Taberna Dos Mercadores Porto Reviews from The Last Year
Best restaurant in Porto!
Best meal we had in Porto! The seafood was amazing, staff was friendly & wine was exceptional! We couldn’t recommend it more!
I did not have an opportunity to enjoy a meal at this
I did not have an opportunity to enjoy a meal at this restaurant. We waited in line for a little under 3 hours only to be turned away when we were next in line. In all fairness a server came out about every 15 minutes to inform the line that closing is at 9:45 pm at which point no one is allowed in. If possible ensure a reservation before you show up at the restaurant or go at least 30 minutes before they open and expect to wait. From the outside looking in all dishes served looked amazing! I must say however that I witnessed the server being rude, argumentative and condescending to others standing in line if they dared to ask him a question. He was truly unnecessarily rude and loud making sure all of us line could hear him literally scold the person asking a simple question. My star rating is solely based on the servers rudeness, NOT the food.
Delicious!!!
This was our favorite restaurant in Portugal. The restaurant is small and close to the kitchen so everything comes out hot and fresh! You should call ahead to make a reservation because the line is long to get in. We ended up calling a month ahead of time to ensure that we got a table. I highly recommend the garlic shrimp, octopus rice and the drunken pear. It’s a must do when you’re in Porto!!!
SKIP, SKIP, SKIP
This is a terribly operated restaurant. We got in line around 5:30 PM and were a party of 3. There weren't many people ahead of us, so we thought there was a good chance of getting seated. This would be true, if the restaurant operated with appreciation toward their customers. I realized after waiting quite a while, that there was another party of 3 in the very front of the line and they've been there the entire time I've been waiting. I watched parties of two and single parties get seated but this group never did. You know why? Because the restaurant only has ONE SINGLE TABLE for parties of 3. So if you have 3 people, you have to wait for that ONE table. If there are 2 parties of 3 in front of you, you would wait up to FOUR hours if they each ate for 2 hours. The restaurant refuses to put two tables of two together so seat parties of 3, because heaven forbid, they lose out on collecting €€€ on that empty seat. What might be worse, is the attitude of the host. After waiting a long time, almost 2 hours, he came out and addressed the line, telling people it was "impossible" for everyone to be seated. And this is when he also told us and another party of 3 about the 3-person table policy and how there is only ONE table. And then he laughed at the people! Like it was so funny that the restaurant wasted valuable vacation time of the people who were waiting in line. When I think about it now though, it is rather silly that people wait so long during their vacation just to dine at this restaurant. So you know what? If I could save one group from going here, I feel like I've done you a service. Go anywhere else where you will be served great food and support a restaurant that doesn't treat their potential customers with disdain. Then use that time you saved from NOT waiting in line to explore the wonderful city of Porto some more.
Terrible Restaurant
Terrible restaurant, bad attitude, no sense of customer service, arrogant, not that great a menu, overrated. Avoidable
Unique and super small but not rushed.
We booked a few weeks ahead following a recommendation and were grateful when we arrived to see the queue outside of hopefuls! Staff were really attentive, limited menu (and meat / fish only) but delicious food and wine. Even with the queue (and a very persistent lady clearly testing the waiters patience hassling to get in which he managed very well!) we didn’t feel at all rushed to finish and free up our table of 4. I’d really recommend but probably best to book!
Seafood Heaven
My partner and I visited in April 2024 and we loved it. Reservations are essential! My partner had accidentally entered the reservation in his calendar on the wrong evening and we arrived the night AFTER the original reservation. Despite being packed and likely having been booked full they graciously accommodated us. What this place does with seafood is worthy of a Nobel prize. It’s been a couple months since our visit but I still remember the amazing cod I had and the seafood stew my partner had. The desserts were outstanding as well.
Worth the wait
What an amazing find!! Unfortunately we left it too late to make a reservation so we decided to queue up. It was a Wednesday evening and we joined the queue at 5.50pm there were 2 of us. The restaurant opens at 5.30pm the restaurant was full and there were 7 groups in front of us. It took an hour and a half of queuing to get a table but it was so worth it. The quality of the food is outstanding we had the fish soup, prawns and cod croquettes to start and we had the salted cod and sea bass. Both were good but the cod was far better. Staff are attentive and a well oiled machine and food is quick to come out. It is worth noting they don’t often offer tables for 4 people so if you are a group of 4 or 3 (there is one table for 3 people) I would seriously consider trying to reserve a table well in advance as lots of bigger groups were unable to get a table. On the night I went a group of 4 had reserved a table and when they left they were able to offer this table to groups of 4 in the queue but I heard the waiter tell the group they were lucky as they don’t usually have a table for 4. Join the queue early as lots in the queue that joined later didn’t get a table. It’s worth it if you like good food.
Waited 1.
5 hours as there are a lot of people that want to eat here and only a 16 pax capacity. If you miss the first seating be prepared to wait awhile. Really small but cute space. The shellfish stew and octopus rice are musts. The salted fish is popular too but didn't order because it would've been too much food. The food was really good and I can understand why this place is so popular but honestly if you're on vacation the last thing you want to do, especially if you have a tight sightseeing schedule, is to wait a long time for a meal. Skip if you have limited days in Porto. There are a lot of good places to eat here!
Great Restaurant Experience in Porto!
Worth the effort. I called multiple times about 6 weeks in advance for a reservation - keep trying they will answer eventually! Otherwise, there is a line up the block to try to get a seat w/o a reservation. The space is small and intimate, the service attentive and helpful. Best of all, the food is wonderful. Fresh, flavorful seafood accompanied by great bread and good wines.
This is a Taberna Dos Mercadores appreciation post My
This is a Taberna Dos Mercadores appreciation post My friend and I ate our way through Portugal and found the most incredible restaurant the night we arrived in Porto. We waited in line for nearly 2 hours because the reviews for this place were that good. And let me tell you something--it was worth the wait. Highlights: I am a sucker for clams in any sort of broth, especially if it's accompanied by bread, butter, and garlic. I was taken aback by the perfectly cooked octopus in our Arroz de Polvo. It had the consistency of fresh mozzarella. Our neighbors ordered the flaming salt-baked cod--a show stopper. I made sure to burn my mouth on a traditional Portuguese sausage called Alheira, due to the lightning speed at which I felt the need to inhale the dish. And to top it all off, we filled our second stomachs with the necessary Port wine and dessert combo. That night, we ordered more dishes than I can list, but I think you get the picture. This was a meal to remember for a lifetime. The ambiance is intimate and quaint. You can see and hear the chefs making your food and, from what I remember, the restaurant fits about 16 people at a time. Very much recommend you do what you can to get in. Be patient. Be kind to the servers. And have fun talking to people in line because you will be there a while.
Don't stand in line if you've ever had a good meal.
It's not that the food isn't tasty (it is)), or the staff is not friendly (they are), or the place is not cute(it is). It's that you can probably find another restaurant that is all these things without standing in line for between one to two hours. The fish is fresh and well prepared, and all the dishes were good, but none were amazing. While I will grant that most of the restaurants we tried in Porto were pretty underwhelming, you can find another place that offers good food without suffering.
Delicious cuisine and congenial service.
Inside or outside- both dining experiences recommended.
Wonderful first day in Porto! After our long travels,
Wonderful first day in Porto! After our long travels, getting settled in hotel and a quick rest we were starving. We didn't want to waste our first meal however on just any tourist trap. Taberna is the "real deal" from service to food/flavors and ambience this is where you must start your Porto adventure! There might be a wait after you knock on the door but be patient- it's worth it. This meal set the bar for all other dining experiences in Porto.
TL;DR -- Don't leave Porto without trying Taberna Dos
TL;DR -- Don't leave Porto without trying Taberna Dos Mercadores! The line and wait is daunting, but you can get in (hints in the longer summary). When you get in, the food is exquisite and you'll leave feeling that it was so worth the wait! The Longer Version: First off, thank you to the community of Yelpers who have rated this great LITTLE restaurant and shared their reviews, experiences, and insights. When I first looked for places to eat in Porto, I ran across Tabernas Dos Mercadores. Of course, I flipped through all the pictures first (after seeing the high ratings and relatively high number of ratings). I loved what I saw. I then went on to read the reviews and realized from others' experiences that this place would be tough to get into. So, I was on a mission! I was not going to leave Porto without having a meal here! I had read that I should go about 30 minutes ahead of opening to start getting in line. One Yelper also said that going at 2:00pm when the lunch crowd dwindles worked for her. So, while in the general area, I went to the restaurant at ~1:50pm on a Thursday (spring season)...there was a substantial line of at least 12 people in front of us (we have a family of 4)--even on a rainy day. We waited and waited...I think one group in this line ended up going in before the staff came out at 2:50pm and said that most of us in line won't get in before they closed lunch service at 3:30pm. But, before we turned away, I asked the waiter what time they opened for dinner. He told me 5:30pm (most think dinner service starts at 7:00pm -- this was KEY for me). We stayed in the area and toured the Palacio da Bolsa (Stock Exchange), and then I went back to restaurant at 5:00pm and found that I was already 2nd in line. I knocked on the door to tell a staff member that I would wait in line for a table for 4. He told me that without a reservation, I wouldn't be guaranteed a table, but I could wait. On 3/28, the reservation list was already full until the end of April (according to him). At 5:30, they opened! We were in luck and got in!!! There was a party of 3 in front of me, there were two other parties of 2 each behind me that were all in line...we all got in! That was the end of the line (at that point). There were 2 tables already set aside for reservations. Once inside, you could see why there was such a line. This place can only seat 18 people inside its cozy and quaint interior (tiny!). On average, each table turned in about 1.5 hours. So, that's why the line can be so long and not everyone can get in. While the staff was a little rude when people in line kept asking 'can I get in, when can I get in, is there a table, etc...', once inside, the service was impeccable! Onto the food...we ordered the Shrimp in Fry Pan, Sea Bass Salt Crusted, Octopus and Its Rice in Oven, and the Seafood Rice. Everything was as delicious as everyone else said, and it was SO WORTH the adventure to get in! I think the best summary of the great food was from my oldest daughter who rarely touches seafood and rarely tries anything new..."daddy, this was a really great meal!" As we left around 7:00pm and walked out the door, sure enough...there was the LONG line up the hill...at least 20 deep. Don't go around 7:00pm and think you are among the first.
Pretentious much? The host literally laughed in my face
Pretentious much? The host literally laughed in my face when I inquired about making reservations for a future date. I'll be taking my money elsewhere.
Amazing quality food and wonderful atmosphere
We had a lovely evening here, food is incredible. Such high quality ingredients and care goes into every bite. It is definitely worth queuing for but if you can call in advance and get a booking for the 7pm service as we did, even better. Thank you for looking after us, we had such a memorable evening!
I wish I lived in Porto.
The food was phenomenal. The service was great and place had a warm ambiance. My 9 year old daughter loved the shrimp! I managed to try 1 piece before she at the rest. We loved the Octopus over rice as well...we scraped the dish clean.
Tiny restaurant, huge plates of delicious food 😋
This restaurant had been recommended to us by a local but we couldn’t book. Turned up at 7 and there was a queue. Decided to wait and I’m so glad we did. Food was delicious , hearty and excellent value. Huge portions. Staff worked almost manically but still managed a joke. Turn up early and hungry!!!!
Simply stunning ..... I advise you to book.
Quite simply this little restaurant kitchen creates beautiful food in which the ingredients are the stars. I am unable to find fault with any aspect of this restaurant. Waiting staff were charming and, as has been said elsewhere here, patient despite the queue on the street. We had lunch here on Saturday and returned on Sunday. The prawns arrive in a frying pan and I advise you to save some bread to absorb the juice because it'll make you smile. We smeared the garlic on the bread and it was beautiful. We've eaten octopus and rice here and it's remarkable. It's oven baked but the octopus melts in your mouth; I've never eaten octopus like it. We also had the seafood and rice and again, I don't really have the superlatives to describe it. Every mouthful was a joyous experience. On both occasions we drank a crisp white wine recommended by the waiter and we finished with a 10 year old Kopke port. Read this in tandem with the other reviews and take a look at the queue on the hill down to the restaurant - you won't be disappointed.
We only waited about 25 min after getting in line before
We only waited about 25 min after getting in line before opening and missed being in the first group of tables. The wait was worth it and everything was so good--high contender for being my favorite meal in Portugal. Service was great and quick, and the inside was really cute. Very very small, but homey, which we liked over the hype of the bigger flashy restaurants.
Lovely flavors and presentation, food was delicious and
Lovely flavors and presentation, food was delicious and great ambience. Loved this small restaurant, they make you feel like family.
Octopus Rice, yum.
I guess we were just lucky. No waiting. Had the octopus rice. Wonder how it was cooked to make octopus so soft. I will leave the wonder to the chef.
We came 10-15 minutes prior to opening time and it wasn't
We came 10-15 minutes prior to opening time and it wasn't early enough to make it for the first seating. We ended up waiting almost 2 hours for a table so my tip is to come early (maybe 30 minutes before opening). We ordered the pastel de bacalhau (3,00), shrimp (9,00), octopus salad (11,00), Seafood rice (38,00) and a meringue pie (4,00). The portion size here is very generous. Our favourite dishes were definitely the shrimp and the octopus salad. The seafood rice had a lot of seafood in it and that itself could definitely feed 4 people. I would recommend you come here with 4 people as their portion sizes are quite large. The dessert was okay - not our cup of tea. I would want to try the flan next time. If you want to visit, I would recommend coming early or you will be stuck waiting. They do around 1 and a half seatings during lunch before they close. They had to turn people away after the second seating.
Everything was delicious.
waiter recommended a bottle of wine that was outstanding. We got the cod, lamb ribs, and lemon meringue. It was a bit confusing outside because they only have limited seating and the door is locked and you just have to wait outside in line until they call you in. Staff is very friendly and it's just a wonderful vibe. Did i mention the food is outstanding.
The best meal we've had in Porto so far, and we've been
The best meal we've had in Porto so far, and we've been really pleasantly surprised by Portuguese food! Taberna makes me want to stay longer here... just for the food! We arrived half an hour before opening time, since we knew that a line was highly likely (having read the reviews). And indeed, many people started queueing up right after us! Fortunately we were first in line, and were the first to get seated in this tiny, cavern-like restaurant. There are only 4 tables that can each seat 2 people or so... making the full restaurant capacity only 8!! Wow! Were we blown away by the food. For starters, we ordered a codfish croquette, clams in oil, and fish soup. For mains, we shared the seafood rice (for 2 people). The codfish croquette was served first, and it came piping hot and freshly fried. The texture was crispy on the outside, soft and mashed on the inside, but also with some sinewy bits not dissimilar from pork floss. It was very good. The clams and fish soup followed. The clams were good, imbued in a garlic and shallot filled oil, as was the fish soup, which was a deep orange hue (likely from shellfish broth) and full of fish bits. Then came the showstopper. The arroz de mariscos, or the seafood rice. My god, this was so delicious!! The rice had some bite to it and was immersed in a deeply flavourful stew, filled with shrimp, mussels, clams, and cockles. We just couldn't stop eating bite after bite!! The staff were also very kind and respectful, and we had an absolutely great time. Would highly recommend to everyone who comes by Porto!
Delicious! Favorite dish was the beans and seafood
Delicious! Favorite dish was the beans and seafood casserole dish. tried coming for dinner without reservation and line was not moving. Didn't want to wait 2 hours potentially so I came back for lunch next day 12:35pm there was a line already, but I got in after 10 mins of waiting. TIP- I noticed the restaurant gets empty tables from 2pm onwards so if you want to get a table without waiting or reservations, go at an off hour like at 2pm onwards (before dinner starts)
Every minute was worth the wait.
Excellent customer service, amazing food. Wine pairings were perfect. Amazing seafood soup. Lamb chops were great. We will return!!
TIPS TO KNOW BEFORE YOU GO: - Reservations are booked 2
TIPS TO KNOW BEFORE YOU GO: - Reservations are booked 2 months out. Reservations are daily for 2 time slots (7pm/9pm). They won't hold your table for too long, so come as soon as you can to your reserved time or you will forfeit the table to walk-in guests. - Always a line outside for walk-ins due to the small capacity inside. If you don't have a reservation, try to get there as early as possible for the least wait time and best chance to get in. - The smaller the group in your party, the faster you can go in. They reserved only select tables for 3-4 people groups. - Large groups (over 4 people) is not likely, so skip this place altogether - They stop taking walk-ins after 9:45-10pm. We came around 7:30pm on a weekday. My friends and I consisted of a 3 people party, so we ended up waiting 2hrs in total! They only had a table by the window available for 3 guests, so we literally had to wait for the party before us to sit down, order and finish their meal. That took a good while! Finally, our turn arrived. We sat down at the table near the window where everyone outside waiting in line can see use eating, but we had no choice. We already knew what we were going to order, so we ordered immediately. We got a Petras Sparkling Water to share. We also got 3 dishes to share: SHRIMP IN FRYING PAN When the dish comes out, it's a fire show. It's blazing with fire which eventually dies down. You are treated with several pieces of prawn soaked in a delicious sauce. It was a nice small appetizer to start. OCTOPUS AND ITS RICE IN THE OVEN This is probably the most biggest and best valued dish on the menu. It's toasted on the top due to being baked in the oven. The octopus pieces are mixed in with the rice. In general, the rice was a tad bit salty for my taste, but nonetheless, it was very flavorful/seasoned. SHELLFISH PORRIDGE This is also quite big. It's a pot full of various seafoods: clams, mussels, prawns. The porridge had like a grits-like textured content inside as well making it filling. The sauce was very flavorful. This was a dish that we were debating on, but super glad that we got to try it. It was delicious. Despite the extra long wait for our table, I think it was worth it. The food is amazing! I love all our choices and you can't go wrong with whatever you get. Now, I get the hype around this restaurant. Probably one of the most memorable restaurants we ate at in Porto. Definitely recommend.

Great Service - amazing dinner!!
Read about the site in NYT and bought a reservation at Mother Wolf in LA 2 days later. Worked great and the food was amazing!!!
Worked perfectly!
Got the reservation (that I couldn't get anywhere else) and was able to entertain a group of friends at the infamous Bern's Steakhouse.
Got into Nobu Malibu
Wonderful! My parents are visiting and we have wanted to go to Nobu Malibu for years. I tried getting a reservation myself but it was next to impossible. So glad I was able to buy a reservation on appointment trader for a decent price!
Very easy
Was very hesitant going into this experience but am glad to say that it worked out very well ! will definitely use appointment trader in the future
Fabulous Lunch
I was veeeeeerry skeptical that this would work, particularly at a restaurant as hard to get into as Nobu Malibu, and it was perfect! We had lunch outside on the patio and it was fabulous!
Great reviewer team
Just wanted to take a second to shout out the reviewer team. Even though they probably review hundreds of listings and bids a day, they still take the time to leave great comments and respond relatively quickly. Thanks!
Incredible
I got a reservation to Don Angie, which I've been trying to book for weeks! I am very happy with this service.
Best platform out there!
Super simple, easy, and fast to secure reservations for hard-to-get restaurants and locations!
This app is life changing
This app has opened my world up to so many wonderful new experiences I would never have the chance to have without access to this awesome app! 10/10!
Worked perfectly
Was a little nervous at first but was pleased to see that the booking went through flawlessly.
Highly recommended.
Success on Short Notice
Was able to snag an indoor table at Don Angie through an absolutely seamless worry-free process.
Worked perfectly, thank you!

Worked well, got me into a restaurant with no availability
I was skeptical, and I still don't really know how they managed to find this hard-to-find reservation, but it was a win-win from my point of view, and I'll use this service again.
Last minute reservation for Delilah Las Vegas
Got a last minute reservation, dinner for 2 at Delilah Las Vegas: super impressed! The process was simple, transaction seamless. We had an amazing time! Couldn’t be happier! 😍
It works!
Ok at this point I've attended a reservation purchased on AT by a friend and sold a reservation personally. Both worked pretty smoothly, nothing sketchy about it. A few areas for improvement including a way to more directly communicate between buyers and sellers, but the app always seems to be in development. AT customer support is really(!) responsive and helpful too if you have questions!
Money transfer
As a seller, I like the fact i have the ability now to transfer money out of my AT account and into a bank account. Makes getting the money much easier then the process before.
Love this app
Got to go to places otherwise unreachable
Easy Access
Very easy to get into one of the hardest restaurants to reserve in New York.
Whose name will my reservation be under when I arrive at the venue?
It can be under your name or a name you choose! Some reservation offers already include the AppointmentTrader Transfer Service which will transfer the reservation in to your name. If its not included you can add it on after buying the reservation for a small fee. One thing on that though: As many reservations become available at last minute, taking a reservation in someone else name is quick and great for privacy. Most reservations on AT are listed with a virtual phone number, so all you need to do is present the phone number at the hostess stand and you are good to go!
Payouts Blocked Because of Sell Through Rate
Does anyone know how AT plans to handle cases where a seller is quitting the platform but has a sell through rate <25%? The error message I got said to fill more bids or find other ways to increase the rate.
Is AT really going to block sellers from withdrawing their money? Especially revenue made before the sell through rate was introduced??

Let’s go. Get more people placing bids!
I will give you 50% of ALL of my PROFITS if you teach me how to make profits?
LOL. Thank you The New Yorker.
Appointment
Transferring reservations is not supported in AT. Why not just use the name in the AT screenshot?
Buyers interested in Bern's Steakhouse: PLEASE READ
Same goes for 4 Charles and I Sodi
Prepaid Reservation Fee
Agreed. Ultimately not addressing this month after month is clearly resulting in a drop in certain venue’s rankings & sales.
Congrats on 3 mil
🍾🍾🍾🍾🍾🍾🧨🧨🧨 now on to 30 mill!
Need to cancel a bid, not getting a response… how do I do it?
Click on "Take off the Market Option" in your portfolio
Working on your bid?
Your bid has been “matched” with a reservation. From the time a reservation has been located, the seller of the reservation must connect with moderator to give transfer information for reservation. If the seller;however, does NOT respond to reservation transfer, then your bid is reprocessed and returns to the first step, which is connecting your request to a reservation.
Process after bid is accepted.
Hey @EvocativeFold67, welcome to appointmenttrader! Once the reservation is in your portfolio, you definitely own the timeslot, the review team would not have approved the trade if the reservation wasn't confirmed - so you are going :-) Judging from your post you bid today and are going tomorrow - don't worry as long as you initiated the name transfer, you are good - the transfer service has to work with the opening hours of the reservation team of the respective venue. You will likely see the transfer confirmation a couple hours before your reservation time.
Where do the Reservations on AppointmentTrader come from?
Mostly from people who don't need their reservations or appointments any longer. AT has no relationship with places listed and acts as a platform connecting buyers and sellers making sure that listed reservations are real and that privacy is not compromised when transacting.
What happens if my bid expires unanswered?
Hey @FluffyStar64, thanks for the question! When you place your bid the amount gets transferred in a deposit account, the second you either cancel your bid or a few minutes after the bid expires the funds are moved back into your main account from where you can refund it to your payment method or use for other transactions.
