I've been here twice.
Exemplary experience. I learned about the history of sushi and Japan (not in a lecture way). Service is perfect, every dish is made to perfection. And the guided experience of your arrival and the ambiance of the interior is truly unique and a story I tell over and over. A great place for an anniversary or a really special occasion above and beyond.

Super gimmicky "speakeasy" setup and great social media marketing does not equal good food. If you want to impress someone who's never had fresh fish in an omakase setting then yes go to this place. The fish is straight out of some freezer from a fish market in Flushing and they add a bunch of gimmicky ingredients like soggy black truffle shavings to mask the not so fresh taste of the actual fish. Service was super hurried and they did not really care to explain what you're eating. Skip and go to Noz Market or Nakazawa for way fresher food and real omakase.

Moto's Office is really great- such a cool omakase speakeasy! Highly recommend getting the full experience with the sake pairing- it really brought out all the fish flavors! The chef was definitely a master and knew what he was doing! Some pieces were better than others (some were very fishy!) and it was a little hard to hear the explanation of each course. But overall good omakase experience for a special occasion.
Be the first to ReplyMy partner took me here for my birthday and we loved it.
To get in, you must ring the door using an old telephone and say the password. Within, there are items from Mr Moto's travels throughout. Downstairs there is a pre or post lounge as well. All the sushi was amazing. My only complaint is that I was too full! Not a bad thing at all. The saki pairings were also lovely and generous. I liked how they switched our cup out each time and we occasionally got to select the cup we wanted. The food, service, and atmosphere was all top notch.

Outstanding omakase experience for someone coming just for the food and in a hurry. We were seated promptly and opted to skip drinks, so the food service began pretty much immediately. All of the dishes were excellent, and I mean, EXCELLENT. I don't want to get too much into the description since th menu is always changing, so please scroll through the photos. I will note that Mr Moto is not for everyone. Reading one 2-star review jolted my memory that we had very little interaction with the chefs and staff. There was an overall lack of 'community' in that sense - food was prepared and served, and we were "rushed" out by being invited to have drinks downstairs in a place that can only seat around 6 people. Others came after us and left because there were no seats. I definitely think this matters as we've enjoyed a number of great omakase restaurants around NYC, Japan, and other places where the chefs interact with you too.
Be the first to ReplyThis is one of the omakase that's very hard to reserve.
Limited 8 counter and 3 table seating speakeasy makes getting reservation really tough. Reservation open first day of the month for the whole month. Usually seats are gone within minus. $100pp deposit required upon booking. Standing out from other omakase is the experience you received. It's a speakeasy, you received a letter once reservation is confirmed; you will then decode the letter to find the code to get in the restaurant by calling the phone at the door. There's no name or any sign just a door and a phone in the box out front. Inside is small but cozy, with a lot of artifacts from Mr Motto's time. Letters and pictures all over the wall. It's more like a museum. Ground floor is dining and downstairs is a speakeasy bar you can enjoy drinks after the meal. The price is definitely high but the fish are super fresh. The most impressive is the scallops, they are still alive in the shelf when served, the chef cut them out, clean them and serve them right in front of us. All the fish are super fresh no fancy toppings just the pure fresh fish taste. Nothing stood out on each piece but overall enjoyable.

Mr. Moto and his office welcomed us with open arms, treating us to an unparalleled sushi experience as we celebrated our 20 years together. The chef's artistry in blending various sushi flavors left us speechless. Amidst the delightful culinary journey, we found solace in the calm and impeccably clean ambiance of the establishment. The serene atmosphere enhanced our dining experience, perfectly complementing the exceptional food and warm hospitality of the staff. We feel incredibly grateful to have celebrated such a milestone in the presence of such culinary mastery and tranquility.
Be the first to ReplyThe only notable thing of Mr.
Moto...is his Mr. Toto. No difference from the ambience of the bathroom to the actual dinner setting. Whoever did their marketing/PR deserves a raise because we were conned into believing that the area was larger than it was. Save yourself the $600 (yes $600, don't let the prepaid reservation fool you, it's "applied" but it really isn't) and go to an all you can eat sushi or a place near the ocean that has fresh food. Theirs was drenched in wasabi and soy sauce, and had grades of sushi that are easily available at a fish mart in flushing. Left hungry. Here's all the photos of the food, ambience, and postcard (if they truly do mail it).

Might be hard to get reservations but if you can't, don't worry, you're not missing out that much. While it's delicious and awesome, you can get the same type of dishes at other top sushi places where you don't need to stalk the reservations. Slight gimmicks here but food is crafty and worth it.

Best experience of NYC since moving here?Hands down has to be The Office of Mr. Moto... You start with a simple cipher and enter into an exciting voyage through history and more importantly, nigiri. Been open less than two months and already super difficult to get reservations and it's easy to see why. Definitely recommend sitting at the bar as you get to interact with the humble and joyous and incredibly skilled Chef Toshio who's been working at his craft for 50+ years! With the progression of the omakase, we were exposed to more and more rare fish that I'd never even heard of with seasoning ranging from white soy sauce (based in dashi), to bamboo charcoal salt and of course yuzu. The fish are flown daily from Toyosu Market in Japan so you know everything is fresh. And the staff are so kind and friendly; we are sake novices but wanted something light and dry. Got recommended the Mirror of Truth which is seasonally available in the winter; was so good we got three bottles! After the meal, we took a gander down the steps behind us... amazed by the historical artifacts, which to be fair I have no idea if they're real, but definitely look the part! Downstairs is a small lounge with an automatic piano playing jazz music where you can continue to enjoy some libations and hang out. Maybe take a look closer than I did because Mr. Moto has more puzzles that come your way after the meal and my head is aching from trying to figure out the clues! Definitely highly recommend... definitely coming back!!

Came here after seeing on social media how you get a secret passcode to enter. Made reservations a few weeks back, so my fiancé and I, and our friend came for the 21 course tasting. Loved everything about this place! From the decor, the little story behind it, the servers were absolutely great (knowledgeable, friendly and funny!), and of course the food! All of the fish we had was super fresh, with some even being flown in that morning and prepared for the evening we were there. What I loved compared to other Omakase we've been to, is they use very little rice with the fish. They really highlight the taste of the fish as well as how they prepare it. Instead of feeling bloated and super full halfway through the tasting, by the end of the 21 courses, we felt very satisfied without feeling super full. Again, this was easily the freshest fish I've ever had at an Omakase or sushi in general. Don't want to give too much away, since the story behind Mr. Moto and the way this restaurant does everything, is a very cool experience. But I do want to commend the servers, they were very knowledgeable about all the fish we were served, and were very personable and funny. Would definitely come here again!

On Friday night, we had the pleasure of experiencing the unique speakeasy vibe of The Office of Mr Moto, a Japanese omakase restaurant. Securing a reservation for this highly sought-after establishment required quick reflexes - I managed to snag two counter seats as soon as bookings opened at midnight on the first day of the previous month. Nestled in the East Village of New York City, access to the restaurant required a code obtained via email. As we stepped inside, we were immediately enveloped in a cozy yet well-lit atmosphere. The intimate setting featured only six seats at the counter top, where we were treated to a gastronomic journey. Our meal began with a selection of appetizers and chawamushi, followed by a stunning lineup of 16 pieces of nigiri that paid homage to the time-honored traditions of edomae sushi while offering a modern twist. Each piece showcased the exceptional quality of fish sourced directly from the renowned Toyosu Fish Market in Japan. The sushi was flawlessly prepared and impeccably fresh, leaving us thoroughly impressed. The meal concluded with a hand roll, soup, and a delectable dessert. The sushi counter boasted a lively and engaging atmosphere that never strayed into the realm of pretentiousness. Following our meal, we were invited downstairs to the library, where we were immersed in an impressive collection of jazz music. The ambiance was cozy and welcoming, allowing us to unwind while sipping on wines and engaging in enjoyable conversations with other guests. The team's hospitality was exceptional, making for a night that we will not soon forget.

The concept is interesting- sushi speakeasy! The theme is that Mr. Moto traveled aboard the USS Susquehanna w/ Commodore Perry who with his Black Fleet forced Japan to open up for international trade (thank you to the Japanese school I went to as a kid for this knowledge.)Enter the secret code to enter- you'll be led into the dining room, split into 3 tables and 8 counter seats. If you are seated at the tables like I was, tough luck- you'll have no interaction with the sushi chef (but the servers will give a brief explanation of the fish and the toppings). The meal started off with 3 appetizers (including nimono simmered vegetables, and grilled salmon.) Followed by a fantastic chawanmushi (topped with uni and ikura, the richness of the toppings complemented the simple dashi flavor of the egg) and a choice of pressed sushi (salmon, anago or mackerel- I chose mackerel). The pressed sushi was okay, but I will say that the mackerel had just the right level of fat to it.High points- the zukemaguro with yuzu kosho was delightful, as was the seared kamasu. Also, the two pieces of anago (one salt flavor, the other tare) were superbly fluffy. Hotate was also fantastic. However, some nigiri missed the mark, especially the white fish- the nodoguro was flavorless (in the winter, the fat in the fish should be more defined...) and the sea bream (topped with konbu) felt strangely rubbery. Courses ended with osuimono (soup) and dessert of matcha sorbet and fruit.Perhaps due to the fact that I was seated at a table that was separated from the counter, I felt the pacing was a little slow for an omakase.Curious to see if anything could be done about that, but just a thought. The place is brand spanking new so maybe they are settling in still- would be excited to see how they are in a year or so.

We had the best time! Of all the omakase spots, this had just enough to differentiate itself without losing the centrality of just really good food. The space is small and cozy, but laid out so no one feels cramped and with comfortable seating. Interesting details are all over, providing fun stories and information and all looking beautiful. The service was impeccable and everyone was so kind, we loved getting details about what each course was and they were attentive to every need/want. The pace of the night was lovely, we never felt rushed and we were still sad when it was over. Best of all was the food, every course was delicious, very fresh and seasonal and expertly seasoned. There were many things I hadn't had before, and it was all really great. I liked that sitting at the tables permits you an extra course- really makes it so there is no wrong answer between table and bar. Truly a 10/10 experience, great for a fun date or night out with friends.

With the vast quantity of omakase options now in the city, it is hard for any individual spot to stand out. That is not true of The Office of Mr. Moto, a well-decorated yet cozy sushi lounge from the people who brought you Tomokase and Tabetomo.I enjoyed dinner at the sushi bar where we experienced a 21-course (!) tasting as well as a sake pairing which was very well thought out and generous in libations. The fish was well seasoned, with a special shout out to the excellent rice and the volume of wasabi (I asked for a little less). I also appreciated that the meal started with oshizushi (pressed sushi), which is not often seen in New York. While chef Matsuoka is not fluent in English, he was plenty charming as he handed over each piece as was the remainder of the staff. If you are looking for something different when it comes to omakase, come hungry and make an appointment here for your next meal.

Such a fresh and unique take on an omakase experience - fantastic from start to finish! Every detail is so delicately curated and you're instantly transported into the immersive world of Mr. Moto. The menu was absolutely delightful, full of variety and had things I don't typically see in other omakase tastings - and SO MUCH FOOD. Chefs and staff were also wonderful, and even though there was another seating after us, we were able to linger a little longer after our meal at the moody downstairs lounge. A must try!
Be the first to ReplyI was super excited to try this omakase after seeing that
I was super excited to try this omakase after seeing that it just newly opened and how interesting the whole concept was. We fortunately deciphered the code and was able to get in and was greeted immediately and brought to the sushi counter where our seats were. The space is small but clean and has beautiful decor. The starting appetizers were delicious and I especially loved the daikon but found the texture of the cod milkfish to be an acquired taste as it was too slimy for me. The chawanmushi was stellar and had a bite of uni in it. What a great start to the meal. You also start with your choice of a pressed sushi and I chose the sea eel. It was OK, was not a fan of how dense the piece was.In total there were 21 courses and overall the sushi pieces were very solid. There were a number of pieces that I really enjoyed including the shard, golden eye snapper, horse mackerel, uni, barracuda, cherry salmon and toro hand roll to name a few. There were quite a few fish that I had never had before or had rarely seen at most omakase in NYC and was glad to try it. They are also yuzu forward which I appreciated as I find that it brings out the sweetness of the fish. They don't use too many sauces and rather use salts which I liked as sometimes the soy sauce can cover the flavors of the fish. To end the meal we had a delicious miso soup and a dessert with fruit and green tea ice cream with adzuki beans that was delicious. Service seemed a bit chaotic at times with the wait staff running back and forth to the counter but I didn't mind it as they were engaging and very friendly and answered any questions I had. For the price point, this was a great value and everything was so fresh. I will definitely be back!
Be the first to ReplyI recently had the pleasure of dining at the Office of Mr.
Moto and I must say, it was a truly unique and unforgettable experience. This speakeasy-style restaurant is not just a dining establishment, but a puzzle that you need to solve in order to get in. The excitement of figuring out the entrance only added to the overall ambiance and experience of the restaurant.Once inside, I was greeted with a chic and stylish atmosphere that immediately set the tone for a memorable night. The attention to detail in both the decor and the menu was truly impressive. The food was hands down some of the best I've ever had. Each dish was expertly crafted and bursting with flavor. The ingredients were fresh, and the combination of textures and tastes was nothing short of incredible. I particularly enjoyed the sushi rolls, which were beautifully presented and delicious. The drinks menu was also noteworthy, offering an extensive selection of premium sake and unique cocktails. I appreciated the knowledgeable and attentive staff who were able to recommend pairings that perfectly complemented my meal.Overall, I would highly recommend the Office of Mr. Moto to anyone looking for an exceptional dining experience with a twist. From the unforgettable entrance to the outstanding cuisine, this restaurant truly deserves a five-star rating. I cannot wait to return and indulge in their delicious offerings once again.
