Remarkable
The perfect evening in my eyes, is some drinks, a beautiful meal and a wonderful show. Georgia Boy is able to provide all of these in a truly magical adventure of food and theatre. The theatre isn’t only provided in the food, which turns and twists your taste buds in every direction and makes you question the look of the dish, compared to the flavour at every corner. It is also provided in the overall dining experience itself. How can you dish up a scallop with a breakfast cereal ? How does a dish looking like candy floss, taste like bacon ? The questions go on and on. How can a dining experience become an adventure ? Without giving too much away, this restaurant provides it. As the curtains are closed in front of you, you descend into a world of Willy Wonka magic. It is simply not possible to detail each dish of our tasting menu of 12 dishes, as it would be unfair for those that dine here to have the excitement taken away from them. Just enter the stage and let the show commence.
Be the first to ReplyWorld class cuisine presented with whimsical genius in a casual, comfortable setting
This young, award-winning restaurant is located two doors adjacent to the historic Plaza theater on Ponce de Leon Avenue. One enters into a long rectangular room that is known as the Southern Belle’, the establishment’s cocktail forward casual restaurant space. Separated by a bar area, ‘Georgia Boy’ is the upscale prix fixe restaurant behind it. Georgia boy is a whimsical invitation to enjoy the chefs imaginative approach to food playing on themes from the author, Roald Dahl, and Georgia folk culture. There are only two rectangular granite tables that seat approximately eight people per table in the same kitchen/dining space as a small team of creative chefs who bring each course right to the table on whimsical and beautiful dishware. My wife enjoyed the non-alcoholic wines and mocktails while I tried the wine pairings. Everything was superb. The 12 course menu is amazing. I have provided a photograph of the list that they provide at the end of the meal. And, I have enjoyed prefix multicourse meals around the world and I would place this among the top three. All of the dishes were exceptional, but the scallop with a cereal-like topping (think of Alpen muesli) and milk was transcendent and impossible to conceive.
Be the first to ReplyOUTSTANDING Service and Food!!!
Our reservation ended being a night in which they had a lot of late diners due to ATL weather and traffic. We waited to be seated for 45 minutes at a dive bar a few doors down. The hostess could tell we were not at all happy. BUT, this is where the story gets great. Once we were finally seated, but the hostess who always kept a smile, our waiter showed up quickly and also with a great attitude. He also apologized and told us our first drinks would be on the house which immediately lightened our mood. He walked us through the menu, and everything we ordered was amazing! The cassoulet was slap yo momma good, as we say in the south! The next huge surprise came at the end when we got the bill. They also removed our 2 appetizers from the bill as a thanks for being patient with them. The companies that truly get it in service realize that issues will arise, but it’s how you recover that can make all the difference. They truly get it at Southern Belle. We’ll be back for sure, and you should go too if in The A!

Loved the charm of the restaurant. The At Dawn or Dusk mocktail was delicious. Risotto was flavorful and filling. Staff was attentive and helpful.
Be the first to ReplyExceptional Meal at Southern Belle
My wife and I had a date night at Southern Belle last night, and it firmly established Southern Belle as one of our new favorite restaurants in Atlanta. The meal was exceptional, start to finish! The plates are designed for sharing (perfect for "date night"), so we split two small and two large items. We had a hard time ranking our favorite courses, as everything was utterly delicious, refined, and inventive! Our first course was a warm brussels salad, with beautifully flavorful crisp brussels melded with delicate blue cheese morsels and delightfully piquant pickled cherries. The next course (lobster paparadelle) was also delicious, but probably our least favorite of the entire lot. The lobster was tender and perfectly cooked, and the kale chips were insanely tasty, but the different elements of this complex dish didn't quite synergize together in the same way that our other courses did. Our next course was probably the highlight of the meal, the Vietnamese style "chicken and waffles." While we were worried that this might be just a gimmicky "concept" dish that wouldn't land, it actually was a perfect reflection of Chef Joey Ward's cuisine: rooted in the Southern vernacular, but with international flair and refinement! The delicate peanut waffles were the perfect accompaniment for the crispy bites of fried chicken thigh, especially when drenched with the incredible nuoc cham maple sauce and the lime butter. We almost wanted to order a second portion of these, because we completely devoured them! Our final main course was the beef short ribs on gouda grits. While not particularly inventive, it was perfectly executed, with a generous portion of fork-tender braised short rib that was perfectly complemented by the grits and delicate mustard greens. Although we were stuffed at this point, we couldn't turn away from desert. I had the Hummingbird cake (an exemplar of Southern spiced cake with nuts and pineapple), and my wife enjoyed a phenomenal chocolate tart. Our cocktails were also terrific (I had a "Big Nick Energy," their seasonal eggnog cocktail with a cinnamon liqueur). Service was excellent (besides a slight delay in getting our bill at the end of the meal). Perhaps the only complaint was the seating, as they offer mainly "highboy" chairs and tables, which are not particularly comfortable. Pricing was very fair (about $200 total for four mains, two desserts and two cocktails). The ambiance was sort of "swank, hip lounge"--tasteful, and not overly formal. We will definitely be back, and we are tempted to try the "Georgia Boy" prixe fixe experience the next time we are celebrating a special occasion!
Be the first to ReplyUnderwhelming and Overpriced
It was woefully underwhelming. The diners with whom we shared the nook and subsequently the table were the best feature of the experience. They giggled along with us at many of the courses. We were waiting on someone to come out and confirm we were being punked. The wine pairing was horrendous. The servers tell disjointed stories about the wine that do not in any way share a theme or connect to the food being served. The service was mediocre overall. Our primary server disregarded previously and repeatedly communicated dietary restrictions and was rather rude after serving an item in violation of religious adherence and never apologized for the egregious error. Instead the server chose to awkwardly avoid us for the remainder of the very long dinner (nearly four hours in duration after starting 20 minutes late). Most of the food was served cold to lukewarm; the worst of which was a "tomato and mayonnaise" crabby patty (in size and I also imagine taste) that lingered on the pallet for 20 minutes after suffering the initial bite. That horrendous dish was served with a real water hose and gulf coast salt water ice chips (described differently - tasting like salt water nonetheless). It had to have been a joke of some kind. As one of the courses, we were served mixed butter and sugar (the genesis of cake batter) dolloped on a mixer beater. The other guests at our table were as amused as we were by the audacity. The second to worst dish award goes to the beet tartare - for the price, I would have liked to have been able to finish it, but it was so disgusting and the taste so putrid, my gag reflex wouldn't allow it. You'd think we were vegetarian, but we are not. Why not serve tuna tartare to the pescatarians? The omnivores were served beef. It was a cheap slight which was the true theme of the evening. Not everything was a miss--the collards were delicious and would have been spectacular if they were hot and not served on an elementary school cafeteria tray with a hodgepodge of other disconnected foods. The best dish was the sorbet - the whole teaspoon full that all guests raved about. It was served atop flowers that our man server confirmed were edible, though they wouldn't recommend eating because they also confirmed these flowers were reused across several meals. There was no stove top or true oven use that we saw in the kitchen, just a convection oven with 4 - 6 chefs standing around waiting 10 -20 minutes between courses to assemble as part of the middle school play theatrics. Don't suffer the same indignation we suffered. Go to another restaurant that serves solidly good food and doesn't rely upon modern mythology and ostentatious flair to gain diners.

I’ve been to Georgia Boy. Tonight we went to Southern Belle for a birthday. It was AMAZING. The tasting menu was not only delicious but very filling!!

Exceptionally delicious food. The tasting menu was outstanding: the Portuguese bread course with aged gouda and brown butter layered with vidalia onions one of best dishes ever. Drinks at $18.75 begin to add up. Recommend they dim the lighting to elevate the space. Cocktails are creative and incredible.
Be the first to ReplyMediocre Food at Exorbitant Prices
This place is definitely not worth trying. The food is mediocre at best, and the prices are ridiculous. We had the four course dinner which without drinks is $107 per person. The main course was a choice of duck breast or steak. When the duck and steaks were delivered, each plate had 2 pieces of the meat we chose. We also had a course which was lobster mac and cheese. It was so full of celery that was all you could taste. Who puts celery in mac and cheese anyway??? Needless to say we will never be back.

This is a review for Georgia Boy. I didn’t know what to expect at this restaurant… I had my own personal expectations due to the price but so does everyone. It may have been a tasting menu, but you leave full and satisfied. We did not purchase the optional wine pairing but someone else did and they said it was amazing. This place is truly an experience and worth saving your money for to enjoy.
Be the first to ReplyAn exceptional culinary experience!
I attended a Chaine des Rotisseurs event there and it was an extraordinary culinary experience! The food was innovative, delicious, exploding in taste, especially the mole dish and blueberry pancake. Every course was an adventure, and the wine pairings were exceptional! The chefs and staff were fantastic and I will be back soon!
Be the first to ReplySouthern Belle - A restaurant still finding it's footing
My family and I went to Southern Belle to celebrate a birthday dinner. We have a two year old toddler and we made sure to check with the restaurant before booking that it was okay to bring her. They said it was fine and the fact that they had a high chair available shows that they are prepared and comfortable with their younger patrons. But unfortunately this is where their preparedness for kids stopped. While their tasting menu is appealing to adults, it is not something that you can expect a child to eat. We asked our waitress if they could prepare something simple for our daughter, maybe some plain vegetables, etc. They said they would check with the chef but came back to say that we could order anything off the a la carte menu for her. Again, this didn't really leave us with many options and we ended up ordering her a salad which she wouldn't try. When we asked if they could adjust some of the items in the salad they weren't able to accommodate that either. Ultimately we did do a restaurant faux pas and ordered her Taco Bell delivery so that she would have something to eat while we were all having our meal. We made sure to check with the hostess before the food arrived and she said it would be fine. When we got her burrito and were giving it to her, the restaurant brought us a plate and asked that we put her food on that which we were happy to do, but then were awkward in asking for the wrapper. Definitely understand where they were coming from, just felt like that situation could have been handled more smoothly and less making us the patrons feel as if we were at fault. We tried numerous times to get her some food at the restaurant itself but with them wanting us to spend $15 - $20 an item on things she would surely not touch, it didn't really feel like they were willing to help very much in making sure she had something to eat. In terms of the tasting menu for the adults, the food was good but maybe coupled with the rest of the experience, was not something that I would go back for. The food is what made my review three stars rather than two, it was good but along with everything else that happened, not worth it for me. Again, I know that we brought a toddler to this restaurant and they may not have had to handle that sort of situation yet, but I would expect if they are welcoming her to the booking that they would be able to accommodate her needs more than what they did.

What a wonderful full sensory experience!! Every dish is so artistically crafted with amazing flavor, texture, and visual pairings. Such an elevated culinary experience. Including the wine pairings completes the experience.
Be the first to ReplyHaute Cuisine
I feel I should start with full disclosure – my son works in the kitchen here but that should not detract from my honest review. We visited in early December. It was our first trip to Atlanta since well before the recent dark times and we gathered with fully vaccinated friends and family (table of six) for the 7-course tasting menu with wine pairing. My daughter, who flew down from NYC for the weekend, has been here several times in the past months and raved. We were blown out of the water. There’s really fine dining, and then there is the next level where fine dining, farm-to-table, and incredible creativity come together, giving us a lasting memory. This is the definition of haute cuisine. Let’s start with Noah, our server. Absolutely spectacular. So much fun, so very knowledgeable about the menu – I can’t remember having a better server. We began with cocktail specials, and they were all excellent. I had the Back to Black fall cocktail and loved it. Then came the amuse bouche – a soft salt peanut milk foam/coffee blend served in a small Starbucks-branded to-go cup, each with the diner’s name in black marker on the cup, cleverly misspelled. So very creative and it just got better. The Egg in a Basket beef tartare dish with the optional caviar was incredibly good. The lobster poached in whey (with local radishes, calamansi and nasturtium) was a table favorite. I was partial to the Berkshire pork loin with salt-roasted sweet potatoes, braised turnips, Asher Blue vinaigrette, dry-aged beef fat, crispy turnip greens (fantastic) and chicharonnes, paired with a Côtes des Francs. Presentation was sublime with each. Highlights included the tuna dish served in glass spheres (the sake paired with it was a treat) and the scallops served under smoke-filled glass domes and all six uncovered at the same time. Elegant at all times. Dessert was a chocolate sesame “brownie” with coffee coconut sorbet, sesame caramel, carrot, persimmon and Ras El Hanout, a Moroccan spice I’d never had before, perfectly paired with a ruby Port. The wine pairings are a must, and we recommend the seven-course dinner – they do have a four. I understand the Georgia Boy chef’s table is now open. We’ll do that next time. The atmosphere in the dining area is cozy and lively but still easy to converse with tablemates. One thing I’ve noticed at the “starred” restaurants I’ve been to is the smoothness of the wait staff and it was the same here. The staff at Southern Belle were always relaxed yet so very precise – the evening just flowed. Just so you know I am not overly biased with my review, Atlanta Magazine just named Southern Belle its Top Restaurant in Atlanta and Chef Joey Ward as Top Chef. Considering the number of great restaurants in Atlanta, that is high praise. Seriously, you won’t find a better spot for a very special evening.
Be the first to ReplyWhat a night of Delicious!!
So it was a culinary adventure, a gastronomic experience and a tastebud explosion. The mixologist was exceptional the nonalcoholic drinks she paired with our 4-course tasting were so creative. The first course with beef tartare surrounded by a Homemade brioche with a white truffle emulsion and egg gel that topped it —-amazing! The second course of seared scallops on a winter squash and green mole—scrumptious!! The third course course, which was the entree, they brought out with the wood-smoked pork loin and 90-day aged sirloin was Extradinaire presentation; though the pork did not taste like it had absorbed any of that flavor. It was kind of bland unfortunately. All in all a great night of flavors with friends. The reconstructed s’mores with the smoked marshmallow ice cream in the center of a tower of meringue and graham cracker was delightful. The service was excellent.

Phenomenal experience from Start to Finish - every bite and sip was amazing! This entire team is so creative - the pre-game cocktails we had were so tasty and then the food with pairings were just perfect! Will be back!!

My son and I had such a great experience at Southern Belle. Great communication by the restaurant beforehand, confirming our reservation and asking about any allergies. Welcoming and friendly staff. This is not a meal, but an experience. Each dish is a piece of art, such great flavors and combinations. Some of the best and most interesting food I've ever had. The staff also did a great job recognizing my son's birthday. I am excited to go back as the menu changes seasonally. Highly recommend!
