
DO NOT pay the $50 fee for a window table! The restaurant is quite small and all seats seem to have a good view. The view was lovely at dinner time with the gradual sunset.
