If you do not drink - do not visit!!!
The food was fine - hors d'oeuvres served, and our vegetarian party-member was forgotten, delicious turbot course, slightly ruined because the fish was full of large bones - the restaurant is dark so removing them isn't easy!!
Good, fun atmosphere - loud music. Should be the perfect Saturday night out.
The experience was ruined for me because there was literally ONE non-alcoholic option for me, other than the table water. I asked for a soft drink, and the waiter could offer me only the one cocktail or water... a very expensive evening, and I felt unwelcome and unimportant. Nothing for me to drink!!!! Noone should feel they are unimportant, or have not been thought of... £360 for 4 people, which included 2 wine pairings, and one person on water all night!! Gutted. As a recovering alcoholic it was an uncomfortable experience.
Average food, bizarre service
Had the fixed price menu with wine pairing, which with service was £100 a head.
Small portions and food that was solid but could frankly have been served anywhere - unremarkable. Wine pairing was OK but wines familiar and clearly inexpensive, with an unconvincing slap-dash voiceover.
Service completely bizarre and at times bordering on rude and dismissive throughout the meal without any warmth, before being asked to leave for the next table - having only just finished the fixed menu.
You can do much better for this price point in central London.
An absolute must!!
My my my what an incredible little place.
On arrival, the very unassuming front fit in with the local area and doesn’t stand out but a hidden gem is truly hidden inside.
The Maître D’ was fabulous when we arrived and sat us down even though we were early for our booking.
Our waitress was an absolute charmer and extremely knowledgeable.
We chose our dishes and also opted for the wine pairing which was divine. Each wine was carefully selected and matched the dish perfectly.
We asked several questions while we were sat down and got great answers both times.
The menu changes every few weeks so we definitely plan on returning in the future and look forward to it!
Can’t help but get carried away!
Delicious food. Really fun and exciting wine list. I loved the prix fixe simplicity so all our debate centred around the choice of wines from extensive list. We were extremely greedy, but had a terrific time.
Be the first to ReplyGood food in Hackney-style low lighting
The day after the BJ evening bombshell and the Sunday before LD2 strikes, we thought we should support a local restaurant. Laughing Heart has been on our to-do list for a while but had never got around to. We were sat on bar stools at a narrow counter facing back towards the street, very bar feeling, with ultra low lighting, the kind where I have to use the candle to see the menu like in a Dickensian drama.
The 3 course menu is short but it all looks good. My partner ended up choosing better than me. He had the duck pie followed by the sirloin - both hearty and excellent. My crab starter was both light/small and for me lacking the citrus seasoning it was described as having. My two bird roast main was tasty in a Christmas dinnerish sort of way but over salty. Both desserts were decent enough, the service prompt and staff friendly.
My Austrian white wine by the glass was also particularly good. Though at the end the total bill felt steepish for what we had.
Small menu but outstanding cooking and service
A limited menu but you’ll be happy anyway. The cooking is outstanding and if you choose either 3 or 4 course option you will leave feeling very satisfied. There’s an extensive and quite unusual wine list but it’s been chosen with great care. Best to let the server advise, as they are really well informed and ours had sourced many of the wines himself. The service is stand out; friendly, imperceptibly attentive and clearly passionate about the whole venture.
Be the first to ReplyTiny portions, uneven service, terrible wine, overpriced
We ate as a group, and were never shown a wine/price list.
They have a system. The waitress asks "what kind of wine do you like? we want you to have something really delicious that you will love".
I asked for a dry, flowery white wine.
They brought me a big glass with a small portion of sour, cloudy wine. They asked did I absolutely love it?
I said not really, since you ask. They insisted I try 2 more and in the end I just said it was fine and not to worry.
I was charged for all the glasses, and none of them cost under £10.
This happened to everyone, we all ordered a lot of glasses of wine and at the end the bill was the highest I've ever paid in a restaurant.
I had a terrible hangover the next day.
We had a set menu arranged for the group. One course was just a sharing plate of kimchee. Another was a plate of chicken wings. The end of the table near the front got quite a lot of food. At the back end of the table we got very little.
The attitude of the owner left as much of a sour taste in the mouth as the wine did.
Most dishes very good, tiny portio s
Would give this a 3.75/5. The standout dishes on the menu were the roasted Brussels sprouts (but offensively small portion for the price), the rabbit stew and the scallops. The pumpkin was a bit undercooked and not as interesting as the other dishes, and the fat on the duck dish we had was quite chewy. I do think they need to revisit some of their portion sizes for the prices they charge

We came her late looking for a nice meal, but unfortunately we where very disappointed in the food, either to salty, boring or burnt. We won’t come again. The atmosphere is really nice tho. The wine list was average.
Be the first to ReplyCreative food albeit small portions,
Hole in the wall just north of the Columbia Street flower market. The small menu has numerous deliciously creative elements. Portions (including the large mains) are relatively small. Unfortunately the signature Sichuan creme brulee was overly torched.
