The Obstinate Daughter Sullivan's Island Reviews
Where do I start.
.. This place was highly recommended by some friends we made while in NYC, so we made the trip out the Sullivans Island for lunch (dinner reso's are tough). First off, our salad had a piece of glass, or broken plastic. Secondly, they prepared the wrong entree. The restaurant was changing over to their mid-day/pizza menu, in preparation for dinner, so the service felt a little inattentive. The food was solid, but not good enough to recover for our overall experience. Last note- the music was a very odd choice for the setting
great ambiance and service, worth the wait, got the vodka
great ambiance and service, worth the wait, got the vodka pasta and old danger pizza, delicious. starter was the brussels sprouts and super good with the farro
Amazing food.
Best Brussels sprouts appetizer. Soup was delicious. Main courses were so good. Great service. Somehow we made room for their gelato below the restaurant and an obstinate daughter sweatshirt for my obstinate daughter! lol
The food here was amazing.
We had grilled shishito peppers, the peach pizza and the ricotta gnocchi. The gnocchi is the best we have ever had. The sauce was similar to a ragΓΊ and was packed full of flavor.
Absolutely amazing every time.
We tried a seasonal watermelon crudo with a spicy aioli and it was to die for! The radiatore with whipped ricotta is everything I could hope for in a pasta dish.
My fiance was not thrilled when I picked an Italian
My fiance was not thrilled when I picked an Italian restaurant to visit on our Charleston trip. By the end of our meal he was glad we came and said this was one of his favorite stops. He was very pleasantly surprised! The pizza and pasta were both incredible. They make their pasta and pizza dough in house and you can truly taste the difference. The ricotta and chives on top of the pasta was the perfect touch. The pizza was amazing. I understand why reservations here fill up so quickly! I would 100% revisit and eat this same meal or try something different.
I recently visited this restaurant for brunch with a party
I recently visited this restaurant for brunch with a party of seven, and we had a fantastic experience. Although there was initially a 35-minute wait, we were pleasantly surprised to be seated outside after just 15 minutes. While I would have preferred indoor seating, the outdoor ambiance was still enjoyable. For appetizers, I had the sweet roll, which was absolutely delicious. My partner and I shared a pizza, and both dishes were superb. I also tried the non-alcoholic Annabelle drink, which was refreshing and delightful. One suggestion would be to include calorie counts on the menu for those who are interested. The highlight of our visit was undoubtedly our server. Although I didn't catch her name, she was incredible--attentive, energetic, and knowledgeable about the specials. Her excellent service truly enhanced our experience. I would definitely return if I'm ever in South Carolina again!
Sunday brunch with girlfriends was absolutely outstanding-
Sunday brunch with girlfriends was absolutely outstanding- we practically licked our plates clean. Our server was attentive and friendly - the menu had plenty of brunch staples and fun lunch items too. The food was perfectly cooked, portions just right and flavors amazing. The first I did after leaving was make another brunch reservation for a months time.
The Obstinate Daughter was a must during our visit in
The Obstinate Daughter was a must during our visit in Charleston due to all the reviews and recommendations. The Obstinate Daughter lives up to all the hype. The service, food and cocktails were on point. Let me just say, if my husband and I lived in Sullivan's Island, we'd be regulars at the bar. We went back the next day for some pizza and it was soo soo good and I don't eat a lot of pizza. This was the most fun and delicious dining experience we had during our stay in Charleston. Make a reservation because it's a busy restaurant
This was absolutely one of the best meals of my life.
I simply cannot think of a better place to eat for a multi-course Italian meal with friends and/or family. Our server, Ali, was AMAZING. Seriously, someone give her a raise!!! She was sweet, helpful, and very attentive. With her guidance, we each tried a cocktail and glass of wine, two appetizers, and three entrees to share. The portions were so large, but we were fine taking it all home to have leftovers! It was worth it to try the Brussels sprouts, shishito peppers, Rutledge pizza, vodka pasta, and the gnocchi. We ended the night with an affogato and flourless chocolate cake. 11/10 recommend! Seriously. And again, Ali is THE BEST!
Amazing
OMG this restaurant is fantastic. It has a very cool vibe! Great food and cocktails. Unbelievably welcoming staff. SO FUN! I will come back for sure.
Incredibly average
Cute, very beachy decor. Nice size bar and decent size restaurant. Drinks were creative and pretty good. However the food was average at best. We ordered peel and eat shrimp. They were mushy (undercooked). They were also under seasoned. That's 2 pretty big strikes in my book. Also ordered the "Local Lettuce". It was overdressed. Finally, ordered 2 pizzas. First was Miss Carolina, a margarita pizza. 2nd was The Rutledge. They both had fresh ingredients and tasted good however the crust was soggy and couldn't hold together as a slice. Overall, really disappointed in the meal. Wouldn't recommend or return.
Wonderful food!
I can see why this place has so many rave reviews. The food is wonderful. My husband and I split the salad and a pizza and it was just enough. We also had some of the chowder and we loved it all. PSβ¦there is an elevator as well. We often travel with my mother in law, who cannot get around as well. I was first worried about the stairs, but she made it. However there is an elevator to help.
Expect to wait for a table
One of my favorite places in Charleston. This gem of a place does get incredibly crowded and a bit tight at times. It is worth the wait! The staff was accommodating and attentive to all of our needs. They are open for lunch but only serve pizza during the late afternoon hours due to switching to dinner menu. All of my visits here have been wonderful!
The O/D is a must place to eat when in Charleston!
It feels like I have not been here for a while by the warm welcome I got from Frank the Manager and the great Two time nominated - James Beard Award - Chef Jacques Larson and our server, Dylan(who we just met). The Obstinate Daughter is focused on not so "small Plates from"farms and fishermen in the Low-Country who supply superior products that make the region so special." From wood fired pizza , house made Pastas and Panini all freshly prepared. Our group sampled killer Strozzapreti and Radiatore with fresh ricotta. As well as other samplings from the curated Lunch Menu. Save room for a short walk downstairs to the Beard cat offering dozens of flavors of the best in house produced Gelato this side of the Atlantic. We live in the area so will return on a regular basis.

Went a couple years ago and the seafood was absolutely amazing !! They were accepting of our large party and the service was quick. Thanks guys!
Nice place.
Wife really enjoyed it. Not a huge selection for vegan/ vegetarians. Lots of cheese

Was a busy Saturday so we put in our names down and went to walk on Sullivan's! Perfect way to wait for seats Ordered two plates and ate them family style. Well crafted dishes! We thought it paired really well because the swordfish dish is tarty and slightly sour from the capers and tomato while the piccolo is nutty and savory from the truffles and brussel sprouts! You get the same service sitting at the bar and there's plenty of dish space for you to eat! Had some trouble with elbow room (literally) so book in advance and ask for a table. For a last minute walk in, the bar being available was great.
Our favorite bite!
We had a fabulous meal here! We started with the local lettuce salad (large enough to share) with a delicious buttermilk vinaigrette. Wonderful! We each chose pastaβthe braised short rib with gnocchi and the strozzapreti. The short rib was melt in your mouth tender and the gnocchi delicious. The sausage and fennel ragout over homemade pasta was exceptional! We finished with delicious homemade gelato! Our best bite(s) in Charleston!

Located close to the beach, The Obstinate Daughter is a great location for a pre- or post- beach meal. If you're planning an outing with a larger group, this is also the place to be. We called ahead and made a reservation, which made the whole process seamless. While the private parking is limited, don't let that deter you -- there's plenty of street parking nearby, and the short walk is well worth it. The brunch offerings ranged widely -- there's something here for every palate. I opted for their radiatore pasta this time around and was not disappointed. From what I hear, the pizzas are equally outstanding. Our server was attentive and friendly, making our dining experience all the more enjoyable. Whether you're a local or just passing through Sullivan's Island, do yourself a favor and pay a visit here!
Rocked Our Visit!
You know how sometimes a highly hyped restaurant fails to live up to the reputation and you walk away wondering if it was not that great or maybe you had over imagined the experience? Well, not so at βODβ as they call it! What a wonderful experience! Great service and exceptional food! Gracious! We tried it out with a highly successful restauranteur friend and he was blown away too. Our server was so patient as we surfed several menu items. The Frogmore Stew was the best ever enjoyed. Each pizza was exceptional. The braised beef gnocchi was sublime. Oh, and fresh fresh oysters. Loved it all - ambiance, service, drinks, food. Totally worth trying to get in. Well done team!!

This place is fantastic! Our server was great, the food was delicious! One person had the fish of the day with veggies and it was all so good! Bolognese with short rib and the Old Bastard pizza were the other items ordered for the table. I'd have to say the pizza was the plate with the least amount of flavor, but everything was very good. The ambiance is fantastic, some tables are very close to each other and when staff is doing their thing, sometimes it could be intrusive, but won't stop me from recommending or coming back!

Such a great casual restaurant for dinner or brunch! Always fresh and always consistent!
Excellent every single time.
The food is so good. Service was efficient and good. Ambiance is always great. It is a little bit loud in there, but to be expected with a packed place :)
Delicious Dinner
Amazing food atmosphere and drinks!!! A 10 out of 10!!! You need to make a reservation weeks in advance unless you get lucky and can be a walk in⦠that wait is usually about an hour! Cute ice cream shop attached which is perfect for dessert!

What a cool location! Climb up to the second floor for a cozy, vibrant experience. We were craving pizza, which coincided perfectly with their pizza-only menu as they transitioned to dinner. The Rutledge pizza was terrific. The Italian sausage provided a nice flavor, the crust was baked perfectly, the cheese pull was mouthwatering, and the flakes added a little heat. The Moultrie was also excellent. The pepperonis were large and baked perfectly. Service was excellent, and the pricing was on par for what you get--I loved the decor with it's tie to historical events. I would absolutely visit again.
Awesome place! Multiple people had recommended this place
Awesome place! Multiple people had recommended this place to me and I'm so glad we made it here. Really cute place that is a little more casual but tastefully decorated to fit the beach vibes. I got the local lettuce salad with shrimp which was HUGE! Definitely could be shared with a few people or eaten alone if you're really hungry. I shared about a third of it with my boyfriend since he got the shrimp roll which was surprisingly smaller than expected but delicious nonetheless. He especially loved the polenta sticks that came with the roll. Really great place with reasonable prices and great atmosphere
Outstanding food, staff and settings.
We got reservations same day. Clean and street parking on a busy Wednesday night.
Nice option on Sullivan's Island
The restaurant service was terrific - our reservation was for 7:00 and we were seated immediately. We never felt rushed. We had comfortable seats in a booth - all very nice environment.
Great shared dinner.
Managed to get a last minute reservation. Love the atmosphere but just slightly little loud and crowded. Service was excellent. Our server Melanie suggested sharing items and thatβs what we decided to do. We started with the Brussel sprouts and they were really good and Iβm not a huge fan of them normally. There was plenty for 3 people to share. Then we shared a Rutledge pizza has just a tad of a kick with red pepper flakes then we finished by sharing the sausage and fennel pasta which was excellent. Great way to get a taste of several items. We followed dinner by getting gelato downstairs. Highly recommend and shareβ¦
Foodie heaven. Small. Quaint. Pricey. Date spot.
Pricey. Busy. Small. Foodie heaven. Had sausage pizza and local beer. Was good. Recommended by Charleston locals. Quaint part of town.
Great Expectations
O/D comes with high expectations. Reservations are scarce as henβs teeth - even midweek in offseason. The noise level makes it hard to have a conversation, so not a good choice for a first date. But the service is efficient and friendly. Pasta is made in-house. Portions are generous. Prices are reasonable. (Extravagant wines are available for big spenders looking to impress.) Food arrives fast, but there was no pressure to rush through our meal. Attracts a somewhat better-dressed (at dinner anyway) and younger crowd. Everyone seemed happy to be there. Not sure itβs worth a special trip from Charleston, but definitely the place to visit while on Sullivanβs Island.
5 Star place on SI.
We had a great meal at Obstinate Daughter on Sullivan's Island. Great food along with friendly and attentive service. These guys dont have to try to be hip...they are hip. Highly recommend the OD.
Early Pizza Dinner
We arrived for an early dinner. We began with Brussels sprouts. This was my absolute favorite dish. The flavor and crisp on each Brussel was perfect. The accompaniments served with the dish gave it a unique twist and made the dish even better. For dinner, I got The Old Danger pizza for dinner. The presentation was very cool with the whole egg served on top. The pizza was good but thought it couldβve used more flavor. I also tried the short rib gnocchi which was really good. Overall, all the dishes were very good to excellent, but the restaurant was very loud and music sometimes made it hard to hear people at the table.
Wonderful meal!
My wife, daughter and I recently had Brunch at Obstinate Daughter. We live local but had never been, so we were anxious to go. Both my wife and daughter had the Daily Quiche and really liked it. I am not a quiche guy but thought it was very good. I had the sausage grits bowl and ate all of it. We had the pecan bourbon creme brulee and spiced cake for dessert and polished it off easily. I wish the parking was a little better but it didn't outshine the restaurant and service.
Got brunch here with a friend for the first time.
Our waitress was incredibly friendly and personable. The atmosphere was lively but not stuffy. I think the cocktail I got was called a king's honey? Very tasty. We decided to order and share a few different smaller plates: lowcountry frites, apple salad, and a cheese board with jam that was one of their specials. All of it was delicious. It was also my birthday so our waitress brought out a free dessert. I think she said it was espresso gelato. This was a great experience and I will definitely be back. Definitely make a reservation in advance, though. It seemed to be pretty popular.

We loved, the children's pizza was great, as were shrimp rolls and everything. Then, we splurged more on the great gelato also available nearby. What a great find!
Loved the place, we went twice in 3 days.
Everythig was delicious and sta staff very friendly
Chi chi brunch spot
This is a go to for brunch in IOP/Charleston area for good reason. Wonderful food and an eclectic drink menu. There's something for everyone on the menu. Thought the food was very good.
My wife and I really wanted to try The Obstinate Daughter
My wife and I really wanted to try The Obstinate Daughter (OD), but hadn't been able to secure a reservation. We decided to take a chance and stop in for lunch, and to our delight, we were able to grab a table in the bar area.OD is a fun, little place with a great staff and friendly service. The atmosphere is warm and welcoming, making us feel right at home from the moment we walked in. The staff were attentive and knowledgeable, ensuring we had a pleasant experience. We started off with the Local Lettuce Salad, which was so fresh and delicious. The portion was huge, definitely enough for two people to share. It was a delightful way to begin our meal, and the quality of the ingredients really shone through. For our main course, we shared The Rutledge pizza. WOW! It was absolutely delicious! Creamy, rich, and savory, the flavors melded together in perfect harmony. The crust was the perfect balance of chewy and crispy, and the toppings were generous and well-distributed. We couldn't get enough of this mouthwatering pizza! We'll definitely be back for more!

The food was amazing from the drinks to desert and the bartender knows how to fill a glass. Highly recommend...relaxing ambience.
Visited this based on reviews and wasn't disappointed.
We had slight trouble finding it as the sign is fairly obscure and simply reads 'OD' if read from a distance (especially as you are driving past it). It is located upstairs and the decor is beachy-ocean casual. However, don't let the decor fool you, the wine list is extensive and the food - a foodie's delight. We ordered an Italian Pinot Grigio which had a light rose cast (very interesting!). It was a good choice with the local peel and eat shrimp. The shrimp were boiled in a flavorful mix and very fresh. The pizza -Old Danger- was amazing. It had a delicate white sauce topped with a flavorful combination of fresh ingredients including an egg! The pasta is made fresh in house and the strozzapreti had a wonderful sauce flavored with a touch of fennel. I'd suggest reservations if possible as even a weekday lunch found the place packed.
Absolutely fantastic, fresh, beautiful food.
Got the eggie pizza and the ricotta gnocchi to share. I could eat here every day. Just lovely! Wonderful service and nice atmosphere.

Love O/D! This place mainly serves Italian, French, and Spanish cuisine. All of their ingredients are of high quality. The staff are probably one of the more polite and professional ones that I've experienced in a while. My two friends and I shared 5 dishes together:Obstinate Flatbread: Way better than I expected. The bread came out warm and fluffy. The butterbean puree had a similar taste and texture to hummus.Local Lettuce Salad: Good size to split between 3 people. Nothing in the salad was too overbearing, so it was the perfect amount of dressing and toppings.Swordfish Siciliana: The fish was tender on the inside and had a nice Mediterranean taste to it overall.Gnocchi: It was the special of the day so I can't exactly remember the name... but the gnocchi was made out of semolina flour and cooked in tomato sauce with mozzarella over a skillet. Delicious. Smaller than I expected, so good to split for yourself and one other person. The Old Danger pizza: Probably the best dish of the night! Probably big enough to split between 2 people if you just order this. I like my guanciale slightly crispy, but still chewy. The yolky egg in the middle acted like a sauce for my slice, which I loved!
Loved this place! Staff was super friendly and helpful.
We did walk in, and were only able to be seated outside (it was chilly that night). Surprisingly, our server came down and informed us he was able to seat us inside! Which was amazing and we weren't expecting it. Four out of six of my party got the Radiatore, and it was to die for! The pasta was cooked perfectly and the sauce had so much flavor! Will definitely come back!
Obstinate Daughter was excellent
Everything from start to finish, from greeting of hostess, to warm but professional server to delicious food was excellent.
Food to die for
Hanging out in Charleston and saw a review of the Obstinate Daughterβ¦best decision ever! The food was amazingβ¦meatball sandwich and Frogmore chowder made a delicious and filling late lunch. Frank guided us through the menu and recommended wineβ¦he is the best! Highly recommend this fabulous restaurant!
Quick stop for fresh oysters
A Very nice place to grab a dozen fresh and a great cocktail. I was driving around Sullivanβs Island and just bumped into the Obstinate Daughter. I have two. π
