Perfect, refined dining. The service was impeccable--best I've seen outside of NYC. The food was also amazing. We can't wait to come back.
Be the first to ReplyIncredible fine dining- a must try
This incredible, high class restaurant is our all time favorite anywhere, regardless of the city or country. The building is a historic church and schoolhouse, with high beamed rafters, stained glass windows, indirect lighting, and massive beams. The tables are nestled in cozy corners with live candles, flowers and tablecloths. Chef Richard prepares amazing dishes like the melt -in-your-mouth scallop timbale and zucchini and mushroom salad. The food is presented as smaller plates and you can have them brought in any order. Our birthday dinner included salads, a fish dish and a meat dish each. The lamb chops were tender and delicious. Cyril’s cocktails are spot on: perfect and generous. Clayton’s service is top notch, assisted by experts who refill glasses, bring more butter and replace utensils. They know service. Kudos to this fine dining establishment, a rarity in today’s world. Please patronize it and keep this kind of place going for all of us. It’s the best.
Be the first to ReplyGood food, not so good service
Let me start by saying the food was delicious although my lamb was over cooked and all the dishes were very small portions. However the service was not up to what I would expect when spending this kind of money in a restaurant. We were celebrating my wife's birthday and were looking forward to a leisurely dinner. We felt very rushed from the start! The first thing out of our waiter's mouth was "do you know what you would like to order?" He (Joseph) asked us that at least 3 times before we had time to review the menu and decide on what we would like. We got the feeling that he could care less whether we dined there and that there were more important guests for him to attend to. Never did he offer to explain anything on the menu unless we asked. We ordered a cheese plate and he set it down and walked away. Not a word about what the different cheeses were! Needless to say this night did not turn out the way we had envisioned. They did put a candle in my wife's desert but as I kind of expected, it was not complimentary!
Be the first to ReplyThe best of Europe in Ohio!
We have eaten at Michelin Star restaurants in Europe and this French restaurant in Ohio, is one of favorite experiences EVER! Atmosphere, Food, Wine Pairing, and Service…all 5 Stars! Joseph was fantastic and made excellent recommendations and brought us extras from the Chef to experience. We have already booked another evening while we are in town.
Be the first to ReplyExceptional 45thAnniversary Dinner
My wife and I celebrated our 45th wedding anniversary at The Refectory last night. It is expensive, but every single aspect of the dinner was exceptional. We each ordered the CHEF’S FIVE COURSE TASTING MENU with the GRAND CRU WINE PAIRING. What an amazing dining experience! Taylor, their wine sommelier, did an exceptional job of describing each wine we tasted as well as the background on each winery. Each course was paired perfectly with the wine, and both enhanced the other. In fact, my wife tasted the 2019 Venissa Dorona di Venezia before we received our second course and said it wasn't to her liking. I persuaded her to wait until she had taken a couple of bites of the second course before making judgment. When she did so, she loved the pairing. Speaking of the second course, oh my, was it divine! The second course was Gambas and Dover Sole Tarte (leek fondue, basil crepe and carrot ginger velvet sauce). The sauce was amazing, and the shrimp and sole were cooked perfectly. I told my wife that a larger of portion of that would have been a complete meal for me! Yet we had more courses coming. The herb crusted filet mignon melted in your mouth, and the roasted Montrachet cheese was a perfect end of the savory part of the meal. Our dessert was Alsatian Goat Cheese and Georgia Peach Dome. It was so beautiful on the plate that we almost hated to eat it! Almost .... we loved eating every bit of it, and we really enjoyed the dessert wine, a Hungarian Aszú, to finish the evening. We were in a small area of about five tables, so the dining experience felt private. The service was top notch. It had been six months since our last dinner at The Refectory, and we were reminded that it is clearly the best dining experience in Columbus.
Be the first to ReplyExceptional, best chef and service in town.
We have visited The Refectoy for many years. It is our favorite restaurant in Columbus Ohio. This last visit was exceptional. Our server Alex knew our taste so well that I did not even look at the menu. He chose a 4-course menu with Gran Cru wine pairings and everything was outstanding. I couldn't have chosen any better. No other place for special occasions like this in Columbus, Ohio, and in my opinion a great value.
Be the first to ReplySpectacular
The Refectory was enthusiastically recommended to me, and it exceeded my expectations. Every bite was absolutely delicious, and the service was impeccable. We ordered three prelude dishes, two entrees, and two desserts. If you like escargot, order the marbled escargot. It’s PHENOMENAL. The duck was amazing. I don’t think I can enjoy duck anywhere else now that I’ve had it here. You can’t go wrong with your order. Just try a bunch of dishes and enjoy a meal where they won’t rush you.
Be the first to ReplyFantastic French Food and Excellent Service!
We had an amazing meal and excellent service at the Refectory. This was our second visit and we look forward to returning again soon. The staff made us feel welcome and special and the food was beautifully presented and delicious.
Be the first to ReplyNice evening
Excellent food and service. Extensive wine list. Escargot was probably best I ever had. Duck was perfectly prepared. Letting server pair wines with each course enriched the experience. Wines were selected that I would probably have skipped over. All staff was friendly and restaurant atmosphere is top notch.
Be the first to ReplyAs always, a wonderful dining experience!
We've been enjoying The Refectory experience for many years, and if anything, it's gotten even better. Now that we're older, we especially like the change to smaller main courses, and Taylor's wine pairings are always perfect. The service is attentive and friendly (Alex took care of us this time, but the entire staff is wonderful). We're already looking forward to our next dining experience at The Refectory!
Be the first to ReplyRefined but over-priced dining experience
The outside is unremarkable but there is plenty of parking. The interior is more impressive but sort of trying too hard, in a way. The bar room is warm and cozy and has the feel of a place where the bartender may know what you will enjoy drinking better than you do. All the cocktails we tried were exceptionally balanced, smooth and tasty. The food is good, especially the veg lasagna. The scallop dish lacks seasoning and has the smallest sea scallops I've ever been served. They charge extra for bread, which is delicious and the cheese course is a nice mix of flavors and textures. The service is prompt and the team is very knowledgeable. It is a nice choice for a special occasion but expect subtle flavors and light seasoning. Oddly, the best thing we had at my table was the pear tart which was delicate, tart and just a little sweet. If you are inclined to have cocktails and/or wine I would plan on spending about $150PP
Be the first to ReplyA Fine Meal
Came to celebrate college graduation. Found online by daughter who has a knack for finding good food and we were not disappointed! The restaurant has an old established feel and we were given a booth that felt private. There are more open seating areas that might be a bit noisier. This is not a place to come for large portions. We did not leave hungry or unpleasantly overstuffed. It seemed just right.
The presentation and flavors were excellent. Parking outside is open/self serve and not crowded. Coming nicely dressed added to the experience, but not required. We had a young couple next to us in a hoodie and t-shirts. Expensive but worthwhile. Compared to venues in other cities, I would say it is a bargain.
Magnifique!
Our dinner experience was, in a. word, magnificent. We visited on a Saturday evening for a very special graduation celebration for my nephew. We were greeted by a professional and knowledgable host and learned about the history of the building. We were seated in one of the most romantic and elegant dining settings I have ever seen. Unique and beautiful art displayed by local artist (she was in the house and stopped by to congratulate my nephew). Our server and sommelier were extremely knowledgeable and walked us through the dinner and pairings without being intimidating. Impeccable service with a sense of ease. They were engaged in our experience and did everything possible to make the evening special. The food is absolutely incredible. I chose the vegetarian menu and did not regret it. Some of the others in our party chose the chef's five course tasting. Every single dish was outstanding. The wine was out of this world. We all agreed that this was the most special dinner we have ever had in our lives! We have decided to plan an annual trip back to Columbus just so that we can visit this restaurant. It is worth it. Thanks so much to the entire team at The Refectory. You made our evening perfect in every way possible!
Be the first to ReplyAs always, a wonderful dining experience!
The Refectory has been our favorite restaurant for many years and, if anything, it just keeps getting better. The food, the wine, the service, the atmosphere--all outstanding. Alex took great care of us, and Taylor picked out the perfect wines to complement each dish we ordered. I'd give this restaurant 10 stars if I could!
Be the first to ReplyCulinary Excellence matched with Phenomenal Service!!!
Thank you for such a wonderful night and experience! The best restaurant experience I've had in Columbus! Felt like a meal I have enjoyed during my international travels at fine dining restaurants abroad, which was something I had missed since moving here to Ohio! Glad I finally found the Refectory!
Be the first to ReplyBetter Than Ever
First time to visit Refectory in over two years, and we had our best experience ever. Server was outstanding. Food was excellent. We could not ask for a better dining experience. We found the "small" plate approach to be refreshing and innovative for a fine dining restaurant.
Be the first to ReplyNickel and Dime
Been here many times over the years. Quality staff and food but the add ons are souring the experience. This is a high end restaurant, but really the extra (not hidden) charges are diminishing the fun. Extra charge for bread, extra charge for using a credit card, and extra charge for a cocktail gets old in a hurry. In this day and age who carries 2-3 hundred dollars to go out to dinner. What's next paid toilets?
Be the first to ReplyImpeccable Service & Food
As always, it was an amazing evening sharing our favorite place with friends. Joseph, Sommelier Taylor and staff made our experience even better than expected. Platinum service all around. The food and wine pairings were perfect too.
Be the first to ReplyExciting menu, perfectly executed
This is possibly the most interesting menu in Columbus. My favorite is the elk, They also offer Dover sole, my husband’s favorite. We dined at the bar and felt very safe. There are movable plexiglass partitions between parties, but you can lean back slightly to greet your neighbor if you wish. Our bartender was Misa, and she was great.
Be the first to ReplyFantastic Birthday Dinner
This was our first visit and Juan was amazing. I was a bit nervous trying new dishes but was pleasantly surprised. The food was delicious and the atmosphere is so warm and cozy. We will definitely be back!!
Be the first to ReplyVery Disappointing Experience
Ours was a large group of 28 people in a private room with 4 large tables for a birthday celebration. The positive first - the bread was fantastic! Unfortunately, that was as good as it got. After the salad, which was dressed with a strange maple syrup dressing, the servers gathered our salad plates, and took our knives. When the main course plates came, the servers began by taking one plate to one table, and the next to another table with the result that we all awkwardly sat either waiting for our plates, or waiting for the rest of the table to be served. But once all at our table had our main course plates, we still had no knives. So we continued to watch our food chill while a server went for knives. Finally I cut my filet mignon, which I had ordered well done. It was rare. I quietly asked the server to return it to the kitchen, explaining that it was ordered well done. Apparently the chef does not know how to cook steak to order, or his inflated ego will not allow him to accommodate his less gourmand patrons, because when it was returned, the meat was no more cooked than the first time around. The server never asked if my steak was acceptable the second time around. Why would he? He probably knew it hadn't been cooked any more. Inept serving staff and inept kitchen staff. If you don't happen to like raw meat, you might as well go elsewhere, and if you want tableware with your meal, you'll get better service at the local diner.
