Start with the fact that this part of Fishtown has zero parking, so you need to park on the sidewalk in front of someone's home, and then walk several blocks to the restaurant. The restaurant has a strange layout. The tables are small and placed too close together, and the chairs are flimsy and uncomfortable. This is all before you get to the food! The few drinks are bizarre. The negroni was an undrinkable concoction that tasted of cinnemon, and had no relationship to a real negroni. I found it undrinkable. The beers are all local, and your best choice. I did not try the wines, as they were from Pennsylvania, and I never found a local wine I could like. The food had some interesting characteristics. The stracciatelli soft cheese appetizer was fine, and the heated sweet roll accompanyment was a nice touch. The broccoli rabe was excellent and well charred, only the portion was half the size it should have been. And then came the pastas! The fresh pastas were excellent, with a firm bite and good texture. It was a great start, until the chef decided to get "creative" and try to best traditional sauces by creating inedible renditions of good dishes. The caccio y pepperoni (?) was so over cheesed with a very strong cheese, that it had no other flavor, and there was zero heat from the pepper. The tagliatelle with lamb ragu had excellent pasta, ruined by overcooked ragu and was swimming in too much oil and butter. The black squid pasta was beautiful tiny round black pasta with a few flakes of fish, but the flavor was repulsive. I had one bite and had to call it quits. The chef has an arrogance and a mistaken belief that he can produce a better dish than the Italians have been doing for 100 years, and in the process he produces inedible concoctions from his clearly limited understanding of pasta sauces. I cannot understand how the owners could let him have free range to produce his own inventions that contradict basic culinary combinations. Of the four people at our table, it was unanimous that none of us would return.
