Gab's New York Reviews from The Last Year
Fun, tasty brunch food, a friendly staff and a cute little
Fun, tasty brunch food, a friendly staff and a cute little place to enjoy a meal makes this stylish little eatery five stars. We enjoyed their take on French toast and the pork hash with poached eggs was delicious. I don't post many reviews, but this place was a standout.
Tuesday at 7pm I wasn't happy about commuting all the way
Tuesday at 7pm I wasn't happy about commuting all the way downtown to meet a friend for dinner . It made sense why she chose the place as it's across her job . When I first walked the place , my impression was cute , simple and colorful, the menu is new American and the decor was in line with. They have a cute bar situated as soon as you walk in, perfect place to wait. I was greeted by a friendly hostess. Slowly I was no longer regretting my long trip from the uws . I started with a nice glass of Austrian white ( I appreciated the bartenders knowledge). We shared the chicken liver moose and boquerones ( daily special ) which both were a perfect complement to my white wine . As she was trying to be healthy , we had the monkfish with clams, also tasty ! For dessert, we chose the bread pudding , nice and warm and had apples underneath . A scoop of ice cream would have made it even better . I really wanted to try the porkchop for dinner so I guess given the nice experience I had , I'll be back for them ! They have a few tables outdoors , great for people watching . Aa we left around 8:30 , it's when it picked up .
Outrageously Good
You will queue outside for a short while, queue when you get in, all part of a fantastic experience though. Great place, staff are very welcoming and of course the Pastrami sandwich was literally the best sandwich I’ll ever have.
So extremely disappointing.
We waited 45 minutes + to have tasteless pastrami sandwiches on really horrible, cheap bread, and tasteless blintzes with cheap condiments (horrible tasteless cherry compote, and apple sauce and slightly soured cream.) We went out of our way to come here based on the hype and reviews and I think they are just trading on the history of the place. It just wasn't anything special at all, quite the reverse. Full disclosure, our server was lovely and after waiting over an hour we were just too exhausted and hungry to complain. This sub par culinary experience cost over $130 and was a total waste of money. I will never go back and wouldn't recommend Katz's to anyone. There are several other options in NYC and I really, really wish we had gone somewhere else, I just can't overstate how extremely disappointed we all were with the food.
Great pastrami sandwiches, and gelato next door
We had been to Katz’s years ago, it was a hilariously fun “only in New York” experience, so decided to go back. This time, we joined the crush of people lined up at the cutters’ counter to order a sandwich. As crowded as it was, we had no trouble finding a place to sit. They do still have a table service section, though they didn’t say so up front; it used to be along the wall but now it’s only in the far back section near the restrooms. The pastrami is still moist and juicy, and one sandwich can easily be shared by two. They used to have more bread choices, now it’s only (seedless) rye or a roll. The rye was ok, but can’t hold up to the mountain of pastrami and began falling apart. Il Laboratorio gelato is still next door, and makes a perfect spot to finish off your meal with something sweet and refreshing.
Not what I expected
I took the classic pastrami sandwich, the meat was good, but not excellent. The price is too expensive for what it is and the quality.
Craving Satisfied
It’s what the YouTube review says it was. The pastrami is oh so good, tender, juicy, and what a size for a small Asian like me. Truly worth the visit.
Perfect pastrami
If you like pastrami and are in NYC, you need to eat at Katz’s. The deliciousness of the pastrami on rye is well worth any wait you might have (and you will!). We loved the pickles and got a plain knish to try as well. Really tasty and filling - a half sandwich filled me up, so glad we split the sandwich. And hang on to that ticket they give you when you walk in the door! It’s your pass for going in as well as out when you are done!
Unforgettable
The taste experience you take away from this place, highly recommended in all the reviews for the pastrami, is simply unforgettable. We also tried another restaurant that offers it in NYC but it disappointed us.
Pessimo
Da evitare Igiene pessima Cibo pessimo a prezzi folli. Low food low quality, dirty place and they push us to go out just after ordering
I went to have dinner at gabs and I must say it was
I went to have dinner at gabs and I must say it was absolutely delicious! My entire experience was great from entry to exit. I ordered a Van Gogh cocktail and it was delicious. I also had their Scallops which were some of the best I've had! The service was great very friendly and nice. I would definitely come back here and bring people highly recommend
This is a fantastic restaurant really good energy.
Excellent food and solid service The weird item here is that the artwork is possibly the worst in all of NYC. Seriously a great burger but worth the art experience. I'm thinking an 8th grade art class was given brushes and canvas and maybe some moly. Other than that I recommend.
A delicious restaurant tucked away at the end of Carmine
A delicious restaurant tucked away at the end of Carmine Street. We had the sourdough bread, chicken liver mousse, sasso chicken, halibut and pork chop. All of them were delicious, especially the pork chop. We weren't terribly bothered by the price point - it seemed on par with the typical West Village restaurant. Every table had fresh flowers from a local florist, which was a nice touch. Finally, the service was especially nice, which was greatly appreciated.
I went here with one of my group several months ago I'm
I went here with one of my group several months ago I'm pretty sure within a few months after they opened back in late June. I'm unsure if the food portions have changed but the menu does appear to be different now. We shared a lot of dishes and left a bit hungry even though we all spent a good chunk of change with the only dishes that were filling were the spätzle and the strip steak. The rest of them were pretty tiny for the portions but the flavors were decent with my favorites in terms of flavors being the spatzle, the sunchokes, and the croquettes. To drink I went with the Palette Negroni for $18 with gin, green tea infused dry vermouth, and amaro after confirming said amaro as per usual as I like to make sure that it's not aperol or another very sweet amaro. The drink was pretty solid albeit a bit small for $18 but then again it's a cocktail in the West Village so that's partially expected. The service overall was friendly though it did take a very long time for the steak to come out though they were attentive letting us know that it was because it was very busy. I liked the lighting there as well and I can see this place as being good for brunch. As it's raw, the Kampachi Crudo with wasabi, sea beans, and brown butter ponzu for $21 arrived first which was expected. Kampachi is also known as greater amberjack and it is a buttery white fish. The dressing was light and it came with three reasonably sized pieces for $21 which puts some sushi bars to shame in terms of price point. The fish was fresh but i'm not sure if it was worth it. Soon arriving after was the Monkfish Croquettes with ramp aioli and umami powder. These came with two kibbeh sized portions for $12 and they were tasty. The aioli had an herbal flavor which complimented the fish. I would recommend these. There was also Asparagus Tartare for $18 with sunflower seeds, trout roe, and basil. Asparagus tartare is a bit of a weird name for a dish and it arrived similar looking to a tuna tartare find another places with a small circular dish. The asparagus was fresh but there wasn't nearly enough trout roe for the price and outside of it looking nice, this wasn't worth it in the slightest. The first slightly larger dish were the Sunchokes and Fava Beans with herb pistou, chrysanthemum leaf, and pecorino for $18. The sunchokes had a wonderful texture and I presume they were roasted or something else. The dressing had a good flavor from the pistou which is kind of like a nut-less pesto. This was tasty and I would order it again even if there wasn't much pecorino. Next biggest was the Spätzle/Spatzle with snap peas, crab, and sauce soubise for $28. Said sauce he is essentially a sauce consisting of onions cooked and lots of béchamel and it had a good richness which was offset by the greens. The spätzle was cooked nicely and while there wasn't much crab it still be tasted through a good amount of the dish. For $28, I wouldn't mind a little bit more spätzle for the price but it was still tasty. After a while we got the NY Strip with preserved meyer lemon, pomme dauphin, and spring onion for $49. The steak was cooked nicely and the portion size was decent. The meat was tender though cut thin and the pomme dauphin were excellent. Overall it was tasting and pretty much worth it for the price. The flavors here were decent and the service was nice but I'm not sure if it was worth it for the price point. While there was some unique offerings and the stuff was cooked well enough, I don't think the technique justifies the prices outside of it being in the West Village. Mid/low 3.
Eclectic menu with waitstaff noticeably more invested in
Eclectic menu with waitstaff noticeably more invested in diner enjoyment than at peer restaurants. Monkfish croquettes for like $10 were the star of the show. Gnocchi was good but a tiny portion. Japanese eggplant was unique. Chicken entree also enjoyable. Definitely worth approaching it more like a small plates restaurant.
Probably will not come back.
The food and drinks were good, but the service was tolerable. Didn't know that you have to order all food items at once (no additions were allowed later). The waitress kept pressuring our table to order more and I had to politely tell her we would be okay with what we originally had in mind. I didn't feel great throughout the experience because it almost made me feel apologizing for not ordering enough, and a dining experience should never impose this kind of feeling.
We came on a week night and it was pretty slow.
Because of that, the servers were extremely attentive and helpful. They took the time to help us decide which entrees to get. The vibe was great, low music, great decor, comfy couch seats. They also have a small bar area that you can sit at, great for a first date if you can get a reservation. The drinks were great! Perfectly balanced - and they do not skimp on the liquor. For food, we started off with the homemade sourdough to share. It was fresh and chewy. I wish I can eat their bread all day. My husband and I ordered the chicken and the burger to share. I always love a good burger, although simple, it was cooked and seasoned very well. The fries that came with it was crunchy and fresh. Our server highly recommended the chicken and it was amazing! Cooked to the right temperature and paired very well with the mustard jus. The menu is limited and quite pricey for the portions. I'm hoping they can add seasonal items so I can come back and try more!
We liked it so much we're going back tomorrow night.
Service was warm and friendly. Food was exceptional. I'd highly recommend the pork and scallops. Ambiance is fun and festive.
