Open air restaurant, good seafood
Kind of family street restaurant. Nothing fancy but very good seafood. Service good. Nice cold beer.
Be the first to ReplyGood food reasonable prices
For RM 107
We got :
1) Prawns cooked in a coconut. Fresh plump prawns cooked with a Tom yum-like broth. Highly recommended
2) claypot tofu - the tofu itself was smooth and jiggly but the bamboo clams were not fresh and were very sandy making them quite unpleasant to eat. Not recommended.
3) soft shell crab with salted egg yolk- crisp soft shell crab slathered in salted yolk , simple and tasty. Delicious and recommended.
4) deep fried squid -fresh squid , crispy crunchy batter . Was delicious. Highly recommended
Not worth it
Recommended by so many, this place turned out to be a bit disappointing. We ordered different kinds of shrimps and shells and asked them to cook in different ways. But honestly, the seafood I tried in Sabah was way better than them, in terms of freshness or deliciousness.

We called in here for dinner as it looked really busy with locals and it offered fresh seafood.Well the food was just wow,it was so tasty, filling and reasonably priced as well. This restaurant doesn’t look much from outside but the food speaks for itself.Try it out,you won’t be disappointed.
Be the first to ReplyGood value seafood
My family of 6 went there twice for dinner. We liked the fried squid, coconut prawns, steamed fish and stir fried chilli clams. We were lucky that the red grouper fish was very fresh. The steamed egg white prawns was not that great. The prawns were peeled before steaming, the prawns lost most of sweetness. On the second dinner, prawns were not as fresh. Generally, it good value meal.
Be the first to ReplySeafood restaurant at local pricing that serves fairly reasonable good food
This place is nothing to shout about in terms of its ambience as it is not at a seafront or nicely decorated seafood place you would associate the place with. However for its pricing and with careful selection of the live seafood if you can pick them well, I will recommend this place in Penang, if you die die must eat seafood there. Reasonable pricing and given a choice as to how you want the seafood and vegetables to be cooked, I think this place offers good value.
We had a dish of steamed fish, two portions of vegetables, frog legs, claypot tofu & clams and it cost us about MYR154.00 for 4 persons. I thought was fairly reasonable.
Normal Food But Good Value
The following were the food i ordered (for 3 adults & 3 children):
1. Salty Soft Crab
2. Steam Red Fish
3. Coconut Curry Prawn (Alot of prawns)
4. Vege
5. Half side herbal chicken
6. Minced pork taufu
All these less than RM200.00
Da Shu Xia Seafood House – sumptuous and fresh seafood in Penang
Da Shu Xia Seafood House has a long history, starting its operations under a big tree at Weld Quay, across from the ferry terminal since 1974. On 31 December 2014, the restaurant relocated to 177C, Lebuh Victoria (at the junction of Lebuh Victorian and Gat Lebuh Armenian). It is brighter, airy and more spacious plus an air-conditioned dining area is available. Right at the back of the restaurant anchors a huge boat with dining tables. Kids would find dining on the boat rather exciting.
You start off by choosing the seafood you would like to eat from an impressive array on ice trays that keep them fresh. Other sea creatures are alive in aquariums. The restaurant staff would weigh the fish or crabs that you have chosen and let you know the cost. It is common practice that if you find the price steep, you should opt for something cheaper that would suit your budget. Once you have selected your different types of seafood, you let the staff know how you want them to be cooked – steamed, stir-fried or baked with your choice of sauces. Looking at the photos on the wall can aid your decisions.
At your table, a complimentary appetiser – rectangle bite-size poppadoms with a bowl of curry should be waiting for you. Expect lightning fast service even at peak hours. Your food should reach your table in no time, along with a pot of steamed plain white rice.
The live ketam batu (mud crabs) sold here are usually meat crabs. There is a variety of ways you can cook the crabs, from simple baking to stir-frying in a variety of sauces – sweet and sour and accompanied by extras such as salted eggs, kam hiong, black pepper, chilli and butter. While I love all of them, the sweet and sour style holds a special place in my heart. The rich creamy sauce is divine and adds a great contrast to the sweet and succulent white flesh of the crab. Eating crab is a messy affair. Use your fingers for a finger-licking satisfying experience.
When it come to fish, freshness is everything. If you are drowning the fish in sauces and curry, I would recommend the cheap option of using a red snapper. One amazingly delicious way is to steam the fish in a rich, turmeric-base Nyonya sauce that is tangy, spicy and sweet all at the same time. However, if you are going for an expensive fish, the best way to enjoy the delicate sweetness of the flash is simply to steam it in a light soy sauce. If the size of the fish is big, you could request that the fish be halved and cooked in two different styles. Another signature dish is the black pomfret topped with a thick, dark non-spicy gravy with crunchy pork rinds. Simply delicious!
If you are ordering prawns, try the spicy coconut prawns or the Nestum prawns. Ask your waiter to run down the list of existing options before you decide.
A dish not to missed is the ultra spicy, sweet and sour steamed clams. The powerful chillies draw out the sweetness of the clams. It is tongue-numbing, sour with a hint of sweetness, aromatic and simply addictive.
For another deep-fried favourite, order the crispy soft-shell crabs coated in a salted egg batter. Consuming it is pretty effortless and the dish will be “polished off” in no time.
If you like aubergines, you will enjoy this dish. Stir-fried with a fermented soy bean paste and spring onions, it is simple but tastes delicious! The soft, creamy texture of the aubergines absorbs the flavours and goes very well with plain white rice.
If you have plenty of complicated flavours on the table, it is always good to keep the garden greens simple. Stir-frying with garlic and oyster sauce should suffice.
Claypot tofu is a treasure trove of goodies. When you have children at the table who fear spicy food, this dish would be a winner. The strips of roasted pork add more dimension to the dish.
Besides seafood, the restaurant also has other delectable offerings including egg, pork and chicken dishes. Include crispy deep-fried belacan chicken wings, aromatic chicken steamed with herbal goodness and braised pork knuckle into your list of dishes to relish.
As for the beverages, try the apple-lemon juice, ice-blended series or herbal drinks. Drinks and food are under two different bosses, so do pay separately.
Having stood the test of time (for over three decades), Da Shu Xia Seafood House must have a winning formula that appeals to the locals. Give it a try and you will see why. Being popular among Penangites, making prior reservations is a wise move, especially if you are planning to dine there with a big group during weekends and public holidays. Eating seafood can be relatively expensive in general, but not if you are wise in your selection of the types of seafood. Offering more than just seafood, a meal here does not have to cost an arm and a leg (but it can should you decide to splurge).
Careful that they are really cooking what you have chosen from their tanks
Unscrupulous and dishonest !!
Went to this shop middle of July 2019 with wife, besides other dishes we chose the mantis prawn cooked with salted egg. Went to the tank to select 2 medium size mantis prawn. The assistance scooped 2 prawns and went to weigh for pricing. She also weigh the prawns together with the tank water (water amounted to nearly full teacup just to give you a size perspective) of course that will add up the price of the prawn. I told her hey how could you weigh the prawns together with the water, which she then grudgingly remove the water while mumbling something. That is first dishonest encounter.
Then after awhile when the cooked mantis prawn dish arrived at our table, after digging in we discovered the meat texture was not fresh or you could put it mildly it was rotting. It is as if the 2 prawns have died for sometime now and kept in the freezer to serve to some innocent victim. We know what is fresh mantis prawn taste like and it is not the first time we ordered mantis prawn. Also it was still very alive and kicking half an hour before when I chose that 2 prawns.
I wanted to raise this issue with the lady who took our orders earlier but my wife say forget about it, don't raise a ruckus and just finish off the rest of the other dishes and leave. We left the mantis prawns dish literally untouched.
So ladies & gentlemen just be careful when you go to this shop in future, make sure they cook what you have selected from their tanks and not from something that have died and stored in their freezer for awhile.
Just so you know, you have lost future business from me with this un-ethical business conduct!
