Shakshuka on point
Finally, made it to Fat Hen after a few failed attempts. This place is so tiny that the only way to get a spot is to book it a few weeks in advance. The menu is pretty small but mighty. I am a sucker for hearty shakshuka, and Fat Hen delivers 100% here. My +1’s Alla Boscaiola looked delish too. Did not get to try their pastries this time around (those portions are generous!) but will come back for the cardamom bun. The only thing I wish was different is that cappuccino could’ve been drier…

Visited for breakfast while road tripping down the PCH. Very small place, luckily we arrived early because it started to get very busy when we were finishing up. Very cozy, relaxing, and small town atmosphere which was great. The service was fantastic! The staff was so very friendly, genuine and accommodating. The coffee was very well made and the food was just as good. I ordered the Dungeness crab Benedict with fingerling potatoes. Awesome!!! The small side of greens that came with my sons breakfast burger was boasting with flavor. His smash burger was great as well! There is nothing negative to say about the Fat Hen. Very welcoming establishment with quality food and drink. I can see where parking could become an issue but we had no trouble finding a spot on a side street.

Seen this place after going to Rosellini’s bakery and Delancey’s pizza the past couple of years. Finally decided to give it a try after seeing reviews. Unfortunately, my eggs Benedict with Black Forest ham was just OK. The ham was over cooked and hard to cut through the English muffin. The pouched eggs were cook nicely. The hollandaise was thick and not flavorful. My husband had the Shakshuka and thought it was just OK. The bread was good that came with it to soak up the sauce. The staff was great and attentive. Maybe will have to try something else.

The Fat Hen is a wonderful neighborhood cafe with a solid brunch menu. Tasty shakshuka, ricotta toast, coffee and mimosas.
Be the first to ReplyGreat breakfast place
We had a wonderful breakfast in this small place in Ballard. I had a the eggs Benedict and it was perfect. My German friend had the Alla Boscaiola which was very good and
priced well. I love the choice of potatoes or salad with your breakfast. I had a soy Mocha
that was by far the best I have had in Seattle. I will return next time I am in Seattle.
Great Salmon Benny
Title says it - really great Wild Salmon Eggs Benedict, the sauce was perfect and the breakfast potatoes are awesome. Really nice lively atmosphere and the staff are all lovely. Wish this was our local brunch place!
Be the first to ReplyGood food, decent service, fun atmosphere
I loved the wild salmon Benedict I had here. Good flavor and not too heavy on the sauce, but enough.I also snuck a bite of my friend's chicken sandwich with pimento cheese spread. The spread was really good.
There are tables for two to four, and then a communal table; we chose the latter and shared our table with others who were nice.
The menu is not expansive, but so much looked outstanding; I was in the mood for some local fish, so that's what I had.
Great breakfast, brunch, lunch menu
Great place, small but cozy with delicious organic food! Service is excellent & you won’t be disappointed. Quite busy as so good but put your name on the list & go for a stroll, or sit outside weather permitting.

I would refer to The Fat Hen as Sir Benedicts! They have mastered Eggs Benedicts and one is better than the other. Oh and then there is their Baked Eggs another tantalizing experience that keeps you wanting to come back and "eat through" the menu.
The environment is cozy and creates a sense of community, while finishing your breakfast off with some thing sweet ... oh my their cookies!
Excellent breakfast
The food at The Fat Hen is excellent. I was there a month or so ago and had the Crispy Chicken Sandwich, which is awesome: big, crunchy, spicy, in a brioche bun with chicken hanging out the sides. On that occasion, my daughter had the the Camicia: baked eggs in a tomato sauce with basil and mozzarella. She thought it was superb. We shared an order of the Crispy Fingerling Potatoes, which are just a little too thick to be potato chips, just a little too crispy to be french fries (besides not being julienned), and pleasantly salty. As we left at closing time, there was one scone left, and the waitress insisted that we take it, gratis. It was a cherry-almond scone, lightly crunchy on the outside and fluffy in the middle, and mouthwateringly good. She and the rest of the staff were pleasant and courteous.
Today my wife and son went with me to the restaurant. We had tried to get in a couple of weeks ago, but decided the wait was too long—30 min. This time we decided to stay, even though the wait was 40 min, and while we waited, my wife and son had a coffee and a chocolate. She got a scone to go with her coffee, the very same cherry almond scone, about which I had said nothing. She went to the car to wait, and when she got back when we were seated, she raved about the scone.
She and I had both the Eggs Benedict with pancetta, and my son had the Crispy Chicken Sandwich. The Eggs Benedict were excellent: perfectly poached eggs covered with creamy hollandaise on a perfectly toasted English muffin. The dish had a generous portion of pancetta (Italian bacon, more or less), which was nicely crisped and crunchy. I thought the fingerling potatoes were going to be too much, but we ate them all, and ordered more to take out. My wife ordered an orange juice, and as promised, it was fresh-squeezed, deliciously sweet, and whoever is buying their oranges knows his/her business.
There is a kid's menu on a chalkboard on the wall: Scrambled eggs (ham optional) is one choice; the other is granola. There were no kids there either time I went.
The restaurant is tiny—so tiny in fact that their menu carries this footnote: (Please be aware that due to our moderate size we are unable to accommodate parties larger than 6.) That's the paper menu that we got today; the menu of the website omits "moderate." It doesn't take reservations, and there is no room to wait inside. We went once when there was no wait; it was a weekday afternoon at 1PM, which is an hour before closing for the day at 2PM. Today was 2 days after a heavy snowfall for Seattle (4-8"), with the temp around freezing. We sat outside and waited, along with several other groups of 2 and 3 and 4, with a 40 min wait. There's a picture of us waiting, and another with others waiting. My wife was the smart one, and went to wait in the car. Was it worth the wait? Definitely. I'm sure there are other times of year where the wait could be quite grim: Seattle has 300 cloudy days a year, and rain on many of those days, not very much, a persistent drizzle.
The menu is limited to a dozen or so breakfast entrees, and a few other choices. If you need to stretch out while eating, this place is not for you. The tables are tiny, and whole dining area could fit in a one-car garage. The menu says it seats 25.
The streets in that part of Seattle—Ballard—are from an earlier, pre-automobile era, and off the main drag are one-way traffic. Parking is scarce. On a pleasant Sunday morning in August, though, it would be more than worth the wait, to sit out front and read the newspaper—or, more likely these days, the newsfeed on your phone. Or gossip.
Cute little spot for a leisurely and very Seattle breakfast/brunch
Charming little rustic breakfast place. Fits about 15 people. Good menu selection for a classic, slightly trendy brunch menu option. Great coffee.

What a lovely spot this is for a relaxing and yummy breakfast. Had the special of the day and was not disappointed. The egg bakes are beyond flavorful, filling, and reasonably priced. I thoroughly enjoyed my Iced Latte as well. The service was fantastic. They do a great job of seating you as quickly as they can and offer to start your drinks while you wait. I will definitely be back to this little cafe when I return to Seattle.
