A chilled and intimate Saturday social lunch with my eldest son.
A truly exemplary experience at the jewel in my Liverpool’s cuisine crown delivered by Paul and his outstanding team! Chef Patron Askew’s brigade, front of house outfit and their whole approach to the most unassuming commitment to excellence just blows me away every time I visit. There’s no pretentiousness; none of that over-familiarity of lingering too long in one’s company… just an incredibly savvy group of professionals who know when to engage and when to simply deliver their spectacular fare, step back and allow their guests to enjoy their offerings in their own company while always remaining discretely on hand to attend to one’s every whim. The food and drink on offer was, as ever, unrivalled in their sumptuousness; the whole visit and dining experience was an absolute dream; and the team’s attentiveness to all that we needed was simply the best my city has to offer! How has this wonderful oasis not yet received the ultimate acknowledgement of its brilliance in the shape of a Michelin star!? Thank you so much to Paul, Alex, Isabel, Kyle and the whole team for looking after us so wonderfully well. Hope to see you all again soon. Stuart & Ben Fitzgerald
Be the first to ReplyOutstanding, great food, amazing atmosphere
Had the pleasure to visit the Art School restaurant last night. The welcome I received from the staff was pf the highest quality. A very warm welcome in what was a very miserable day with the weather. Our waitress was very knowledgeable of the comprehensive menu and was more than happy to talk my guests and me through each option. Once our decisions were made we were then offered the complementing wine with our meal choices. The meal arrived and the presentation of each meal was an artwork and looked amazing, and tasted even better. I visited the restaurant for a business dinner and we managed to eat some delicious food and conduct our meeting in the great setting. After our meal we visited the cellar bar and we all agreed a great space and a place to certainly return when the weather improves. Overall it was a great experience and a place that seems a hidden gem but certainly a restaurant I will return to again, for sure.

Beautiful building, very small reception area. Asked if we could have a drink in the cellar bar, told it was full. Drinks at the bar were good, chefs snacks brought (very good) but we were not offered champagne as per the menu. Thought it might come to the table when we sat down, it didn’t. Food was excellent, although I feel that the beef main with a £5 supplement was very small. My wife had the fish of the day, very good. Cheese course disappointing, the slivers of cheese were tiny and one of them included the rind and a very very small amount of cheese. Dessert course good. Atmosphere very ‘clinical’, no ambient music until very late on. Left us listening to everyone else’s conversations for most of the time we were there. Waiting staff okay, I was left with the tablet for the drinks on the side of the table for the entire evening. This place could be very good, but there were a few details which let it down. Don’t let 10 years on the Liverpool restaurant scene lead to complacency. Not sure I’d hurry back, we were potentially interested in a private dining booking for 20+ but I think we could do better. Good luck for the next 10 years, some attention to detail would work wonders!

Another wonderful meal at the Art School celebrating our 37th Wedding Anniversary. I consider the Art school to be the best restaurant in Liverpool - great location, great interior, amazing food and first class service from all the staff - I could not fault anything
Be the first to ReplyOne more time at The Art School
Six years had passed since the previous experience in this restaurant and I really wanted to go back, taking advantage of my presence in Liverpool for the Grand National meeting. Unfortunately prices have changed, inflation is also biting in the UK, but fortunately the "Prix Fixe" proposal remains which allows - at a reasonable price - a more popular menu but also a brief overview of their cuisine. Amuse bouche a green bean soup with mint served with their bread and focaccia and butter combo. To start we chose a souffle of "wild garlic" (wild garlic in Italian), spinach leaves, blue cheese, leeks and Dijon sauce: exceptional. Just as excellent is the quality of the North Sea black cod with miso, rice and prawns, green beans, onions and red chicory. Dessert, a trio of delights including macarons, chocolate cake and blueberry cheesecake. Great wine list, we chose by the glass, starting with the Italian Prosecco, continuing with the great curiosity of the English bubbles, namely a Brut reserve Henners, coming from East Sussex vineyards. From California the (red) wine for dessert. Finally, at the end of the meal we also treated ourselves to the Espresso Martini. Attentive and important service, for a lunch to remember

The ambiance of the place resembled that of a gathering for spiritual communication. The quality of service provided was satisfactory, and the dishes served in the seven-course vegetarian meal were, to put it mildly, lacking in flavor. I am unable to identify any commendable aspects to mention.

The food, wine, staff and atmosphere are all first class at the Art School. We had the taster menu which was amazing. The wine was great. It was immaculately clean. Great value for money and I would certainly recommend this place if you are thinking about booking it. We had a great time.
Be the first to ReplyAmazing
We had the fixed price lunch which was absolutely fantastic. We were greeted by friendly staff who brought us drinks and olives while we sat by the fire. Our food was presented so beautifully and literally everything tasted amazing - even the bread and butter! We had a bottle of red wine and it was the best red wine I’ve tasted. Can’t fault it and we will be back.
Be the first to ReplyExcellent value and service
We had lunch to celebrate 2 birthdays in our group. We have been many times but I realised I rarely leave a review and just accept it is always excellent- but obviously this does not happen by chance. From the moment you enter you are greeted by friendly, helpful staff and we are always pleased to see Paul in his kitchen working his magic. The wine list offers a good selection with helpful advice available if needed. I am amazed at the choice, quality and price of the fixed price lunch. Excellent value. Many thanks to all the staff for making it a wonderful day - sorry for our extended stay.
Be the first to ReplyAn excellent birthday dinner out!
As it was my 75th birthday, I wanted to have a "special" evening dinner out. This place certainly provided it! An elegant and spacious setting , delicious food and friendly, attentive waiters. It is "posh" but not overwhelming. I like learning about food and the wine and food waiter were very happy to answer my questions. We went for the Menu Excellence: my main was the roast breast of salt-aged duck , accompanied by mooli, hispi cabbage, artichoke and red onion puree. My husband chose the Cumbrian salt-aged beef . All cooked to perfection. Starters and desserts equally as tasty. My birthday was acknowledged with my name on the menu and a Happy Birthday chocolate message inscribed on a plate with petit fours to finish. Perfect!!!!

My daughter treated me to Mother’s Day lunch at The Art School , Liverpool and it was exceptional, from the moment we walked through the front door, to the moment of leaving. The staff are very welcoming and the food was delicious, are table waitress Jen, was very welcoming, knowledgeable, informative, she is a credit to the establishment. To finish are afternoon off, on leaving, all mums received a daffodil bulb plant, which was an added bonus, lovely thought. We will definitely return & I hope if you choose to visit, you enjoy your experience as much as we did. Thank you to all the Staff & Chef for such an enjoyable afternoon.
Be the first to ReplyExpensive for the quality delivered
I have dined at the Art School twice before this visit, my first experience was excellent, the second let down by the quality of the service, our third visit was to settle the tie and sadly we won't be coming back. In short the food was a mix of highs and lows but the price was simply high. For the cost save up a bit more and go to Moor Hall or save alot of money and go anywhere else, the price point is Michelin star level but the experience is far from it. We had the paired tasting menu which gave us the overwhelming positve of the meal which was an interesting and well curated selection of wines served by an engaging sommelier. The tasting menu varied in quality widly from a bland confit potato, followed by a delicate scallop dish, to a grossly over salted duck dish, back to a excellent beef / lobster main. The pre-dessert was heavy with chocolate which did nothing to cleanse the palate before another chocolate dessert that was almost indistinguishable from the pre-dessert in flavour profile and uninspired. The issue is simply one of food quality for the price and at this price point the expectation should be high which the food failed to deliver.
Be the first to ReplyAfternoon tea delight
Went here today for afternoon tea which was a gift for my retirement. The setting in the cellar was beautiful with a log fire and lovely decor. The waiter was very attentive and looked after us, the food was lovely but the star of the show was the desserts which were beautifully presented and tasted delicious.
Be the first to ReplyBeautiful evening at The Art School
We went to the Art School for the first time last night. What a beautiful evening we had. From the moment we arrived, sipping fizz by the warm fire through to enjoying a lovely bottle of wine with our meal. We had the prix fixe menu. Delicious. What made the night even better was the quality of the service received. Every member of staff was so knowledgeable, professional and friendly. In particular, we would like to thank Ben who took the time to answer the questions we had about the courses. We will return! X x
Be the first to ReplyA wonderful fine dining experience complemented by lovely staff.
What a memorable evening we had at The Art School Restaurant on the evening of 27th January which was my husband Anthony Francis’ 55th birthday. It was a surprise for him and he (and I) couldn’t have been more pleased. The food was excellent. The service was exemplary and that is what made the experience even more special. Right from the moment Isabella welcomed us warmly, arranged for a ramp for my husband who was in a wheelchair and took our coats, to Jenny who wished my husband warmly for his birthday (he was touched as it was after all a surprise) and showed us to our table and proceeded to explain how the various elements would unfold, to Steven the sommelier who was very knowledgeable about the wine list, to Ben who was discreetly attentive whilst was looking after us at the table, it was a flawless experience. Jenny and Steven had a wonderful sense of humour. It was fine dining delivered by a fine team. We dine out often and the individuals who deliver the culinary experience in our opinion, are as important as the offering itself. The personalised touches were much appreciated. To sum up, I would like to congratulate you Paul, for having the above mentioned team members working at your establishment. They are indeed a credit to you and made our evening extremely special. Thank you once again. Sunita
Be the first to ReplyExemplary!
Exemplary... Dinner at The Art School on their Prix Fixe menu as we were early and were due at the Philharmonic over the road for a show. Service throughout absolutely flawless - that level of 'attention when you need it' but never 'over-bearing' that restaurants find so hard to get right. When it's bang on you know it and that was the case here. If you want attention or need something you aren't sitting there drumming fingers as they are watching the tables and KNOW you are needing something. That's a clever thing that I rank highly in any eatery. Our menu had a lot of choice and varied enough to suit all tastes. Started with a glass of fizz and superb olives. Then an Amuse Bouche (a lovely little soup) and terrific breads with both oak smoked and seaweed infused butters. Delightful. Starters - I had a haggis and foie dish (well, we were only JUST past Burns Night) and wife had duck croquettes. Both superb My main Pave Rump beef with ox cheek and the most divine beef jus gravy i've ever had. Wife had pheasant which she said was excellent. Pud is not my thing, and tend not to have them, but a trio of small (thankfully as VERY rich and sweet) treats followed. As a non lover of puds these were nice. Too sweet for me, but that is just me. The Matcha and lemon item was absolutely beautiful though. Bottle of red was not over priced either - and total bill not silly. Lovely people, lovely food, lovely space. We WILL be back for the fuller menu

I was privileged enough to watch 2 master chefs at work last night, Paul Askew and guest chef Gary Jones . The menu was fabulous accompanied by an excellent wine flight. Paul Askew is not only a stunning chef but the most amazing host. The staff are professional and knowledgeable such a joy to be waited on by such a young crew. It was lovely to see the restaurant packed out on a dreary Thursday night in January. Shows the pull of these great chefs. Well done The Art School look forward to my next visit.
Be the first to ReplyVery nice
Lovely food, great venue, nice friendly staff. However i knocked one star off for a couple of minor things. One was the fact the wine wasn't kept at the table but my glass was regularly left empty waiting to be topped up. Another was my partner ordered a diet coke but when it came t was very flat, when this was pointed out it was replaced with a bottle, which was left at the table. It did make me wonder if the first glass had been used as a mixer earlier on then poured as a drink once a diet coke was ordered. Two small things but not what you expect when a bill for 2 is over £290.

Staff amazing Heating had broke (2 weeks ago) had to wear a blanket (can provide pictures) very cold complained but 2 weeks later no response from receipt of email Food very mediocre (for price paid) Wine fantastic

On reflection this wasn't a terribly good experience. We booked the cheaper fixed price menu as confirmed on their email. We shown to a table withe the 2 more expensive menus already placed there. We thought this was a mistake & had to ask for the one we'd booked. As I say on reflection, the waiter didn't seem surprised so we feel that this was deliberate to add to the cost. Really poor form to put customers in this position ( as though we were 'cheap skates'. The food was generally OK but nothing special & at no time were we asked if everything was OK. The ox cheek starter was very odd - more like a crisp. No atmosphere & far too much reverence - the putting on of the gloves ceremony with each course! Pretentious moi! Sadly we won't be returning & it's only when you google general reviews that you get a truer picture

Tucked away in a side street in Liverpool, you probably wouldn't just stumble upon it. But my husband and I were planning to end our first wedding anniversary in Liverpool with a tour of the local asylum and I wanted to treat him to a good quality dinner. Of the back of SY23 and Ynyshir I thought this would be a struggle. I was surprised when I reviewed the Michelin Guide that there were not stars in Liverpool, but I found this michelin plate and it appealed- fresh and clean and Paul Askew was a name that rang a bell. On making the reservation I advised that it was our wedding anniversary. They printed a special menu with '1st anniversary' on it which was a lovely touch. The restaurant is spacious and fresh looking. We opted for 3 courses, but we did not pair wine as we had to drive. We started with some snacks and bread which always pleases the husband- lovely choice of 2 butters (oaksmoked and kombu seaweed). We enjoyed some beautiful seasonally ingredients, including John Dory, Venison, Seabass, Cauliflower, Jerusalem Artichoke and mushrooms. Deserts were amazing- chocolate, popcorn, passionfruit. And the toffee apple granny smith was simply stunning visually and taste wise. A beautiful pic for the gram! On bringing out the bill they brought out a plate with 'Happy Anniversary' drizzled in chocolate, with some stunning fudge. I have to say the portion sizes were very reasonable (something people often complain about in such restaurants). The service was friendly, not stuffy at all. I would definitely return should I visit Liverpool again.

Four of us in for dinner this week - opted for the Prix Fixe at £45/pp which was excellent value. it's all just great - location (Georgian Quarter a block from the Hope Street Hotel where we were staying), the room, service at all levels and, of course, the food. Not sure why this place doesn't have a Star.... Very good value & extensive wine list. We were in the £40-50/btl range but a decent list up and down from there. We weren't rushed at the table - our reservation was 6:15pm (latest for PF) & though they might want the table for later but were told to take our time. Even on a Tuesday night in February the place was pretty full. We'e always enjoyed the London Carriage Works but The Art School is our new "go-to" when visiting Liverpool!

Excellent meal today at Art School. From start to finish the service was impeccable, all servers were very friendly and really understood everything they served. Hygiene was also very good. The food was outstanding, both visually and in flavour. I am vegetarian and the flavour each dish delivered was really very good. We even got to meet Paul Askew - a lovely person
