Reliable, Manly, Friendly and good food! Restaurants hidden in strip malls don’t get my immediate attention. I would have bypassed Chef’s Table buried in such a mall in Rocklin, if not for some recommendations of friends. Before going there, I checked TripAdvisor. It is currently rated #1 in Rocklin. Three Sisters had that ranking last time I looked. But Chef’s Table has taken the lead. This is a dinner house with lunch served only Thursday through through Saturday starting at noon. They close Sundays and Mondays. It’s a macho cast of characters, all men. They laugh and have fun, performing admirably. We came for my Frau’s 78th birthday. Our lunchtime server was Nicolaus, a self-proclaimed mix of Italian, German and Irish. He saw we brought a celebratory bottle of Pouilly-Fuisse and he had the cork removed and the bottle cooling in an ice bucket before we could say Nicolaus. The corkage fee was only $15. Their wine bottles tend to be pricey, running from $45 for a South African blend to a $400 Opus One cabernet. So bringing your own special wine is the way to go. There is nothing pretentious here. A single sheet menu is not laminated, and is printed on one side only . This simple food listing suffices for both lunch and dinner. The menu is quite disorganized with burgers mixed with such choices as oyster shooters and pork tacos. The decor is quite simple. A group of taller tables are in the cocktail lounge. Our seating was close to other tables, full of youngish eaters and drinkers. Fancy wardrobes might include colored t-shirts. All were polite and some wished my wife a happy birthday. My only complaint is they don’t take reservations. I could picture a long wait on a busy night. It was even quite full on our Thursday mid-afternoon visit. My prime rib French dip ($21) was delicious—and half of it followed me home. Gretchen said her grilled peach burger ($18) –can you believe it? was a delight. It’s a creative menu, not extensive. I know they offer dessert but they had no space on the menu to list them. They have oodles of craft beer offerings. The web page is alive with action and includes the basics. We had a good first impression and plan to return. The place is clean and parking is ample. Nice neighborhood. Casual and relaxing it is. Not cheap.
