Not so "Wau" to be honest.
This is re: a delivery order, so I can't comment on the service or place. But the food. It's okay. But for the price, it should be a big wow/wau. I ordered various dishes which seemed to taste the same, even the descriptions were very different. Here's what I can comment on: - Salt and Pepper Coconut -- Kind of interesting. But too fried to enjoy the flavor. Dipping sauce was like spicy mayo... liked it but it kind of didn't go... - The Roti Telur wasn't bad. But not memorable. Too heavy without enough flavor. - Crispy Tom Yum Lotus Root - Flavor is decent, but so fried it's not "worth" the flavor for the way I felt after I ate it. - Peranakan Laksa / Veg & Tofu- Soothing... But I've had way better. - Honey Chili Sambal Chicken Wings - Tasty, but not that unique. - Pineapple Flower Curry / Veg & Tofu - Not good. SKIP! Doesn't taste like anything other than hot and somehow no flavor. - Coconut Rice Side - Interesting because of the coconut flakes - Pandas Coconut Tiramisu - Looks like someone squeezed overly sweet green icing over a bunch of lady fingers with coconut shreds. Sickly sweet and doesn't ship well. It kind of looks like a kid create the recipe and made it. Sorry to be negative. I really wanted to like it, I was hoping for authentic and got something that was weak and not so interesting or different. Note that they should mark or label what they pack--hard to tell what's what--and what goes with what... On the plus side, they have interesting choices and delivery was as promised.
Be the first to ReplyReally good! Softest fried calamari I've ever had.
The noodles were also delicious - actually full of umami and deep flavor, rather than the usual sugar and msg that you get at a lot of SE Asian restaurants in the city. I had zero expectations (I've never had a good one), but even the vegetarian kale dumplings were good. Friendly service as well. A bit loud with the music and people, but otherwise highly recommend for the food.

WAU is from the same team behind Laut Singapura, one of my favorite restaurants in the city. Made a reservation for dinner on a Saturday and tried: + Lemongrass sour cocktail - great + Passionfruit cocktail - awesome + Smoked banana cocktail - great + Roti canai - awesome + Larb gai - great + Peranakan laksa - excellent, though the one at Singapura is better. It had the largest mussels ever!! + Nasi pedang - amazing, the rice was so fragrant + Taro tiramisu - perfect, maybe the highlight for me + Lychee creme brรปlรฉe - awesome Need to return for the WAU noodle - another table ordered it and it looked amazing. Awesome spot overall!

I had the Rendang Beef and would highly recommend anyone going to get it. It is quite spicy, so if that is a concern of yours when browsing menus, I might softer something else. I went for a date, and I could see many other patrons doing to the same. Whether it be for food or just drinks, I'd recommend it here. Following the experience she said, "we have to come again" if that means anything to you. I went on a Tuesday evening, and there didn't appear to be any wait. I would make a reservation if you are going at any other time
Be the first to ReplyPretty good but not outstanding.
Better than average for the upper west side. Nasi goring was good. Also larb salad, beef dish

Be the first to ReplyThe food was amazing and the service was truly wonderful.
I can't wait to go back!! Cocktails were on point, incredible flavor and well spiced. Would have been nice to have onnnneeee more piece of potato with the Roti but everything was amazing they still well earned the five stars!
Be the first to ReplyWas really disappointed.
.. First of all, the food wasn't great. They are serving some of the popular street dishes that you would normally find in Southeast Asian countries but the flavors are all over the place. The presentations were nice, but the dishes were way too salty and oily. And that's about it. Where were the bold, umami flavors that these dishes embody?! Seems like this restaurant is more geared towards the upper-class white American palate (think of General Tso's Chicken, that sort of things). If you are looking for an authentic taste of SEA, DO NOT COME HERE. Secondly, the pricing is INSANE. I guess you are paying for the customer service experience (which was very nice) and the high UWS rent. Or restaurant could be simply price gouging...you never know. Charging more than $22 for a simple Pad Thai is unimaginable, unless you really have something to show for it (which they don't). At home, with the right ingredients, you can make this popular dish just as well for under $7! Sadly will not be returning.
Be the first to ReplyGood and drinks were amazing.
Cons: bathroom needs a serious cleaning Pros: drinks were pretty and yummy Food was AMAZING.

5 stars I started dinner off with the mango sriracha cocktail (delish!), and then we shared the ridiculously amazing black pepper prawns, spicy roti canai, INSANELY good nasi goreng and capped off the meal with some of the best mango sticky rice that I've had in a very long time. The service was very very good. They had the right balance of attentiveness and were really wonderful with making sure we didn't order too much food. I also really loved the decor, there are a lot of Malaysian and Thai design elements scattered throughout the space. All in all, I was very very impressed. I cannot wait to return to try more of the incredible menu. I'm so glad my friend found this spot!
Be the first to ReplyOrdered beef rendang for delivery.
Had to throw out one-half of the dish because they used cheap fatty beef. Just couldn't swallow big globs of fat. For the price they charge they could use leaner beef.

Made a reservation for two people on a Friday evening through their website. Nice decor inside with a multi-level setup for seating, as well as booths for cozier parties.Started off with the Roti Canai ($9.50) - a few pieces of savory sweet bread alongside a thick coconut curry. Perfect place to begin a meal and incredibly warming. For the main course, ordered the Redang Beef ($28) - huge chunks of steak marinating in a spicy curry. Despite the deep color, not overly spicy, though the side of rice helps. Some interesting options for dessert as well, but decided to pass for the night.Good service and laid back ambiance. Worth the price just for the comfort food on a cold day.

The food tasted amazing and the service was impeccable. Quality ingredients and overall astounding ambiance.

We walked-in to WAU on a Monday for lunch and the indoor and outdoor seating both are very inviting and looked comfortable. Their 4 person booths especially are very well placed - so if it's more than 2 people in your group, I'd recommend grabbing those! The place smells very "fishy" - a welcoming aroma for seafood lovers. We weren't sure of the portion sizes, but with a menu priced slightly on the expensive end (mains on an average cost $26), we decided to order mains directly and were glad we made that choice. We got the Murtabak ($18) and WAAAU Noodle with Tofu ($26) - both dishes were amazing - very flavorful and perfect level of spice. The presentation of WAAAU noodle was specifically waaauuu!Service was excellent - friendly staff, and food arrived within 20 minutes of ordering. Noise levels were on the lower side. Overall, great experience. Might visit again and will definitely recommend to friends and family craving some nice Malaysian food!

Spicy, flavorful, bold, and delicious. I want to come back and try more!! We ate in the outdoor area as a date and it was great. Highly suggest the laksa!

I was brought here by a native Malaysian who approves of Wau enough that he selected it for a large group he was hosting (he did manage expectations and qualify that there is no Malaysian food in NYC that is good as it in Malaysia or Singapore). There were 15 of us (which is the max the restaurant was willing to accommodate) and given the small size of the restaurant, I was surprised they were even willing to do that. Cozy spot on the UWS with a variety of Thai, Singaporean and Malaysian food. We were advised to steer away from Thai, which was easy to do as I was deciding between either the Singaporean Chicken Rice and the Malaysian Nasi Lemak. Having lived in Singapore I'm always craving and looking for a good Chicken Rice dish in the states, but given that I've never been able to find it, decided not to risk it and went for the Nasi Lemak, which I knew would be good (as it was recommended by the host). It was a great assortment of items (Coconut rice, rendang chicken sambal shrimp, salted peanuts + anchovies, hard-boiled eggs, cucumber) with a lot of flavor and had a good kick / spice. Others who ordered it found it to be too spicy but I have a high tolerance and would rate it a 3-4 spice level on a scale of 1-10. I polished off the entire plate if that tells you anything.Solid 4 stars.

Ambiance cozy but lively, but more important the food was layers and layers of flavor. Started off with the shrimp toast and chili wontons which were some great first bites! For dinner we had the Singapore Chilli Crab, which had so much crab to the point that I kept commenting on the volume of crab, and Singapore-style Char Kway Teow, which was a nice texture and savory contrast to the crab. HOWEVER, The star of the show was the lychee crรจme brรปlรฉe. The lychee popping bubbles brightened the cold crรจme, and charred sugar, I would go back for just that. Incredible.

Terrific food! Our favorite was the Rendang Beef! Definitely would come again - they even had it decorated for vday!
Be the first to ReplyMe and my wife had our Valentine day dinner here.
I heard good things about this place. The ambiance was beautiful. The place is very small however they do have outside sitting. Food was amazing. Our issue was that we felt the hostess and waitress were rushing us to finish up. Literally there was only 4 other couples and every other seats were empty. It wasn't even busy. We were told we can only stay a minimum of 1 hour, which is understandable, we only stayed for about 25 minutes. They didn't allow us to finish our food or ask if we want it to go.

The food is tasty, the menu is varied with something for everyone. The roti is delicious. The Wau noodle dishes were fantastic, we tried two different varieties and both were well received. ย The service and general hospitality could be more welcoming and a bit friendlier.
Be the first to ReplyWorst service ever.
Made us wait for 40 mins only to request us to wait for another 20 mins. Could have simply said no that it will not be feasible
Be the first to ReplyVery very tasty.
The lamb biryani tastes so delicate! Fried noodles were yummy also. I only wish it were spicier
Be the first to ReplyLet me just be that corny guy who says "WOW" when they eat
Let me just be that corny guy who says "WOW" when they eat at Wau. The food and service are so good, and it's unfair that I have to travel to the UWS to experience this. The decor is really nice and chic; it looks like a place that should be filmed/used for TV shows about living in NYC. And the service was really great; I spilled water on the floor and they were so nice to me and my clumsiness. For cocktails, we ordered the Wau-lah and the Bubble Trouble; I loved the flavors of ginger in the both of them. For appetizers, we had the savory donuts and the wontons in chili oil; I've never tasted a chili oil so good and so robust. The savory donuts were filling and packed with meat and filling. The Chilean sea bass entree was a pleasant shock to my senses; it was light but so much flavor in the seafood sauce. At other places I've eaten, the sauce can have a watery quality with minimal flavor. But at Wau, it was at full power; I could have drank this as a soup. The dessert was the lychee creme brulee which was sweet and light, definitely necessary after the feast I had. I can't wait until I eat here again.
Be the first to Replyjust had the most wonderful dinner at Wau.
i was wow'ed by wau! (haha corny i know)breaking this review into a few parts: FOOD- food was honestly very delicious! we ordered the following dishes: 1. butter garlic prawns - this was my favorite dish of the night! it's deep fried shrimp and stir fried with chilis and crispy curry leaves. i would come back alone just for this dish. the shrimps were huge and fried to perfection. it was SO crispy and a lot of flavor profiles going on. it came out piping hot which is always a huge plus. must get app!! 2. roti canai - this was so good! so my fave roti canai is from nyonya (malay restaurant in chinatown) but i gotta say i think i might like this one more! this had a better consistency of crispy and chewy roti. cus some places make it so thin that it ends up just crumbling but this place made it perfectly where it was crispy but strong enough to not fall apart when you rip it apart and dip it in the curry. curry was good as welll - wish it came with more it was so good! 3. honey chili sambal chicken wings - the wings are hugeeee! flavor is good if you like sweet and spicy, reminded me of korean fried chicken wings. they were big, plump, juicy, crispy and flavorful for the main course we had:1. charred lobster tail with noodle - this was presented beautifully and so decadent! it did not disappoint. the lobster tail was large and cooked to perfection. it was charred perfectly with a nice char aroma. portion was a good amount didn't even finish all the noodles was so full! 2. roasted hainanese chicken - i was expecting regular hainanese chicken but def very different. this dish reminded me more of a cantonese banquets dish which is like a sweet soy fried chicken. it was still good but not hainanese chicken. dessert:if you love thai tea you will love this. i loved this dessert it ended the meal perfectly !! SERVICE-service was good, servers were quick and helpful. very attentive without feeling rushed. PRICE-this place is a bit pricey to be honest, certain dishes are expensive and some very reasonable as well. DECOR- everything was so cute ! ambiance was wonderful and it was very clean and i honestly just loved the decor
