Oh, man, I really wanted to like this place. Been trying to eat here for months and finally the opportunity arose. Meh.
Uber-aggressive service at times by support staff. Mandatory 20% gratuity added to the bill (this was not a Healthy San Francisco mandated surcharge or anything like that – it was the gratuity added to the bill for a table numbering less than six people) which explained the weird, uneven, and frustrating service.
I love me some Spanish food. Pulpo (octopus), tapas, papas fritas, paella, gambas, even an occasional bacon-wrapped fig; “love” is not too strong a word.
Some dishes did score, such as the watermelon tomatoes; but, most disappointed. In reading some of the other reviews, I must have been at Teleferic on a bad/off night; or, the dining scene in Palo Alto/South Bay has lost its edge and the plethora of nouveau riche is content with mediocrity.
The lobster paella was way too oily and missing lobster. At $58, I would pass on the skimpy dish. The vegetarian paella had the crispy rice we requested, but was skimpy as well. The pulpo was fine, such as it was, though did not compare to the photo online. As an aside, I am growing increasingly concerned about the growing number of restaurants serving octopus; are we eating these out of existence?
Wine was good and reasonable. Balanced list. Great organic Chardonnay by the glass at $12, as well as a cava and a great Tempranillo ($15/glass).
In the Bay Area, we have a number of dining options. When I want Spanish again, I think I’ll stick to Duende (Oakland) or Coqueta (San Francisco). Teleferic disappoints. And it ain't even close to Barcelona, no way.
