Had a business lunch at Tatsu today and was impressed by the quality and value. The most expensive lunch bento on the menu is $58, which is cheap compared to what I think is a like-for-like comp, Mikuni ($90). The bentos have an appealing mix of items, while the sushi and sashimi are fresh + the restaurant has thankfully avoided the 3-slices-of-salmon routine, offering more unique fishes like swordfish without additional supplements. I was also very surprised that the mostly nigiri style sushi was well made, which is something that can't be said of other Japanese restaurants in the MBFC/Raffles Area that claim to serve Japanese food. I would just avoid ordering the daily specials like the waitress suggested - we had the fried silverfish and boy was it a small platter. Service was efficient and the restaurant isn't too noisy so it is conducive for meetings. Great hidden find in the CBD area and one I'll be adding to my list of go-to business lunch places.

Came here for lunch with some friends and instead of ordering from the lunch menu, I tried the Sushi A course which was 68++. The starter was a very nice cherry tomato followed by a sashimi platter is pretty standard and fresh enough. After that we had a slab of winter melon with some prawns in stock, somehow I don't recall having an agemono dish but nevermind. Following this was salmon don, miso soup, then finally the dessert soya beancurd. The salmon don was pretty good. Overall taste was not overpowering in any way but balanced, not making you awfully thirsty or needing more condiments.

the food here is pretty good, and worth a visit if you're into teppanyaki. singapore has a dearth of these fry-in-your-face places, and the places that dodo it range from the very cheap to the very expensive.this one lies somewhat at an upper-middling price point - but my hypothesis is that price makes little difference to the eating (it's mainly just fresh ingredients with garlic, which is difficult to go wrong with). what you're paying for instead is that entire package of ambiance and show - the latter really up to the skills of the chef in throwing foods up to unnecessary height and setting things on fire.so tatsu is, as with its price point, a good posher-than-average joint that doesn't have its underpants in a wad - with pretty delicious food off an extensive menu.I particularly like the very large menu: teppanyaki can sometimes be quite boring and bleargh since everything is cooked/ sauteed/ seared on that huge flat stove with garlic. but you can start as we did with century egg tofu and slices of fresh sashimi - which were nicely sliced to be meaty and seafood sweet - and then work your way up to the cooked food,we had prawns, lobster, wagyu and vegetables before it was all finished up with fried rice - and while the latter lacks the glamour of the first few courses, that whole frying process lifts all the browned bits and loveliness of the earlier dishes. I think it's the best part (and I don't even like rice).we finished with a small cube of complimentary pudding, which was just that bit of sweet to finish off a good meal.service is fantastic - very attentive even if it's a little less polished than in a posher joint - and the chefs know how to have fun. it's a good friday night date!

17 years is a long time for an F&B outlet to survive in Singapore so there must be something that Japanese restaurant Tatsu is doing right. While other restaurants are busy opening (and closing) chain stores, Tatsu focused on maintaining their customer base at Chijmes and only recently expanded their business to serving diners in the Central Business District. Located at Asia Square Tower 2, customers will be able to enjoy 2 different dining experiences from the Sushi Bar and the dedicated Teppanyaki Performance Counter. The Sushi Bar serves fresh sashimi and sushi along with seasonal creations. The fish is air-flown multiple times a week for that extra freshness. The Omakase Sashimi ($40) is a contemporary platter with some interesting flavors. Notable were the Albacore (aka White Tuna) marinated in soy and yuzu and the superbly marbled and creamy Toro! There's something about homemade tofu with century egg sauce that drives me crazy and the one used in the Pitan Tofu ($8) dish was lightly spiced to give it that extra kick.If you would like some entertainment to go along with your meal, you would be entertained by Chef Kelvin's acrobatic cooking antics at Tatsu Teppanyaki. There were flying knives, seasoning shakers and food flying around and not to mention fire, lots of fire! If you are into rich flavors, do not miss out on the food here. The King prawn ($24) is done 2 ways. The head is flattened and grilled into a biscuit disk that crackles. The meat was tossed in an umami garlic mayonnaise with lots of fried shallots and garlic (enough to kill a vamp). Save the sauce for the other dishes, it's amazing with EVERYTHING. especially with the garlic fried rice.An A4 grade Wagyu Beef from Miyazaki Prefecture is used for the teppanyaki (200g, $168) but was sadly a little overwhelmed by the yakiniku sauce. Well, you can customize the strength of the flavors so just let the chefs know in advance.Affordable lunch and dinner sets are available at the Asia Square outlet with prices starting from $25. Bento delivery is also available in the CBD.
