The Sardine Factory Monterey Reviews from The Last Year
You know, I will always go to the Sardine Factory.
It has been my favorite place to go when we visit the Monterey/ Carmel area- However, The Food has seriously gone down in quality and the prices are way up- I get that you have to raise your prices - try matching that with good food! I could say, "We go for the atmosphere!" Jeezuz! What Happened To The Atrium??! Here we are in May and all you have are some suffering, Sad looking asylum!? Really? And we can clearly see the drains!? So, so, sad...The plant opposite us was dying and had broken limbs! At Least Take Care Of The Plants!! We will choose to dine elsewhere but will always come for Dave the Piano Man and his occasional friends! Mike Perry was there last week along with an amazing guitar player! The bar Rocks!! The restaurant- Damn Shame! But like I said, it's an institution and we will still go- just not to dine! First time in over 20 years I had to send my fish back! It was so dry! It might have been okay if it Actually had a Meunière sauce!! I could have choked it down! Wow! Sad but still not mad. Dave makes up for it!
We had an amazing dinner celebrating a birthday.
The food was amazing and the ambience even better. We enjoyed it lemon drops and two glasses of wine. We had a great experience and look forward to coming back again.

On May 17, 1980, we hosted our wedding dinner party inside the conservatory. On May 17, 2024 my husband and I returned to celebrate our 44th anniversary. We dined again inside the conservatory. The conservatory was full and very loud. Service was mixed and very slow. I ordered the sole and my husband ordered the sanddabs . Both excellent. We ordered the sardine appetizer. We didn't like it. It is an acquired taste. Although I wrote on my reservation that we were celebrating our 44th anniversary we received no acknowledgment or dessert. Overall it was a disappointing and underwhelming evening. We will not be celebrating any future anniversaries anytime soon.
What an amazing experience.
Everything was wonderful especially the Sommelier, Dave Sidener. We were closing the place down and he could've easily gone home but he took us on a tour of probably the most impressive wine cellar we've ever seen. Sardine Factory has a rockstar Somm that made our experience so memorable!
EST of a pretty average bunch
Having booked from afar whilst planning our trip our original choice was on the pier. One stroll past it decided it was not the place for us so started trawling the back streets and stumbled across the Sardine factory. From our welcome to the food service everything as at our place. The leathered of rooms made it difficult to decide where to sit, the first night was in the conservatory and as we liked. So much we returned to the Capitains room a few days later. Both the same food but very different atmosphere. The food was simple but good, my fish stew was the stand out dish
What an incredible night! My now fiancee chose the Sardine
What an incredible night! My now fiancee chose the Sardine Factory to propose because of the pictures of the beautiful solarium seating area. He ordered the steak and I had the lobster linguini. My pasta was PERFECTION and literally what I had been telling him I was craving for months. Just thinking about that dish right now has me salivating haha. While the ambiance and food was wonderful the service was even more notable! Our server and the manager on staff made my very nervous fiance at ease and helped him execute the most wonderful proposal with ice sculpture swans and all. We can't wait to come back as a married couple and enjoy the whole environment all over again. Thank you to the wonderful staff of The Sardine Factory!!
The lamb chops and pasta dishes were unmemorable especially
The lamb chops and pasta dishes were unmemorable especially at these prices----the service was one notch below average not just because of the personality of our server but bringing out a martini in the middle of a meal is really bad. But the glass-domed main dining room and chandelier are spectacular and makes up for the short comings we experienced. General Mgr. Ted is just a great guy who gave us an unforgettable tour of some restaurant areas most customers don't know about.
I tried this restaurant yesterday, ok the food was good but
I tried this restaurant yesterday, ok the food was good but it took them 1 hour and 38 minutes to get the order the prb is not just like that when we got the order we told the waiter that we been waiting for long he replied by ya I know ,
It was our date night lucky find! Well, shouldn't say lucky
It was our date night lucky find! Well, shouldn't say lucky find, cuz it is wide open with steller reviews on Yelp! We ended up finding a table in their glass dome. Service was really good and smooth, and food was amazing! And the girl i went on a date with is now my wife ;) We tried sardines, of course, and the salad. The creme brulee was yum! Definitely a must try place.
For the price you pay, the meal is not worth it.
I hadn't been in that restaurant for 35 years and I swear, they haven't changed a bit. No improvement in the decor. We sat in the atrium, and it felt cold and unspectacular. I wish we would have sat in the room that had the fireplace. We both were cold in the atrium. I had the cioppino and it was decent, but the sauce was way too tomatoey. Is that a word? Plus, they chopped the crab up and put it on a shell. Didn't like that at all. Disappointed. It was $70 bucks for that which was ridiculous. I've had way better cioppino elsewhere in Monterey and Pismo Beach for half the price. My wife had the prime rib and really enjoyed it. It was a thick cut. They did a great job on that. There was a guy on the piano and one singing. Old school but it sounded good. Service was on point. Absolutely not worth the price you pay. I won't go back. Tried to bring back some old time magic but it just didn't do it. Also, it was our anniversary and they sat us in a lousy spot. I noticed some folks have complained about the manager not touching bases with them. I noticed the manager had conversations with folks that he obviously knew. Locals and such. A good manager will check in with everyone. Just an observation because the folks next to us were locals that the manager and waiters paid hardcore attention to. He obviously didn't care about wasting his time on out of towners who might never come back.
Didn't think it was worth the hype.
I ordered the prime rib. My husband ordered the linguine and meatballs. We also got cheese bread and onion rings. The onion rings were probably the best thing we ordered.
Anniversary dinner
We had the greatest experience, dining at the Sardine Factory of Monterey on our 22nd anniversary. Our waitress Marissa was happy, professional and knowledgeable. We enjoyed beautifully lit ice swans which held delicious sorbet, before our main courses, which definitely added to our fantastic evening. We even got the surprise of seeing a long time wonderful friend Sunjeev, an award winning waiter, who's been there for near 46 years. The sommelier Dave is wonderful and certainly knowledgeable. We simply can't thank all of you enough. Much love, Bill and Sara
80s food with old world ambiance
So disappointing. I was excited for the cioppino special, but it was $70 for a thick marinara sauce dumped on well cooked seafood with the exception of fishy tasting Dungeness crab, mussels, and clams. My husband's prime rib was very good. Hence the 3 stars instead of 2. I would not recommend.
Top Choice
Wow, wow, wow. The staff and service were top notch. The food was some of the best we had ever had. The drinks as well were of great quality. They have a few seating options and they are all fabulous! My husband had a 40 year aged steak and it was the best we've ever had. Didn't even need the knife to cut it and my dab/beans were unbelievable.
Amazing
Had the best time. Drinks were great. Dinner was amazing. Service was outstanding. Can't wait to go back. Thank you.
An amazing dining experience!
A classic. Dined here over 36 years ago for a work event and returned this month for Thanksgiving dinner with family who recently moved to Pacific Grove. Magical ambience, wonderful staff/service and delicious food. Some had the traditional Thanksgiving dinner while others chose non-traditional options; plenty of choices for everyone.
Like eating amazing food in a spectacular dining room. Definitely a place for a celebratory meal.
Excellent setting for excellent food. The wine list was extensive and pricey so bring your bigger wallet. It is worth it though. The food was spectacular and the service was attentive but not too much. We really enjoyed our meal here and would recommend it for a special occasion.
Incredible Steak & Seafood - Exceptional service
Another dream come true place for ambience, food and music. We love eating at the bar and the great service you get via "Kris". Every dish of ravioli, Filet or Salmon was exceptional. Tender, juicy and done perfectly. A very First Class place.
Heartfelt Thank You .
Heartfelt thanks for the staff of the Sardine Factory for creating such memorable experiences. We dined in the conservatory for my 9/11 birthday dinner. Antonio delivered excellent , well timed service. We were so impressed, we revisited 2 days later for happy hour and oysters in the lounge . Julio, our server, was professional providing personalized service. I wished I’d learned the host / floor manager’s name that Wednesday night. He was exceptionally gracious. I’d shared that I really do have a 9/11 birthday and it is always a tough week and how I’d once been told by an acquaintance… “ You are not good enough to dine at the Sardine Factory”, but here I am second time this week.. Host/ Floor manager assured me. “ You will always be welcomed here. “ Those words brought tears to my eyes and I am truly so thankful to have been a guest. A restaurant is not just about excellent food, but also about the people and it’s staff. With much appreciation. …
