The Progress San Francisco Reviews from The Last Year
Amazing.
Such a very special treat to come to this beautiful setting, to experience SO many fabulous interesting flavors, gorgeous design, and to be treated with care and friendliness, without feeling we have to be on our best behavior. Incredibly fresh vibrant ingredients, magical sauces, beautiful presentations. I've gotten to eat here about 4 times, and I always get so excited savoring the many flavors that I don't want to have conversations about anything else while I'm eating! There is a lot to love. The delight of all the textures-- it seems to be a signature to have some interesting flavorful crunch where you wouldn't expect it. Like the soft sweet ultra-fresh Zapallito squash with a so-delicate light tempura coating and lovely velvety orange flavored sauce -- it would just about be complete as is, but then it's contrasted with tiny cumin-spiced pistachio bits, and fresh little greens-- the perfect flavors to engage your whole being! So many details just right: fun background music with great sound system but never in the way of conversation; amazing wood furniture that invites stroking; beautiful natural light, lots of plants, good design everywhere. Yet unpretentious! Staff is attentive, friendly, and everyone seems real (so, you know, if they see me wanting to slurp up that last lick of sauce before they clear it, we can all enjoy that sentiment!) And to have the meals timed to our own eating pace (yes they unobtrusively keep an eye out to see when it's time to fire up your next course) all made for such special memorable meal experiences! Oh, and I didn't even get to swooning about those desserts! Just wow. They are not oversweet, but also full of captivating flavors. Like who would think of fresh thyme and buckwheat crepes with their dark chocolate ice cream?-- but the earthiness and fascinating zing pairs wonderfully, topped off with the most delectable dark cherries I've ever eaten. I wouldn't recommend passing up dessert, even if you don't think you need it. Mmmmmm. Thank you all who have made these special experiences possible!

Came here for an anniversary dinner and I can proudly say
Came here for an anniversary dinner and I can proudly say another Michelin star restaurant has been experienced. From the service to the food to the drinks, this is truly one of the best that sf has to offer. To start off, the one punch man was a knockout cocktail that was a rum and bourbon base with pandan that was slightly sweet and smooth. For dinner we tried the tierra vegetables masa dumplings, tomato and eggplant, turmeric grilled alaskan halibut, and bbq liberty farms half duck. Each dish was fresh, unique, and delicious and the star had to be the duck dish. I love duck and this was the best I've had it even down to the presentation and fried rice that was paired with it. The service here is fantastic and the style felt upscale and modern. Truly a fantastic experience.
Very nice dinner, but not necessarily where I was expecting.
The food was overall great, service was a bit uneven.. We waited a very long time between our second and third course while entree to dessert time was instantaneous. They add some random 6.5% charge which is very disappointing - wish they would include that in the menu prices instead. We got Potato caviar cloud - not as good as I expected, cloud was too soft, caviar got lost. And it felt like it needed a runny egg. Crudo- very delicious, great flavors, hard to screw up crudo any way but this was a good specimen. Progdog- gotta say this was the best hot dog I've ever had. It's very satisfying. Duck - was really expecting a great duck based on reviews and it was... Good. The rice was the highlight, so delicious and crispy parts were the best. Duck itself was okay - very mild flavour and I've definitely had lots of better duck breasts. The duck leg was actually really good though. I would not get it again if I came back. Semifreddo - wow!! Amazing dessert, such interesting combination. It had a jam at the bottom which I think actually took away from the dessert and made it a bit too sweet but really standout.

Excellent food and service! Their cocktail program is equally amazing. The menu is meant to be shared family style and you can't go wrong with anything here. Highly recommend trying the famous duck entree and the secret menu item: Prog dog (their take on a hot dog).

Delicious and creative food, very generous portions, great airy ambience, friendly service, amazing cocktail, what more can I ask for? I feel like the chef here is my food soulmate. Every dish had sth I loved, morel in the pasta, Cornish hen in schnitzel, shrimp remoulade, amazing duck and fried rice, runner beans in the salad, crunchy mix on the butter, etc, I am definitely coming back for more!

My wife and I felt like eating at a one Michelin starred
My wife and I felt like eating at a one Michelin starred restaurant. We were able to get reservations here the night before. Upon entering, the restaurant was very light, airy and clean. Noise level is on the higher side. The format here is family style. Service was excellent. Everything looked good on the menu. My wife cannot take any type of spicy heat. Tried to stay away from that. We ordered: josey baker whole grain bread 4/5: came with homemade butter topped with nuts. The bread tasted fresh but wished the whipped butter had a stronger butter flavor. riverdog farm pig head 4/5: this was a cured ham on top of fennel and lettuce with a citrusy sauce. This was very good, but a bit too spicy for my wife. burrata & crispy scarlet runner beans 5/5: this surprised me as I didn't expect the beans to be that crispy. This was served with some peaches on top. The flavor combinations put together was very good. Again, it was bit too spicy for my wife. hikari farms cucumber & strawberry salad 4/5: this tasted very fresh. I liked the cojita cheese on top. I didn't think would be spicy, but it was, so my wife could not eat too much of this either. bbq liberty farms half duck 5/5: this was the star of the night. Loved that each piece was charred on the top yet cooked perfectly so that it was not dry. My only request was that a half portion could be offered when only dining with two people. So good, but ended up taking some home. earl grey old fashioned donuts 3/5: this was a bit on the dry side, needing the ice cream that accompanied it. My wife liked it, but I would not order this again. buckwheat crêpes 3/5: these crepes were good accompanied by bittersweet chocolate ice cream and cherries. The combination was good, but would try another option next time. Overall, I enjoyed my experience at The Progress. I wished more of the dishes were not spicy, so that my wife could enjoy it more. The spice level was perfect for me though. So if you are the type who does not like spice, beware. Other than that, great experience.
I've been wanting to try this place for a while.
I've really like State Bird Provisions and have dined there many times before and after the pandemic. Upon entry? The space is very nice. Upscale, but not pretentious. We did have a later reservation (9pm) and I think that played into our service taking a dip at the end as it was the end of the service and people wanted to go home (we were still gone by 10:30 so we were not even close being last to leave as more than half of the tables were still filled). The service started well, our server was nice. We asked ordered the halibut crudo, the bread with apple cider butter, the cucumber and bbqwere suggested to get the smoked peas and wasabi, so we added that to our order. The server came back and said they were out of the lamb on the menu, but that they had a braised lamb substitute. I like braised lamb so we agreed to it. First came the bread and the crudo. Both were very nice. The apple cider butter was a really good accompaniment to the bread. So far so good. Then came the strawberry and cucumber salad. The level of spice was a surprise for my dining partner and myself. I like spicy and he didn't like it so much. Spice aside, the salad was interesting, but didn't fully work. We probably left about 25% of the salad on the serving plate. Then came the smoked peas. To me, one bite and it was inedible. Incredibly smoky, the balance of smoke from the roe and the peas to the rest of the dish was incredibly unbalanced and not worth eating. My partner got 2 bites in before giving up. 80% was left on the plate. So, here is what gets me. The server didn't ask how things were going. And when a diner eats almost none of a dish, that's really telling you something isn't right. I'm not gonna be a Karen and make them hear my complaints in real time, but it also isn't ideal in my opinion. We felt that our server wasn't invested in our dining experience. Then came the lamb. No exaggeration, there was about 4 bites of lamb for the whole plate . And one of my bites had a large piece of cartilage. Pretty disappointing for a dish of this price. They should have just 86'd the lamb entirely because this pivot wasn't working. We decided to forego dessert based on the service and food quality dipping so we paid our bill and called it a night. Really wanted to like this place, but that night they were not firing on all cylinders.
Food was really good.
Just felt like they rushed us out. We were only there an hour and a half
Half Duck, Full Experience!
I’m always a bit nervous to dine at a restaurant I have high expectations for — The Progress is one of those rare beauties that absolutely lives up to its reputation. From the service to the decor to the food, everything was exceptional. Our waitress was attentive but not overbearing, and the lighting was bright yet cozy — not particularly romantic, but certainly intimate. The menu rotates seasonally and offers a mix of fusion Californian fare. We started with the smoked sausage, which was flavorful with a bit of sweetness — it wasn’t overly porky and we liked that it was make entirely in-house. Our next dish was asparagus and lime tofu, which turned out to be surprisingly delicious, and would’ve been our favorite of the night if it hadn’t been for the duck. But wow, was that duck something else. The presentation was gorgeous, and it tasted even better than it looked. It was an extremely large portion, and we couldn’t finish it between the two of us (they were kind enough to pack us the leftovers, but the fatty duck wasn’t as good the next day. We’d recommend splitting the plate between three or four people and adding on a second, smaller entree to share). We closed the meal with the mochi donuts, which while good were nothing in comparison to the rest of the dinner. Dessert could be skipped in lieu of another of the creative appetizers or sides. Overall, The Progress will stand as one of the all-time best meals we’ve had in SF. It’s well worth the work securing a reservation and the accompanying price tag (which, notably, didn’t break the bank too much).
Our New Favorite SF Restaurant
After many years of not eating here we have had 2 meals in the past 3 weeks. The menu changes all the time, but remains inventive. We had 3 appetizers and a main, and liked the appetizers the best. We had the mulberry toast, with fromage blanc and wasabi, the peas and the halibut crop, all of which were outstanding. We shared the main, halibut, which also was great. Tom, the sommelier, usually has some ‘secret’ wines by the glass, so make sure you ask about them. Last night they had a great gruner veltliner for $15. Service was excellent. Bottom line: we will return again soon.
Simply amazing.
The duck alone was worth it but the service, ambience and overall vibe of this place made our anniversary dinner an absolutely stellar experience. Radicchio salad: 9/10 Caviar Potato Cloud: 8/10 Sausage: 9/10 Steamed black cod: 8/10 Half Duck: 10/10 Dessert - Semmifreddo: 9:10
A+ for service and food.
It was our first time here and our server gave us some recommendations on what their popular dishes are and the number of dishes we should order. We got the potato cloud, scallop crudo, seaweed noodles, and duck. Everything was delicious but the highlight was definitely the duck with fried rice and kimchi. It was more than enough food for two of us but I got to pack some home and eat it again the next day so no complaints. Overall, we had a great time and would love to visit again with a bigger group so we could try more dishes.

I had some spectacular cocktails and some dishes were super good. I was a little underwhelmed by the duck, though it was still tasty. Service was pretty good, we had a lot of servers, some were fantastic. It's a good vibe, a bit rowdy for the price in my opinion.
Our absolute favorite Michelin spot in the city! Previously
Our absolute favorite Michelin spot in the city! Previously recommended, this year, finally got their well deserved star! Everything is always delicious and cooked perfectly. Paired with an awesome cocktail menu, service, and wine list for days you can't go wrong here!
We had heard great things about this place and had a nice
We had heard great things about this place and had a nice night out, but unfortunately for the price can't really give this place more than 3.5. Less than half of the food was good (the fried cauliflower, artichoke toast and tofu), most of it was average (the cod, the lamb and broccoli). The ambience and presentation was super nice, which is probably why people like this place. Big space and not overly loud either, like some other dinky places. Drinks were unique and well made, like any other decent overpriced cocktail bar in the city though. Cool date spot I'd recommend for drinks and apps, skip the main course.
Came here for a birthday dinner a few weeks ago and
Came here for a birthday dinner a few weeks ago and thoroughly enjoyed the experience. Absolutely loved the open element of the restaurant and all the trees/plants gave the restaurant an island/outdoor vibe in a very pleasant way. Service was ok; I expected better from a Michelin restaurant. Our server was wonderful, as was the entire waitstaff, but unfortunately they seemed understaffed, so service often took a while (even things like getting the check/paying took about 15 minutes). There was also longer than ideal waits from when ordering food to it coming out and we waiting a good 30+ plus minutes for the main course. We ordered their bread and butter which was good; nothing super outstanding. The potato cloud was very interesting and delightful with wonderful textures and flavors. The brown butter seaweed noodles were really good - lovely flavor, perfectly cooked, and overall a very unique, wonderful dish. I was skeptical of this dish, and was very happy to find it so wonderful. I particularly enjoyed burrata & scarlet runner beans -- I was very hesitate with those flavors, but everything worked together wonderfully. Absolutely loved this dish. Now onto the main course: the duck. Sadly, we were very disappointed in this. The duck breast itself was cold and tough and lacked any interesting flavor. The fried rice it came with was also extremely bland. I forced myself to eat as much of it as I could as not to waste it. We were very excited for this dish, and it was truly disappointing. The three dishes we had were very fun, unique, and wonderful, so we would return to try other dishes on their menu. It's a great restaurant if you're looking for unique flavors and dishes.
Excellent spot near/in Japan town.
The food is solid and the vibe is warm and cozy. Great for dates or just hanging with friends. The staff is knowledgeable and attentive. If you have the time and a the need for some delicious food/drinks, do not hesitate to come here.
It was amazing to be back to the Progress.
The service is very professional and their food is great. The restaurant is not as busy as before, I remember we had to make reservations many days ahead of time before pandemic

Spent Valentines Day 2024 and a monthaversary at The Progress, after having been to State Bird a year ago. (Sister restaurants FTW! And they are not just sisters, but they are neighbors... literally) Made reservations a couple days in advance through Open Table and upon arriving, I was greeted and coat checked. Ambiance is classic, modern, relaxed vibes with tables, booths, and bar seating. Interior is dimly light, perfect for date night! We ordered: Hokkaido Scallop Crudo, Caviar Cloud, Artichoke Toast, Smoked Andouille Sausage, Dungeness Crab & Parsnip Anglotti, and the Chocolate Rye Cake. For drinks, One Punch Man. The Caviar cloud was a miss for me. While the play on texture with the cloud like potato and crunchy bits were fun, the caviar itself was a miss. Super tiny caviar that was saltier than normal for me. The Sausage dish was also a miss. Nothing fancy... taste like the hot dogs my mom puts in her Filipino Spaghetti. However, the Scallop, Artichoke Toast, and Dungeness crab dish made up for it. The cheese with the artichoke and black trumpet mushroom was a match made in heaven! The whole dish complimented itself incredibly well. And the toast was PERFECTLY toasted.... not too toasted where it's crunchy and scrapes the roof of your mouth each bite but just the perfect amount of crisp. The scallops were fresh and had tons of flavor. The dungeness crab with anglotti and truffle was CHEFS KISS!! The best pasta like dish I've ever had, and it beats out Flour + Water/Penny Roma pasta for me. Service was kind - made sure we were taken care of promptly and that we had water at all times. Happy to have had the chance to dine here!
The only Progress I made at The Progress was emptying those
The only Progress I made at The Progress was emptying those plates,,., My boyfriend and I visited The Progress on a Saturday night. The ambiance struck us as a cute date spot (We saw many couples at the bar and the tables as well). We were sat down in a cozy table under the staircase. The lighting was perfect: dim but enough light to see it all. We ordered 3 dishes to share among the 2 of us (mind that the Smoked Duck is a large shared plate). - Tierra Vegetables Masa Dumplings (3/5): Think of Costco tamales with fancy sauce... just not exactly what i had in mind... - charred arrowhead cabbage & crispy galangal tofu (5/5): Well-delivered salad - Smoked Duck (5/5): the CROWN JEWEL! I would return again and again for this dish! The service was fantastic! The servers took the extra step to make our night special as we were there to celebrate a special occasion. Overall, I would return... for the Smoked Duck and the Service...
Underwhelming
I made reservations based upon the NYT “Top 25 Restaurants in San Francisco”. Was difficult to get reservations. Got reservations on A Monday at 5:30 pm. Arrived early…does not open until 5:30! Asked for a quiet table for my wife’s birthday. Got a 2top along the banquet. The restaurant was filled by 5:35! Our server was pressing to give our entire order immediately on the philosophy the food is served family style. Wanted to have cocktails first…so I told the server not to order and bring the food while we were having cocktails. Needless to say the salads were delivered after a few minutes of receiving the cocktails. The server who delivered the salads stated that she did not know we wanted to wait. This is a major problem with this and many other restaurants in the USA. We ordered the winter citrus salad and the roasted cauliflower salad (which was largely broccoli). Both had similar sauces and masked the underlying flavor of the vegetables/fruit. The main course was the bone-in pork chop. The Bone was separated from the meat and was overcooked and dry. The sauce was cloying and overpowered the meat itself. Was very disappointing. The other dish was pasta with crab. Mostly pasta with only a hint of crab. Taste was OK but not great. Wine list and cocktails OK. Service was harried and deemed mediocre. Overall for the price of the food it was clearly substandard. Expect to pay a lot for mediocrity. As another reviewer said this is no “progress”. Hard to want to return for a second chance.
An epicurean delight
This restaurant was a great experience from the minute we walked in. The service impeccable, the ambiance fun, and the starters and main courses phenomenal. Hubby’s black cod dish was probably the best seafood dish we’ve ever eaten and daughter’s lamb was scrumptious. Desserts were hit and miss but ice cream cake was delicious. You will be amazed as to how flavorful the dishes are!
Great food, poor wine service for a Michelin starred restaurant
Great food, great wine list. The duck was stupendous. Wine service for a Michelin restaurant was disappointing to say the least. Should be no excuse in a place like this. Took the shine off what could have been a memorable evening
Fantastic
We tried many dishes, all mom which stood out for the delicate taste, creativity of preparation and presentation. The duck was exquisite. Also, excellent wine list.

Great Service - amazing dinner!!
Read about the site in NYT and bought a reservation at Mother Wolf in LA 2 days later. Worked great and the food was amazing!!!
Worked perfectly!
Got the reservation (that I couldn't get anywhere else) and was able to entertain a group of friends at the infamous Bern's Steakhouse.
Got into Nobu Malibu
Wonderful! My parents are visiting and we have wanted to go to Nobu Malibu for years. I tried getting a reservation myself but it was next to impossible. So glad I was able to buy a reservation on appointment trader for a decent price!
Very easy
Was very hesitant going into this experience but am glad to say that it worked out very well ! will definitely use appointment trader in the future
Fabulous Lunch
I was veeeeeerry skeptical that this would work, particularly at a restaurant as hard to get into as Nobu Malibu, and it was perfect! We had lunch outside on the patio and it was fabulous!
Great reviewer team
Just wanted to take a second to shout out the reviewer team. Even though they probably review hundreds of listings and bids a day, they still take the time to leave great comments and respond relatively quickly. Thanks!
Incredible
I got a reservation to Don Angie, which I've been trying to book for weeks! I am very happy with this service.
Best platform out there!
Super simple, easy, and fast to secure reservations for hard-to-get restaurants and locations!

Worked well, got me into a restaurant with no availability
I was skeptical, and I still don't really know how they managed to find this hard-to-find reservation, but it was a win-win from my point of view, and I'll use this service again.
Last minute reservation for Delilah Las Vegas
Got a last minute reservation, dinner for 2 at Delilah Las Vegas: super impressed! The process was simple, transaction seamless. We had an amazing time! Couldn’t be happier! 😍
It works!
Ok at this point I've attended a reservation purchased on AT by a friend and sold a reservation personally. Both worked pretty smoothly, nothing sketchy about it. A few areas for improvement including a way to more directly communicate between buyers and sellers, but the app always seems to be in development. AT customer support is really(!) responsive and helpful too if you have questions!
Money transfer
As a seller, I like the fact i have the ability now to transfer money out of my AT account and into a bank account. Makes getting the money much easier then the process before.
Love this app
Got to go to places otherwise unreachable
Easy Access
Very easy to get into one of the hardest restaurants to reserve in New York.
Whose name will my reservation be under when I arrive at the venue?
It can be under your name or a name you choose! Some reservation offers already include the AppointmentTrader Transfer Service which will transfer the reservation in to your name. If its not included you can add it on after buying the reservation for a small fee. One thing on that though: As many reservations become available at last minute, taking a reservation in someone else name is quick and great for privacy. Most reservations on AT are listed with a virtual phone number, so all you need to do is present the phone number at the hostess stand and you are good to go!
Payouts Blocked Because of Sell Through Rate
Does anyone know how AT plans to handle cases where a seller is quitting the platform but has a sell through rate <25%? The error message I got said to fill more bids or find other ways to increase the rate.
Is AT really going to block sellers from withdrawing their money? Especially revenue made before the sell through rate was introduced??

Transferring reservations is not supported in AT. Why not just use the name in the AT screenshot?
Buyers interested in Bern's Steakhouse: PLEASE READ
Same goes for 4 Charles and I Sodi
Prepaid Reservation Fee
Agreed. Ultimately not addressing this month after month is clearly resulting in a drop in certain venue’s rankings & sales.

Need to cancel a bid, not getting a response… how do I do it?
Click on "Take off the Market Option" in your portfolio
Working on your bid?
Your bid has been “matched” with a reservation. From the time a reservation has been located, the seller of the reservation must connect with moderator to give transfer information for reservation. If the seller;however, does NOT respond to reservation transfer, then your bid is reprocessed and returns to the first step, which is connecting your request to a reservation.
Process after bid is accepted.
Hey @EvocativeFold67, welcome to appointmenttrader! Once the reservation is in your portfolio, you definitely own the timeslot, the review team would not have approved the trade if the reservation wasn't confirmed - so you are going :-) Judging from your post you bid today and are going tomorrow - don't worry as long as you initiated the name transfer, you are good - the transfer service has to work with the opening hours of the reservation team of the respective venue. You will likely see the transfer confirmation a couple hours before your reservation time.
Where do the Reservations on AppointmentTrader come from?
Mostly from people who don't need their reservations or appointments any longer. AT has no relationship with places listed and acts as a platform connecting buyers and sellers making sure that listed reservations are real and that privacy is not compromised when transacting.
What happens if my bid expires unanswered?
Hey @FluffyStar64, thanks for the question! When you place your bid the amount gets transferred in a deposit account, the second you either cancel your bid or a few minutes after the bid expires the funds are moved back into your main account from where you can refund it to your payment method or use for other transactions.
