Sadly, this restaurant was not worth our time nor money. This is my first review on TripAdvisor to advise people to be cautious of this place. We paid over $400 for course meal for two and glass of wine each. The built-in 22% gratuity was also sadly not worth what we were serviced on. The quality of the ingredient and amount of food was just not up to par with what was expected of a place with Michelin star. We will not be returning again.

Worst dining experience in my lifetime. NOT worthy of. Michelin star. I never write reviews but am compelled to warn others about how painfully awful the dining here is: cheap ingredients (yes pigeon!), cold food, sitting for 35 minutes with no food, waitstaff who had not showered, food from previous diners smashed into wood table, etc.

Dear owners - Please refund me my money. This was my first and definitely last time ever coming to this restaurant and I would not recommend it to anyone. Michelin and other awards were given in 2016; 7 years go they received a Michelin star and since the quality has gone down and down and down. at moments the quality and dining experience was borderline disgusting. The quality and choice of ingredients were low and cheap.(read list below) It allows the owners to maximize profits by serving cheap items at very high prices. The entire restaurant is prefix so maximum profits every night serving one item to everyone. Two prefix, one glass of wine, one coffee ($6) totaled $385 including tip. (We welcome the owners to refund us our money) We are experienced fine dining individuals so trying Michelin star restaurants is a routine thing of ours. Staff were professional and kind. I am a restauranteur myself: Here is my input: Food ingredients were mostly low cost items (root vegetables, dates, onions, lettuces, and squashes and different vegetable purées , a small piece of monkfish) and cheese and an almond flower cake at the end. All Cheap inexpensive items. So why cost so much? Because owners are misleading customers. The food is described and then arranged in a way that is so looks pretty and fancy you lose track of what was said. And then you eat it and still don’t know what it is. Some items I had to spit out. Some items were so overpowering with flavor (ginger or vinegar) that I could not eat it. Some items were outright inedible. Again, staff were kind. Sad experience. I feel like the reputation of Michelin has been tarnished by restaurants like this one. I feel sorry for anyone who makes the mistake of going here based on their past awards from 2016. To the owners of this restaurant please remove your 2016 Michelin star from your marketing. Or Drop your price by more than half. You are misleading good paying customers into believing they are getting a fine meal. They are not. Thanks for reading and I am about to go get two slices of pizza because I’m broke and still starving!!

Tail Up Goat is a must-visit destination for those looking to immerse themselves in the world of fine dining. This charming establishment offers an unforgettable Michelin experience, making it the perfect place for those venturing into this prestigious culinary realm for the first time. The service is impeccable, with attentive and professional staff who anticipate every diner's needs. The meticulously curated tasting menu is a showcase of advanced culinary techniques and vibrant flavors that capture the essence of signature cuisine. Each dish is a work of art in both presentation and taste. The wine pairing experience at Tail Up Goat is noteworthy. While they offer a selection of classic wines, I would highly recommend opting for the more daring and adventurous pairing. This choice surprises with unconventional wines that complement and elevate each bite, creating a symphony of flavors on the palate. In summary, Tail Up Goat provides a sublime gastronomic experience, perfect for newcomers to the Michelin world. With its exemplary service, exquisite tasting menu, and bold pairings, this restaurant is undoubtedly a stellar recommendation.

I'm sorry to say this did not live up to its billing. The service was overly efficient and once we ordered we felt we were very much dining at the restaurant's schedule not ours. If we hadn't asked for a pause the five courses would have been served with 90 mins. The wine pairings did show some interesting wines and the staff did seem knowledgeable. The food however wasn't that special. We've eaten in a lot of Michelin restaurants and I don't know what the guide saw in this place. We thought at a push it might get a Bib Gourmand but nothing more. There was little said about the food on presentation but wait staff returned to ask how it was before we had a chance to even taste it. Overall a disappointing and poor value experience

Wow! Just wow! Food- the dishes we tasted were creative, beautifully presented, perfectly cooked, and just lovely. We enjoyed most of what we tasted. My personal faves were the layered potato, rockfish and brown butter cake. Drinks- the drinks were creative and plentiful Vibe- small restaurant, simple decor, they even have a few outdoor tables. Price- if in the dining room you MUST get the tasting menu, if sitting at bar you can do tasting menu or ala carte. So it’s a petty penny to dine and drink. Service- I’ve never see a staff work better as a team. No task is above or beneath folks. They anticipated every need, desires, and beyond while finding. Everyone we interacted with was friendly, helpful, and attentive. And sooooo knowledgeable about the food and drink offerings. Allergies/food preferences- it’s almost like they catered more to my allergies than the retailer diners. The care they put into ensuring what you are eating, what’s in it, and that your allergy is not in there.

Really excellent. Course menu with choices for each, reasonable portions and smooth service. Very high-end cooking, it's hard to believe there are that many better restaurants than this in DC. Yes, 22% service is added, but our server, Molly, deserved it. Personable and engaged. Good for special meal. Personal editorial: if you"re going to spend this $ for a special meal, don't you have something better to wear than jeans and a tee shirt? Yes, there is a casual vibe, but still.... Not for kids.
Be the first to ReplyDelicious!!
Delicious!! The most yummy four course meal (gluten free was easily catered for) and a really nice vibe in the restaurant too. Not too pretentious plus amazing food = the perfect combo!! Will definitely be back. Thank you.
Be the first to ReplyAlways Fantastic
This was our second visit and it continues to impress. This 1 Michelin starred restaurant managed impressive food and impeccable service without being too fussy or trying too hard. The staff is attentive without being all over you, and the beverage/Som staff has great recommendations (even recommended a local bar for us to get drinks at after we finished). Food is as impressive as you'd expect, with lots of unique flair and perfect preparation. Would highly recommend and will be back!

Sat in the bar, went for a la carte, took four courses, one almost better than the other. Loved the choice of wine by the glass. Attentive service On my return-to list
Be the first to ReplyTotally Overpriced and Overrated
Paid $325 for 2 with one single glass of wine. 22% tip added automatically. Food mediocre and lathered with nouvelle cuisine style sauces. Perfect waste of money.

Our party agreed that the meal we had at Tail Up Goat was one of the best we’ve ever had. The care taken with the ingredients, the very knowledgeable and delightfully unpretentious yet professional service (brava to Katie), and the personal attention to our table and menu beginning at the reservation and not ending until well after we left the restaurant shows not only the whole team’s commitment to excellence, but also the team’s absolute love of good food! And… who better to dine with than others who adore eating well! I’d say that Tail Up Goat’s food, wine pairing, and service rival some of the best fresh ingredient forward restaurants I’ve ever eaten at, including Chez Panisse and Greens.
Be the first to ReplyExpensive and overrated
We came for a special date night and at $100 a person you expect amazing food. I had the vegetarian options and I left thoroughly disappointed. The risotto was bland and the peas reminiscent of baby food. My husbands steak was tiny, half gristle, and more well than rare. Overall experience left us feeling like it is overpriced and overrated.
Be the first to ReplyUnchewable fat.
A New York strip steak is pretty basic. The fun experimenting with different mixes of spices and foods (at $100 per person) was ruined by my steak - which was one third gristle and unchewable fat. C'mon!

Truly one if the best meals I've ever had. I sat at the bar and enjoyed a series of small plates. The descriptions don't do them justice. I was blown away by every single thing. Good red wine and happy people all around me made for one of the best dining experiences you can imagine! I wish I lived near TUG!!

Tail Up Goat was suggested to us by a sous chef at The Tasting Counter in Somerville, MA. Another amazing restaurant, by the way. Everything was superb. From the first greeting at the door to the last crumb of olive oil Birthday cake. We sat at the bar to "people watch" and were taken care of by an amazingly knowledgeable (dinner & drinks) bartender. The menu is creative without trying too hard and not over the top. I want to fly back to DC just for their sour doughs.
Be the first to ReplyThe Key to a Great Trip
I think that food is the key for turning a good trip into a great trip. I just visited Washington DC, my first time. I saw all sorts of history, grand monuments, world class art, and Judy Garland’s Ruby Slippers! I soaked myself to the bone in my own sweat traipsing around the National Mall in August. All that was good.
Then I had dinner at Tail Up Goat. The menu is structured as such that one can try a variety of small, medium and large plates at will. The large plates seemed like dishes meant for more than one person, so, as a solo traveler, I stuck to the small and medium plates.
I probably overdid it by a plate or two. But the food is so good, you just want to keep exploring! The salted cod, seaweed sourdough, and corn custard desert were stand outs, and I cannot even describe the corn custard. It’s just something you have to try.
Oh, looking back... this was a great trip!
Great dinner eclectic menu
What great food, a real taste delight. We tried the scallops, only two but cooked to perfection with a salty bite. The tuna crudo was fresh and light. White tea ice cream was a nice ending. The favorite part of the evening was the finishing homemade caramel with your check. These should be sold! I am suggesting you offer these as a small bag when you leave. So good

The food at this well known pricey DC restaurant was as good as reported. And it’s in an appealing quiet residential location. However if you are seated outside you are obligated to put back on your mask any time any staff member approaches the table. And they come over a lot of course because the service is attentive for a multi course prix fix. The constant on and off of masks at an outdoor table 15 feet from other tables completely disrupts the dining experience, and is a kind of Covid preventative theater. Even if your entire party is vaccinated this rule is enforced. Better to avoid the restaurant and it’s hefty price tag until they can line up with presidential and CDC guidance: masks are not necessary outdoors for those vaccinated.

Consistently great food. Have eaten there both pre pandemic and have ordered take out during the pandemic. Unlike so many other restaurants, Tail Up Goat appear to have made the transition to pick delivery flawlessly. The food is both interesting and tasty. Even in the plastic containers the food is nicely presented. They seem to have adjusted the recipes to people who will be eating the food at home.
Be the first to ReplyArtistic delicious cusine at the cost of some snobbery and self importance
Right off the bat, I must write that the cuisine here is tasty and sophisticated. It’s one of those places that as soon as you take a bite, you realize the chef has real talent at creating special flavors.
The space too is elegantly chic and casual at the same time. My only complaint is that they take themselves and Covid 19 way too seriously for my taste. The waiters wouldn’t come near the table without all of us putting on our masks so it meant about 20-30 times of taking on and off our face masks. I realize that I’m an Arizonan and we’re much less worried about Covid than the East Coast folks but I don’t think I will return here until the Covid issue is resolved.
Memorable dining experience
Our party of four had an amazing (outdoor!) meal at Tail Up Goat on a recent Saturday evening. The menu - price fixe, offered something for everyone as it was divided into: omnivore, pescatarian and vegetarian selections with each option offering consisting of four wonderful courses. Two of us had the pescatarian menu, while the others tried the omnivore and vegetarian selections. The food, outstanding - with incredible flavors, textures and delights to be found with each course. Excellent cocktails began the meal and we enjoyed a delicious bottle of rose from the Azores during our repast.
During this time of Covid, we had to wear our masks when not eating or drinking and whenever a server approached us, but 'tis better to be safe than sorry. It was a sacrifice we were happy to make for such a great meal.
Great food, great service
This restaurant was amazing. Extremely well priced for the quality of food and service. I am a little bit of a picky eater but was able to find lots of options. The food combinations were new, unexpected, and delicious. Definitely make a reservation!
Be the first to ReplyAmazingly good. An adventure in eating of the best kind!
Four of us went to Tail Up Goat for a Saturday night dinner. The restaurant succeeds on every level. The food is fantastic! We put together a dinner for the four of us that consisted of two appetizers (seared scallop and tuna crudo), squash bread, pasta, and then all of us had our own servings of swordfish for the entree. There were 3 desserts, so we took all three and divided them four ways. Everything, and I do mean everything, was spectacularly delicious. The flavors are rich, lean toward spicy, and all of the ingredients mixed impeccably. Good wine list, excellent cocktail list (our friends took spontaneously created mocktails and raved), superb and friendly service. Also, the room had that buzz of activity - it was full - but it wasn't to the point of so many restaurants these days. We could engage in a pleasant conversation despite the fact that three of the four of us have impaired hearing. The architects got the sound design of the room right. Nice atmosphere in general. I would love to go again! Reservations are essential and you will need to monitor when the night you want becomes available - you'll need to move quickly. Very, very highly recommended.
