I loved this place. Really friendly staff that were helpful with the menu. They were extremely helpful with the drinks menu. I love sake but can’t pick them yet. The server was great! Food was excellent.

Great atmosphere, fantastic food!! Love it!! Reservation is a must unless you get there early and don't mind sitting at the bar.
Be the first to ReplyTABLE TIME LIMIT!!!
First of all, the food was superb. So no complaints there. However, BEWARE that there is a 1.5 hour table limit and they will kick you out when your time's up!!! Our party of 4 had a reservation at 7 p.m. that was made online and we arrived promptly. It was our first visit, but we were never advised of a table time limitation until towards the end of our meal when the waitress informed us that we would need to leave the table by 8:30 p.m. to make space for the next party. We were incredulous at this news and asked to speak with the manager. I had just received my desert and my friends decided that they wanted to order one as well. But the waitress told us that it would take time to prepare and that there was not enough time. The manager came over with a surly attitude. He told us that we were advised of this policy by the hostess when we arrived. That was a bold outright LIE. I had to scarf down my desert and didn't even have a chance to enjoy it. Had I known that, I would not have ordered it. The manager was totally unyielding and did not care one bit. We were totally outraged that we were not informed the policy in advance and it was not stated anywhere when the reservation was made. Had we known, we could have studied the menu in advance and managed our time at the table accordingly. It was extra aggravating that the manager continued to insist that we were informed of the policy thereby implying that we were liars. If this is their policy, then it needs to be advised in writing in advance when making the reservation. There should also be a notice placed on the table as well. Due to this upset, we advised that we won't be returning, but the manager did not care one bit.
Be the first to ReplyGreat find in Pittsburgh
Umami is a bit different from the normal Pittsburgh dining scene. The vibe inside is really cool, decorations are fun. We went at 7pm on a Friday night. They were really busy and reservations are a must on a week-end night. You may be able to get a seat at the bar, but by the time we left, it too was full. Our server was fantastic, She was knowledgeable, helpful and service was fast. Cocktails were perfect! The food was really good, but a tad over-sauced. That seems to be the theme in Pittsburgh unfortunately and while Umami had less sauce on their food than other restaurants we have tried here, it was still a bit more than we are used to. They had a spin on their normal okonomiyaki the night we were there, using pastrami beef tongue as the meat and it just melted in our mouths. So while saucy, the food was cooked just right. The Zucchini Dengaku also melted in our mouths and was full of flavor, but again, a little more moist than we expected. It was almost dessert-like, which I guess isn't necessarily a bad thing. Saucy food, but don't get me wrong, super flavorful. We will try it again.
Be the first to ReplyBest Sushi In Pittsburgh!
We were visiting Lawrenceville and decided to try out Umami for an early dinner. We didn't have a reservation so we sat at the sushi bar. DELICIOUS!!!! Highly recommend a reservation!
Be the first to ReplyIncredible Dinner!
Four of us had an incredible dinner here last week! We enjoyed hot and cold sake and signature cocktails. All of our dishes were delicious- uni, gyoza, octopus balls, edamame, quail eggs wrapped in bacon. The highlight was the okonomyaki- a true “party in our mouths” and waaaaay better than we had in Japan! We also had a new dessert - chocolate balls that melted in one’s mouth! Will definitely return when in Pittsburgh!

Whoa what a cool place. As we were walking up the many steps to get there, we were thinking/ wondering what will we find! Then holy cow! The coldest vibe. You have options to sit at the bar, tables, or seating area where you can watch the chefs cook. Nice food selections. I personally liked the skewers. The Wagyu beef!! And shrimp. I’m looking forward to going back.
Be the first to ReplyGreat range of options
This place has a great range of both food and drink options. In particular, they had a great Japanese whisky selection. We tried really a little bit of each from small bites from the grill and a piece of sushi each to ramen and okonomiyaki. The okonomiyaki was probably the overall highlight. Good service throughout the night as well. We arrived at open and it was pretty full within the first hour.

Must have reservations. We had the beef tenderloin, pork belly, chicken skins, shrimp, king trumpet, sashimi salmon, sashimi maguro tuna, and the list goes on. We loved it all. Service was great. We will be back.
