Good food, but not memorably good We had the tasting menu

3/5 by 👻 @Shari L. on 06/25/2024

Good food, but not memorably good We had the tasting menu to share. Dishes were overall good, although some were not as well balanced or well executed as one might have expected for the price point. Ambiance was intimate and romantic. Service was fine. Would be open to returning to give it another shot given all the positive reviews, although I'm not in a huge hurry to do so.

We came with reservations for 6pm.

4/5 by 👻 @Stephanie M. on 06/15/2024

We were promptly seated in a very full restaurant. I ordered the pearl martini. It was a little too strong for me and had a bit too much onion flavour. We got the I want it all! For 89$ per person. The showstopper salad with legumes, cheese and salsa Verde. It was really fresh tasting. very big portion. The chicken of the sea was complex and delicious. But I was really disappointed with the black squid brioche. It lacked the fluffiness that you usually get with the brioche. The texture just wasn't right. But the sea urchin with the hazelnut was a really good combination. I liked the addition of the fruit as well to help cut through the sea urchin. I would recommend this dish if it wasn't for the brioche. The garden state was probably one of the best dishes of the night. I loved the puree on the bottom. It was really good and addictive. It needed a tad more chicken skin for a bit of extra crunch but other than that. I also loved the asparagus. This was perfect. The faux tartare was disappointing. The beef had no beef flavour. I liked the crackers. Very crunchy. But other than that it was disappointing. The pierre Elliot credo with the hamachi was okay. Nothing show stopping but the flavours were there. Needed a bit more sourness for it to taste fresh The straight outta comte was not bad. I loved the fingerling potatoes and the endive. The arctic Charley was okay. Not my favorite. I loved the crispness of the skin. I didn't think the sauce Vin rouge went with it. The de la sole with leeks truffle and pate brisee was okay. It needed way more truffle flavour. The Cauliflower cakes were creative but didn't tie well with the sole inside the pastry. The sole itself was very flaky and light. A bit too seafoody for us. The down the rabbit hole was quite interesting. The mortadella inside the rabbit was very interesting. The chicken skin wrapped on the outside of this dish was pretty good. I loved the contrast of textures. The mortadella was a bit tofu feeling but interesting. The full English with the morel mushrooms was okay. The lamb didn't have much lamb flavour but this dish tasted pretty standard, nothing special. The desserts pear necessities and pink chiffon desserts were okay. The pear necessities was kind of one dimensional and tasted mostly like chocolate. The chocolate part on the bottom had a kind of weird texture. I didn't have enough room for the pink chiffon . The creme diplomat was delicious though. Overall the service here was really good. The food started great and ended on kind of a disappointing note. If I visit again I would not get the I want it all because it's just too much food. Off their current menu I would recommend the garden state, chicken of the sea, straight outta comte and down the rabbit hole.

The Mackenzie Room was full of surprises, and all great

5/5 by 👻 @Molly T. on 02/21/2024

The Mackenzie Room was full of surprises, and all great ones. We tried things we loved that we initially didn't expect to like, we had supremely accommodating and friendly service, we ran into people we knew in a city we had never been to before, and we entertained a menu concept that was right up our alley. When we finished our last few bites here, I remarked that the food here was subtly unique but I couldn't put my finger on how. Maybe it's because I don't have much exposure to Canadian cuisine, which is very similar to American cuisine but not necessarily the same. We had been in Whistler for a wedding for a long weekend and wanted to spend a night in Vancouver, a city neither of us had been to before. I looked up a zillion restaurants for dinner, of course. A good number of them were closed because it was Sunday, and I ultimately chose The Mackenzie Room because it a) was open, b) had a great pre fixe concept, c) had an amazing-looking menu, and d) seemed relatively central. As soon as we walk in, who do we see but another couple who had been at the wedding that weekend, two of the few people we actually knew there. Great minds (they also loved their meal). The ambiance here is warm and inviting, and very down to earth considering how refined the food is. Though not posted online, the cocktail menu here is a formidable one. Clearly everyone dining here thought so, because the bartender was working nonstop while we were there. It took a while to get our first round of drinks so our server brought us a little glass of champagne. After that, I had the Werewolf in Vancouver (odd society mongrel, chili, maple, black walnut bitters) which was a rich and spiced old fashioned variation with unaged rye (essentially moonshine). A delicious winter cocktail. I then got the featured cocktail which I did not take a picture of but I know it was made with pork fat-washed bourbon, a complex whiskey sour. My partner loved his drinks too (he got a gin sour-type drink and a tiki-style drink with calvados). So food-wise, Mackenzie Room offers a pre fixe set menu of five courses for two people. I saw each dish listed up on the chalkboard with accompanying prices, making me think that a la carte was an option, but they said it was not. You can ask to maybe swap one thing out but otherwise you've got what you've got. We ended up swapping out pork for quail but otherwise kept the menu as is. I was sad to miss out on a few things (we also weren't intending to get dessert) but most of what we got was seriously great. Eats, below: Amuse bouche - something delicious on top of a gourmet tater tot. Can't remember much else other than it being a sign of great things to come. Chicken of the Sea (sea urchin, hazelnut, squid ink brioche): A+ This is their signature dish, the only one you are absolutely forbidden from swapping out. My partner is not a fan of sea urchin so he was nervous, but ultimately he may have loved this dish more than I did. It was rich, savory, umami, altogether decadent. I have a gluten sensitivity so I ate it by the spoonful which was just fine by me. Root 66 (parsley root, almond, salsa verde, radish): A I believe they said this was the only vegan dish on the menu. Such a beautiful and creative winter salad, with perfectly roasted yellow carrots, thinly sliced parsley root and a nutty salsa that brought it all together. Arctic Charley (salsify, split pea sauce vin rouge): A Stunning cook on the fish (said in a Gordon Ramsey voice), with a flavorful shallt puree, raw cabbage, delicious roasted mushrooms and a light but flavorful sauce. You've Got Quail (root vegetable pave, mushroom, currants): A+ Another spectacular dish, with chicken sweetbread-stuffed quail that melts in your mouth. The root vegetable pave nearly won out as my favorite component of the dish. The Pear Necessities (chocolate, salted caramel, peppercorns): A- The only A- of the night because the chocolate cake itself was a bit dry. The other components were excellent. When our server asked how the meal was we gave a rave review but my partner mentioned the cake -- our server said he had heard this a few times already so perhaps it was an off night for the cake. Speaking of our server - this guy was so kind, friendly, and generous. This sort of thing really does make a difference. He seemed genuinely interested in knowing about our travels. He gave us a little bit of Montenegro as a digestive to close out our meal, a perfect way to end our short Vancouver adventure.

Honestly, I would not recommend it and definitely won't be

2/5 by 👻 @Aryton L. on 01/07/2024

Honestly, I would not recommend it and definitely won't be back, we ordered a combination of items of which the server recommended, but I can't recall the majority of the dishes ordered possibly because of their ever changing menus or long waits in between each course. Although outside the restaurant is rather sketchy the restaurant itself is very nicely decorated, quite dark and very very exceptional place for a good conversation. We basically had a new plate for every course and the waiter wonderfully explained each dish. The one dish I mostly enjoyed was the squid ink brioche, the squid ink bread was to my liking. We also had two orders of fish (trout & halibut) which were modest, basic, smidgen, and catastrophically overpriced along with a showstopper salad, sashimi not, and one more plate of red meat which name leaves me currently. There was one dish I severely hate, I don't know it's name (I believe it's called "radishes on Harrisa" after searching for it) but it had this purplish thing in the middle which tasted horrendous this thing absolutely obliterated my enjoyment of this establishment. We also had both their desserts which were pretty good, stuck on to my teeth but that's when you know tastes good, right!? Anyways I left with a nearly void stomach and a check for around ~330 dollars for three.

A clearly overpriced place.

No options of wine for less than 90 dollars. The dish Crabby American costed us 108 dollars, because we added lobster at 50 dollars. the lobster was presented as half lobster, but in fact was a small tale of a baby lobster. of course, no word about a price when suggested to add lobster. the dish Squid game was very tasty but less than 100 gr. we paid 260 dollars for 2 people with no wine. I took gin tonic and my partner bier. the location is weird. 10 min walking east from gas town. you see interesting characters there

A very overpriced restaurant in an edgy area of Vancouver

3/5 by 👻 @TrailBlazer818047 on 01/05/2024

The portions are very small and overpriced. We paid 108 dollars for the “Crabby American” with added lobster, which was presented to us as a half lobster. As you see from the pictures it’s just a small tale of a baby lobster. The lobster itself was 50. They don’t give any choice of reasonable wine. The bottles start from 90. I took gin (pictured) and my partner took beer. I liked the “Squid games” but the portion was less than 100 g. We payed 265 dollar for a dinner of three dishes of a small size with no wine. Clearly very overpriced place. The location is in a rough area. It’s not the Gastown but 10 min walk to the East side.

The mackenzie room is on the michelin selection list that it is recommended to try. For $89, you can get it all which is actually for the size of 5 people for each dish if you want to choose alacarte. Most of the selections are really good and some others need improvement and that is why i am not able to give 5 star yet. But mostly it is good already so keep it up. Cheers! Recommended to come and try!!

I can't say enough good things about the Mackenzie room.

5/5 by 👻 @Melissa T. on 11/06/2023

Everything from the service, to the ambiance, to the food was 5 . The moment we walked in, we were greeted by a server and our coats were taken to their coat room. It's a smaller restaurant and has a more intimate feel -- perfect for a date night! One of the servers explained that they have a tasting menu of 5 courses (2 smaller plates, 2 bigger mains, & 1 dessert) which were to be shared between me and my husband. We had the option to add on any of the other dishes for an additional cost. We got the squid games since it was highly recommended by our server and I'm so happy we did! Squid games was a carbonara dish where they subbed out the pasta with squid. We couldn't believe how perfectly cooked it was! It was so tender and soft. Every bite of food was thoughtfully prepared and so simple, yet SOOO GOOD. The pictures speak for themselves but you have to try this food for yourself to see what I'm talking about. This was definitely on my list of top 5 favorite meals I've ever had. My only problem is that we're not from Canada so I can't go anytime soon to try their other dishes. But we will definitely be back again when we visit next.

Chicken of the Sea.

4/5 by 👻 @Rod U. on 10/29/2023

I'll get back to this. Exposed brick, unfinished concrete juxtaposed against richly stained and varnished reclaimed wood. The space exudes old world charm with modern sensibility. The menu, balanced and seasonal, vibrant and fresh. Creative names for dishes an great touch. "Chicken of the sea", a mousse made from chicken liver and uni topped with hazelnuts to be spread on torn squid ink brioche. Rich, with offal mineral notes and incredible umami from the uni. The only thing that would make this better; a few splashes of Sauterne or in this case, ice wine (when in Rome) in the mousse. It is so good and paired so well with some BC wine that it needed to be ordered twice. The "Showstopper salad", is just that, a showstopper. Loaded with greens, different kinds of legumes, pickles, and herbs. Loads of texture and flavors with each bite. Unable to progress to any mains after two sea chickens and instead opting to finish off with additional pours of locally produced wines. Service is attentive with a casual feel. Solid mixology program. Very well chosen wine list with lots of locally produced wine. Unfortunately, not having been to a wine store in the city, I cannot comment on the markup. A comfortable foodie paradise for those wanting to get at taste of the city. Recommended.

Genuinely the best food we had in Vancouver, we’ve been to a lot of Michelin star restaurants in the UK and this was up there with them in terms of originality and execution as well as exceptional service. We had the “just the two of us” tasting menu and although it was plenty, we added another two dishes because we didn’t want to miss out! The pairings were also great, the whole thing was excellent value for money. Don’t let the proximity to a sketchy area put you off, just get a taxi 😄

So we wanted it all: first courses of greens and sea urchins, vegetable dishes, fish, meats and finally deserts; all to be shared, often thinking « I wish I could have it all to myself »… Creative dishes, never-boring arrangements of flavors, cordial service and spot-on suggestion of wine. 3/5 by 👻 @Gihani D. on 03/06/2023

We did the tasting menu and tried most things on the menu. The salad and chicken of the sea dishes were fantastic. The gods flan was amazing, though the portion was tiny. The lamb tartare and pigs in a blanket was pretty good. Generally, the meat and fish dishes were decent but some didn't hit right with me, primarily the trout. It was my first time having trout though. The service was extremely slow. Despite having a reservation for the tasting menu. We didn't get our first dishes until an hour after we sat down. We were so hungry! The restaurant was very loud and dark. The lights were dimming and un-dimming sporadically. I couldn't really see the colors of the food. Not really my preferred ambiance. Now the reasons I gave it a 3: Someone in our group has a nut allergy and they did an AWFUL job catering to it. At least 2 or 3 dishes had nuts in a way that could not be separated out. And they did not offer an alternative! I'd understand if we just walked in and ordered something but we booked the tasting menu a month in advance, specifically called out the nut allergy in the reservation, and even called to confirm they could accommodate. The person with a nut allergy just got LESS FOOD than the rest of us despite paying for the full cost. Ridiculous, especially for a $$$$ restaurant.

Keeps on serving up the most inventive, delicious food in Vancouver.

5/5 by 👻 @John C on 03/04/2023

We have been to The Mackenzie Room many times since it first opened a few years ago. Yesterday was a last minute decision. We sat at the bar, always a nice choice for two and ordered the menu for two - two starters, two mains, and one dessert. As usual, each element was inventive, perfectly prepared and left us wanting to lick the plates. The set menu consisted of the sea urchin pâté (always on the menu: without a doubt the best starter known to man), roasted parsnips ablaze with flavour, melt in your mouth salmon, and a lamb dish with rare loin and a croquette of raised neck meat. For dessert, a mini chocolate cake filled with quince, topped with chestnut whipped cream, surrounded by thin, crisp, chocolate biscuits. This doesn’t actually do the whole thing justice, as each dish was accompanied by incredible veggies, sauces, bits of preserved fruit etc. etc. If you have never been to TMR, you need to go right away…

Good food, not worth the chaotic experience

3/5 by 👻 @Ruth F on 02/25/2023

Visiting Vancouver we headed to the MacKenzie room which we had read a glowing review of. The food, for the most part, lived up to the review, especially the absolutely perfectly and divinely prepared sablefish. But the experience, as a whole, was just a bit too chaotic to make it a fully enjoyable experience and ended up being very off-putting. We arrived at the same time as another group that had a similar name on their reservation, and although we were first, they gave the other party our table. After waiting a bit more we were finally seated and told that the cocktail on their day’s menu was no longer available because they didn’t have the ingredients. Service was friendly but quite slow and an hour and a half later we had to explain to one of the several servers that checked on us that we still had not had our dinner. I can see the appeal of this place. Walking in it’s as if a Brooklyn farm to table “cool” restaurant had been transported into Vancouver. But, as someone who has eaten at way too many of those, I am looking for a well-run restaurant with great food. This one seems to be haphazardly hanging onto the coat-tails of a really good chef.

This place was great! My husband and I did the meal for two

5/5 by 👻 @Lauren W. on 02/24/2023

This place was great! My husband and I did the meal for two and ordered a single dish for our six year old although we all shared everything. Everything was delicious and I would encourage diners to make sure they get a piece of each component with the first bite of each dish. The raves about Chicken of the Sea are spot on and the 99 Poblanos is incredibly refreshing but my personal favorite was the Pigs in a Blanket. The sweet breads are deep fried so even if you're not usually a fan, what isn't good fried? I'm also not a chocolate lover but the Quince of Darnkess is not overly sweet and the cheese/quince combo is the real star of the show. Everything was wonderful and the staff was incredible, I cannot say enough positive things. My only regret was not have two more people with us so that we could try the whole menu!

Truly one of the best meals I've had in a long time.

5/5 by 👻 @Allison Y. on 01/30/2023

I was afraid that The Mackenzie Room's recent recognition by the Michelin Guide would cause it to become overrated, but I was relieved to find that was not the case. I genuinely enjoyed every aspect of my dining experience here. The best way to do this is to gather three of your friends, convince them to spend $82 per person, and order the "I Want It All," which is a tasting menu that features... well, the whole menu. The four of us jumped at this chance to try all twelve dishes for a price that isn't cheap but also isn't absurdly expensive. If I started talking about all twelve dishes, this review would become a novel, so I'll talk about my highlights. The Chicken of the Sea is hands down one of the most unique dishes I've had. I'm not sure how they got sea urchin to have that dense, creamy texture, but there was some wizardry involved I imagine. The Wesley Snips was a luxurious blue cheese parsnip dish that balanced sweet and salty like no other. The miso beurre blanc in the Sir Salmon Rushdie was rich and smooth; I wanted to drink it. I loved Hello Clarice; I was amazed at how they managed to cut the gaminess of raw lamb to make an Asian inspired tartare. My friends also raved about the cocktails, a smoky Mezcal Manhattan. For $82 per person before tax and tips, this is not cheap. But it is worth going to for a special occasion. Now to go brainstorm what "special occasion" I can come up with so that I can come back...

Today I came here after reading an article saying this was the best restaurant you have never heard of. I ordered a Brassneck Pale Ale to start and was served a frothy tall glass of magical ale. I took a perusal at the menu and decided I would like salmon tonight. I have noticed that inflation has had it's way here as the per person plate for I want it all is now $76.00. The salmon was tangy. I cannot describe it any other way except that the lemon and vinegar on the Salmon was tangy and quite refreshing. It was a decent dinner and I'm going to have to come back another time their other dishes.

My boyfriend and I wanted a great experience to celebrate our anniversary and boy did we receive exactly that!We started with the famous Chicken of the Sea and we both loved it! The stronger pate flavour was beautifully contrasted with the pear and onion purée sauce. All of them together or separately eaten with the brioche was delicious. We also ordered a salmon dish, Sir Salmon RushdiI'm usually not one for fish but this salmon was cooked perfectly - just below completely cooked though but not the slightest raw at all. It was so tender that it almost melts/crumbles in your mouth! Our last main was the famous Kamo-Flage duck dish. I am more picky with my duck but let me tell you! Like the fish, the duck was perfectly cooked, not overdone and not undercooked. The meat was very tender and juicy. It was very well paired with the watercress purée and picked veggies, which cleansed the palette after each bit of meat. I would absolutely go back for the Kama-Flage!

I make an effort to dine at The Mackenzie room at least

5/5 by 👻 @Monica K. on 11/01/2022

I make an effort to dine at The Mackenzie room at least once a year, usually during the fall or winter as these menus appeal to me more than the spring and summer (the menu is always changing). Except for two dishes that's is always on the menu, Chicken of the Sea and Showstopper salad. I've been coming here since they first opened and it is definitely my favourite restaurant in Vancouver! I remember in the beginning when chicken of the sea (chicken liver and uni mousse) was not permanently on the menu yet, so I was at the restaurant quite often. I was obsessed and didn't want to miss out. Every dish is bursting with flavour. The best bite, a little bit of everything on to your utensil: protein, sauce, sides. Perfect bite! I made the mistake of only taking a piece of pork chop, it was just okay. But when I took a little piece of everything on the plate with the pork chop, amazing!!! It was my first time trying the "I want it all" feature. The dishes did not disappoint. However, the desserts were mediocre to me. Personally, I'm not a dessert person. I could've done without and had another savoury dish.

Each posting on AppointmentTrader shows you which user submitted it and along with that provides a trackrecord of that user which indicates how much experience the user has and how many percent of their transactions resulted in them issuing a refund.

If there is no user posting that fits your schedule, you can bid on your preferred time.

Let's say Peter has a great morning and decides to take his three friends to The Mackenzie Room Vancouver at 6 PM the same day.

He checks the restaurant's website and sees that no reservations are available. He then looks at the The Mackenzie Room Vancouver page on AppointmentTrader, but finds that there are no user postings either.

That's where the community-driven bid process comes in.

Peter can place a bid on AppointmentTrader, which serves as a reward for any community member who chooses to work on securing the reservation. AT then notifies experienced users who may be able to help.

Step-by-Step Process
1.) Setting a Reward (Bid)
* AppointmentTrader uses historical data to recommend a reasonable reward amount for securing a reservation - let's say $100.
* Peter really wants to go, so he increases the bid (or reward) to $200.
* At this stage, the reservation does not exist yet.

2.) A Community User Picks Up the Bid
* FulfilledThread16, an experienced AT user, has a strong track record of successfully securing reservations and low refund requests, they receive a notification about Peter's bid.
* FulfilledThread16 picks up the bid, meaning they will now work on securing the reservation.
* Peter can now talk to FulfilledThread16 for any questions Peter may have as FulfilledThread16 user fills the bid.

3.) Finding the Reservation
* FulfilledThread16 now uses their connections at The Mackenzie Room Vancouver to secure the table.
* If they successfully get the 6 PM table for four, Peter receives a confirmation that the reservation has been secured.
* If FulfilledThread16 fails to secure the reservation, the bid is returned to the pool so another user can try.

4.) Payment & Protection
* Once the reservation is secured, FulfilledThread16 receives the $200 reward which is credited to FulfilledThread16's AT balance, where users manage their own funds and can withdraw via available payout options such as bank transfer, PayPal, or Zelle.
* Peter can now enjoy the dinner with his friends at The Mackenzie Room Vancouver!
* As with all transactions on AT, disputes and no-show fees are handled through the platform's community-driven resolution system. Users with a strong track record are incentivized to fulfill bids successfully, and community members can report issues to maintain trust in the marketplace.
