The Original Pancake House Portland Reviews from The Last Year
Food: No, it's not good and in fact it's garbage.
They have figured out a way to cheapen even the already lowest form of gluten and the stuff is tasteless and just plain old awful. Service: The wait staff we had were great. Friendly, helpful and attentive. Ambiance: OMG! I am dead serious when I say that this place is easily the loudest, noisiest, most horrific of all restaurants in the entire USA. So loud I could not hear my partner speaking to me across the table - a small table for 2! Absolutely could not hear anything except everyone! Kids, old men, and a wide variety of the clueless. So, a nice wait staff, serving bad food in a facility loud enough to cause deafness.
If you're looking to buy a meal that will feed you for 3
If you're looking to buy a meal that will feed you for 3 days, this place is for you. For me, the portions are so off-putting that it kinda grossed me out. But... the biggest issue for me is that their food quality is not good. This is a pancake house and their 'maple' syrup is thick, gooey, over-sweet, maple flavored corn syrup. That was a massive disappointment. One time I got the corned beef hash omelette and it was literally mush straight from a can (as in not fried up first) that made that whipped egg shake like Jello on my plate. It was the kind of canned hash my dad used to call "dog food" and bring on camping trips when I was a kid because it was "easy fixin's". And then they stuffed it with about a pound of cheese. I couldn't even eat it. It's crazy to me how many people rave about this place. To me it's glorified trailer park food.
Classic pancakes not to be believed.
Worth every minute of the wait. Love the decor & friendliness of employees.
The food was very good.
Food was very fresh. Out of the oven The service was really nice.
The food and service were wonderful! We ended going back
The food and service were wonderful! We ended going back twice it was so good. We had the fresh fruit crepe, french crepes , and an omelet. For our first visit, we went early before the rush and it was much more relaxing. The second time it was busy so it was really loud and crowded, and didn't make as good of an experience as the first time. They had a communal table so people could choose to sit at to eat with others, which I thought was a great idea.
Very good food, and very nice staff but always wayyyy to
Very good food, and very nice staff but always wayyyy to busy and crammed they really need to make this place bigger, i don't care if it's supposed to give off "old diner" vibes I don't want the waitresses booty to be all up in my face every time the table next to me is ordering. Not to mention the chairs and booths are so close up I can literally hear the people next to me's hearts beating
Pancakes were doughy, undercooked, Eggs seemed to be cooked
Pancakes were doughy, undercooked, Eggs seemed to be cooked in that fake oil that tastes like butter, coffee was bitter, gross. On previous visits I tried French Toast which was basically flavorless aside from slightly burned egg. Syrup was completely unremarkable. Restaurant was noisy and surprisingly not as busy as I remembered. They've definitely lost a few steps over the years.
One of the greatest American restaurants! Try their potato
One of the greatest American restaurants! Try their potato pancakes. Also the Dutch Baby or the Apple Pancake. Everything in the menus is done well and with the very best ingredients! I just wish that all the franchisees were held to the same standards as the true Original Pancake House in Portland!
A large and varied menu of breakfast items, I had potato
A large and varied menu of breakfast items, I had potato pancakes which have been a favorite all my life and these were done to perfection with lacy, crispy edges and applesauce along side. Daughter had Dutch Baby which was beautiful to look at and delicious she said. Hubs had waffles with eggs and he took part of it home for later as did I with my pancakes. Service was friendly and as rapid as one would expect on a crowded Sunday morning. The ambience was enjoyable- the place was crowded but there were booths and enough soft surfaces that conversation was completely possible. We went at 9:00 so there was a bit of a wait but with a large anteroom and lots of benches the wait was fine.
Love coming here, the food is consistently great! All
Love coming here, the food is consistently great! All pancake and omelet options are huge and worth the price. Service has never been bad! There is a cute old charm to the dining room, and sizable parking lot in the back. Most of the menu is decently priced, a few stray items are steep (a side of 1 egg is $4.50) but it's pretty even. Main place for improvement is the wait system, you have to be there when you are called and they don't text.
Only one thing comes to mind.
.. the glutton from Monty Python. Portions are out of line and their omlettes are revolting. I left so grossed out that I will never eat here again.
Walked in no wait, 10:30am on a Saturday.
I was immediately greeted with a big smile by a young broad who was wiping down menus with a wet rag. What a sight! Nothing grinds my gears more than being handed a sticky disgusting menu. Table was clean and inviting. Service was outstanding. Fresh squeezed grapefruit juice is to die for.. Whips are all house made as well. I tried to finish my coffee four times, but the server wouldn't let me see the bottom! I had four coffee top offs before the food even arrived. Excellent job guys. I will be back.
A small, cozy, quaint restaurant.
It is cute with traditional decor and many windows letting in sunshine. Expect a wait and there are good reasons for the wait. There is a small parking lot, but be prepared to park on the busy big street due the high number of guests. Great service!
The perfect balance of sweet and savory
"Fresh" and "delicious" are the first words that come to mind. In addition to regular visits, my daughter and I make an annual pilgrimage during peach season to order the peach and blackberry crepes. Although a single order would be plenty to fill our tummies, we wouldn't think of sharing. I don't know where they source their fruit, but it's always the best, and it helps that they focus on in-season fruit when possible. And the fresh whipped cream is to die for--just the right hint of sweetness to complement the crepes. If you fall on the "meat eater" spectrum, don't despair. My husband loves their links, accompanied by nice crisp-on-the-outside-soft-on-the-inside hashbrowns and cooked to order eggs. The wait can be pretty knarly on the weekends, so be prepared, or stop by during the week and avoid the long delay.
This is the best breakfast joint in Oregon/Pacific
This is the best breakfast joint in Oregon/Pacific Northwest. It's addicting and so delicious, been going here since I was a kid and it's still a place I come crawling back to. If you are lost in the menu get the DUTCH BABY, it is the perfect mix of sweet and savory with the whipped butter! 10/10 recommend. WARNING - this is a small space and lines for seating should be expected, don't be scared of a wait, good food takes time.
The OG original pancake house is a must try for everyone in
The OG original pancake house is a must try for everyone in the Portland area. They are a great option for a hearty filling breakfast/brunch. We arrived at 11 on a Saturday and had a 30 min wait as it was so busy! Once seated, service was quick and water refills kept going. Food did take a bit of time to come but was absolutely worth it. The portions are huge and the prices are reasonable. Their omelettes are packed with flavor and filling while their pancakes are incredibly soft and tasty. Overall, highly recommend this place to anyone!
Always such a great time at OPH! The food is always yummy
Always such a great time at OPH! The food is always yummy and the staff is always so nice! The wait can get very long on the weekends so I would plan ahead. I always make sure to order the hash browns when I'm here because they are so good!! The portions are large and I always have leftovers. And of course, their pancakes are always perfection!

Everything about this place emulates tradition at its finest. The food is served in classic style and in generous portions. The coffee is hot and flows continuously. The atmosphere takes a page out of every memory you have of breakfast diners growing up yet adds an elegant twist. The silverware is even true silver! And the servers couldn't be more helpful and kind. Love this place. No wonder there are so many regulars who know each other by name!
Expensive mediocre food and poor service.
I had an unsatisfactory experience at THE ORIGINAL PANCAKE HOUSE in Portland (124 street location). Ordered the corned beef hash and an Irish omelette. Totally disappointed. Let's start with the corned beef hash. Runny mush with no flavor. Clearly not homemade, or if it was, it was run through a blender! It must be made with mashed potatoes to be so soft. Not even fried or browned. I have had more flavorful, nicely textured corned beef from a can and some amazing corned beef hash from other local restaurants! The Irish omelette was another disaster. Layered with the same corned beef mush and mashed potatoes (menu just says potatoes but a reasonable person would assume diced), it was 2 inches of bland, zero taste, soft tofu textured disappointment. Sure it was big (about 7 inches across) but the thing actually jiggled on the plate. My guess is too much cream or way undercooked eggs. Needless to say, I could not force down even a quarter of it before pushing it aside and just eating the pancakes that came with it. The buttermilk pancakes were laughable. For a place with "pancake" in their name, they should be able to make good ones! Maybe the other specialty pancakes are better but these were undercooked and thin. Really, really thin. The sugar free syrup had a very odd taste so we used the table syrup. A little bit on the pancakes and the pancakes just fell apart. you couldn't even get them to stay on a fork. Four dollars for a cup of coffee is robbery. Asked for cream three times to two different servers and it was never brought. Place was about 2/3 full but I had to get up and get my own coffee refill since the only times the server came by were to bring the food and the bill. So, a horrible, expensive breakfast ($45 for two). We will never return.

Ask a Question |
Whose name will my reservation be under when I arrive at the venue? |
It can be under your name or a name you choose! Some reservation offers already include the AppointmentTrader Transfer Service which will transfer the reservation in to your name. If its not included you can add it on after buying the reservation for a small fee. One thing on that though: As many reservations become available at last minute, taking a reservation in someone else name is quick and great for privacy. Most reservations on AT are listed with a virtual phone number, so all you need to do is present the phone number at the hostess stand and you are good to go!
