Sushi Sato San Francisco Reviews from The Last Year

We went to Sushi Sato for my father's birthday and had the most AMAZING experience, thanks to manager James. He managed to organize a personalized omakase for us, was incredibly accomodating with respect to food prefrences and tastes, and really made the experience memorable. Not only was the sushi delicious but the omakase was filled with unique dishes that I have never seen anywhere else but were fantastic -/ tomatoe ceviche, crab risotto and more. Staff were fantastic and James has banter to keep amy dinner lively 10/10 would recommend!

Had an amazing dinner here and loved the ambiance! The Miso Crab Risotto and the Fatty Tuna Uni Truffle Bowl were to die for and we can't wait to comeback and try their omakase next time!
Hokkaido uni was still tasting fresh despite being a Sunday
Hokkaido uni was still tasting fresh despite being a Sunday night. Loved the staff who were super attentive and knowledgeable about both sushi and wine pairings. Their rolls were fresh and well made and had limited mess. The place was fairly empty so not sure how it would be on a crowded day, however I expect them to do amazing.
Please don't come here if you have any sort of allergies.
We ended up here because Kuma, which I knew was very good about gluten-free sushi, was full with reservations. When I asked them initially, they said everything was gluten-free, which was initially a red flag to me (because obviously tempura is not and they offered that), so I played it safe and only ordered salmon and avocado rolls. I specifically asked for no soy sauce, but they assured me it was made in-house and gluten-free. I decided to trust it and a few minutes in my stomach was hurting and I knew it had to be the culprit. If you don't have the resources to manage allergies, just admit that, don't lie.
Quiet, modern, chic ambiance.
Well lit, not crowded, easy to have a conversation. I went on a Sunday night at prime dinner time and only 1 other table was dinning. Service was very attentive, easy to get ahold of. Knowledgeable about the menu. The sushi tasting was a wonderfully prepared spread. Highly recommend this. I also ordered the Sato signature roll. The concept was fun, each roll was topped with a unique item. However the roll itself was very basic: cucumber, crab, shrimp tempura. It was fun to try but I wouldn't order again. Overall, recommend this restaurant!
We have reservation at 8:00 pm.
We arrived in time but were told we have to wait. We wait until 8:30 to be seated, 8:40 we ordered and they told us due to high volume. We can not order food but tasting menu only. Fine. and until 9:07,there was no food. In addition, a waiter came and asked to take order?? What? You said only tasting menu and we have ordered!! While I am waiting I can't bear more and writing this review. This is valentine day, we drive from South Bay to here. Worst experience ever. Ridiculous the waiter explained as he was asking for anything to drink? Without you ever provide a drink menu?? Be alert! Never go here for your important day.
The sushi was subpar and 'fishy' The lobster on the lobster
The sushi was subpar and 'fishy' The lobster on the lobster salad was warm and a bit mushy --I don't recall the last time I had fishy tasting lobster. This restaurant was serving fish from days earlier it was simply not fresh by any stretch of the imagination nor my palate The Omakase lacked any creativity (this was not any omakase I've previously experienced) and I'm not a tough critic It was sushi with loads of rice attached and Not easy on the palate But after the $49 service charge automatically attached to a bill for 2 ppl This was beyond The manager was egregious when he commented that the service charge was a state mandate and not a 'gratuity' $320 out the door with only one cocktail and I'm still reeling in from this especially as a native San Franciscan and a world traveler I just returned from a week in NYC and had several sushi meals that exceeded my expectations. My guest last night at dinner is a prominent Hollywood producer, a friend and neighbor Our experience was BEYOND disappointing The service was decent and ambiance was nice but the cost esp after the $49 'state mandated' service charge'which is a bold face lie was just unacceptable Their websites boasts 'limited' availability With 5 star reviews --I'm mystified all the way around when the dining room was nearly empty I chose this location to accommodate my friends limited time schedule as it was close to her hotel. This experience was disenchanting, inexplicable, and felt like highway robbery. The manager had a smug and rude disposition especially when I nicely asked about the 20% auto gratuity which they also calculated with the sales tax. We were not sitting at the omakase sushi bar, just to clarify. Nothing about our cuisine was Omakase tho we ordered the fixed Omakase menu. I have honestly have never experienced such a Bad/compromised and insanely overpriced meal in SanFrancisco or in Paris, London, Tokyo or New York City, I'm truly bewildered. I will stop my rant now just feeling extremely misled based upon what they say they offer and what they actually deliver to the table. I'm happy to pay for excellent quality food without hesitation. $320 and demanding a $50 service charge is not commensurate with the dismal quality and presentation of left over fish with loads of brown rice. Mind boggling.
Delicious food and drinks! The fish was super fresh.
We tried a variety of nigiri and a couple hand rolls. The hot dishes were great too. Crab risotto was sooo good!

I loved that the omakase bar was in a different section of the restaurant which created a more exclusive, intimate setting. The omakase menu was $195 pp which is on the pricier side in terms of number of courses and size of fish compared to other places like Kusakabe, but I liked that most types of fish catered to my preferences. If you love uni, scallop, salmon, toro like me - you'll be eating a lot of that here! I also appreciated that our chef and servers were attentive and patiently waited between conversations before presenting us with each course. They also gave us a complimentary dessert to celebrate my husband's birthday with us!
What an amazing dinner experience at Sushi Sato.
We did their 9 course Omakase ($165) which was absolutely amazing from start to finish. The staff was super accommodating and timed everything so perfectly. We left dinner very happy. Sato Omakase menu: Aperitif- green juice Oyster- nice and meaty with daikon radish and ponzu Chawan Mushi- one of my favorites, steamed egg custard Ceviche- super fresh vegetables, refreshing Chef's exclusively selected sushi- 5 pcs (halibut, yellow jack, sea scallop, golden eye snapper, ocean trout). I personally loved the sea scallop and ocean trout! Bincho Tataki- seared albacore with truffle (one of my fav dishes!) Chef's exclusively selected sushi- 5pcs (amber jack, sea bream, tuna, fatty tuna, sea urchin) uni was such high quality here Owen- red miso soup Yuzu panacotta- light and sweet We also tried a hand roll with uni, tuna, and caviar which was an incredible blend of flavors. Such an exquisite dish! Overall, all fish was fresh and delicious and I enjoyed the unique flavors the chef created. Sake was fabulous as well. Can't wait to come back for another great dinner!
Great sushi! Fresh, flavorful and delicious.
Highly recommend the tuna carpaccio and the chefs selection of sushi.

9 course sato tasting at Sushi Sato! Liked every dish and left no food behind. It was unique and all flavors mixed well together. My favorite had to be the Uni Truffle Bowl (usually not a fan of truffle, but here it did not overpower the uni or toro at all) This was the Sato Tasting (highly recommend) Amuse Bouche Lobster Salad Chef's Exclusively Selected Sushi - 5pcs (halibut, red snapper, trout can't remember others) Gourmet Medley Tomato Ceviche Chef's Exclusively Selected Sushi - 5pcs x2 yellowtail, two versions of toro, uni + one other) Uni truffle bowl (+$35) Seared scallops Owen (red miso soup) Yuzu Panacotta All fish was so fresh and delicious. Great dinner and left happy. Food 5/5 Service 5/5 Ambience 5/5
HIGHLY DISAPPOINTING.
Do not waste your time or money here. Service was slow, atmosphere was boring, food extremely overpriced, watered down drinks and over $400 for two people. I was taking my friend from out of town out for his last dinner before he flew home and was hoping to end his stay with a great dinner, this was NOT it. We walked in for our reservation at 6pm on a Friday night. When we walked in not one person was eating at this establishment. That should have been my queue to leave. No host greeted us and there were no servers in this place. Instead the 2 people behind the bar stared at us like they had seen a ghost. I actually had to greet them!!! And they followed up by saying a host would be out to greet us soon...5 minutes later a host shows up just to end up seating us at the bar! I ordered a smoked old fashion and my friend ordered tequila on the rocks... both came out with a small amount of crushed ice which immediately melted and watered down our drinks. Afterwards the bartender apologizes and says all we have is crushed iced. That is something that should have been mentioned first, Ive never had an old fashioned at a "Whiskey Bar" with crushed ice. Basically I had a watered down glass of whiskey. A proper old fashioned should be served with Big cubes that melt slowly and allow you to enjoy the taste of a spirit before it gets watered down. We ordered two appetizers, a cold dish of eggplant which was blah and smoked albacore,...5 TINY slices with truffle for $25. The albacore was tasty but so small and not anything amazing. We then got 6 pieces of nigiri per person and it was also small portioned and unimpressive. The best tasting was the wagyu. Ended up eating a basic shrimp tempura hand roll which was probably better than the rest of the meal but something you could get at any basic sushi restaurant. I wanted sake and bartender brought out a bottle without asking what type of sake we preferred. She mentioned it was her favorite... to me it was floral and sweet. I asked for something more on the dry side and she smirked and said that was the driest sake they had... dry sake IS NOT sweet!! The next bottle she grabbed was much dryer and more my style. I asked for a glass and she never mentioned a price nor explained anything to me about the sake. Simply no attention to detail and no effort to make the experience better. Two of the most boring bartenders EVER. One of them was so concerned about spritzing the cut pineapple and garnishes with water over and over again as we sat at the bar. If only she put more effort elsewhere! Another thing I disliked about this place is there was no sushi counter where you could see the quality of fish nor could you see the preparation of the sushi or who was preparing it. It took us 25 minutes to get our nigiri and we were the only people in the entire restaurant. I am the type to splurge on sushi because its one of my favorite things to eat. But I left this place hungry and so disappointed that I ended up getting food on my way home. When I go out service is a major part of the experience and the service here felt like a HUGE MISS, major disappointment. There are so many other sushi establishments that will give you a mind blowing experience for $400. I basically wasted my money here and should have walked out as soon as the two deers stuck in headlights looked at us oddly. I don't know why they have a high yelp rating, this is highly misleading. Just shows you cannot always trust Yelp. I don't typically leave yelp reviews but I am so pissed off and upset about this crappy experience and the high price that I had to express myself. AND!!!! They had the nerve to automatically add a service charge to our bill. WTF???? who does that for a party of 2?? Do yourself a favor and go someplace else!!!! PLEASE. PLEASE. PLEASE!
