Family celebration with older teenagers
What an amazing experience. The night time view is spectacular and the food was divine. Relaxed but very attentive and friendly staff. And the relief of not having to choose food is a real luxury (no food envy!) Just trusting the very talented chefs to deliver a culinary delight. A very special and memorable experience and up there as one of our favourite meals…
Be the first to ReplyExpensive views!
Good food - Expensive for a fixed menu. Specialised tea and truffles was a Clipper tea bag and two measly chocolates for £9.50!! That was particularly disappointing! The views are amazing!
Be the first to ReplyUnforgettable dining experience
My boyfriend and I visited last weekend on a weekend trip from London and we’ve both said it was one of (if not the) best dining experience we’ve had. When we made the reservation, they asked for our dietary requirements so when we arrived the pescatarian tasting menu was on our table and the staff were so attentive. The vibe was incredibly relaxed which I loved, I tend to steer away from tasting menu restaurants where the atmosphere is quite quiet and stuffy. Each course was amazing, we opted out of the cheese board and I don’t eat it but I’m sure it would’ve been just as good as the rest. It was perfect for an occasion - the candles, fairy lights, and incredible views of the city. Reasonably priced and the waitress recommended us somewhere to go after which was just perfect. You can see the chefs cooking and it seems like a great team that work there. Thank you!
Be the first to ReplyDelightful and beautiful view
Beautiful views of Edinburgh and the food was clean, simple, and satisfying. We had the 5 course meal at lunch and it took about 90 min. Definitely worth every penny, service was excellent. The restaurant was able to accommodate my husband’s food restrictions without making him feel left out in the experience.
Be the first to ReplyGreat food and view!
Went here for lunch to celebrate a special occasion. It was pouring with rain so didn’t get much of a view (need to return for that!). The staff were great, the food was very tasty and the wine was top class.
Be the first to ReplyWonderful views to go with perfect restaurant
Worth every step to climb up to this wonderful restaurant. Amazing views directly to the Castle, over Edinburgh and across to Fife. Food is beautifully repaired and locally sourced. Staff are attentive and knowledgeable. It is a bit pricey although perfect for special occasions. It’s my favourite restaurant in Edinburgh.
Be the first to ReplySunday lunch, ouch!
Ouch! Sunday set lunch £65 in a rathar cramped spare atmosphere less space. Hadnt clock no a la carte on Sunday. I was disappointed in sticky table with white candlegrease clumps which were not cleared away. Food was nicely prepared and delicious, and served by friendly staff, albiet a bit less slick than I would have liked. I cant reccommend though, as this was NOT value for money with coffee etc as an extra. If Martin Wishart can do Midweek lunches for under £50, there is no contest. The terrific view comes for free while walking round the restaurants exterior. Elizabeth Wilson
Be the first to ReplyLovely food, woeful service.
In a nut shell, the food is excellent but absolutely let down by woeful service. We had lunch, early seating at 12. We had planned on having a tasting menu but were confused when we walked into what appeared to be an empty cafe. Ignored by three members of staff who were not busy dealing with all the old coffee pots and mess on the tables. I had to approach a lady and asked if we could sit, we had after all paid £20 to reserve our table and they were supposed to be booked solid. We were placed poorly in the middle of the room on a small, sticky, rickety table and paper napkins. The kind of sticky where you’d need to sand the table back and start again. Not fine dining, so we went for a light lunch instead. The food was very lovely, but the atmosphere and poor service let the whole experience down. I strongly suggest to management to have a look at what’s going on. Staff must not be happy in their jobs, no one smiled at us, we were twice brought items we didn’t order and there wasn’t even soap in the bathrooms! Service is automatically added and just as well as we wouldn’t have tipped, maybe that’s why they don’t bother? All in all a grave disappointment which I wouldn’t recommend to anyone.
Be the first to ReplyDon't go for drinks!
We popped in for drinks...£8.50 for a small 330ml can of lager and it wasn't even properly chilled! Sparkling wine served in a tumbler The house wine was OK at £8 a glass but nothing special. We waited a long time after ordering and then were hit with a twelve and a half percent service charge of £4.95 just to be served a round of drinks! They were not happy when we asked to have it removed from the bill but the lager on its own made us determined not to pay it. To be fair I can't comment on the food which has some good reviews.
Be the first to ReplyCelebration lunch
Beautiful setting for lunch however the price of the tasting menu does not match the service. Table was greasy spoon sticky which we asked to be cleaned before eating. A bit of a confused restaurant between being a cafe for tourists or somewhere lovely to eat…food was delicious if not a little heavy on all courses, service was amateur for the price. Resting on its laurels of where it is positioned in Edinburgh, has the potential to be amazing but let down by lack of staff enthusiasm. Go for the light lunch options, appreciate the amazing views and go somewhere else for fine dining.
Be the first to ReplyA very expensive mistake!
My son took his wife, his mother in law and me his mother to this restaurant on Mothering Sunday.
It was a very expensive mistake!
The chicken broth lacked seasoning, the mussels in cream were over salted, the hake main course was tasteless, contained bones and had a slimy skin.
I eat fish regularly and this was quite the worst I have had in a long time.
The accompanying vegetables were two types of potatoes, fondant & new that looked like they had been heated up in the oven, the sea vegetables were abit of a mystery.
We were not sure what they were, they were watery & tough.
The ox cheek was a tiny portion and again a flavourless dish.
The chocolate dessert was ok but too sweet & the cheese & biscuits were ok.
The service was good however we would never recommend this beautiful looking restaurant.
Fantastic setting equalled by food and service
Had lunch at the Lookout on Saturday and it was fantastic! The setting is amazing with views in every direction over the City, helped by it being a sunny day on Saturday no doubt! The food is excellent with very well balanced dishes, slightly on the small side, but plenty big enough given the quality. One slight gripe, the price of the wine is a little steep.
Service from a young and enthusiastic team very good and maitre’d Sam excellent. We will return
Super accommodating for dietary needs!
I have been to the Lookout a few times with my pretty specific dietary needs (lactose intolerant, pescatarian and now pregnant) and have been blown away every time by how accommodating the staff are. I often attend with my partner who can (and will) eat anything, but I never feel left out as a bespoke option is always provided and is always as delicious! Just make sure to let the Lookout know of any dietary needs you may have when you book :) Super friendly and warm service and incredible food. Our fave spot to bring guests for an Edinburgh breakfast!
Be the first to ReplyNice but trading off its views
Three of us visited the Lookout for breakfast for a special occasion. While the food was lovely and clearly high quality, it was still very expensive (£23 pp) for what it was. There are many other cafes in Edinburgh which offer an equally good or better breakfast for a cheaper price. While the staff were polite enough we felt like we were irritating them when we asked for top up’s etc. Given that it was a special occasion, we would have bought some fizz but we decided not to bother given these vibes! So while the breakfast was good, we wouldn’t go back. We really felt that the Lookout was trading off its excellent location and views. This was disappointing as we are fans of sister venue Gardener’s Cottage!
Be the first to ReplyPerfect romantic treat
We’d originally booked for their sister restaurant but were moved here - and so glad we were!!
The corner table with incredible views was the perfect setting for a romantic meal. The tasting menu was stunning with exquisite wine accompaniment. I’m gluten intolerant and this was absolutely no issue, I didn’t feel I missed out on anything.
The staff were welcoming and attentive, as well as knowledgeable.
A wonderful evening made all the more stunning by the wild windy weather outside!!
Food versus view and the food won.
First time fine ding since 2019 and I had forgotten how pleasant an experience it is. Yes there is a view, but it is Edinburgh. The food outstrips the view and I’ll be back as soon as I am able.
Be the first to ReplySo very disappointed
The view is fabulous but nothing you can’t get by simply going up Carlton hill. The breakfast is a rip off. You pay more for a continental breakfast there than a full Scottish breakfast in all of the 5 star establishments in Edinburgh. I was not, therefore, expecting shop bought brand orange juice; shop bought, cold and doughy croissants; a cereal bowl of fruit to share between us and for my tea to come in a cup not a pot!! I even think I was charged extra for my second cup of tea! We didn’t leave hungry but portion size is not generous. I don’t often post on Trip Advisor and felt compelled to here. Given Gardeners Cottage reputation and this Restuarant’s Michelin rating it has been an ambition to visit since ever it opened. So very disappointed.
Be the first to ReplySpectacular View!!
What a location!!! Glass windows from floor to ceiling, making the view of Edinburgh one of the best in the city!! Small and exclusive, the setting is worth the walk up Calton Hill!
Be the first to ReplyIt’s living on the views over Edinburgh .I will never go back you can’t park your car apart from the views it has nothi
Over priced the meal portions are terrible they are robbing the tourists. I will never go back it was one of the worst meals I have had go a long time. I won’t be recommending it to anyone
Be the first to ReplyOver priced and underwhelming
Restaurant was cold throughout the visit. They offered a fixed breakfast/brunch menu with no prices, but had asked for a £20 deposit per person when making a reservation. Offered croissants etc which were tough to taste suggesting they weren’t fresh. Going off menu was a bit of a chore but met with good service as the staff accommodated well. Coffee tasted poor, mixed fruit bowl had a fermented taste. Total price per person came to £29 for an orange juice, hot drink and continental breakfast. Double what most hotels would charge, the view and the staff service help, but the poor quality food, menu inflexibility and pricing policy make this one place to avoid, which is a shame.
