Some of the best sushi I have ever had.
We ordered a suggested flight with recommended sake. A completely satisfying (and filling) meal with my son. Highly recommended.

Nakazawa remains one of my favorite restaurants in the DMV and my favorite sushi counter! Each meal and experience is always so special and unique!
Be the first to ReplyAmazing food and chefs but questionable service.
Hubby and I celebrated this year's Valentine's Day at Nakazawa. We booked the chef's counter and got the super omakase and makgeolli. The super omakase was superb and it literally made me miss Japan so much! I can say the quality of the fish, meat, and all the other ingredients were top notch. The vibe of the restaurant was minimalist and elegant. The service was okay for a Michelin Star restaurant. Some of the servers were a little loud and I'm just not used to that being in a Michelin restaurant. They were also not very attentive. I dropped my napkin and my husband had to ask for a replacement after about 15-20 minutes of waiting. I'm not saying it was an inconvenience to ask but you kind of expect that kind of service for a pricey restaurant. Other than that, they were helpful in asking if we need help with the extensive drink menu. It was also worth mentioning how weird the process was to help me on my seat. We booked the chef's counter and the server wanted me to stand on the counter's foot rest so she can push the chair on me. I almost lost balance while standing on the foot rest. That kind of threw me off and had a sour start to our experience. I can't say I'll be back but it was definitely worth trying! The food was superb!

I can't imagine sushi getting better than this, not even in Japan. I was too busy enjoying the food and experience to take pics. Very expensive but worth it to experience at least once. This place is so great that a couple of chefs that worked under the main one were able to start their own. It was about 17-18 nigiri sushi when I went and each one was either a 9-10/10. The uni was insane wow, I think about it everyday. The tuna was also my favorite. The ratio of fish to rice was perfect. He used blow torch for a couple pieces and it added so much flavor. I did omakase and well worth it. The sushi chef made the sushi right in front of me and handed it to me while one of the hosts was next to me explaining what it was and where it came from and answering any questions I had. Staff was very friendly. Great dining environment.

This was such an amazing experience! The hotel has valet parking, and they escorted us to the restaurant. Everyone working in the restaurant was amazing and attentive to every detail. They were engaging and offered their suggestions based on what we said we liked before. Every single bite is a treat and so carefully made. The order in which each piece is given is perfect. I couldn't believe 2 hours of eating had past.

I went here last night with my Brother-in-Law and Father-in-Law and did the Omakase experience for $180. I didn't take any pictures out of respect for the experience so I hope this written review will suffice. Hands down best sushi I have ever had in my life. You get 20 pieces with the deal we ordered and the chef prepares the sushi right in front of you. Each experience is different and tailored toward what the chef wants to serve you. You eat the sushi one at a time. We decided to eat with our hand vs chopsticks and then they give you a little towel to wipe your fingers after each sushi piece. The ambiance is very high class feeling and perfect for the experience. We ordered sake and Japanese whiskey as well. I left feeling not completely full but not completely empty. Hands down best sushi though I've had. Definitely try this place out.
Be the first to ReplyIf you like sushi, definitely give it a try.
It might be a bit pricey, but if you enjoy izakaya, this place is great. Uni was SO delicious. This place is quiet--perfect for a peaceful meal with your partner. (We spent around $600 between the two of us. Just for your reference)

What an experience. This omakase will blow your mind. We splurged for the $300 a person course - probably the most I'll ever spend for dinner. But I get it: premium, fresh, succulent nigiri, generous caviar, melt-in-your-mouth uni - it adds up. Shout out to the entire team for great service all around, and I loved the intimate space and bar - it was busy and lively but not too loud or crowded. My sushi-loving spouse was very pleased to have celebrated his birthday here. Would love to come back but might need another special occasion to justify the very high cost. As I'm sure others have noted, remember that the entrance is not accessible inside the Waldorf Astoria. It's in the back of the building with its own entrance, and you can't even cut through the hotel to use the closest exit. Get dropped off on 12th St between Pennsylvania and Constitution.
Be the first to ReplyI had a very enjoyable experience here.
I want to mention that my fiancée and I were supposed to dine here on NYE at a table, but I got sick and couldn't make it. I contacted the customer service team and they contacted me back right away. The lady let me know that I'd still be charged $300, but that the credit would apply on my new reservation. She was very understanding and said if I was going to spend the money she would want me to be able to taste the food. I also got her opinion on table versus sushi counter. She told me since it was my first time, she highly recommended the sushi counter. We went two weeks later and I was in much better shape. It was extremely cold that night, saved my appetite for this meal and was looking forward to the experience. The restaurant is located on the right side of the Waldorf Astoria Hotel. We entered through the first set of glass doors, then saw a hostess motion to us close the doors behind us so we could avoid the cold draft from entering the restaurant. We checked our coats and were seated at the sushi counter. We arrived a little late, but I'm glad we didn't keep the other guests waiting from being served. The space was clean, modern, cozy and chic. Instead of writing about every single course, I will just summarize. We had a very good and memorable experience here. We opted for the classic omakase ($180pp). Next time, we would consider ordering the super omakase ($300pp - includes 15 of the best pieces from the classic omakase plus A5 Wagyu, caviar, white truffle, black truffle, the whole 9). We were served 20 pieces of nigiri sushi and one piece of tomago. We were also gifted a genmaicha and milk tofu crème brûlée for our anniversary celebration. My fiancée also had a mocktail. Our chef was very nice and it was definitely worth the extra money to witness the artistry firsthand. This is a list of what was served in order. Our favorite bites are starred. 1. Chum (Hokkaido white salmon) Salmon 2. Smoked Ocean trout 3. King salmon New Zealand Japanese mustard 4. Japanese sea scallop yuzu chili sea salt* 5. Japanese squid 6. Maryland crab 7. Japanese butter fish 8. Golden eye snapper 9. Japanese sardine* 10. Yellowtail* 11. Japanese tiger shrimp 12. Black skipjack* 13. Akami blue fin tuna 14. Soy marinated akami 15. Medium fatty tuna, shu toro 16. Fatty tuna, otoro* 17. Uni 18. Ikura Salmon roe 19. Fatty tuna hand roll - Sushi fatty tuna roll with the best seaweed from Japan* 20. Salt water Eel 21. Tomago egg cake
Be the first to ReplyOutstanding omakase, amazing flavors, perfect service.
Wonderful place to celebrate a birthday!
Be the first to ReplyFood was amazing.
Service is as incredible. My friend is left handed and they adjusted the plat to accommodate her. My water glass was never empty. I will be back. This place deserves two Michelin stars.

I've been to Sushi Nakazawa three times and every time has been absolutely fantastic. Every bite of fish is so fresh and just melts in your mouth, paired with perfectly cooked sushi rice and crisp nori being the cherry on top. My personal favorites are always the chum salmon, Hokkaido uni, and chutoro. Yes, kind of basic but it's just that dang good!! Everything else in between is also lovely. I definitely also think it's worth paying the extra $30 to sit at the chef's counter versus the dining room. For our most recent visit, Chef Charles No was serving us (who was super sweet) and special shout out to Jeremy Halker who was a phenomenal sommelier! Jeremy took us on a wonderful journey sampling different sakes while also kindly educating us on their origins, production processes, and flavor profiles. We couldn't have asked for a better experience for our anniversary. Can't wait until our next time dining in!

Be the first to ReplyWe've been to Sushi Nakazawa in NYC, and we were a little
We've been to Sushi Nakazawa in NYC, and we were a little disappointed that we were unable to see or have missed Chef Daisuke Nakazawa the several times we've been. As everyone knows, Chef Nakazawa is known as the celebrated apprentice of Chef Jiro Ono for many years in Japan. Making reservations was easy, and we were lucky enough to sit at the center of the counter, which technically are the best seats you can get. There are two omakases that are offered - the Classic and the Chef's; I recommend in getting the latter. I also recommend in getting all the supplements to enhance your tasting (the Gold Osetra Caviar, the A5 Miyazaki Wagyu, the A5 Miyazaki WAgyu Futomaki, and the Uni Flight).Out of the pieces, we enjoyed the Kama Toro and the fatty tuna set.Overall, the omakase is a good experience, but I feel that NYC's location is slightly better; the price point, honestly, doesn't justify the consistency in quality. We have been other other Michelin-starred omakases in which we've enjoyed much more and have used as the standard. The interior seemed like a deja vu of the NYC's location - minimalistic with clean lines. Service has always been friendly and welcoming!Parking can be difficult, but there are garages and valet nearby.+choose the Chef's omakase+order all the supplements to enhance your meal+friendly service+difficult parking in the area - garages and valet available
Be the first to ReplyAmazing Omakase experience! Easily one of the best
Amazing Omakase experience! Easily one of the best restaurants in DC. The fish and flavors were excellent. 22 courses with the add-on (A5 Wagyu and black truffle). Great selection and variety - from classic toro and uni to kinmedai and anago. Wagyu add-on strongly recommended! Be sure to book a counter seat. Our chef was exceptional and very entertaining. It wouldn't have been the same experience.

a great omakase place, had a great experiencethe sushi was obviously great, altho i was so full by the middle of the whole course that i feel like i didn't fully appreciate it. did a little add-on for wagyu piece and two other pieces which were also good. the service was fine as well as the food. i had a reservation for a table seating instead of the bar but the server still explained the courses well. overall totally recommend if you are searching for a good omakase place in the dmv area. i'll have to go to the nyc location as well soon.
Be the first to ReplyIn this area there's not a lot of high end omakase tbh, so
In this area there's not a lot of high end omakase tbh, so I'm sure most end up here after looking around and seeing just this place and sushi taro as the two real contenders (I'm sure more so now that taro lost their star during covid due to closing down etc). I remember nakazawa being pretty decent when it first opened, the head chef came down from the nyc location I believe and he was super personable and made the night fairly lively and fun. Fast foward a few years to 2023 and... idk it's lost a lot of its appeal. Sure if ur looking for a fancy, dress-up-y style place, this is for sure it. But other than that the atmosphere was quite and cold? Not much conversation anywhere to be found and that to me is half the fun of the chefs counter, not to mention the bump up in price. Before at like 150 ish? A head, it was easily justifiable as the quality alone merits the price point as it was not terribly high. Now tho it seems like closer to 400 for events (Valentine's Day in my case) and a hundred less for regular days? At this price point you need to do more than just have fresh fish, and sadly the new nakazawa (new head chef and staff?) doesn't have it. Especially when compared to Taro that sits at the 350 range for special and 250 for regular but is pretty much an AYCE towards the end + it's homey vibes and personable chefs ..... just can't justify nakazawa anymore. Tldr; if your looking for a stiff cold elegant high class restaurant feel + price point, come here you will get just that. Otherwise go hit up any of the other omakase places lol (don't just by who maintained their Michelin star post covid just yet :p the greats will rise again hehe)

This place was good, don't get me wrong, but the price for the quality/experience is definitely not justifiable. I reserved a place at the sushi bar to have dinner alone and really take in the experience. The sushi chef didn't ever really tell us what they were giving us, the space between pieces seemed long, and the quality of the fish was just ok. I ordered the uni flight for $50 but it never arrived. Unless you're swimming in extra cash, don't waste your time. Even if you are swimming in $ to spend, try Sushi Ogawa, it was a much better experience.
Be the first to ReplyPossibly the best sushi I had.
You can actually taste the difference between all the different types of fish unlike all the other sushi places. With each types of salmon and toro, you can actually taste the difference in the fish, whether they are smoky, salty-sweet, citrus fruity, or otherwise; and there's different kinds of smoky taste especially for the salmon. Additionally, the tamago is sweet, and other fishes taste different and wonderful as well. I also enjoy the pudding and the tea that comes with it. The uni, my favorite dish, is the best, and with the add-on, it is crunchy with the nori and wasabi. I also had the wagyu, which taste better than the wagyu from other places that I've had, but still like spiced beef from KBBQ nonetheless. One thing that I disliked is that the eel has a lot of bones, but I won't dock a star for just that one thing. The servers are very nice and does a very good job in terms of providing service like all other Michelin restaurants.Overall 8.5/10 for the food, rounding up for the service.

We had an awesome time at Sushi Nakazawa at the chef's counter. We opted for the super omakase serving, which featured additional non-sushi specials. This included an uni tasting, monk fish liver, crab chawanmushi, and several other offerings in addition to the traditional 15 sushi pieces. If you are an adventurous eater, I would recommend the super omakase ($300). But if you are new to sushi/raw fish or more hesitant with new foods, go for the regular omakase ($180). The service was great. We were seated at the counter promptly, and our waiter explained our options. The sushi chef was friendly and smiley. He explained every dish to us and told us his favorites. We opted to do one sake pairing and a green tea. My husband loved the sake. They paired with the pieces delightfully. Here are my thoughts on the additional courses and the sushi:Toro Caviar Monaka- delicious and light. Very mild flavor. Nice crisp to the wafer. Black Skipjack Sashimi- flavorful and freshSeabream with Karasumi- so tasty and refreshing. Icefish- loved the unique taste; I had never had anything like this before. Cod milt- very creamy; not my favorite texture. Monk fish liver- very unique. This was rich and melt-in-your mouth creamy. I was not a big fan of this, but it was cool to try. My husband liked it!Blue crab chawanmushi- this had a very mild flavor but the texture of a soup and flan combined. I did not particularly enjoy this one. The three types of Uni- Uni is not my favorite, but I tried all three kinds. They were all pretty good. The sauce and the sprinkled salt really added to the flavor. I liked the Maine uni the best. The sushi itself was the best part! I would have been just as happy doing the regular omakase and skipping the extras. The sushi was exquisite. I loved the chum salmon, tiger prawn, bluefin tuna (all three fat levels), and the half beak. Every single piece was perfected. The ginger between the bites was the perfect palate cleanser. The sushi was served pretty rapidly, and it was so fun to see it made right in front of us. The chef also encouraged us to eat with our fingers! The dinner lasted about an hour and a half total (pretty quick), and we enjoyed the experience so much! I would definitely come back and do the regular omakase next time. One downside: they do not have many options for non-alcoholic beverages (just tea or water).
Be the first to ReplyBest omakase experience I've ever had.
There are about 20+ pieces so you won't leave hungry. We sat in the dining room as the bar seats get reserved super quickly and it was completely fine (the food gets brought out 3-4 pieces at a time rather than one at a time) - would probably still favor grabbing the bar seats, but sitting in the dining room didn't detract from the experience at all. A must try for sushi enthusiasts!!

This was a fantastic Michelin star experience! I highly recommend making reservations 2 weeks prior. The staff was friendly and knowledgeable- Megan was especially nice and answered all of our questions. They did not rush our meal and made us feel welcome. There were 7 courses of nigiri (20 pieces) and a dessert course in the classic omakase. Our favorites were:Seared otoroOtoroSmoked trout Mackerel Prawn Yellow tail We loved chef's progression of the meal. It was very cool to have a salmon course, tuna course, uni course etc. so you could taste the difference in each type of fish and preparation. We also tried the A5 Japanese wagyu supplement which was amazing. The dessert was amazing - a panna cotta like custard with Japanese brown sugar syrup and soybean powder with green tea. It was the perfect end to the meal! I highly recommend this dining experience!
Be the first to ReplyDisappointment.
.. I was expecting the chef be cutting and making the sushi in front of me, but all the fishes were pre-cutted in their back kitchen. Very small portion for the price too.. Do not recommend.
Be the first to ReplyHands down the best sushi experience I've ever had.
My husband and I came here for our 7 year dating anniversary (yes we still celebrate our dating anniversary so we have an excuse to go out ). We sat at the counter for the Omakase experience which seems like the best way to go because there are certain cuts that are only served to those sitting at the counter. Every single piece of nigiri was phenomenal--most of the cuts are flown in from Japan so it's no surprise it's all amazing. We were well taken care of by our chef Jeff. Jeff was super easy to chat with and tolerated our small talk while also managing the conversation and requests of the high energy finance bros that were seated next to us. I kept saying how each piece was "really good" and felt obligated to apologize for not having enough adjectives to describe how amazing everything really was. This really is the perfect place to come for a special occasion (or a regular day if you have the means) and I know I will be planning to come back again
Be the first to ReplyI went to Nakazawa last night and ordered the premiere
I went to Nakazawa last night and ordered the premiere Omakase, with the additional caviar and Uni flight. I originally sat in the dinning room but when the first three dishes were a severe disappointment (because the rice was cold and dry) the server asked me if I wanted to move to the sushi bar. Bad rice can ruin the entire dish. I did take her up on the offer just to be told that they would have to up charge me at the Sushi bar (after I had already moved to the bar). I went with it just hoping that the remaining dishes would be better. The dishes were only slightly better and the rice was still cold and dry. I have been to high-end sushi places in NY, SF, LA, Tokyo, etc. It blows my mind when a restaurant of this caliber can't make sushi rice properly. It needs to be fresh, at room temperature (or slightly warm) and soft. This was cold, dry and undercooked. Even some of the fish was cold as if they just pulled it out of the refrigerator. The couple of items that were torched were decent and I had to order more sake just to try and enjoy the meal. The lack of flavor and creativity was also a disappointment. Needless to say, I still tipped 25% because the server was nice to move me to the sushi bar (yet still up-charged me - LOL). That should tell you something about this place. My recommendation would be to avoid Nakazawa.-DC and save your money for the NY location.
