Fixe Southern House Austin Reviews from The Last Year

So upsetting to say this was one of the worst salads we have ever had. $100 for just 2 of us and so disappointed. There were 6 people and we all said the food was terrible. Very upsetting to spend that much money.

We stopped by Fixe for a date night in the middle of the week. We came a little late to our reservation but the restaurant was kind and accommodating. The interior is classy and fun with a twinge of that southern charm. We tried a wide array of food and the biscuits were the start of the show. They're served with jam, honey, and unsalted butter. The outside of the biscuit had a nice salty flavor that balanced the dense, warm, soft interior. I will say to be careful because it's super easy to fill up in the biscuits alone. The chicken had a crunchy nice skin with a pleasant honey flavor but it the flavor was really isolated to the crunchy skin. The kale had a good serving of dressing to brighten up the flavors. I typically don't order BBQ beans so this was fun to try. It was a large serving with many pieces of meat and small beans. It did have a strong bbq sweet sauce flavor. Unlike the BBQ beans, the brussels didn't have enough bacon. They were sweet at first with the dressing but bitter at the end. We would have liked to see them dressed up a bit more with bacon and maybe something crunchy as well. The deviled eggs were also a great start to the meal! The trout roe on top added the perfect burst of flavor. The cheesecake was not sweet and pretty disappointing, the pecan pie as well. For a southern restaurant I had high hopes for the dessert. Overall all the menu and dishes had a lot of potential but most of the meal fell flat to our expectations. We needed more tactful seasoning, garnishing choices.

Elegant, cozy place for modern southern food.
I sat at the bar and had dinner. The bartender provided great service and recommendations. The passion Paloma cocktail was refreshing and the biscuits made to order are a must
The food, especially the fresh biscuits, is superb.
We received outstanding, friendly service from our waiter.
The fish was cooked to perfection.
The service was excellent and prompt. I would definitely recommend it!

Southern hospitality with a downtown flare, where the service is on point! Our brunch options are not only delightful but also offer a tantalizing array of flavors and textures that will leave you craving more. We started with the famous biscuits, served with whipped butter, honey, fruit preserves, Pimento cheese with Focaccia, and Deviled eggs. This was a perfect combination to entice the taste buds for the main course! The main course, I ordered the fried chicken sandwich: As the fried chicken sandwich with kale coleslaw, chicken butter, and decadent fries was being served, I was transported to a realm of culinary bliss. The combination of kale coleslaw, pickles, and chicken mayo created a symphony of flavors that danced on my palate with each bite. It was a heavenly experience! What better way to celebrate a birthday than with chocolate pretzel cake and salted ice cream to make all your wishes come true? Brilliant Dining!
This place was amazing! 10/10, highly recommended, already
This place was amazing! 10/10, highly recommended, already want to go back!!! Our waiter was nice nice and super knowledgeable about the food, love ! The drinks (Paloma's) very smooth. Biscuits were so fluffy and warm, the honey was my favorite followed by the jam and then the whipped butter. Best biscuits I've ever had :) the shrimp and grits, OMG wanted more. The halibut was so good, the sauce that surrounded it added so much flavor. The brussel sprouts had a bit of a spicy kick, so if you like a sweet and spicy type flavor this was so good! Topped it off with a cobbler, literally can't go wrong with it, I did wish it had a more solid texture type of ice cream, but this one seemed like it was probably like a whipped style type of ice cream, either way it was delicious. My boyfriend really chose a beautiful intimate place for date night! Low light setting, not too cold inside, view of the kitchen... DEFINITELY RECOMMEND!
We had enjoyed the Pecan Street festival along Sixth Street
We had enjoyed the Pecan Street festival along Sixth Street a few times that weekend but now we wanted to say goodbye to Austin with a quiet dinner away from the bustle of the music and dive bars. Fixe is a large dark restaurant with some interesting design choices that made us feel like we were sitting on the inside version of an outside patio or a chicken coop. We hadn't eaten since breakfast and we were ravenous. We ordered four of the six appetizers on the menu: biscuits, cheese dip with Saltines, pimento cheese dip with focaccia, deviled eggs. Then we went ahead and ordered the fried chicken entree + sides of cauliflower, pinto beans, and fries. We were only 3 people. One comment I have about the menu is that there's a lot of fish, so if one of your party doesn't like fish, that's going to be a problem. We attacked the appetizers like sharks in a feeding frenzy. The heaviness of the cheese and bread eventually got to us and we went from 60 to zero. The waiter, sensing that our eyes were bigger than our stomachs, hadn't put our entree and sides order in yet and offered the cancel them. We kept the fried chicken for the protein and canceled the sides The fried chicken was 3 thighs and a WONDERFUL kale salad with a delicious, tart dressing. No dessert for us. So I would recommend Fixe if you're looking for a nice meal in Austin, but I will say that if you're looking for a quintessential Austin meal you'd do better finding a taqueria in East Austin.
Definitely worth it for weekend brunch! We got the salad
Definitely worth it for weekend brunch! We got the salad with salmon and a hamburger but the cinnamon rolls which are made in house were the highlight. Jacob our server was such a good dude and was very accommodating with dietary restrictions. Love the southern vibe as well. The open kitchen is a nice touch
Biscuits to die for and the best southern iced tea ever!
As visitors from outside the US we were invited by friends living in Austin, to Fixe, to experience great southern food and hospitality. I have to say that Fixe really hit the spot for me on a couple of notes - although it missed on a couple of others. First and foremost, I just love love love iced tea, and what I was served here (picture attached) was undoubtedly, unequivocally, the best in class. On another note, I'm a real sucker for southern biscuits - and again, what was served here was just so so good. A real surprise was the deviled eggs. I thought this dish went out in the 70s, but these were excellent. Perhaps I was just maxxed out after this but the fried chicken and fried fish were a bit of a let down. They were so fried that there was just no taste left. Anyway, honestly, I could not begrudge Fixe anything as I enjoyed the biscuits and iced tea so much. And the service was par excellence!
Great place in Austin to go for dinner!
Great atmosphere, vibe, food, service. The biscuits are a great starter. The chicken was insane. Fried but boneless chicken breast. My wife had the pork chop and it was perfectly cooked. Jacob our waiter was great. Took time to recommend food and places to go in the area.
Amazing food, service and history.
The Fixe was delicious, the atmosphere was incredibly welcoming, and the service was impeccable. You are welcome amazing information about the history of the restaurant, and any question we asked in relation to the menu was answered in a mouthwatering way. Highly recommend the fried chicken, the pork chops, definitely the biscuits.deviled eggs were just OK but otherwise everything was perfect
Mostly positive
Pleasant atmosphere and setting. Food and drinks were good, although a little pricey. Note this is the kind of restaurant were you have to order sides with your mains, and hence guess which ones might work together. Would be nice if the chef took responsibility for that. Appetizer was small and dessert was huge.
A Great Experience!
Once again we had an amazing dinner due to the chef and our waitress, Jess, who is always very attentive! From start to finish we didn’t want the evening to end and will for sure return soon!
