The Mountain House Woodside Reviews from The Last Year
The view, the food & the exceptional service - it all rises
The view, the food & the exceptional service - it all rises to a remarkable experience. Just go to Mountain House, you'll probably need reservations. It's remarkable. You won't regret it.
The forest location of the restaurant was beautiful.
However, during our dinner the room was uncomfortably hot for the entire evening. Also, the prices on The Mountain House's website are not accurate; online they were written as $74 per person, but the menu price was actually $82.
Wonderful food, wonderful rustic ambience--a great value
Wonderful food, wonderful rustic ambience--a great value compared to most tasting menus. Great bar with delicious drinks. Make a reservation before this place gets the Michelin and you can't get a seat. A hidden gem.
Came here for Easter brunch.
.. and to echo another review, the whole experience was disappointing. TL;DR: Unacceptable service for fine dining. Food was decent but had prepackaged mixes and overall nothing special. You have way better options in Woodside at a similar price range without the long drive into the mountain. FOOD: No bread before meal. Pastries were an additional add-on. All the pastries were of a cakey texture -- really surprised that there were no puff pastries at all. Cornbread tastes like it's out of a package mix. Waited 45min with no check-ins from the waiter before the starter. Big yikes! I had the duck, which was good. Too much oil on the lettuce underneath though. Then we had to wait another 30-40min after they cleared out our starters for the main. At this point, we were just baffled by the slow service when the restaurant is not even half full. I had the steak and eggs. Same sides as one of their add-on starters, which was disappointing and felt cheap. My dish was decent, though the steak was a bit stringy. My mom had the pancakes, and she said it tastes just like the pancake mix from Costco. SERVICE: The host left people frequently at the door, forming a long line out the door when everyone there had reservations and the restaurant was quite empty. Absolutely no care to seat people down when we get texts before we arrive that the table is ready. Once we are seated, the greetings from the server were cold. Didn't even bother asking if there was another occasion we were celebrating (we were actually there for my mom's birthday, but I guess they assume everyone must be Christians celebrating Easter). Awfully slow food service. Waiter didn't even bother to offer to check on the status of the food or check in as we waited. In the bill, they charge a 20% service fee, and waiter who showed up twice to our table through the entire service and who didn't even bother asking why we were there had the audacity to specifically ask us to leave an extra tip that goes just to her. No sorry, I'm leaving you this review instead. AMBIENCE: The forest was pretty cool, but beware that the glasshouse they have heats up a lot on a sunny day. The main part of the restaurant is really dark for reason, kind of depressing tbh.
DISAPPOINTED.
Not coming back. We did our dinner rehearsal here 15 years ago. This is our go-to place for special occasions and also for coming over just to have a nice dinner. We love this place. We were sad when Lori & Jerry closed the business. When we heard it is back with new management, we were excited and had to try the place. DISAPPOINTED. From food to waitstaff.

Beware!! Since the food, staff, and ambiance were so delightful, dinning at the Mountain House can be very habit forming. My wife and I just had a wonderful experience there and are certainly planning on repeating it.
Top quality food and service.
Had the venison and it was very tender. Atmosphere in the redwoods can't be topped.

Great scenery, food was pretty good, the service was awesome. Would visit again, it's perfect for a new date night.

We reserved a 5:45 pm table in the Forest Room, to allow a little time to see the room during sunset and eat at a decent time, not too early from our normal schedule. As others have commented, it's a beautiful space. With the glass ceiling, we were able to follow the height of the tree, enjoy the beautiful redwood forest around us and the last few rays of the sun setting coming through. Service was great! Our server was helpful to assist us in picking out dishes. The courses were well-paced, and dishes for all four of us would arrive at the same time. We were there to celebrate our sister's birthday. I had indicated that in our reservation, and when we arrived, they had asked whether we were celebrating something, and we confirmed; the host might've wished her a happy birthday also. Aside from that though, nothing was done for the birthday girl, not even a candle on one of the included desserts, which was fine; just a little surprised is all, given we were asked. The food was decent. The complimentary appetizer bites were a good start to the evening; the warm sourdough bread was good too. The stuffed quail was not our cup of tea - a bit too much stuffing; the prawns and the filet magnon were fine. The desserts were a bit too sweet for our taste, but that's subjective to each's preference. We liked the petit basque amongst the cheese course. At the time of writing of this review, the menu consists of three courses at $82 or $83 per person, with ~4-6 choices for each of the three courses. The rack of venison choice was a $15 add-on, while the filet mignon was a $25 add-on. Parking was slightly challenging; we ended up parking on the side of the road next to the restaurant's fence. It was still close and easy enough to walk to the restaurant. I would hate to be that customer that parks a little ways up/down/across the road from the restaurant though given how dark Skyline is after dark; there're no street lights. I'd imagine the Mountain House would be a beautiful lunch location - convenient for those hiking/biking in the neighboring redwood forest parks. Perhaps something the restaurant might consider?

My husband took me here for Valentine's Day, and it was exceptional! I really enjoyed everything! The food was outstanding, our server was great, and the ambiance was very romantic and cozy. We sat in the main dining room, and there was a heated vent right by our feet. I loved that! For the food, it's a 3 course meal. For my starter, I had the crudo of ahi tuna. It was paired with citrus fruits and fried shallots. The quality of the fish was amazing, and it just melted in my mouth! I could find no fault whatsoever with this dish. For my main, I had the crispy skin trout, and it was seasoned so well! And the skin was indeed crispy! For dessert, I had the banana bourbon cream pie, and it was nice and refreshing. We had champagne with our meal, and it paired nicely with all of my courses. I would definitely recommend this place! You will not leave hungry! They also give an amuse bouche in the beginning and financiers at the end, such a nice touch :)
A nice retreat to a setting reminiscent of a secluded spot
A nice retreat to a setting reminiscent of a secluded spot in the Sierra. The Mountain House has not lost what most restaurants have in the Bay and that is wonderful service. The food is excellent and the ambiance warm and welcoming.

I want to begin by saying it's one of the most amazing restaurant experiences I've had in a long time. You could be dressy or casual to come and have a beer with some Chips but I urge you to come for a date night. The servers were absolutely friendly and warm. Even though it was a busy day they made sure our orders were in right and came out just at the time. Food was delicious. I was in love with Elk Burger and the sourdough. Oh man. I could eat it everyday!! It's got cabin, hunting season vibe. Beautiful and unique spot in bay area thank you guys. Sending much love.
Though my wife and I live in San José.
..The Mountain House has fast become our "local" hang out. Love everything about it. Both the bar menu and now the prix fix menu in the Forest Room and main dining room. Love that you can choose--and that each menu and room is so different. Nothing's really formal (in a negative sense). It really is a "mountain" house--and feels like it. You can feel the Santa Cruz mountain culture in the walls (let alone from the redwoods outside). And the loving care--in the beautiful food, environment, and staff--is so palpable, without being pretentious, every time. We've been there with our kids, with friends from out of the country, and just by ourselves on a date (or anniversary) night. There hasn't been a time I've sat in the bar and a really interesting conversation with another (local) guest hasn't come up. It's the perfect marriage of a genuine mountain house and such lovingly prepared and interesting food and service. I've eaten my way through the menu and have been thoroughly grateful every time. No matter what mood I'm in, or what I think I'm looking for, it always ends up having exactly what I'm looking for...even before I know that myself.
I was sad to see The (old) Mountain House close its doors
I was sad to see The (old) Mountain House close its doors for good during Covid. I was happily surprised to see it open a year later under new owners and chefs. (Yelp is treating it as the same business as before, but since when does accuracy matter here?). So it feels a little weird to write an "update" to a business I've never actually experienced before. It was my eldest daughter who picked the (new) Mountain House for her recent birthday dinner. I had warned her that the food and menu were now different, but she was undeterred. She was more focused on the swanky cabin-in-the-woods atmosphere. (Thankfully that is mostly unchanged). We made a reservation and drove up the hill on a cold, rainy night. Brrrr. Once we passed the front bar area (with a roaring fireplace) there were two main rooms for dining, the Main Room and the Forest Room. They had space in both, so we chose the latter for its view of the partly-lit trees (and the patter of rain on glass). The menu had been recently updated to prix fixe only (a starter, an entree, and a dessert). My daughter chose the bacon-wrapped quail, the venison loin, and a chocolate mousse/praline crunch bar. I had the beet & citrus salad, the trout with mushrooms in red-wine reduction, and the cheese plate. It was all fabulous. I could go on, but I won't. Other Pros: - They kept bringing us little surprise treats during the meal, like baked cheese puffs before the apps, and huckleberry financiers during dessert (also a special lemon tart and candle for the birthday girl) - Four words: Warm, homemade sourdough bread Cons: - The staff seemed very young and inexperienced, which seemed odd for such a high-end place. One server could not recall the details of one dish we asked about. Another server brought the wrong wine; I had to correct him. (wow) - The lighting was too dark to read the menu. Thankfully I have a flashlight on my phone. - The menu was quite a bit different than the menu we had seen online earlier that day (It was still unchanged the next day); this just doesn't seem that hard to fix. As for the prices...Well, The Mountain House is as expensive as it gets in the Bay Area. I was prepared for that, but for this level I expected something closer to perfection, including the service and other little details. In short, the Mountain House is worthy of a special occasion, especially for those who like the luxury-meets-rustic vibe, but it's not a place to visit on a regular basis, at least for a meal (unless you own a corporation). As for the future, I hope to come back to try the more pedestrian bar menu in the front room; and sit by that fire.
Great service and the food was excellent.
The bread and the homemade chips were delicious. We both also really enjoyed the pasta and dessert. My husband loved everything including the drinks. The only thing preventing me from going monthly is the drive. It was a lovely experience.
From Spain
How I would like to meet him! I hope I can travel to the USA soon and have lunch or dinner at Mountain House reliving the filming of Harvest Moon.
December in the mountains…
So quaint and rustic. Perfect atmosphere for this time of year. There were tables in the window enclosed room and tables by the fireplace. Being so dark outside, we were glad to have reserved the fireplace seating. It was a prix fixe menu so we tried the endive gem salad, scallops, short ribs, gnocchi, chocolate mousse and date toffee pudding. Start to finish, great food and substantial portions. The service was excellent! Would definitely return for brunch and sit in the window enclosed section to admire the surrounding redwoods.

Great Service - amazing dinner!!
Read about the site in NYT and bought a reservation at Mother Wolf in LA 2 days later. Worked great and the food was amazing!!!
Worked perfectly!
Got the reservation (that I couldn't get anywhere else) and was able to entertain a group of friends at the infamous Bern's Steakhouse.
Got into Nobu Malibu
Wonderful! My parents are visiting and we have wanted to go to Nobu Malibu for years. I tried getting a reservation myself but it was next to impossible. So glad I was able to buy a reservation on appointment trader for a decent price!
Very easy
Was very hesitant going into this experience but am glad to say that it worked out very well ! will definitely use appointment trader in the future
Fabulous Lunch
I was veeeeeerry skeptical that this would work, particularly at a restaurant as hard to get into as Nobu Malibu, and it was perfect! We had lunch outside on the patio and it was fabulous!
Great reviewer team
Just wanted to take a second to shout out the reviewer team. Even though they probably review hundreds of listings and bids a day, they still take the time to leave great comments and respond relatively quickly. Thanks!
Incredible
I got a reservation to Don Angie, which I've been trying to book for weeks! I am very happy with this service.
Best platform out there!
Super simple, easy, and fast to secure reservations for hard-to-get restaurants and locations!
This app is life changing
This app has opened my world up to so many wonderful new experiences I would never have the chance to have without access to this awesome app! 10/10!

Worked well, got me into a restaurant with no availability
I was skeptical, and I still don't really know how they managed to find this hard-to-find reservation, but it was a win-win from my point of view, and I'll use this service again.
Last minute reservation for Delilah Las Vegas
Got a last minute reservation, dinner for 2 at Delilah Las Vegas: super impressed! The process was simple, transaction seamless. We had an amazing time! Couldn’t be happier! 😍
It works!
Ok at this point I've attended a reservation purchased on AT by a friend and sold a reservation personally. Both worked pretty smoothly, nothing sketchy about it. A few areas for improvement including a way to more directly communicate between buyers and sellers, but the app always seems to be in development. AT customer support is really(!) responsive and helpful too if you have questions!
Money transfer
As a seller, I like the fact i have the ability now to transfer money out of my AT account and into a bank account. Makes getting the money much easier then the process before.
Love this app
Got to go to places otherwise unreachable
Easy Access
Very easy to get into one of the hardest restaurants to reserve in New York.
Whose name will my reservation be under when I arrive at the venue?
It can be under your name or a name you choose! Some reservation offers already include the AppointmentTrader Transfer Service which will transfer the reservation in to your name. If its not included you can add it on after buying the reservation for a small fee. One thing on that though: As many reservations become available at last minute, taking a reservation in someone else name is quick and great for privacy. Most reservations on AT are listed with a virtual phone number, so all you need to do is present the phone number at the hostess stand and you are good to go!
Payouts Blocked Because of Sell Through Rate
Does anyone know how AT plans to handle cases where a seller is quitting the platform but has a sell through rate <25%? The error message I got said to fill more bids or find other ways to increase the rate.
Is AT really going to block sellers from withdrawing their money? Especially revenue made before the sell through rate was introduced??

I will give you 50% of ALL of my PROFITS if you teach me how to make profits?
LOL. Thank you The New Yorker.
Appointment
Transferring reservations is not supported in AT. Why not just use the name in the AT screenshot?
Buyers interested in Bern's Steakhouse: PLEASE READ
Same goes for 4 Charles and I Sodi
Prepaid Reservation Fee
Agreed. Ultimately not addressing this month after month is clearly resulting in a drop in certain venue’s rankings & sales.
Congrats on 3 mil
🍾🍾🍾🍾🍾🍾🧨🧨🧨 now on to 30 mill!
Need to cancel a bid, not getting a response… how do I do it?
Click on "Take off the Market Option" in your portfolio
Working on your bid?
Your bid has been “matched” with a reservation. From the time a reservation has been located, the seller of the reservation must connect with moderator to give transfer information for reservation. If the seller;however, does NOT respond to reservation transfer, then your bid is reprocessed and returns to the first step, which is connecting your request to a reservation.
Process after bid is accepted.
Hey @EvocativeFold67, welcome to appointmenttrader! Once the reservation is in your portfolio, you definitely own the timeslot, the review team would not have approved the trade if the reservation wasn't confirmed - so you are going :-) Judging from your post you bid today and are going tomorrow - don't worry as long as you initiated the name transfer, you are good - the transfer service has to work with the opening hours of the reservation team of the respective venue. You will likely see the transfer confirmation a couple hours before your reservation time.
Where do the Reservations on AppointmentTrader come from?
Mostly from people who don't need their reservations or appointments any longer. AT has no relationship with places listed and acts as a platform connecting buyers and sellers making sure that listed reservations are real and that privacy is not compromised when transacting.
What happens if my bid expires unanswered?
Hey @FluffyStar64, thanks for the question! When you place your bid the amount gets transferred in a deposit account, the second you either cancel your bid or a few minutes after the bid expires the funds are moved back into your main account from where you can refund it to your payment method or use for other transactions.
