Xin Chào Houston Reviews from The Last Year
No wonder this place is closing.
It's just so dismal as soon as you walk in. Oppressively warm. Only two people working the floor. Tables piled with food that hasn't been cleared. Everyone, diners and workers, just looks so unhappy.

They didn't have everything that is shown on the online menu. The food that we did try was ok. We actually left after having two appetizers to go eat somewhere else

Years ago, Xin Chao was quite the exclusive spot, and during my visit, the only thing I recall considering were the egg rolls. However, what truly captured my attention was the patio lighting in the evening, which created a cozy and cool ambiance. A few months back, I revisited, as it remains one of the select Vietnamese restaurants in Rice Military and I was pleasantly surprised to see they have congee on their menu and scallop crudo. Naturally I gave the crudo a try because who doesn't like an orange vinaigrette over with asian pear it sounds so refreshing. That dish wasn't as fresh tasting as a Japanese place and I wouldn't go out of ordering that but it wasn't bad. Their beef brisket dish is more of my jam though. I would definitely come back again and try more dishes. Just think of this place more as a fusion.
Cute spot off of Washington and love the modern interior!
Cute spot off of Washington and love the modern interior! Staffing was a bit questionable when I visited on Saturday morning - restaurant appeared to be completely closed and I almost left before someone opened the door about 10 minutes after opening. I'm giving some grace because they appear to be very understaffed, but it was a bummer that they could not serve drinks due to no bartender at the time. They have a crawfish deal (5 lb for $35) going on for the month. We ordered this with their signature Houston sauce (forgot the exact name) and mild spicy level. Pretty good overall and the crawfish were huge! They provided gloves but no bibs. We didn't get to try the other dishes but I hope to come back during off-season to check out some of their non-crawfish staples!
Food, service, and sanitation has gone down SO far since
Food, service, and sanitation has gone down SO far since the change in management/ownership. Xin Chao has been a go to spot for us the last two years because of the delicious food and generous happy hour, however, we will not be back. The waitstaff is lazy and uninviting. So many tables (5+) were not cleaned with food still on them despite there only being two tables with people to service. We were not given napkins and had to grab them ourselves. The bathrooms did not have paper towels as well. Food has absolutely gone down hill. If you come during dinner service, half of the menu will likely be unavailable. Many dishes have changed for the worse including fries, sauces, and the sliders no longer have high quality wagyu beef. The beef tasted like it had literally been cooked 10 times and the onions way under cooked. Tasted like dry cardboard. That was all we ordered this last go around, so I'm sure majority has also been changed. There's also something odd going on with anything fried. Practically everything tasted like fish so they're likely not keeping up with kitchen sanitation.
Food was amazing, service was beyond terrible.
The tables, chairs, and glassware were all dirty. We waited 20 minutes before we had to asked if we could have our order taken. He acted confused and it was very awkward ordering. Was constantly trying to get the waiters attention for simple things like silverware and napkins. Received an extra side of butter requested as we finished our meal, but met with contempt like we were difficult for asking. Wish I could give 5 stars because my meal was delish but service makes all the difference. & For such a high price, your customers shouldn't feel invisible or like a nuisance

Disappointed I ordered espresso martini, very odd that waiter said why don't you try lychee instead. I said, no I want espresso one. Then he says we are out of espresso. I ordered the drunken mussels from app side for dinner. It was no-go because out of mussels. We then discuss the prawn dish. I specifically ask if prawns are "breaded". He assures me "No, they are not breaded". The dish that arrived was basically orange shrimp.. breaded. The meal took sooo long to come out, that we had to skip dessert. Overheard Oscar was "stuck in traffic" which may explain the delay in service.

fantastic food - crawdads were just the best & id highly recommend (although maybe not for those who can't take 'heat' in their foods!)
Would not recommend going here while they have their
Would not recommend going here while they have their crawfish special going on. We were so excited to try the crawfish special - 5 lbs for $40 - and left 3 hours later incredibly disappointed and half full. We came on a Monday night, place was about 50% full, and the crawfish took 40 minutes to come out. This was the case for every single table that ordered crawfish. My guess is that the restaurant took on a special they are not ready for, resulting in both the kitchen and servers being "overwhelmed" despite the restaurant not being that busy at all. My table ordered nothing else besides crawfish so we just sat staring at each other for 40 mins straight. Crawfish was overcooked and seasoning was a bit salty. It's also ridiculous that they charge extra for simple garlic butter flavor. Mussels were also small compared to other places. Two hours after sitting down, we ordered dessert, and we should have known better, but we ordered anyway. Another 30 minutes passed before we received the apple pie. I'm also not saying this because I was hangry, but the famous pie tasted NOTHING like the one I had at Blind Goat years ago. There was little to no apple filling, while the crust was extremely thick, dense, and severely undercooked. The cherry on top of the entire experience was the entirely nonchalant attitude of the servers in response to the ridiculous wait they were putting every table through. Not once were we informed that there was going to be a long wait for crawfish orders, and not once did we received an apologize despite having to flag down the staff multiple times for service and spending 3 hours at their restaurant with just 2 people and 2 items ordered. After ordering the apple pie, I flagged down our server and asked whether it will take a long time if I ordered the coconut dessert. He bluntly responded "Yes" with a straight face as he looked at me for an answer. Who would dare order anything else when this is the attitude of your servers? Was so excited to try this place for Christina Ha (who btw no longer owns the place, which makes a lot of sense) and left very dissatisfied.
We waited so long to come here only because of the price.
We made a reservation but really didn't need it. It took a min for a waiter to come. I think I only saw a total of 3 men working. One was doing a ton of walking around. My glass of water had a fly in it and I had to ask for a new glass. The oyster looked AMAZING. But the flavor was lacking something. The problem really was that in almost every single oyster (10/12 of them) there were bits and pieces of shell. I know to be careful but these were cooked, pre-shucked and cleaned. I was terrified of biting down. Would I get shell or some crispy topping? I almost swallowed one too. It made my experience of eating these very un-enjoyable. For $38 I don't want to worry about breaking a tooth. The dumplings were good. But nothing too special. I got the prawns for my main and I really wanted to try a different sauce but accidentally ended up getting the same as what is on the oysters. Bummer. My husband got the flat noodles and he said he loved it. It was complex but good. Over all, I probably would not come back. The price and the experience weren't worth it to me although I did love the ambiance.
The dry rub crawfish were really good.
The spicy garlic crawfish were good. Viet oysters were really good. Drinks were a bit pricey. Overall a good experience
Ive been wanting to try this place out for awhile now but
Ive been wanting to try this place out for awhile now but left somewhat disappointed. I ordered some crawfish to-go. It said it would be ready 20 minutes after ordering, so I showed up 5 minutes past pick up time. It still wasn't ready. Then it took another 32 minutes of waiting. The restaurant didn't seem busy at all. It also would have been nice if they offered water or something while I waited. The one waiter that was there was nice and all but when he asked when I ordered, he mentioned he didn't "see anything" when he looked? Which.. was silly because I have the receipts. The crawfish itself was good. The crawfish was a good size. I tend to not like Vietnamese style crawfish but the H-Town bang flavor was pretty good. The ambiance is pleasant. Parking lot was small - I could see how it would be an issue if it were super packed. Now, from order time to pick up (57 minutes), I don't think it was worth the wait.

the pork belly bao was the star of the show! the pork was soft and tender and the bread was delicious ! the bo ne was also really good! everyone there was really nice and service was friendly. the restaurant is also really cute!

I have been here several times and the food/drinks are fantastic! This review is for Saturday happy hour last weekend. We arrived around 3pm and it was quiet only 2-3 other tables. First I had to swap my green velvet chair with the one next to us as it was dirty with food all over it. Service was unfriendly/unwelcoming. We asked to keep a menu and at some point it was taken. I asked for the menu back and said I wanted to order a second drink. The menu was brought right away but then no one came back to take the drink order or refill water, etc. At this point we hadn't seen anyone for 20 min and I was very close to getting up to refill my own water. A waiter came by and looked at the other two tables but not us so I waved my arms. Then he started to walk away so I yelled out "excuse me!". We ordered another drink and were asked if we were done eating, which we were. The check was brought with our drinks making us feel rushed out. The food/drinks were mostly good but a couple of things I noticed- the "sidewinder" fries are no longer in this style (confirmed by waiter) so the menu needs to be updated. The lychee martini was brought in a wine glass. The pork belly bao was about 70% fat, my first bite was all fat so I took it off the bun and cut away the fat. Then our dirty plates with pork fat sat there for ages and were not cleared after we paid and had our last drink. I tried making conversation with our waiter as I paid and he was so unfriendly it made me feel unwelcome.
So I gotta say, I've been here a few times before.
The food is GREAT, no complaints there. A bit expensive though (Seriously, almost 30 bucks for fried rice with a tiny bit of brisket... FRIED RICE.) I'm posting this review today because of how I was treated last night when I tried to eat there. First of all, parking is BAD. Don't even bother, Uber/Lyft over if you can instead of trying to park. They have a tiny parking lot up front and another tiny one in back, and street parking is sparse. Once I finally found parking I walked in. I planned on sitting/eating at the bar and I peeked in through the window before I went in to see how busy it was. There were a couple of groups at the bar but I did see empty seats between them (this part is important) I walked in and was "greeted" (more like noticed) by an older male waiter. I asked him if I could do a table for 1 because I wasn't too keen on being wedged behind two groups, and he said there were no tables available (even though it didn't seem very busy, it was a Monday evening, but maybe they had lots of reservations?) and said "there are only two of us here". Okay.... I asked him if I could sit at the bar because I knew there were at least a couple empty seats there. He just stared at me and repeated himself, "there are only two of us here, I'm sorry". and just stared at me until I left. I was FLABBERGASTED. I literally had no idea how to respond to this. I felt so confused and unwelcome, actually being turned away like that and not even letting me sit and eat at the bar. I was just stunned. I left and went to Cafe Ginger, where they know how to treat people well. Great service and food over there for a way better price. I will not be returning to Xin Chao.
Went here on a Sunday and it was such a vibe.
Ate and drank at the bar. Egg rolls are bomb and beef tip noodles were amazing. Go see cute bartender Alex!!
We went here to celebrate an 18 year old's birthday.
He wanted Viet-Cajun crawfish and Xin Chao has now merged with Saigon House on 1960 that recently closed. I believe that the chefs are siblings. We all love Tony Nguyen and Siagon House so we followed him here. Food: 1) Appetizers: * Pork Belly Bao: 10/10. This fried Bao is perfection. Softly crisp bao bun, decadent pork belly, cucumber, and a nice slather of beef talo aioli. * Not Ma's Eggrolls: 6/10. It was decent egg rolls, but I have had better. In fact, we prefer the shrimp rolls at Saigon House so maybe this will be on the menu shortly. * Viet Cucumber Salad: 4/10. Decent umami flavors but a tad bit salty according to my friends * Chicken Skewers: 8/10 according to my friends. *Crawfish: we all agreed that they need to get their transition flow to a full merger with Saigon House. While we all are used to Saigon House and would rank it a 9.5/10, Xin Chao gets an 8, for now. -For a crawfish shortage period, there was a good mix of sizes. -Flavors were decent, but they didn't get the ratio of H-Town bang for our 7lb order compared to our friends that ordered 5lbs. The folks that ordered 5lbs at a time were satisfied. -The Angry Dragon (spiciest) was more of a mild -The crawfish themselves were a little "fishy". -There was a little snail in our crawfish order but we understand that stuff like that can happen. -The corn and potatoes were good. *Ngyuen'er Ngyuen'er Chicken Dinner: 9/10. This tasted home made which was excellent. The chicken was juicy and the breading was like my mama made it. Perfectly crunchy, tasty, etc. Good value for the money. A half portion can comfortably feed 2 adults. *Ambiance: the restaurant is small and has a decent bar. There were neon lights and a cool vibe. The restroom was always clean. The patio on this perfect Houston evening was ahhhhmazing. Casual seating, cute lights, and a nice spot overall. ln summary, we understand that there are growing pains in mergers. The flavors of the crawfish were there, but the ratio of crawfish-flavor needs to be proportionalized better. Meaning, the 5lbs should taste like 7lbs, 10lbs, 20lbs, etc. We also need the Angry Dragon heat level back!!!! Tony Ngyuen and fam, we will follow you wherever you go for our crawfish. Still the best in HTown. Just some minor adjustments need to be made. We will definitely return.
I had the pleasure of experiencing Xin Chao recently during
I had the pleasure of experiencing Xin Chao recently during a lunar new year celebration. Our host worked with the chef to create a customized menu for her guests to try and let me tell you. Everything was amazing! Food was not only delicious but presentation was equally pleasing. The service was spectacular and the ambience was cozy. Some of the dishes we tried: Smoked beef cheek dumplings Smoked beef rib noodles Whole red snapper Five fungi congee Salted prawns Tofu & veggies Braised pork crispy rice Vegetarian fried rice Coconut bread pudding Now. I don't eat red meat or port. But on a special occasion I will taste a little bit of beef. This was one of those nights. And I think my favorites from this evening were the dumplings (OMG they melt in your mouth), the congee, snapper, and bread pudding. I love bread pudding and I like that this one didn't feel heavy and the coconut gave it a twist from the traditional. This little jewel in the heights is a new fave for me! I can't wait to go back. Add this to your list if you haven't been.
Enjoyed a Sunday lunch at Xin Chao.
Was also pleasantly surprised to see they do weekend happy hour. The food, the service and the ambiance are fantastic. Good wine list and beers as well as mixed drinks. We had the egg rolls and Pork belly Bao as starters and both were fantastic. Main dishes we tried were the steak and eggs and Pork and crispy rice also fantastic. Cannot wait to go back and try the whole fish, the mussels and the soft shell crab.
First time at Xin Chao in over a year.
.. and was a bit disappointed. We went for the special HTX Mini Restaurant Week. I was excited for the pork belly and they apparently were completely out of pork related menu items... which always sounds like bad planning on their part but I obviously know there is more to that haha. For drinks... their lychee martini was amazing. Highly recommend! However, make sure they charge you the right $... menu said $13 but receipt was charging $14 for them!! For food we shared the egg rolls (pretty average) and the chimichurri oysters which were good but overpowered the actual oyster itself. Had a nice kick to them. For mains we shared the fried chicken - which was yummy - and the salmon special. The caramelized salmon special was the best dish of the night but came out so delayed - probably 20 minutes after our other main (the chicken) came out which was very odd timing... server kept saying it was on the way 100 times. Overall, still a nice spot but I probs won't go back anytime soon.

Great Service - amazing dinner!!
Read about the site in NYT and bought a reservation at Mother Wolf in LA 2 days later. Worked great and the food was amazing!!!
Worked perfectly!
Got the reservation (that I couldn't get anywhere else) and was able to entertain a group of friends at the infamous Bern's Steakhouse.
Got into Nobu Malibu
Wonderful! My parents are visiting and we have wanted to go to Nobu Malibu for years. I tried getting a reservation myself but it was next to impossible. So glad I was able to buy a reservation on appointment trader for a decent price!
Very easy
Was very hesitant going into this experience but am glad to say that it worked out very well ! will definitely use appointment trader in the future
Fabulous Lunch
I was veeeeeerry skeptical that this would work, particularly at a restaurant as hard to get into as Nobu Malibu, and it was perfect! We had lunch outside on the patio and it was fabulous!
Great reviewer team
Just wanted to take a second to shout out the reviewer team. Even though they probably review hundreds of listings and bids a day, they still take the time to leave great comments and respond relatively quickly. Thanks!
Incredible
I got a reservation to Don Angie, which I've been trying to book for weeks! I am very happy with this service.
Best platform out there!
Super simple, easy, and fast to secure reservations for hard-to-get restaurants and locations!
This app is life changing
This app has opened my world up to so many wonderful new experiences I would never have the chance to have without access to this awesome app! 10/10!
Worked perfectly
Was a little nervous at first but was pleased to see that the booking went through flawlessly.

Worked well, got me into a restaurant with no availability
I was skeptical, and I still don't really know how they managed to find this hard-to-find reservation, but it was a win-win from my point of view, and I'll use this service again.
Last minute reservation for Delilah Las Vegas
Got a last minute reservation, dinner for 2 at Delilah Las Vegas: super impressed! The process was simple, transaction seamless. We had an amazing time! Couldn’t be happier! 😍
It works!
Ok at this point I've attended a reservation purchased on AT by a friend and sold a reservation personally. Both worked pretty smoothly, nothing sketchy about it. A few areas for improvement including a way to more directly communicate between buyers and sellers, but the app always seems to be in development. AT customer support is really(!) responsive and helpful too if you have questions!
Money transfer
As a seller, I like the fact i have the ability now to transfer money out of my AT account and into a bank account. Makes getting the money much easier then the process before.
Love this app
Got to go to places otherwise unreachable
Easy Access
Very easy to get into one of the hardest restaurants to reserve in New York.
Whose name will my reservation be under when I arrive at the venue?
It can be under your name or a name you choose! Some reservation offers already include the AppointmentTrader Transfer Service which will transfer the reservation in to your name. If its not included you can add it on after buying the reservation for a small fee. One thing on that though: As many reservations become available at last minute, taking a reservation in someone else name is quick and great for privacy. Most reservations on AT are listed with a virtual phone number, so all you need to do is present the phone number at the hostess stand and you are good to go!
Payouts Blocked Because of Sell Through Rate
Does anyone know how AT plans to handle cases where a seller is quitting the platform but has a sell through rate <25%? The error message I got said to fill more bids or find other ways to increase the rate.
Is AT really going to block sellers from withdrawing their money? Especially revenue made before the sell through rate was introduced??
Tune into NBC News - Top Story Tonight 7:40p ET
Let’s go. Get more people placing bids!
I will give you 50% of ALL of my PROFITS if you teach me how to make profits?
LOL. Thank you The New Yorker.
Appointment
Transferring reservations is not supported in AT. Why not just use the name in the AT screenshot?
Buyers interested in Bern's Steakhouse: PLEASE READ
Same goes for 4 Charles and I Sodi
Prepaid Reservation Fee
Agreed. Ultimately not addressing this month after month is clearly resulting in a drop in certain venue’s rankings & sales.
Congrats on 3 mil
🍾🍾🍾🍾🍾🍾🧨🧨🧨 now on to 30 mill!
Need to cancel a bid, not getting a response… how do I do it?
Click on "Take off the Market Option" in your portfolio
Working on your bid?
Your bid has been “matched” with a reservation. From the time a reservation has been located, the seller of the reservation must connect with moderator to give transfer information for reservation. If the seller;however, does NOT respond to reservation transfer, then your bid is reprocessed and returns to the first step, which is connecting your request to a reservation.
Process after bid is accepted.
Hey @EvocativeFold67, welcome to appointmenttrader! Once the reservation is in your portfolio, you definitely own the timeslot, the review team would not have approved the trade if the reservation wasn't confirmed - so you are going :-) Judging from your post you bid today and are going tomorrow - don't worry as long as you initiated the name transfer, you are good - the transfer service has to work with the opening hours of the reservation team of the respective venue. You will likely see the transfer confirmation a couple hours before your reservation time.
Where do the Reservations on AppointmentTrader come from?
Mostly from people who don't need their reservations or appointments any longer. AT has no relationship with places listed and acts as a platform connecting buyers and sellers making sure that listed reservations are real and that privacy is not compromised when transacting.
What happens if my bid expires unanswered?
Hey @FluffyStar64, thanks for the question! When you place your bid the amount gets transferred in a deposit account, the second you either cancel your bid or a few minutes after the bid expires the funds are moved back into your main account from where you can refund it to your payment method or use for other transactions.
