The Drunken Duck Inn & Restaurant Ambleside Reviews from The Last Year
Very disappointing.
Having glanced through the drastically differing recent reviews it would be hard to assess this restaurant prior to your visit. Why do some people hate it and some love it? I am in the former camp. I don't like the decor; it feels cold and unloved. The menu is very limited, especially if you enjoy meat. Some of the food combinations don't work. The spring salad starter is not enhanced by 2 slices of sour dough, especially as good bread is served before the starters. The pigeon starter was very tough and frankly dull. Most people around us ordered the venison main as the only other meat choice was rabbit terrine but the venison loin, although tasty, was not improved by the accompaniment of sour cabbage. £65 (plus 10% service charge) for the three courses seemed rather expensive for this veggie dominated menu, especially as we were still hungry when we left. Don't try to cancel your restaurant booking less than 72 hours before your visit or you will be asked to pay £45 per person! Not friendly. Very disappointing.
How to kill what was a good restaurant!
We booked for dinner on July 4th..the only choiceof meat on the menu was venison, rabbi or pigeon. No specials no standard steaks for anyone not liking game. Unbelievable. The venison was good so was the pigeon starter but the rabbit stew was a complete disaster served in deconstructed form and lacking any flavour. Not a stew. I think This chef is bent on closing the restaurant through his crazy menu choice with no options. Unheard of. I feel really let down because I have been to this restaurant quite a few times in the past and it was good. Add to that the prices are really top. I urge people not to go until they get a new chef. By the way the beer is very good indeed and to be fair there were three vegetarian options which is unusual.
A BIG rip off!.
A very poor menu selection with rabbit, venison and wood pigeon being the only meats available. We stopped for a light bite and ordered rabbit tacos with a side of chips to share. £22 for the tacos and £9 for the small bowl of chips.... yes £9!!!! The sauces with the tacos were really bland with the salsa verde having no zing at all. Not a place I'd recommend though the beer was good and brewed on site.
Not a foodie destination. Great views nice pub.
We planned to stay here for evening meal as a destination. Unfortunately I would not say to stay here for food. Great location. Quiet. Booked a standard room but upgraded as the room was small and next to the hotel kitchen fan. The room we had was great a suite with brilliant views. The room was lovely. On the downside no water provided, a bottle of tap water would have been appreciated. No tea or coffee in the room again would have been appreciated for the price. Staff were great and we did order coffee in the morning (phone didn’t work in the room so we had to ring from mobile). I think we were charged but the bill didn’t break down beverages but I’m assuming so. Evening meal for the price I would not have again. Very average. Not worth £65 for 3 courses. Having stayed at a local hotel and Sunday lunch was £36 for two courses and was one of the best I’ve had I’m not sure how they justify the price. So I would not recommend it for food. I don’t like to give a bad review but the food was lacking. For the price of food and the price of room I would expect more. Couldn’t fault the staff and service.
Disappointed!
This was so disappointing in many ways. The service and ambience are fine. However, the food was lacking any kind of flavour. The artichoke starter was bland, the rabbit was not in the least enhanced by the juice. Why was there not a light gravy for both the rabbit and venison (which was cooked well). The venison was served with over-sized french fries which i think is a questionable choice. And it's VERY expensive!
Terrible food and no atmosphere...avoid!
We've been coming to the Drunken Duck for well on 20 years and it's always a lunchtime stop whenever we are in the Lakes....but not anymore! I booked a table for Friday lunchtime as it's always been very busy then. When we got there the dining room was virtually empty. The menu was awful, I had the beef and ale pie, the pastry was overcooked and I could not find any taste of ale in it. Vegetable selection was just green beans, undercooked. As the menu is so bizarre (no fish?) My wife plumped for a vegetable pie, celeriac. It was dry and had no taste. It was served with ribbons of carrot...undercooked. I had a pint of beer and my wife a cordial...no starters and no pud. This came to £70! No wonder the place was empty, people have voted with their feet. It used to be such a great place but sadly no more. The decor in the dining rooms are badly done and there is no atmosphere, it used to be so jolly.....wouldn't recommend it to anyone!
Uninspiring stay
The room was small and pleasantly furnished, no bottled water provided and no tea and coffee making facilities, no robes or slippers, all of which could have been expected at £275 per night. We were offered coffee on arrival, but charged for it. Breakfast was pre order the night before and only average, only poached eggs as egg offering and no sausage. Only cereal was granola with rhubarb compote , no other continental offering. Fortunately we had dinner elsewhere as the evening menu was not inspiring and the only other couple at breakfast where making a complaint to the manager about the dinner.
Great Country Pub
Stopped by for a pub lunch and we were very happy. Not many choices on the menu but we both went for the steak pie and we weren’t disappointed! Great choice of locally brewed pints too! Can easily recommend The Drunken Duck if you’re in the area!
The drunken duck is a favorite of our friend who has come
The drunken duck is a favorite of our friend who has come here for 40 years, starting with golf buddies, then with family and best of all to celebrate weddings, and great moments. Relax here, the staff is ready to make this luxury even better with whatever you need! Directions to many local hikes or hot coffee on the picnic tables. So much fun to have, there are gardens, strolls, patios and quiet libraries too. This is the most beautiful place I've ever stayed because I can get some rest, unwind and enjoy the great outdoors. Yesterday there was a local marathon- yes!- great runners charged past into the local town of Ambleside. Hikers and dog lovers are here too. National parks close by... what a get-away we are having!!
It’s gone downhill - hoping for a turnaround
I’ve dined at the Drunken Duck 5 times in as many years, and until now it has always been a brilliant experience. The setting continues to be lovely, but the food has entirely lost its lustre. This all began to make sense when we were informed at the end of the meal that the chef who had helmed the kitchen for 15+ years has recently left. The new chef has taken favourites off the menu (goodbye venison bourguignon suet pudding) and replaced them with rather run of the mill dishes. The Jerusalem artichoke starter was unsatisfying and undercooked. The steak pie was mediocre - filling was fine, pastry was overcooked, and plain steamed veg on the side was reminiscent of a chain carvery. I will give them some credit as everything tasted homemade, if rather uninteresting. I really hope that the new chef brings back some of the classic DD dishes, introduces some more interesting ones, or the management correct course with new kitchen leadership. We love the Drunken Duck and fear its decline would spell a great loss for the Lakes!
A Lunch Not To Be Repeated
Very disappointing. We booked for lunch last Friday 22 March expecting a delicious meal (my brother had eaten here a couple of years ago and highly recommended it). The person I spoke to on the phone was so pleasant and as far as I could see online there was an a la carte menu with a wide choice. Coming up from London for the weekend, we were really looking forward to it. The reality was very different. Only 5 choices for mains on the menu: two vegan; a steak pie which looked as if it had been bought from a caterer, warmed up, plonked on the plate with beans so al dente it was difficult to cut them with a knife and thick tasteless chips; a faux Mexican taco filled as far as I remember with mushrooms; and an empanada filled with I can't remember what - it wasn't worth remembering. Each item cost £22 for food that probably should have been nearly half of that. The service lacked warmth and the dining room felt bare and cold, unlike the rest of the inn where the decor was much more friendly, interesting and in good taste. What a pity.

Great Service - amazing dinner!!
Read about the site in NYT and bought a reservation at Mother Wolf in LA 2 days later. Worked great and the food was amazing!!!
Worked perfectly!
Got the reservation (that I couldn't get anywhere else) and was able to entertain a group of friends at the infamous Bern's Steakhouse.
Got into Nobu Malibu
Wonderful! My parents are visiting and we have wanted to go to Nobu Malibu for years. I tried getting a reservation myself but it was next to impossible. So glad I was able to buy a reservation on appointment trader for a decent price!
Very easy
Was very hesitant going into this experience but am glad to say that it worked out very well ! will definitely use appointment trader in the future
Fabulous Lunch
I was veeeeeerry skeptical that this would work, particularly at a restaurant as hard to get into as Nobu Malibu, and it was perfect! We had lunch outside on the patio and it was fabulous!
Great reviewer team
Just wanted to take a second to shout out the reviewer team. Even though they probably review hundreds of listings and bids a day, they still take the time to leave great comments and respond relatively quickly. Thanks!
Incredible
I got a reservation to Don Angie, which I've been trying to book for weeks! I am very happy with this service.
Best platform out there!
Super simple, easy, and fast to secure reservations for hard-to-get restaurants and locations!
This app is life changing
This app has opened my world up to so many wonderful new experiences I would never have the chance to have without access to this awesome app! 10/10!
Worked perfectly
Was a little nervous at first but was pleased to see that the booking went through flawlessly.
Highly recommended.
Success on Short Notice
Was able to snag an indoor table at Don Angie through an absolutely seamless worry-free process.
Worked perfectly, thank you!
This is a crazy holiday season in NYC and I was very pleasantly surprised to see that AppointmentTrader works! Will be using again!

Worked so well! I was a bit nervous, but everything went very smoothly. purchased the reservation, and got into the restaurant seamlessly.
Love this app!
So glad I came across this app :)
Quick table in Miami
I didn’t have my hopes high as it was a party of 4. In 24 hours I had a carbone reservation available! I was very happy as my family really wanted to come here
Prime time, great meal
So easy and had a prime time which I can never seem to get on normal res apps. So worth it
Got impossible NYC res

Worked perfectly to get into Carbone. So delighted
perfect
Worked well, got me into a restaurant with no availability
I was skeptical, and I still don't really know how they managed to find this hard-to-find reservation, but it was a win-win from my point of view, and I'll use this service again.
Last minute reservation for Delilah Las Vegas
Got a last minute reservation, dinner for 2 at Delilah Las Vegas: super impressed! The process was simple, transaction seamless. We had an amazing time! Couldn’t be happier! 😍
It works!
Ok at this point I've attended a reservation purchased on AT by a friend and sold a reservation personally. Both worked pretty smoothly, nothing sketchy about it. A few areas for improvement including a way to more directly communicate between buyers and sellers, but the app always seems to be in development. AT customer support is really(!) responsive and helpful too if you have questions!
Money transfer
As a seller, I like the fact i have the ability now to transfer money out of my AT account and into a bank account. Makes getting the money much easier then the process before.
Love this app
Got to go to places otherwise unreachable
Easy Access
Very easy to get into one of the hardest restaurants to reserve in New York.
Payouts Blocked Because of Sell Through Rate
Does anyone know how AT plans to handle cases where a seller is quitting the platform but has a sell through rate <25%? The error message I got said to fill more bids or find other ways to increase the rate.
Is AT really going to block sellers from withdrawing their money? Especially revenue made before the sell through rate was introduced??
Tune into NBC News - Top Story Tonight 7:40p ET
Let’s go. Get more people placing bids!
I will give you 50% of ALL of my PROFITS if you teach me how to make profits?
LOL. Thank you The New Yorker.
Appointment
Transferring reservations is not supported in AT. Why not just use the name in the AT screenshot?
Buyers interested in Bern's Steakhouse: PLEASE READ
Same goes for 4 Charles and I Sodi
Prepaid Reservation Fee
Agreed. Ultimately not addressing this month after month is clearly resulting in a drop in certain venue’s rankings & sales.
Congrats on 3 mil
🍾🍾🍾🍾🍾🍾🧨🧨🧨 now on to 30 mill!
Need to cancel a bid, not getting a response… how do I do it?
Click on "Take off the Market Option" in your portfolio
Working on your bid?
Your bid has been “matched” with a reservation. From the time a reservation has been located, the seller of the reservation must connect with moderator to give transfer information for reservation. If the seller;however, does NOT respond to reservation transfer, then your bid is reprocessed and returns to the first step, which is connecting your request to a reservation.
Process after bid is accepted.
Hey @EvocativeFold67, welcome to appointmenttrader! Once the reservation is in your portfolio, you definitely own the timeslot, the review team would not have approved the trade if the reservation wasn't confirmed - so you are going :-) Judging from your post you bid today and are going tomorrow - don't worry as long as you initiated the name transfer, you are good - the transfer service has to work with the opening hours of the reservation team of the respective venue. You will likely see the transfer confirmation a couple hours before your reservation time.
Where do the Reservations on AppointmentTrader come from?
Mostly from people who don't need their reservations or appointments any longer. AT has no relationship with places listed and acts as a platform connecting buyers and sellers making sure that listed reservations are real and that privacy is not compromised when transacting.
What happens if my bid expires unanswered?
Hey @FluffyStar64, thanks for the question! When you place your bid the amount gets transferred in a deposit account, the second you either cancel your bid or a few minutes after the bid expires the funds are moved back into your main account from where you can refund it to your payment method or use for other transactions.
