Understated casual luxury
No fanfare here, just great quality, well thought out taste trip. I kind of feel sorry for the dressed up special occasion diners who figure at $200 a pop it must be fancy. If you're celebrating being lucky enough to blow $200+ on some awesome fish for no particular reason, this is a reliable spot

A Wednesday night in January, I had just arrived in LGB to hear Clara-Jumi Kang play the Beethoven Violin Concerto with the the PACIFIC SYMPHONY and eat sushi. SUSHI ZO was my first stop. And what a choice it was. Oddly, when they opened at 6 PM I was the only guest. in fact, the only guest for the entire 2 1/2 hours I was there. RARE !! So I basically had a private dinner at the sushi bar, chatting up the chef and the 2 "servers". I had been to Kyoto three times just in the in the past year. The nigiri I had at Sushi Zo measured up to my experiences in Kyoto in every regard.. A slight variation on the usual edomae style nigiri... but supreme..several appetizers and 23 pieces of nigiri.....including monkfish liver and 2 different delicious uni-one from Japan and the other from Santa Barbara....... divine !!!

Came there on Jan 23, 2020 for my 2nd time. They have new dishes such as caviar and A5 waygu. The cost increased from 180 to 200 to 220 depending on what sashimi they added. The quality is still good but I feel there's something missed compare to the first time.

Total 23 dishes served. From appetizer to desert. Nice lunch. Server full of smile & couples of good chef. We ordered a nice sake, cost $800, sharing the sake with their 3 chefs. Good moments. Definitely will come back

Been here several times. Place is a bit drab but the rice and the fish are absolutely outstanding. Only omakase, amazing variety and quality. The owner and chefs are charming and very knowledgeable, overall a top Japanese only to be outdone by the best places in Japan.

So heard of all the hype and decided to try for a business dinner. I’ve had sushi Japan and everywhere else in the world. I was quite disappointed in what was served. Do we really have to have 3 types of snapper to fully understand it? The nigiri is served so small and the fish so dainty, I had to get a hamburger after the meal.
It was worth a try but won’t be going back.
very good restaurant
We came here with friends to celebrate my birthday, and it was spectacular. The fish was fresh and delicious, and the presentations were breathtakingly imaginative. It was very pricy, but the quality and experience was second to none.

Top class niguiri Omakase. Squid with uni top class. Clean, perfect and precise service. Sushi bar 5 stars. Impressive cuts, fish quality from coast of california and japan mostly. One of the best address for foodies crazy for sushi.

This place is probably the closest, in terms of presentation and format, to Jiros sushi you can find in Los Angeles.
The place is small. unassuming. Clean. Simple. Elegant. We went there on a Friday for lunch and were there for an hour. We were the only customers there.
Omakase only. They kindly reminded us asking for California rolls or spicy something mayonnaise rolls was not tolerated.
The fish was absolutely top notch, well cured. We sampled about 22 dishes and all were superbly made and presented. The rice was equally well made. Had a perfect texture to complement the fish. It's served slightly warm.
The presentation was just perfect. Soy sauce was only available for dishes that may need it. Otherwise it's taken away from you to prevent you from ruining your sushi. Each piece of sushi was beautifully made. Served with perfect timing.
The service was attentive and polite (how could it not be when we were the only ones there the entire time)?
A few criticism - I hate to compare it to jiro but I couldn't help with their purist presentation and service. The rice can be a little more firm and perhaps squeezed a bit tighter. I eat with my hands but for those that eat with chopsticks the sushi can easily falls apart.
To be a bit more nitpicking, we wish the chef would be a bit more interactive. This is somewhat to be expected in such a sushi joint.
Finally. The value. We had about 22 pieces/dishes. For about $200 a person before tips. For 200 a person I would expect a meal that I won't forget for a few years. It was good. But not Jiro great (where all your senses were awaken). But I guess this is what it is in LA. I still prefer our local place near South Bay - Kurisaki.
As good as it gets
I hesitate to write this review. This should not become a popular place it is just too good. The not so good, this is not a pretty place. The outstanding, it is quiet you can have a normal conversation. The sushi rice is divine and rightly proportioned. The fish is flown in from Japan the very same day. At a 180 dollars for the omakase this is a steal. Words are not yet invented to describe this experience. Best sushi ever, better than Jiro in Japan. Friendly service in perfect English.
