I am a sucker for hotels with historic character so staying at The Beekman for a recent weekend in NYC was a true jackpot. Seriously, I have been to 45 countries and this is now in my Top 5 all-time favorite hotels. The lobby, common areas and bar are all stunning, with a style I can probably best describe as "modern Victorian" (note: not a designer-approved term). The exposed ironwork and original (or period correct) tilework really gives the hotel a late nineteenth century feel. Thankfully the rooms seem fresh and updated while retaining an art deco vibe that really works; our room was spacious and had a great bathroom and comfortable bed. The Bar Room is very inviting with the large bookcases giving a very cozy vibe; the cocktails don't come cheap but they are very well made. The only downside of the bar is it's so good that non-guests are a common fixture, so reserving a table or arriving early evening to scope out a spot at the bar is highly recommended. The staff was consistently gracious and accommodating so no complaints there (at check in I couldn't help but overhear one of the front desk workers give an absolute master class in patiently dealing with a clearly over-entitled guest...you know the type). Room rates are not inexpensive, but this is lower Manhattan and I believe that the value is there and the property compares favorably to comparable options (though in terms of character, there aren't many comparable options). Temporary tip as of this review: a building is under construction across Nassau street, so rooms on that side will experience noise; light sleepers should inquire when booking (earplugs are an easy remedy).
