Afternoon Tea at The Ritz London Reviews from The Last Year
Outstanding
I would highly recommend going for Afternoon Tea at the Ritz! My Wife, son and I went there for the first time ever, and found it to be a fantastic experience. The staff treat you like a VIP. ❤️
Special birthday treat
Went here to celebrate a special birthday. Everything was absolutely perfect. From the moment we walked in every staff member was welcoming and attentive. Decor was beautiful. We didn’t feel rushed at all. The birthday cake was a lovely special touch and was really nice (not the usual dense sponge with thick icing you get elsewhere). The teas were lovely- I really liked my Darjeeling tea and my husband was very happy with his oolong tea. Would highly recommend, especially for a special occasion.
Concerned.
We have booked afternoon tea at the Ritz as a gift for both my husband and niece and have been looking forward to it for quite a while now. However, on reading the reviews I feel slightly disappointed already. How can such an iconic hotel get so many negative reviews. Scones!!! I would have expected them to be the most perfect ones ever tasted. I'm hoping we haven't wasted our money.
Formal high tea with excellent food, tea and service!
An excellent high tea! Formal with excellent food, tea and service. A fun experience for the entire family. Would highly recommend.
Don’t waste your money!
I’ll begin with the positive: staff were very nice & friendly. Thats where the positives end! Sandwiches were beyond mediocre, the ingredients were clearly basic and it wouldn’t surprise me if they were purchased from any supermarket from their own brand range! Think….opening a pack of cheddar cheese slices and whacking it into a sandwich with some pickle from a jar….of course cutting off the crust to make it look ‘high-end’. It didn’t get any better with the deserts….the scones seemed to be purchased in bulk and heated in a microwave as they went hard after a while. The Palm court (where the afternoon tea takes place) is congested and tightly packed….it seems to be gimmicky with the staff dressed in Disney type costumes and in my view is a very expensive tourist trap. One which I will definitely avoid in the future!
Disappointed
We attended afternoon tea and arrived promptly at 5.30pm we were greeted and shown to our seats in the beautiful Palm Court. We then waited 20 minutes before we were approached. The tea and sandwiches were very nice, but I found the scones disappointing. Our waiter was very softly spoken and very hard to understand and then at 7.15pm we were asked to leave which made the afternoon feel rushed.
Indulge Yourself
From the moment you are greeted at the hotel entrance to the time you leave, you enter a world of elegance and sophistication which all guest participated in. The Palm Court was beautiful and the service was impeccable. My partner started with a glass of champagne, and I had a gin and tonic. The three tier stand of tasty sandwiches. (my favourite was cucumber and cream cheese), pastries and cakes, and scones with jam and clotted cream was beautifully presented and 5 stars for taste. Earl Grey and Ceylon Orange Pekoe teas were selected from the extensive tea menu and a second plate of sandwiches was brought out as soon as the first plate was finished. Unfortunately we could not manage to eat the cake from the cake trolley. We were too full! But this gives us a reason to come back the next time we are holidaying from Australia. To us, this was a unique experience. I was so glad we indulged ourselves and experienced the Ritz afternoon tea.
Wonderful experience
I took my mum for her 80th birthday. It was an absolute wonderful experience, beautiful surroundings, lovely food and friendly attentive service . Yes it is expensive and yes it’s very busy and quite noisey with lots of chatting. But you can’t beat it and we both thoroughly enjoyed it and my mum loved her little complementary cake ( which was picked up from when I booked it ) and the box to take home what we didn’t eat !
Afternoon tea more like dog dinner
What a shame over priced just because they are the ritz that what I was told but front desk on completion I did ask for a refund or anythink as it then comes across as that why you have completed but we had the afternoon tea and not again stay away from now on want deal with this again I was disappointed in service and food need to look at the chef and think hard about a change. Had better in a little hotel in a country side shame on yourself can't run a restaurant just of the name on the door take a good hard look at your self's and sort your self's out shocking. Not like me to leave a bad one but this was not a good experience at all
Iconic for the wrong reasons
Very disappointed with our Afternoon Tea experience. Definitely not one of the most iconic experiences in the world. The food was delicious however the service and ambiance let it down. I was surprised at how busy the area is, it felt as though they have used every possible space to squeeze as many tables in as possible. As the Palm court is so busy, it’s very noisy and we were not able to enjoy the music. Initially service appeared good, however when we had our food and drink waiters didn’t come near us, it was difficult to request water that I needed. I had asked for champagne with our desserts nobody came back to ask if this was still required. The service was rushed, I felt their policy is “get them in and get them out as quickly as possible”. When it came to paying, I explained how neglected our table had been and the service charge was removed.
fabulous interior, the service lacks
Having afternoon tea at this renowned establishment was on my bucket list, but unfortunately, several aspects left us disappointed. The decor is undeniably stunning and luxurious. However, the service was subpar, and I believe there are many better options for afternoon tea in London, especially given the price here. They do offer a gluten-free afternoon tea, but my sandwich was served cold, straight from the fridge, and when we requested additional items, we had to wait a long time to receive them. My partner asked for a pescatarian option but was initially served a regular meat selection, which was later corrected. Despite the fabulous interior, the service lacks a personal touch and does not justify the cost.
Disappointed
Having read many of the reviews regarding afternoon tea at the Ritz I am left thinking I wish I had read them before making the booking for my friend’s birthday as I was decidedly underwhelmed. Arriving for a 3.30 booking I would not expect to then be asked if I wanted a box for cake at 4.45! Clearly the staff wanted everyone out to set up for the next sitting but not at all what I would expect for the price paid! The food was ok but have had better. I found the waiting staff for the most part helpful but there were several who were not and gave the impression they were ‘doing me a favour’ by allowing us to be there. I was disappointed and shall not return or recommend.
Afternoon Tea, race to the end!
Would have been 5 star had it not been a race to get us out earlier than our two hours allocated. Service not as special as expected considering its the Ritz. The sandwiches and pastries were delicious and special requirements were swiftly dealt with, however swift was the order of the day, our sandwiches were almost whipped away so they could bring the warmed scones, which we were not ready for at that point, my friend had to grab hers off the plate, we were still enjoying them, they should have just put the plate back down or asked 'ladies can take these?'. Said scones which they were in such a rush for us to get round too, were not good, chewy and tasteless, we left those, but being the main event they should be perfect, they didn't taste and feel homemade.
Exceptional
From beginning to end our afternoon tea was all we hoped it would be and more. Yes, we expected delicious sandwiches, cakes and scones. They didn’t disappoint! It was the exceptional welcome and service from all the staff that will stay with me. From the concierge at the door, the lady in the powder room ensuring the bathroom was kept to the highest standards, the gentleman offering to take our photo with the peonies in reception and of course to the wonderful team who ensured we were well fed and looked after whilst we enjoyed our tea. We came to celebrate the life of a dear friend and thank you all for ensuring we were able to do so in the most wonderful way.
Wonderful birthday afternoon tea
Delicious food, great champagne. We came for tea for Mum’s birthday. The service was attentive but not overwhelming. The whole experience was wonderful from beginning to end and made the day really special. The food was delicious. I loved the tea I tried. The waiter brought a little birthday cake. There was a pianist playing. Had a wonderful afternoon and will definitely be back.
Unforgettable experience.
To have afternoon tea with my family for my 80th birthday, in such a beatiful place. Everything was just wonderful. The food, service, and atmosphere. Thank you
Lovely Birthday Celebration!
My best friend and I were treated to a lovely celebration of our 60th birthdays at The Ritz. We enjoyed afternoon tea at a splendid hotel. The service was exemplary, the food was quite tasty, and the experience was, in our opinion, one of the quintessential London experiences one must have!
Putting on the Ritz!
The kids bought us afternoon tea atThe Ritz for our 40th wedding anniversary and it was also my wife's birthday when we went in January. Whilst it is a fairly formal occasion and there is a definitive dress code we were made welcome by the hotel staff and the service was exemplary from entering the hotel, being shown to our table, the attentiveness of the waiting staff, to the seemingly endless supply of food being brought to our table. There were nearly 40 different types of tea and coffee to choose from so I plumped for one of the Chai varieties whilst my wife had camomile tea. The food was delicious and I eventually had to call time as I couldn't eat any more. The maitre d ask us if we would like a doggie bag to take the birthday cake and various pastries ands scones away after the meal which he duly organised. All in all an impressive, albeit expensive, afternoon tea celebration.
Five star service, beautiful food and would highly recommend
I honestly could not recommend this experience enough, it was everything we hoped it would be and more! I purchased a gift voucher online for my Grandma's 70th, which arrived very quickly and was presented in a lovely box. 2 days before we were due to come we realised there were train strikes and called to rearrange, the staff on the phone were very helpful and we managed to grab a last minute cancellation for just 6 days later. When we arrived we barely got to the entrance when we were treated by a member of staff, my grandma is a powered wheelchair user and they promptly brought a ramp out and helped her inside. The staff could not have been anymore helpful with opening doors, laying out ramps and even helping transfer my Grandma into a chair and taking her wheelchair away. Tea, Sandwiches and cake arrived at our table within 5 minutes of us sitting down, and we were barely half way through the sandwiches when another plateful was added to our stand. I don't think we managed to finish a full cup of tea once during our experience, each time a member of staff passed they would top our cups up so it was a constant flow. Just as we began eating the little cakes a trolly was brought around with more cake options on and we were asked if there was anything else we would like. I can honestly say I have never had seen staff who look so genuinely happy to be at work or who are so quick to notice the little things. Unfortunately, before we'd finished my Grandma became quite unwell and we had to leave, I asked a member of staff if her wheelchair could be brought back to us and explained what was happening, honestly the staff could not have been quicker or more efficient to help! Within no more than 3-4 minutes a glass of ice water was brought over, the wheelchair was ready, the voucher was taken and our food had even been boxed up for us. Staff helped my Grandma back into her chair, offered first aid and even offered for us to sit in a lounge for as long as we needed if she needed some rest. We will absolutely be returning, our experience was far more than we could have hoped for and I would recommend this to anyone!

Good question. Currently the bidder will have to include the prepaid dinner price plus bid to secure the reservation. AT is currently working on an upcoming release where the prepaid amount and the bid amount are two separate transactions. Happy Bidding!
