Crawford and Son Raleigh Reviews from The Last Year
Expensive, good service, excellent food, noisy.
A very nice dining experience.i would have been happy to pay less, but this is an upscale restaurant. Very good service.

We live in the neighborhood, read many reviews and had high expectations. It was our 25th wedding anniversary and finally got around to making reservations to give it a go. Service was fine, atmosphere is inviting but the food was disappointing to say the least. We tried the biscuits and they are very dry and hard. For the main, I had the swordfish and my wife had the steak. The fish was just ok but the steak tasted like lighter fluid. We should of saved our $200 and gone next door to Pizza Box to get a quality meal.
An amazing experience.
Great wait service too. From the stout hand-made Old Fashioned, to the delicious biscuits, to the tasty trout plate, this place has it all.
First visit won't be the last!
We sat at the bar for dinner and met Tolsen, the bartender. He took great care of us as well as helped point out the best choices for food. The broccoli soup was delicious as well as the crudo. We had the short ribs and duck breast for entrees. Both were outstanding. The only thing wrong was a group of eight men sitting at the front of the room being overly loud. Otherwise it was a great visit. Highly recommended!

After visiting Crawford & Son just two times, it builds an amazing case for one of the best restaurants in Raleigh, hands down. On our last visit, we started with manchego biscuits and the beef tartare (both incredible). The beef tartare was incredibly tasty and so unique, we were not expecting the crispy rice crunch to already be incorporated in the dish. I ordered short rib and it exceeded all my expectations - perfectly tender and delicious. We also loved the pavlova and videri brownie sundae for dessert - the brûléed banana was a nice touch. Excellent service and a little noisy but absolutely worth it!

Dining at Crawford and Son for dinner last week was a great experience that once again exceeded expectations. The outstanding service complemented the food, with the duck breast standing out as possibly among the best in the area. An appetizer special featuring seafood in pastry cups was phenomenal, though the prawn dish fell slightly short. The overall experience was among the best we've had recently. The ambiance is lovely and lively, contributing to a fantastic evening. While the recent James Beard Best Hospitality Award piqued my curiosity, considering the fierce competition in Raleigh, it's undeniable that Crawford and Son is a top contender in the scene. A pro tip for potential visitors: parking in this residential area can be tricky, so plan ahead to avoid any inconveniences. Overall, Crawford and Son provided an unforgettable dining experience that is well worth navigating the parking challenges.

We went here for a fun birthday dinner! For appetizers, we ordered the yellowfin tuna crudo and beef tartare. We particularly enjoyed the beef tartare the most because of the texture that the crispy black rice provided to the overall profile of the dish. As for the tuna crudo, we liked how they added yuzu ice to the dish, which added a unique element to the taste. For the entrees, we ordered the duck breast and beef short rib. The duck breast was cooked perfectly, both tender and juicy. The skin of the duck breast was also a perfect crisp. The dish was accompanied by bok choy and mushrooms which gave it a nice balance to the dish. The short rib was tender and had a good smokey flavor. The caramelized onions and the sour cream and chive potato were a great touch. The restaurant has a cool and sexy intimate setting. The restaurant can get pretty noisy, but it makes it feel lively. The service was very good and the staff were very attentive. While we were there someone left their phone in the bathroom and the staff went from table to table to find the owner. We would definitely go back here again!
Neighborhood spot worth the trip
Our son is a food writer and so we always get good recommendations from him. This is a casual place with a very friendly vibe, fantastic food and a mainstay on the Raleigh food scene. The endive salad is very tasty and a nice small plate to begin a meal. It's even better with the manchego-herb biscuits. I might not have noticed the biscuits on the menu because they are listed with the sides but I saw them on the neighboring table and I don't miss biscuits when I'm visiting Raleigh. We both had the trout which was delicious and a perfect combination of flavors. We had the parsnip cake for dessert - which was described as being like a carrot cake, and it was. And I liked this cake as much as I usually like carrot cake. The menu is limited, but everything we tasted was superb.
Food was awesome and service was exceptional! A new favorite restaurant for us!
For my sister-in-laws birthday she requested Crawford and Son and am I glad she did. Carrie was our server and she was wonderful, expedient, and accommodating. We ordered three of the little gem salads to split among the five of us as well as two orders of their famous biscuits. The salads were delicious and the large portions were more than enough for us to share. The biscuits were amazing and throughly enjoyed. Three people in our party had the trout, one had the short ribs and one had the sweet potato galette. All of the entrees were excellent and enjoyed totally. For dessert we ordered one of each of the three desserts offered. The brownie sundae with tahini ice cream was our favorite and so delicious; the parsnip spice cake was interesting with the ginger ice cream but not as good as the brownie; the Pavlova was our least favorite of the three due to the tartness of the lime curd in opposition to the extra sweetness of the meringue. Again, we totally enjoyed our evening and dinner. Carrie is a treasure and contributed greatly to the experience.
We had the most wonderful dinning experience ever.
Having been told at three places that there would be a three hour wait. We about to up when, KAT came out on the street to let us know she had made room for us. We had a selection of appetizers and several entrees, each of which were delicious and had our group raving about the food. I can't say enough good things about our waiter, SYDNEY. She had a command on everything on the menu, answering questions about ingredients , portion size and everything we asked. She made the whole night do much more enjoyable for us. I'd say she was the best I've seen anywhere. So I can truthfully say, top marks on Ambiance, above top marks for service, and 5+++ for deliciousness and quality of food! Hurrah, hurrah, hurrah!!

Disappointing Meal and Below Average Service.
Previously I was disappointed to hear Crawford & Son decided not to open the location at Fenton, now I am not sad at all. We ate at Crawford and Son last night - dinner for four, the service and experience were not what one would expect from a restaurant in this price point. from the start, the bar service is seriously lacking. They were out of several top shelf liquors, when asked to make a side car they served a drink that was mostly pineapple juice (which is not a sidecar mixer). The butter old fashioned was nicely done and on the menu - don't venture off the menu - they do not have the bar staff to handle it. We did have a nice bottle of Barolo (just about $200) that was fantastic but when it was completed by the four of us when entrees were only about halfway consumed, we were never asked if we would like another bottle or actually ANY other type of drink at all. Our waitress did not offer her name - we had to ask for it. The Short ribs were so fennel forward that my husband gave me his and switched for my duck - the menu did not suggest that it was a fennel dish with short ribs but that is certainly how it tasted (I like fennel, a lot, but it was still way too much). Star dish of the evening was the little gem salad, followed by the duck sausage pastry, everything else was just okay - both the gentlemen ordered the short ribs and both chose not to finish their meals. When the staff came to clear the table the nice young man bobbled the dished and two knives went flying under the feet of the diners next to us...they were never picked up. Nor were the diners offered an apology for almost having a toe cut off. The server threw down one sheet of a dessert list, walked away and then came back and asked what are we having for dessert. Still apparently did not realize that no one had drinks. We elected not to get a dessert and asked for our checks. One couple had requested to pay for the bottle of wine and the other couple was doing the rest of the dinner. Check came back and one couple just had the food on their bill the other had the wine and all of the pre-dinner drinks - we did not make a fuss and paid them as presented but seriously another mistake that a restaurant at this level should not make. Then as we were leaving the server for the table next to us was telling their table about a wonderful caviar special dessert offering...we were never even told about it and would have ordered it. A disappointing birthday meal and revenue loss for Crawford and Son - if wait staff had been on the ball we would have ordered another $200 bottle of wine and the caviar - instead we left dis-satisfied.

Hands down, one of my top 3 best meals of my life!!! The ambiance, friendliness of staff, & most importantly the food ALL OF IT was so amazing. We had appetizers, entrees, sides, wine, desserts & left with full hearts & bellie

Fantastic food and great service! Our table wasn't ready at the time of our reservation but they gave us some seats at the bar while we waited (only ten or so minutes). The bartender was super friendly and helped us pick a bottle of wine while we waited. The food was all incredible - both taste wise and in presentation aesthetics. Will definitely come back again!

This place is the Dabney of Raleigh, and if you're from DC and visiting, give Crawford a try and see for yourself! In any major city, it would be right on the verge of its first Michelin Star. + Arguably the best duck I've had anywhere outside Eleven Madison. It was just an appetizer, but the tortellini, the mushrooms, and the broth could not have been more perfect. By the time I tasted the duck leg itself - perfect - I didn't even care. The rest had already blown me away. + Awesome service and a laid back vibe, with a thoughtful wine list and excellent cocktails. They're working really hard but not sweating, and that's hard to do. When I dropped my napkin, the hostess replaced it with a clean one in 30 seconds. - I often try the "off the beaten path" entree, and the Lion's Mane schnitzel needs work. If the goal were to completely overpower the delicate "seafoodiness" of the shroom, mission accomplished! The combo of thick breading and lemon cream makes the poor lion completely irrelevant. But but but... one-star spots often have a few "misses" - it's the cost of taking chances. I'll be back. This was the best meal I've had in Raleigh, and I've been eating here a decade.
