Sushi Nakazawa New York Reviews from The Last Year
This was the best sushi I've ever had.
I"ve had some really good sushi at Shiro in Seattle and and Takai by Koshiba in Bellevue which by the way is more expensive than this place. This was better. I was curious about this place based on the movie Jiro dreams of sushi. I didn't recognize the sushi chef and later on. I looked at the website to read about him, but I didn't see his picture on there. I feel like at a level of restaurant like this. there should be write-up like a Playbill about the people involved with the dining experience so I could know more about them. We came a couple minutes late which I felt really bad about, they texted me right as we pulled up. The other people at the counter were already sitting. There were three other spots besides the two of us at the counter. We were assisted into the bar seat and you have to climb up onto the seat it's very comfortable and they push you in. It's a little confusing but it worked smoothly. We ordered tea and the hojicha kept me up the whole night. I haven't been drinking caffeine lately, but it was delicious. It was from Kyoto and I had this huge regret of not buying any teas when I was in Kyoto. I had no idea such delicious And delicate tea existed. It was kind of like a Saturday Night Live skit because as soon as I drank a sip or two of tea would come in from behind me and get my little tea kettle and pour another sip in my glass. Our waiter was helpful and kind and, I regretted not coming earlier to talk about the history of the restaurant with him. He seemed to be very knowledgeable. There were 21 courses and we ordered three extra, the caviar, the Uni and the Wagyu. My husband has had a lot of Wagyu and he said this was the best bite of Wagyu he's ever had in his life. It was $40 for the sushi size portion and honestly if I were to have someone who this is the way I would've done it I asked for no wasabi on my sushi, and I saw a little cloud of disappointment come over the waiters eyes. He told me there was no spicy horseradish in their wasabi and try it and if I didn't like it, then the chef would adjust and you know what, he was right! I definitely not want to want to mess with the integrity of a dish and I've accidentally had horseradish at sushi places, and this was totally doable. As the meal went on, I also asked for a little bit less rice because I was getting too full. I didn't really know if I should just start eating the fish off the top because I was getting full and leave the rice or if I should ask them for less rice And slightly less I'm sure it happens all the time. I'm not sure if it threw off what they did, maybe I got less fish because of it the chef was polite answering my questions and after the fact, I wish I asked him a little bit more about the sushi. it was amazing watching him, his hands must be insured for millions. I would have liked a written menu next to me of what I was eating because it was a little bit hard to understand exactly what fish he was saying we were eating I'm not good with Understanding at all. I liked how he told each and every person what it was he was putting on their plate. This one time my husband left some rice behind. I just kinda dropped off the sushi and was left on that plate and the chef got a little piece of gauze and smoothly Swiped the rice off of the plate so it was clean. I was pretty taken with the whole process. At one point during the dinner I saw at the end of the bar waiters were coming over to the end of the bar and putting plates down and putting in an order request there... I saw somebody come by and noticed that two plates put down were askew. I saw him questioned the waiter about it and the waiter said that he didn't put them down like that. They must've gotten nudged. Somehow it was a funny exchange to see, and it made me realize they were really striving for perfection here. I asked the chef for restaurant recommendations, and upon researching what he said was very pleased with what he recommended. I would eat here every time I come through New York and I would not come for anything less than the counter experience.
My first omakase experience after watching the documentary
My first omakase experience after watching the documentary Will always remember that. And chef is super nice too
The tuna flight, from blue fin to chu toro to otoro,
The tuna flight, from blue fin to chu toro to otoro, amazing stuff. One of my best omakase experiences ever. This is where you wanna go all the time. Would eat here every night if I could. Don't skip the wagyu, trust.
My experience was rather disappointing.
I took my husband here for dinner to celebrate his birthday. We did the lounge counter omakase. The sushi is mediocre, nothing special compared to our past experience at Sushi Ishikawa and Sushi by M. We were expecting creativity and that wow factor after taking a bite. We were not very impressed. No truffle, no wagyu, no gold flakes, no bell and whistle for $190 per person omakase. On top of it, the sushi chef used the SAME hand towel to clean his hands, wipe the cutting board, clean his knife, and wiping all guests plate after each coarse. This is pretty unsanitary and not appetizing.

Reservations are released 2 weeks in advance - snag one!
Reservations are released 2 weeks in advance - snag one! Michelin omakase spot in the West Village. There is a very nice waiting area when you walk in as the prior time slot is wrapping up. You can choose between two counters or their dining room area (different price and not the same omakase experience in the dining room area). You can also add wagyu or uni. Great service - the sushi chef and the staff are very attentive. As it is 20 courses, you can also ask for less rice, and the sushi chef will also ask you if you want less rice when you have halfway through the experience, which is what I opted for. The experience takes about 2 hours and we were left full afterwards. They provide chopsticks but I would recommend eating it with your hands. The fish is extremely fresh, and the sushi chef describes the fish and any other seasoning. We added one piece of wagyu and it was delicious! They end the courses with tamago and a creme brulee. The whole experience is definitely worth the price and we would come again (for special occasions).
a fantastic omakase place, and my very first one a few
a fantastic omakase place, and my very first one a few years back! it didn't seem like it was a lot of food at first glance but i was so full and satisfied by the end of the meal. for the price, its great value and quality especially for NYC. the service is great as well, very attentive and helpful. a great experience!
Food and service were incredible but i HAVE to mention the
Food and service were incredible but i HAVE to mention the ambiance because i see no mentions of it - it feels so strangely corporate and sterile - almost like it used to he an office or something and they kept the decor and added a sushi bar. I was mind blown by how wildly disconnected the food & design of the place was. Wondering if anyone else felt this when going. It would be a knock out place if they added some better lighting and ambience
Bday wife

Dinner review.
Chef's omakase. Ordered: Chef's omakase Sake pairing Supplement - A5 Wagyu Beef Supplement - Kinki x Krug Overall, "I'm a fan."
Finally tried this sushi gem and it was worth it.
Omakase is always a little treat but you're paying for the attentive service, attention to detail, and the freshness of every sushi piece. I loved the wagyu addition and the Japanese crème brûlée dessert as well. The ambience was super intimate and perfect for a date or a solo night.
It was my husband's birthday and I thought our reservation
It was my husband's birthday and I thought our reservation was at 6, not 5. Long story short, I was, inexcusably, 40 minutes late. Instead of telling us to take a hike, they accommodated us and could not have been more gracious. They saved his birthday (and my butt!). Forever grateful that they saved the day.
Sushi was plentiful and quality was good, but not amazing.
You have to be ready to eat FAST given the quantity of pieces, and come starving. We had lunch and were hungry but not famished, so started to slow down toward the end. It is 21 pieces after all. However, the chef didn't try to accommodate for the slower pace and tried to get us to hurry up, and even made facial expressions and comments to the other chefs at how slow we were eating. Other diners also got lengthy explanations about the different types of fish and their chefs even showed them the fish, etc. while ours just dumped the sushi on the plate without comment other than "mackerel" or "sea bream" etc. One of the most stressful and unhappy eating experiences we've had.
Best ever, I can see why it was featured in so many
Best ever, I can see why it was featured in so many different shows and movies. A bit overpriced, but then again it's NYC so it's not so bad
Finally got to try one of the most renowned omakase sushi
Finally got to try one of the most renowned omakase sushi spot, @sushinakazawa, and it was delicious! Love these authentic restaurants that serve fresh and high quality ingredients, and no fancy decorations or toppings to distract. For a better experience, I do wish they could be more proactive about cleaning the sushi board between pieces, and refilling the cups.
Glad to check this place off my bucket list! Really nice
Glad to check this place off my bucket list! Really nice place, but the sushi was mediocre at best- you can definitely get the same quality of sushi for a much better price. I don't regret coming here because it had been on my list of places to try, but I wouldn't come back. The place is easy to miss- I'm pretty sure I walked by it a handful of times and didn't know it existed. Decor was nice and the chef was great- explained everything in detail. Highly recommend getting the beef wagyu as an additional item!
Be aware!
Be aware! This place has some nerve! We visited there to celebrate the birth of our son, we got a gift card from our friends which we used to pay part of the bill and completed the rest with our card. We added a nice gratuity of 20% (what we thought was 20%) but ended up paying DOUBLE what we had to pay since they just "assumed" we wanted to pay a 50% tip and charged our card for the entire amount AND the gift card. We saw the charge only a few days later, it was impossible to get a hold of the place and when I finally did - they said they could do NOTHING with it since they already paid their employees. (????) I would expect a fancy, $ 300-per-person place like Nakazawa, to be able to figure it out and compensate for the mistake they made with their employees and not take it out of their customer's pockets. ***Just make sure you check the bill 3 times before you leave*** We will NOT be returning.

Came here for my boyfriend's bday dinner.
Sashimi were fresh and liked how they substituted the items we requested not to have in the course. Staff delivered elegant and professional service. I'd say it's a little overrated for what they're advertised. But if you're only concerned about the freshness of the fish. This place would definitely one of the omakase you must try.
The omakase menu was absolutely delicious.
Each piece of nigiri was excellent- fresh, buttery, and did not need anything additional. 10/10. The service was impeccable. Ambiance is romantic. Must try restaurant- top quality
My girlfriend and I had an incredible night.
The ambiance, service, and food were all excellent. Loved the add ons and the sake pairing took our night to the next level. Both of us were so impressed and it was a special night! Unfortunately, the entire experience was tainted when we received the bill and noticed a 3% "interchange fee" for using a credit card. This fee wasn't disclosed on Resy, the website, or the menu. And to be clear, it's not about the money! Obviously, we spent a ton on this dinner. But the surprise fee at the end just gave us the feeling of being nickel and dimed. I'd like to encourage Sushi Nakazawa's management to review the New York State laws currently on the books pertaining to credit card surcharges as well as those that take effect in a few days (Feb 11, 2024). Don't ruin a good night with a sneaky credit card fee.
After 10 years in New York, I finally made it to the famed
After 10 years in New York, I finally made it to the famed Sushi Nakazawa. A 21 piece omakase for $180, this has to be the absolute best value omakase in NYC considering all factors. What an amazing experience from beginning to end. The service and ambiance are so refined, I really felt like I was back in Japan. We had a 12:45 reservation for lunch on a Saturday (still 21 pieces for $180). We were seated exactly on time in very comfortable seats at the sushi counter. To start, you choose from a list of additions to the omakase- we added the Wagyu which was worth it. Please do yourself a favor and get the sake pairing for $90! My math, you're already saving $100 on the excellent value that Nakazawa offers... The sake pairing really made this experience wonderful. With every few bites of sushi, they brought a very cool glass of sake. A pink sake, creamy sake... everything was delicious and well curated. The sushi, of course, is excellent. My favorite bites are always the tuna, but the scallop is a close second. What a lovely, memorable experience. I couldn't recommend this more.
Excellent lunch
Excellent omakase lunch! Everything was very creatively prepared. Service was great. Being at the counter is the best experience. Recommend the truffle supplement, which I think was served on a piece of toro. The owner happened to be eating with a guest alongside us, which was cool.
Sushi Nakazawa’s omakase experience sets a very high standard!
Chef Nakazawa’s twenty-course omakase owill blow you away with the assortment of fish and the hidden flavors that you will savor for as long as you possibly can. Service was impeccable and the champaign list made me extremely happy! It is not an inexpensive meal, but the experience is priceless!
Disappointment
Japanese cuisine demands harmony on everything. Design, service, noise, and endless things is necessary to get the right harmony. There is nothing to say for the chef since everything was good, but the rest needs a lot of improvement. Servers needs to learn that client is not a student that can be looked from up. Arrogance has no place in any restaurant even with a Michelin star. With low ceilings and big A/C units you feel the wind. Tables are to high for the banches. Elevator music affects the volume of sound badly. Whole decoration has to be reset to get the harmony and serenity. It is the only restaurant that I know who charges 3% extra for paying by credit card. No Apple Pay, no contactless.

I have a notice stating that my bid has been accepted and is awaiting transfer. The reservation is for the 18th, but the “moderator” said he will confirm booking by the 28th. Is this an indicator that I may not have a reservation?

Hey @EvocativeFold67, welcome to appointmenttrader! Once the reservation is in your portfolio, you definitely own the timeslot, the review team would not have approved the trade if the reservation wasn't confirmed - so you are going :-) Judging from your post you bid today and are going tomorrow - don't worry as long as you initiated the name transfer, you are good - the transfer service has to work with the opening hours of the reservation team of the respective venue. You will likely see the transfer confirmation a couple hours before your reservation time.
