The Dabney Washington Reviews from The Last Year
Wife’s 35th Bday Dinner
I would like to think we all like to spoil our significant others for their Birthdays-I took my wife to dinner at The Dabney and we were amazed by the 8 course dinner and classic wine pairing. Every single employee was helpful from the moment we walked in the door. They were on top of their game and made this experience hard to beat in the “best restaurant meal/experiences” we have had to date or will have in the future. The Manager on Duty was extremely helpful in discussing the food and wine, the kitchen staff were exceptional, numerous servers took care of us-my receipt says Nicolette was “ours”. I can’t say enough for this place and how much I enjoyed their dedication to sourcing the best ingredients and trying to keep the farms and purveyors within a small radius of the restaurant. My favorite item on the dinner was the course of the “sugar toads”-iykyk. Thanks again Dabney Crew!!
We had the 3-course dinner menu.
The food was ok-- All the dishes were grilled American-Asian fusion dishes that were pretty interesting but kinda salty. The vibes were nice though (good for date night) and the staff were friendly!
It befuddles my mind how The Dabney is the #1 restaurant in
It befuddles my mind how The Dabney is the #1 restaurant in the DC area according to The Washingtonian. My partner and I dined at the restaurant this evening, and spent nearly $1000 for the meal plus a shared wine pairing. This was a real splurge for us. I'm glad to say that the wine pairing was the highlight. The meal was an absolute lowlight. The main course, duck three ways, was a let down. One of the ways the duck was prepared made it completely dried out and inedible. Save your money. Go somewhere else.
Slow and pretentious - star payment but not star food
Slow and pretentious - some excellent dishes but others much less so. Over three hours - ie, a bit less than 3 courses an hour - yet, several courses needed little preparation at the time of serving. Best by far the main duck course - well conceived and executed. Wine "pairing" was frankly a wine tasting - 5 mildly interesting wines in ungenerous pours that added up to one single glass of wine (at $125?). Perhaps deserves a good rating but not a star for sure - although the price was for the star, not the food or ambience - and well below the standards of other one-star places.
Food and service were impeccable.
We went for a special birthday dinner. I set my expectations low as a few recent fine dining experiences did not live up to the hype for me (Tail Up Goat was underwhelming for me). The restaurant was bustling but not loud which was a plus for me - I could have a conversation without raising my voice. I ordered a Chardonnay which they didn't have- then a Red Zinfandel which they were also out of; so it wasn't starting off very well. Then the sommelier came and made everything right - a complimentary glass of something sparkling and a great recommendation that we enjoyed. I also appreciated that he didn't try to upsell. The food was delicious and beautiful. Everything was perfectly seasoned and just the right amount. The menu rotates often so whatever next special occasion brings us back we aren't likely to encounter the exact same food but I hope that they continue to treat guests with those pillowy soft delicious sweet potato rolls. Dinner for two was not cheap. With a decent bottle of wine, tax and tip, dinner was over $700 - or a month's worth of groceries for me. But all in all I was pleased with the experience and would gladly return.
I'm came here before the pandemic before their Michelin
I'm came here before the pandemic before their Michelin rating and glad they are still standing. Not only are they standing, the Dabney has reinvented itself with its tasting menu. This time around, their feature of duck was amazing (I distinctly remember their fish servings from the first time I visited). Eating duck that was prepared 4 different ways felt like an adventure. In my opinion, their best was the duck breast with caramelized citrus - simple and delicious. The caviar bite on pecan cookie was intense, flavorful, and memorable with all its multilayered goodness lingering even after it was eaten. The foie gras paired well with onion honey on warm roll, the parsnip was on point. I also got their reserve wine pairing which enhanced the flavors and overall experience. The Dabney has become my go-to for friends and out-of-owners visiting DC.
The thought and effort that goes into the menu, service,
The thought and effort that goes into the menu, service, and customer experience is unmatched. There is no need to make any difficult menu decisions here as you are assigned a tasting menu and you can specify any allergy accommodations (which they are very attentive to and mindful of). This place is most simply put...an experience. Before you even make it to your seat, the host takes your coat and introduces you to the chef who personally thanks you for coming out and offers a warm mushroom broth (it was amazing). You have a "main" waiter but this is a full team operation. Each course is described to you by someone new it seemed. Visually, everything was stunning; i can't imagine how difficult it must be to create these presentations. On the taste side, it was a carousel of extremes. The venison was the best bite of my life and the oyster rivaled the worst. I genuinely think I may have got a bad one. Nevertheless, the meal went on. I have to say, they really nailed the dessert items here and I wasn't expecting that. The sorbet and toffee pudding was amazing. Just when you think the meal was over they brought out assorted pastries and sweets. This place really does little courtesies like that nicely. After you pay, they even give you a surprise for breakfast the next day. These are the things that truly make the experience fun and worth while. **If the tasting menu isn't your speed, you can opt for the bar and choose from a list of dishes** With all this said, it was the biggest bill of my life. To be honest I'm in a bit of in a pickle for finances after eating here. I think if someone else paid I'd give it 5 stars. I'm not a restaurant owner or chef so I can't comprehend the cost of keeping a place like this in motion. It was a great experience but when I sit here days later and remember what it felt like to see that total price....i don't know.
Slow
Service was friendly but slow. Drinks took ages and the bar was not crowded. Martini was not great. Food took a while too. Food was good but small portions. Prices were too high for such small portions. Overall not awful but not exceptional.
I waited WAY TOO LONG to post my review of this place.
It's been several years, but I still have the photos to prove it. I just have little recollection of what the dishes were called, and since the chef rotates the menu regularly, it's doubtful many of these items are still here. (See pictures below) What I do remember was that the entire experience left me feeling like it was all a dream. The food was fresh and I tasted flavors that were unique and unexpected. The jam/chutney with the crusty bread was outstanding. The service was kind and attentive. Desiree made recommendations and since I was on a business trip, I was able to splurge a little more than I would have on my own. The ambience was cozy and comfortable, and all the movement in the kitchen made it feel like a show. I would highly recommend.
Worth the Money if you're used to spending it like this
The Dabney is one of a kind and we're happy we dined there. Having said that, I'm not sure any restaurant is worth $250 pp (before tip) but that could be because I'm just not used to spending that much. I love tasting menus and that is what The Dabney offers. The service was perfect. I had one of the best cocktails of my life - Called Man on a Wire. The food was wonderful except for one sausage course (but then I'm not a big sausage fan). The restaurant is a bit hidden so it was wierd for us to walk around a dark parking lot and down a little alley. Could be our Uber driver just didn't know where to let us out.
Perfection in the District
One could start by highlighting the incredible flavors in the dishes - or the delicious cocktails crafted with local spirits, or the chic ambiance of the bricked space with the open kitchen - all world class - but the highlight is the exceptional service. Attentive, patient, practiced yet authentic- the DABNEY delivers. From the bartender creating an off the menu cocktail to meet tastes (which was incredible) or the presentation of oysters farmed by a former DABNEY alum, this is by far the best dining experience in DC. Cannot recommend strongly enough.
How have i not reviewed the Dabney yet?!??!! i talk about
How have i not reviewed the Dabney yet?!??!! i talk about this place once a week!! My husband and I went here for dinner and it was absolutely amazing. Every single course tasted so good and in my opinion it is so much better than Alinea. The restaurant has more cozy vibes, the staff was great, and that food, again, AMAZING!!! I love being able to see the open concept kitchen and seeing how everything worked. The drinks were also great too, and if you wanted to go somewhere after Death & Co. is right next door. Loved this place!!!!!
I came to DC over the summer for some sightseeing and some
I came to DC over the summer for some sightseeing and some general celebration of my birthday. I ranked all of the restaurants in town using an algorithm/decision-making-tree that I came up with. And The Dabney popped up as one of the premier must-go places. So I made my reservations and showed up on time and got seated in the very beautiful main dining area. We had the perfect view of the open kitchen right next us, so we got to watch the well-oiled machine the entire time. So many tables going through course after course, a guy with a dry erase board keeping track of all the moving pieces, all the meats seemingly being cooked with only wood and fire. Really great stuff. And the service? Come on. We had multiple people that waited on us, each being their own cog in the machine of the service presentation. We never wanted for anything. And the conversation was very pleasant and seemed authentic. Right down to the very end of the night to when one of the hosts checked on us to see how we were getting back in the pouring rain. So anyway, I can't talk about all of the courses served in the well orchestrated show that we went through, but I will give some thoughts and notes. I love how this place, and many other places, are highlighting and celebrating local ingredients. Where our food comes from is very cool to know, and I'm glad that they are supporting local, small businesses rather than buying a pack of 1,000 frozen oysters from another country. The second snack of the night really hit that point with lamb from the Shenandoah area stuffed into a mint leaf that came from Kentucky. Very nice. I also liked how the courses got progressively bigger in size, from the snacks to the actual courses, to the main event. Fried squash blossom. Enough said. There's no vessel more fun to eat something from. One of the courses had us take a fried corn tortilla and smash it to make our own tortilla chips to eat the rest of the dish with. That was fun! And of course, the main event. From a local farm, we got Autumn Olive Farm Pork served in a few different ways. It was all laid out to us at once and then we got free range of the feast. The Sorghum Butter they gave us for that Cornbread was insane out of this world delicious. And the Scrapple they put that Caviar on top of? Wow. It was all just so fun and delicious. We finished off with three dessert courses, all good. I feel like I've said a lot, but also a lot of nothing. The bottom line is that the place is very good. They select high quality, local ingredients, and present them in a beautiful, delicious way. The only thing is that a place like this needs to send you home with some post-dinner munchies. That's all that was missing. Not sure if I'll ever be back, but will certainly recommend this place to everyone I know who heads to DC.
This use to be my favorite go to restaurant in DC, but I'm
This use to be my favorite go to restaurant in DC, but I'm sad at what it's become. Prior to Covid it was an all a la carte restaurant and it was delicious and reasonable. Not cheap but for $250 or so a couple could go there and have a great night out. After Covid they moved to a tasting menu. At first it was $75 per person. Not bad. Now it's $235 a person before you even have one drink. I get that a lot has changed in the industry, and I get how things and people have to adapt. I also know it's possible to eat some semblance of a la carte in the bar. Still, it just feels like a total ripoff and I'm sad
Pros: No matter what anyone says, Michelin Stars are
Pros: No matter what anyone says, Michelin Stars are well-earned. The food was bonkers delicious. The dining room was huge and open and warm and inviting and the kitchen was also wide open so we got to see them make every single course like a well oiled machine. Service was impeccable. Many different people for many different functions throughout our meal. One of the major themes that ran through the meal was quality, local sourcing and using those same ingredients in multiple different ways. That soft shell crab was one of the best things I have ever eaten. Cons: Literally not a single one. There was a even a nice covered patio for us to wait for our Lyft out of the pouring rain. Tips: These are small bite courses, so really take your time with them, chew slowly, talk, drink, and converse in between bite. It really was a lovely time.
Such a good dinner!
We were so excited to get a reservation at The Dabney. We were seated just a table from the counter where the chef worked and it was perfect. The night we went the focus was on a local pork farmer and seasonal crab. Each course was delicious. I could have done without the scrapple course but that is a personal preference. The staff was all kind and knowledgeable. We will defiantly return. The sommelier was so knowledgeable and listened to what we liked and picked wonderful choice for each of us. We will return!

Worked perfectly!
Got the reservation (that I couldn't get anywhere else) and was able to entertain a group of friends at the infamous Bern's Steakhouse.
Got into Nobu Malibu
Wonderful! My parents are visiting and we have wanted to go to Nobu Malibu for years. I tried getting a reservation myself but it was next to impossible. So glad I was able to buy a reservation on appointment trader for a decent price!
Very easy
Was very hesitant going into this experience but am glad to say that it worked out very well ! will definitely use appointment trader in the future
Fabulous Lunch
I was veeeeeerry skeptical that this would work, particularly at a restaurant as hard to get into as Nobu Malibu, and it was perfect! We had lunch outside on the patio and it was fabulous!
Great reviewer team
Just wanted to take a second to shout out the reviewer team. Even though they probably review hundreds of listings and bids a day, they still take the time to leave great comments and respond relatively quickly. Thanks!
Incredible
I got a reservation to Don Angie, which I've been trying to book for weeks! I am very happy with this service.
Best platform out there!
Super simple, easy, and fast to secure reservations for hard-to-get restaurants and locations!
This app is life changing
This app has opened my world up to so many wonderful new experiences I would never have the chance to have without access to this awesome app! 10/10!
Worked perfectly
Was a little nervous at first but was pleased to see that the booking went through flawlessly.

Quick table in Miami
I didn’t have my hopes high as it was a party of 4. In 24 hours I had a carbone reservation available! I was very happy as my family really wanted to come here

Worked well, got me into a restaurant with no availability
I was skeptical, and I still don't really know how they managed to find this hard-to-find reservation, but it was a win-win from my point of view, and I'll use this service again.
Last minute reservation for Delilah Las Vegas
Got a last minute reservation, dinner for 2 at Delilah Las Vegas: super impressed! The process was simple, transaction seamless. We had an amazing time! Couldn’t be happier! 😍
It works!
Ok at this point I've attended a reservation purchased on AT by a friend and sold a reservation personally. Both worked pretty smoothly, nothing sketchy about it. A few areas for improvement including a way to more directly communicate between buyers and sellers, but the app always seems to be in development. AT customer support is really(!) responsive and helpful too if you have questions!
Money transfer
As a seller, I like the fact i have the ability now to transfer money out of my AT account and into a bank account. Makes getting the money much easier then the process before.
Love this app
Got to go to places otherwise unreachable
Easy Access
Very easy to get into one of the hardest restaurants to reserve in New York.
Whose name will my reservation be under when I arrive at the venue?
It can be under your name or a name you choose! Some reservation offers already include the AppointmentTrader Transfer Service which will transfer the reservation in to your name. If its not included you can add it on after buying the reservation for a small fee. One thing on that though: As many reservations become available at last minute, taking a reservation in someone else name is quick and great for privacy. Most reservations on AT are listed with a virtual phone number, so all you need to do is present the phone number at the hostess stand and you are good to go!

LOL. Thank you The New Yorker.
Appointment
Transferring reservations is not supported in AT. Why not just use the name in the AT screenshot?
Buyers interested in Bern's Steakhouse: PLEASE READ
Same goes for 4 Charles and I Sodi
Prepaid Reservation Fee
Agreed. Ultimately not addressing this month after month is clearly resulting in a drop in certain venue’s rankings & sales.
Congrats on 3 mil
🍾🍾🍾🍾🍾🍾🧨🧨🧨 now on to 30 mill!
Need to cancel a bid, not getting a response… how do I do it?
Click on "Take off the Market Option" in your portfolio
Working on your bid?
Your bid has been “matched” with a reservation. From the time a reservation has been located, the seller of the reservation must connect with moderator to give transfer information for reservation. If the seller;however, does NOT respond to reservation transfer, then your bid is reprocessed and returns to the first step, which is connecting your request to a reservation.
Process after bid is accepted.
Hey @EvocativeFold67, welcome to appointmenttrader! Once the reservation is in your portfolio, you definitely own the timeslot, the review team would not have approved the trade if the reservation wasn't confirmed - so you are going :-) Judging from your post you bid today and are going tomorrow - don't worry as long as you initiated the name transfer, you are good - the transfer service has to work with the opening hours of the reservation team of the respective venue. You will likely see the transfer confirmation a couple hours before your reservation time.
Where do the Reservations on AppointmentTrader come from?
Mostly from people who don't need their reservations or appointments any longer. AT has no relationship with places listed and acts as a platform connecting buyers and sellers making sure that listed reservations are real and that privacy is not compromised when transacting.
What happens if my bid expires unanswered?
Hey @FluffyStar64, thanks for the question! When you place your bid the amount gets transferred in a deposit account, the second you either cancel your bid or a few minutes after the bid expires the funds are moved back into your main account from where you can refund it to your payment method or use for other transactions.
