I had the please of dining here twice.
The first was alone at the bar. I had a bottle of bordeaux and three tacos and I thought it was brilliant!! Tacos were balanced, flavors delightful and wine paring superb!. That was few years ago. I recently went there on there last night before closing. Service was great but could get a bit overwhelming as typical USA Michelin restaurants become. The wine selection was excellent and I had a bottle of Riesling, followed by a bottle of bordeaux. I recalled having appetizers and three tacos. I can't say I enjoyed my meal very much as the flavors were very strong and fighting with each other. Nothing was balanced. Someone is very much overdoing it with the flavors and the over gourmeting of the dishes. I hope when they reopen they can recalibrate this. Clearly this is an outstanding restaurant, and a SoCal gem. But I don't know why when US resturants get a Michelin rating, the food goes downhill from a food perspective. Michelin rating in the US means high price liquor, exorbitant wait for reservation, exorbitant prices, stuffy and overwhelming service, a chef of great repute...and the pleasure of the meal...what was there before the rating has long gone. In France a Michelin one star would be a 3 star here in terms of the food. In France all Michelin rated restaurants always leave you speechless when it comes to the food, any amount of stars. So while Taco Maria is retooling, I hope chef Salgado is taking a sabbatical in the Himalayas or somewhere to reconnect to his roots and not busy cooking up a new super duper extra extra fancy expensive new restaurant with blah food. Why only three stars? Well when you pay $700 for two people to have Tacos but better have the best Tacos in your life!! And it so was not. I would love a credit of $300 at the new restaurant please....

Killer service. Understandably they got a Michelin star. Closing soon to move to have the space to meet demand. Excited to see what they do.

I will truly miss Taco Maria! It was an absolute honor and pleasure to meet Chef Carlos Salgado and his lovely wife. Chef Carlos truly serves you his artistic excellence in his food and undoubtedly creates delicious food from his soul. From the smoked albacore taco, chile morita... and not to forget the dessert! He not only serves you half an avocado- it's smoked in some kind almond wood + covered in onion ash salt?! ((I could have all that totally wrong but, my attempt to describe it is my best attempt)) I wish him the best of luck in his future endeavors and know that we will see there again soon! Cheers Taco Maria!

Extremely bad service, our host's name was Maria, she was very rude and careless, the waiter said he is the manager and the restaurant stuff they were not able to accommodate us in one table of 6 even though by the time we were leaving 4 tables were empty!!! At the end a lady by name of Emily came and said she is the owner answer s sorry!!! But that was too late!!!!

We heard this location is closing this weekend so my wife and I made a special trip to dine here tonight one last time. Our first couple of experiences here were very good so we wanted to go one last time. However, when we arrived the menu showed $100 per person for a four course prefix menu. Ugh, the dreaded prefix menu! The food is very good here but in my opinion it doesn't command $100/person excluding drinks. So rather than dining here one last time we walked across the courtyard to another fantastic restaurant where we could order exactly what we wanted. I don't think I'll be looking for any updates on where Taco Maria plans to reopen.

Taco Maria is an absolute gem for brunch! Our recent experience at this restaurant was nothing short of perfection. From the moment we walked in, the warm and inviting atmosphere set the tone for a delightful dining experience. The brunch menu was diverse and creatively curated, offering a fusion of flavors that impressed our taste buds. Each dish was a work of art, beautifully presented and crafted with attention to detail. The combination of traditional Mexican elements with contemporary twists created a unique and mouthwatering culinary adventure. The service was exceptional - attentive, friendly, and knowledgeable about the menu. The staff made us feel like valued guests, enhancing our overall enjoyment. The standout for us was the incredible blend of flavors and textures in every dish we tried. From the perfectly spiced tacos to the delectable chilaquiles, every bite was a delightful journey.

I came here for my anniversary with my boyfriend tonight and it was the best place we could've chosen to go to! The service was seriously 12/10, and every staff member cares so much about giving you the best experience possible. We got one of each thing on the menu so we could try everything, and it was all the most unique and delicious flavor combinations we've had. Not to mention, incredibly beautiful plating. We also came super hungry and were definitely satisfied with the portions. If you come a bit earlier before your reservation, you can also check out the stores around it for a fun activity. We will be returning and recommending this place to all of our friends and family. Thank you Taco Maria for such a special anniversary experience.

Having eaten in mexico city, austin, chicago, vietnam, and elsewhere, taco maria is easily five stars. exceptional service, with precise and delicious flavors that, upon leaving, left me thinking i underpaid.
Be the first to ReplyFantastic food and wine selection.
Service is great as well. All the items are great but I would highly recommend the Cesar salad, the fish taco, the steak and the melon dessert. They were fantastic.

Taco Maria is one of the best restaurants in OC and absolutely deserves its Michelin Star.Interior/Decor - Very modern and sleek design with an outdoor area that is just perfect in a cool OC night.Price: I felt the price sitting at about $100 per person was perfect for what we received.Drinks: Some very good cocktails but nothing that stood out for me. I think this is an area where there could be room for improvement and creativity.Food: First I have to say that the plating was masterfully done and did much to enhance the experience. The scallop dish was out of this world and blew me away, along with the blue corn tortillas and pork belly. The deserts also hit hard with the cheese cake and citrus panna cotta, both delicious, wish I could have had seconds!SoCal has a lot of Mexican restaurants ranging from low cost to more expensive but where this restaurant shines is not just in providing high quality versions of dishes we all know but in using those dishes as inspiration for new and unique creations.Quick Tip: Go with a partner so you can order BOTH options on the menu and try everything.

Truly a spectacular experience! We were admittedly mesmerized sitting at the bar and watching the food being prepared with such intention, confidence, flow, and soul. Dim lighting, cozy, beautilful dark wood bar and small format setting. Every dish was plated beautifully, and bursting with flavor. The ceasar, corn bread, albacore taco, grouper, and sorbet dessert were all wonderful. Every single bite. Can't wait to try the spring menu. Total standout.

this was my first time dining at a michelin star mexican restaurant, and the experience did not disappoint! their prix fixe menu is $95 per person and with two options for each course, my partner and i were able to try everything that was offered. some of the standouts included the scallop dish, the guinea hen entree, the blue corn tortillas with seasoned avocado, and the citrus panna cotta. everything was plated beautifully and with high attention to detail. service was top notch and alongside the intimate outdoor seating, it was a lovely, romantic experience.

Food was good and nice presentation but WAY too expensive at $95 per person for pre set menu and no option for ala carte. Will not be returning to this restaurant.
Be the first to ReplyThe food was very refined and well done.
They used spices to bring out the hidden flavors in many of their dishes. The best tamale I ever had. Each dish came with welcomed surprises and new taste. The service was excellent. The staff was very friendly and welcoming.

We had such a fun night here !! My fiancé and I each got a different item for each course so we can try everything and it was all really good! I really liked the tamal a lot. probably my favorite item besides the guava cheesecake. I wish I had more pics but I only have one of the tocino which was also really good. I didn't feel like drinking so I had an agua fresca and it was not too sweet which I really liked. would definitely recommend making a rezzie and heading over for a really nice dinner.

These were our expectations and realities with our experience here. I knew they were a one star Michelin star, I knew that we were going by to get good food regardless of what was served. We had both thought it would be authentic Mexican food. Instead it was a highly priced menu, $95 per person plus $55 for wine paring, for Mexican "inspired" food. The food was delicious as expected but it was very much a "this can be put on a taco and called Mexican food". They don't have a hard liquor license so their margaritas don't have tequila. A Michelin star restaurant with no liquor license?! Hmm ok, so the reward is just for food I guess, still a let down. The marg was really good even without tequila so I'll give them that. We sat at the bar so we could see everything the chefs were doing which was a pretty cool experience. So much of it was prepared already and so many of the ingredients already processed that you couldn't identify anything on the plate or in the flavor profile. Any restaurant that has to tell you what your eating because you can't see it for yourself is weird to me. Waiter staff is minimal, you can't really tell waiter from sommelier from hostess so if you need a drink you just have to ask whoever. Everyone is super soft spoken so if you care to hear about your dish, tell them to speak up or take off their mask so you can lip read. Overall it was a good experience. We didn't have any bad food or bad drinks. Everyone was nice. Will we be going back? Not in a hurry. $350 for two people is not an easy thing to swallow.

Food had its moments, but we were seated outside so it was hard to focus when you're freezing your ass off. The patio on a cold night ruins any chance of enjoying the meal and the heat lamps seem like an afterthought as they don't offer any respite. Stinks to go spend all that money and be shivering, like everyone out there was freezing and talking about it. Plus, not for nothing but if you are a vegetarian probably not worth it, as you'll have to eat the Caesar (which is lame esp. for a Michelin star menu, and drenched in dressing, cloying in anchovy flavor which also is not vegetarian, more like a wet coleslaw than a Caesar), the tamal (which is ok but nothing to write home about), and then for entree (and this was the case last time I went) you basically get more of the side dish that comes with the meat entree - so I got a plate of cabbage - GTFOH. Cold desserts on a cold patio added to the insult. Last time I'll go there unless they bring back the ala carte lunch menu where you can actually get tacos. The woman manager was great, but the rest of the waiters were too cool, and acted like they were doing us a favor by taking our order. Our waiter was annoyed we were cold so he didn't even give us the chocolates that all the other diners received at the end of their meal. Try Holbox next time, you'll thank me:
Be the first to ReplyWow! I am blown away at the dinner I had at Taco Maria.
Everything from the food to service was exceptional. Here is a breakdown of the food:1st Course: Callo GratinadoThis was a dish unlike anything I've ever had. The scallops were perfectly cooked, and the squid ink breadcrumbs were the perfect touch.2nd Course: PescadillaThis was my top dish of the night! The smoked albacore was insanely delicious, I wanted to order more of this taco. The blue corn tortilla was perfectly crisp yet chewy. The accompanying salsa added to the overall smokiness of the taco. 3rd Course: Gallina PintadaThis was a course I wasn't sure about when I ordered it. I have never had Guinea hen before so I wasn't sure what to expect. The meat was perfectly cooked and the star of the dish was the sauce. It was one of the best sauces I've ever had. In addition to the plate they bring your fresh blue corn tortillas, cilantro, avocado, and chili oil to build tacos out of it which I did! 4th Course: Cremoso de CitricosThe dessert I chose was the panna cotta. I've never had a panna cotta so light and refreshing. It wasn't heavy and thick like other panna cottas I've had it was more like a whipped topping. A fantastic way to end the meal. Other notable experiences were getting to sit at the counter to have a close up view of the food being prepared. Lucky for us Chef Carlos Salgado was in the house. It was an honor to watch him at work meticulously checking every single dish that went out. It's no wonder why Taco Maria earned a Michelin star and is consistently rated as one of the top restaurants in Southern California!
Be the first to Replyfinally got to try this spot out.
expected to be blown away from all the hype and maybe I came in expecting too much? don't get me wrong some of the items are out of this world delicious while some are not. to start I got the Callao Grantinado (scalllop), pescadila taco, pork belly, and arroz con leche. the pork belly literally melts in your mouth. arroz con leche might have been my favorite thing of the night scallop was delicious but very disappointed with the pescadila. it was very dry and would not recommend. overall, I'd go back when they change the menu.
Be the first to ReplyEverything was well prepared.
I don't think the sea bass needed the white cream sauce. Maybe serve it on the side or if it were more broth base, i would have appreciated it better. The shrimp Diablos were not too spicy but they have a strong chili taste that satisfies without burning my mouth. Everything was great and the staff can explain all the flavors and ideas the chef was aiming to present. Very happy overall. Great presentation. A nice treat for a dinner out with friends.
Be the first to ReplyWas expecting 5 stars out of place with a Michelin star :(.
The food was very good but the menu was already limited as is and they were out of two of the items we wanted to order. Caesar salad was probably the best I've ever had. We ordered the chuleta de puerco which was basically their take on Al pastor. The pork chop was very tender and pre cut to be able to put into tacos. It had a bacon crumble on top with a pineapple sauce. All of it was very tasty just wished for a better experience to be able to try what we wanted
Be the first to ReplyVery disappointing and mediocre.
Two dishes that stood out were the aguachile and the striped bass, were really excellent. Everything else, prawns, kurobata pork and duck leg, very average with unbalanced flavors. The side beans were absolutely tasteless and the side of avocado is literally just 1/2 of avocado for $11 We were left wondering what the Michelin star was given for. Completely mediocre and unspecial dinner. Totally unexpected, since most places with Michelin stars are special. This was my birthday dinner too, so I'm very disappointed.
Be the first to ReplyLet me just start with the margarita.
.. Black salt rim, nostalgic of my childhood lemon salt eating days. It was by far the best margarita I've ever had, so I had two! Our table of four got to enjoy a lot that was on the menu. The food was amazing, the presentation was beautiful, the staff was on it! I ordered the pork chop and the sauce it was served on top of was amazing as was every bite that I enjoyed of that dish! My date had the striped bass which was also amazing! We ordered for the table some mushrooms and prawns. Everything was so delicious and I look forward to being able to visit again in the future to try some more dishes on their seasonal menu. An insider tip, book 2 weeks before you want to visit. The reservations open at 9 AM two weeks out.

(march22) very torn here: the food is really great, there's no question about that, but since maybe we weren't able to have a set menu or maybe because we couldn't sit inside (so whatever vision chef salgado had for seating and ambiance wasn't there), it was a bit lacking for me in overall experience, though it might not be that way for you during your visit at all. specifically, agua fresca -- as good as everyone says it ischampignones con ortigas -- these maitake mushrooms look as if they were just plucked and placed right in front of you, and they have such a great texture to them + the green mole is just sour enough to make your mouth water in preparation for your mains. great appetizer for ussides, frijoles and avocado -- the epazote is such a unique flavor to me; it's strangely addicting if you're in to it, but i can also see how other people might not enjoy this at all. the avocado is fine, you need it for the tacos you're about to make because how could you not have avocado with your meal in southern california? but special, maybe notaccompaniments, tortillas and cilantro/spice -- i remember eating here when it first opened up and i did not like the blue tortillas at all. they were dry, cold, and fell apart easily, but not this time. this time, they were near perfect in every way, but i do wish they served a salsa and not a fried chili oil (of the asian variety) because salsa seems like it could be so personal and open to interpretation; a missed opportunity in my eyesmole de pato -- i order mole every chance i get, from the fanciest restaurant down to the most hole in the wall because i just think to myself, maybe! just maybe! unsurprisingly, this one has to be up there in terms of best examples of the dish i've had, but i say that knowing i need to have more because as i'm sure you've all experienced, great mole is very few and far between. so while i'd like to be more nuanced about this in my review for you, all i can say is, i loved it: it's dark and complex and i've had plenty of bad ones. whatever that's worth to youarrachera -- just a really great cut of steak, cooked to medium/medium rare with a side of very delicious grilled spring onions. perfect for making tacos withpastel de piloncillo -- very sweet, warm cake for dessert; vanilla custard and what i can only describe as a condensed vanilla syrup at the bottom. great ending to a very pleasant mealso all that being said, part of me thinks it was a bit pricier than it needed to be, and that's probably what a michelin star affords you. don't get me wrong, this price point is very well earned, but it's not something i can see myself wanting again and again so long as i have any regard for what this does to my pocketbookthank you so much for the wonderful meal and great eveningwithout a doubt, we will be back to experience the prefixe and indoor dining as soon as your team will allow!
