Terrific Indian food in this neighborhood spot
Three of us enjoyed innovative cocktails, good wine list. Fantastic food...one starter and three classic entrees with rice left us with food to take home. Server guided us in getting a balanced tasting o curry dishes.

OMGosh! The freshest Indian food outside of the Great Subcontinent. They chef is more willing to accommodate vegetarian diners. The garlic naan was tasty, and the tofu tikka masala was so delicious. Make a reservation and head to Noble Square.

this place is fancy compared to places on devon and has prices to match. the decor is elegant but unless there's stuff in the back that we didn't see (we were seated at the bar), it could be any cuisine. my friend wanted to try a lot of dishes, so we did, but we like different spicing levels so i didn't sample any of his dishes except i tried the vegetable pickle he ordered hich seemed plenty spicy to me. too spicy/not that spicy was kind of our theme--he didn't find anything too highly spiced but the first round or my lamb korma was mistakenly spiced to the same level as his food and i had to send it back, which i try never to do. everyone was very nice about it and got me a milder version very quickly--that version was delicious. i also tried the goat keema naan wnich was very tasty but not all that different than non-goat keema naan i've had elsewhere. i had water but my friend had the mango habanero lassi and seemed to like that a lot, too. service was very nice--we were there watching the bar tenders make cocktails which was fun. not too noisy for conversation, at least while we were there. we went right before going to a show at chicago dramatists and it's a good choice for a pre-theater dinner.

This small west Chicago himalayan restaurant was fantastic. I ordered a cocktail which was fantastic. Presented in a wine decanter with the liquid on the bottom and smoke filling the remainder. Our server slowly poured it over ice at the table. It was so good I ordered a second. We shared our dishes and every plate had great flavor. The food was fresh with great seasoning. I highly recommend this restaurant and I can't wait to go again.
Be the first to ReplyExcellent Food, but they're getting cocky.
Have been to Vajra 4 times in 2 months. The food is superb, no question about it. We always opine that somebody's Indian grandmother is in the back cooking away, because you're getting the real deal in Indian cooking!
But beware: The last time we were there the prices had jumped up about 20-25% across the board. What was excellent food at prices comparable to other nicer Indian establishments had abruptly jumped to expensive. This has changed our plan to go as often - and we will certainly not go as a casual drop-in on a random Wednesday night any longer.
Their specialty drinks have always been pricey ($14+ per drink), and they're not ready for prime-time with basic drink orders (e.g. scotch on the rocks, gin and tonic) It is their decision to have such specialty drinks that, in some way, competes and/or doesn't seem to fit in with Indian food. But that's just our observation.
The wait staff is young and inexperienced and we've had a few forgivable instances of mix-ups or delays as a result. We mention this only to be aware of it, not to be critical.
All in all, Vajra's food is excellent, but they may be getting a bit too big for their britches. Why the large price jump? We would like to see them be successful and stick around the neighborhood - but the price jump will curtail our visits. The must be reminded that they are not in River North or on the Gold Coast.
great cooking and good drinks
The food here was incredible. Nice size portions and tasty unique Indian dishes. Try the smoky whisky. I do not like whisky, but this drink was great! Nice atmosphere and great service too. Can't wait to visit again.

Wonderful Indian restaurant that did it right. Service was on point as well as the ambiance. Food was very good. I wasn't terribly impressed with the dahi balla (for $8 you get two little dumplings that are decent). But the biryani was really good. Excellent cocktail selection.

We were in down town and decided to try this new place, when we got there they had few tables, the server was very pleasant and the hostess was very welcoming.Server made some great recommedations and few minutes later the owner showed up and being our first visit recommended some excellent cocktails to start, whisky and gin based, very different great presentation and refreshing.
Also for dinner chef came out and made some recommendations, Duck chhoela,Goat kabab,
For dinner Goan fish curry, canteen chiken,.
Excellent experience.
Talking to the chef and the owner it was good to see a combination of great knowledge of kitchen and bar.
Recommend very highly,we definitely will be going back multiple times.
