Cooper's Old Time Pit Bar-B-Que Austin Reviews from The Last Year

I have to hand it to Coopers they know how to handle a crowd and keep moving. We came on a busy Saturday night and sat at the bar. The restaurant had a sports bar feel the seating is awkward kind of beer pub style. Everyone is really friendly giving you instructions on how to order and where to go etc. My husband stood in line at the bartenders suggestion. Apparently the line for food gets crazy and long. We waiting 10 minutes to order deciding on 1/2 # brisket with 2 sides Mac cheese and corn on the cob. The brisket was INCREDIBLE! Best I have ever had it was perfectly seasoned, moist and sooooo melt in your mouth tender. The sides were okay. I was disappointed in the Mac and cheese. For a restaurant that has been in business as long as it had I thought their Mac and cheese would be on point. Not so it as runny, and made with some fake cheese! The corn on the cob was okay just okay but how hard can corn on the cob be? The brisket made it worth our while it was the shining star.
The FAALL OF A LOCAL ICON Coopers BBQ has a problem.
Here is the letter I wrote them: I am writing to let you know that you have a problem. On Thursday, June 20, 2024, My wife picked up a pan of food. She purchased beef ribs ($51.02), brisket ($29.96), sausage ($17.18). potato salad, and several ears of corn. She picked it up and brought it home. I was ready to enjoy it when I got off work. Coopers has been our top BBQ restaurant for some time. We have always viewed eating there as a treat. The quality of your food, however, has a hit an all time low. Every bit of that brisket was fat. I am talking handfuls of nothing but fat. I moved to the ribs. I took a bite. It was flavorful, but like the brisket, it was 100% fat. I went to the kitchen and spit it into the trash can. I managed to fish around on the rib and found one bite of meat nestled in the hunk of fat. I decided to move onto the sausage. No fat there, but it was the worst tasting sausage I have had ever tasted from anywhere. The HEB grocery store has better tasting sausage. Heck, Buc-ees probably has better tasting sausage too. They may be my next go-to place to buy BBQ.. All of the food we purchased ended up in the trash can. I told my wife to never bring that s#!T home again. I was so mad, I told everyone about it at my workplace, today. We like sitting around talking BBQ. Some of my friends at work have been born and raised here. Some claimed to know you. I called friends from out of town, that have always eaten at Coopers, and let them know that they may want to think twice about eating there the next time they visit the area. The food now sucks. I do not need you to call me. I do not need to hear any lame "we'll do better" speeches. I don't even need a refund, because I am not coming back. I have been down that road with Rudy's and each time I went back to use their cheesy gift card, it was the same thing over and over again. Horrible Food. They were the first BBQ place I crossed off my list. Coopers is now the second. I may never know if you get your act together or not. However., If I see an out-of-business sign on your door, I'll know you either didn't care or didn't listen. Good luck to you,
Would consider Coopers a mass production BBQ joint.
Large seating area, short wait at 2 pm. Brisket was somewhat dry but still good. Sausage was chewy and below average. Bacon jalepeno Mac -n-cheese was excellent. Beans were included with all orders, which is a nice touch. However, they were average in flavor. BBQ sauce was vinegar based and different than most Texas bbq joints I have visited. I liked the sauce. Overall, I consider Coopers average compared to other Texas BBQ joints

This place was awesome! Some of the best meat and vibes are super high! The bartenders were awesome and all around a great experience!
Love this spot.
One of my favourites in Austin. Excellent smoked meat. Great experience all around. Great bar selection. Picnic table seating indoor and outdoor. Love it.
Cooper's is a great place to go for some downtown fast
Cooper's is a great place to go for some downtown fast barbecue. The brisket is good and I liked the sausage as well. We particularly liked the blackberry cobbler as well. It's nice they have beans, pickles, and bread available for free as well. Service was fast and it was not that busy. The mac and cheese was meh.
It's one of the best barbecue I have had in a long time.
We ordered brisket, chicken, sausage and rib eye. The briskets are super moist, and it's by far the best bbq chicken I have had in Austin. The skin of the sausage was a little too tough for my taste though. The great thing I loved about it is they had complementary beans stations. The service was good, staff was super friendly and there was not much of a line. Loved the location. It's right on Congress Avenue, so street parking is tricky, we found one though, there are lots of paid public parking within one block.

Holy salt Batman! While the food was satisfying, it was insanely salty! I couldn't taste anything but seasoning and salt. Service was wonderful and there was plentiful seating.
Good bbq
Very good bbq, must when in Austin, good brisket and sausage, they had run out of ribs so can’t comment. Not cheap though.

too salty, not a good choice for BBQ who want to taste real local BBQ. this place is not better than Bay area BBQ house, not at the level of local Texas BBQ food

Great brisket! That's all I had, and it was more than enough. I got a fattier cut. I did end up getting more than I asked for (asked for a half pound and got a full pound) so it was pricier than I expected because I didn't notice until after I paid, but the leftovers reheated well in the air fryer, which is not typical for barbecue! I'm not sure I'd put this at the top of Austin brisket spots, but it's not bad and could be worth a try for the brisket at least.
Best BBQ Turkey in Austin
Best BBQ turkey in Austin. I love turkey and have tried it at most (if not all) the BBQ places in town. This is hands down my favorite. The pork chops and pork ribs are also to die for. We occasionally order their beef rib or brisket and have also enjoyed them. The sides are all delicious; we especially like the grilled corn. They also provide you with free beans and bread. Anytime we have family come in from out of town, we bring them here. The only bad thing about coming out here is the parking. Finding street parking is challenging. Fortunately, there’s a little paid parking lot caddy corner from them. I can’t remember the cost, but I think it was $5-8/hour.
Cooper’s Old Time Pit Bar-b-Que, Austin in February
Entered a few minutes after opening on a Friday and there were just a few people already in there. Service was no nonsense style, but not miserable. Food was excellent, would return if back in Austin
Authentic and great food
If you want a taste of Texan BBQ in a traditional environment you will not be disappointed. As we didn't have a clue what we were doing, the staff were very helpful. We had Rib, Sirloin, Brisket, Jacket Potato, Coleslaw, Ranch Sauces and it was cooked to perfection, the meat just melted in your mouth. Also this was the best Jacket Potato we have ever eaten. There was so much choice and it would be easy for your eyes to be bigger than your belly, however that is ok as you can have a doggie bag. Very authentic feel and the staff great, the bar area is popular and there is plenty of seating. It was that good we went again and the food was brilliant, this time we had sirloin with jalapeno and cheddar sausage, with jacket potato, great quality taste exceptional
Best customer service and price-quality BBQ
I went with my husband the first day we arrived in Austin. We had dinner in Cooper’s, it was our first bbq experience and they were very friendly and patient explaining us how it worked. The rest of the days we visited other popular bbqs in different cities but when we returned to Austin our last day we wanted to finish the trip again in Cooper’s because of all the bbqs we tried, they offered the best price-quality and most importantly they did not treat you as a walking dollar bill but as a customer. By the end of our trip we didn't have much money left and the owner overheard us and gave us a t-shirt and sticker to take with us as souvenir. We were so grateful. All in all, great food, beautiful place and amazing customer service. I totally recommend it over other popular bbqs.
HORRIBLE and WAY OVERPRICED.
Coopers is TERRIBLE...! Super high pricing and devious the way they charge you...! Service was abysmal and out of a regular beer that we ordered. Food was also not very good and certainly NOT worth the money...at ALL...! We highly suggest Pinkerton's in San Antonio. Better in every way.
Good!
I asked several locals to tee up some Austin bbq spots and this one came up. Pics online looked good, so we decided to try it. We got several things and just pigged out. Beef ribs, pork ribs, sausage, a smoked ribeye and of course, brisket. It was all good! The beef ribs and the brisket won for best overall. I will say there is a very ‘salt-forward’ flavor to the meat. It was a tad too much for me, but it was still really good! We also had sides: jalapeño/bacon Mac and cheese, coleslaw and cornbread. The Mac and cheese for the win! Very cheesy and delicious. Overall, this is a quality bbq spot worthy of a return!
Don't bother
I won't go again. We had some brisket and a beef rib. The rib was mostly the bone and they weigh it and you pay by the pound which was 2/3 bone weight. It was tough and pretty crusty/burnt. The brisket was probably 1/3 fat and stringy. The potato salad was okay and the peach cobbler was good. The cobbler was clearly the highlight.
Good Location
Can’t beat the barbecue at this location for a large group. You order at the counter and go from there, quite the setup. Location is quite large and the food was very good.
