Couples night out
Sushi Kame has long been one of our favorite restaurants. Everything about the dining experience is wonderful. We’ve been going for years and have had just about everything on the menu. The food is always delicious. Sushi Kame is quite popular. If you have after dinner plans, consider going to eat earlier. The sushi is made fresh and to order. Therefore, on busier nights, you may find the restaurant full and you’ll need to wait for a table. For me, this is the sign of a very good restaurant.
Be the first to ReplyHungry and embarrassed. True sushi fans look elsewhere.
Waited nearly 1.5 hours for our food in a half empty restaurant on a Thursday night. After watching other later patrons get served before our party of 3, we finally asked the waitress to check on our order. After our long-awaited sushi dinners finally showed up, it looked like some rookie person threw our sushi together with the rice crumbling all around. When we brought it to the manager's attention (including the ridiculous wait time), the sushi chef overheard us and started yelling across the restaurant in front of all the customers. We apologized to the chef and tried to explain, but the manager then turned on us and said, "You can either eat and pay full price or get up and leave." Hungry, but now embarrassed and upset, we just all got up and left. Horrible experience from people with obviously no care for customer service and no care for providing a good dining experience. Many more options in Champaign-Urbana area. Go somewhere else!
Be the first to ReplyIt makes me sad ...
I want so badly to give Sushi Kame a good review. As I travel around the Midwest, I am always searching for good Japanese sushi. The Japanese aesthetic is strongly represented here. I don't feel as though I am in a Chinese, or Korean, or Thai restaurant trying to pretend to be Japanese. The miso soup tastes 'right', the menu lists only Japanese specialties (other than the countless American-style rolls.) That is a wonderful sign! But ... the chef ignores the customers, looking stressed and over-worked even during my lunchtime visits. There is no evidence of recognition of me after multiple visits (very un-Japanese), and no acknowledgment of my identifiably 'purist' ordering pattern. (No spicy tuna rolls for me!) The waitstaff had no idea what sake is/was/could be ... they too are obviously pressured and rushed (for God's sake, there are only ten tables here to cover this evening!) ... and most importantly, they served me fish on the verge of being spoiled. The hamachi had that fishy smell and taste that implied it has been sitting for days ... the frozen maguro was crude ... the dai (snapper) dull ... the ikura (salmon roe) flavorless ... the saba (mackerel) nasty. I really enjoyed the fresher, more enthusiastic Korean aesthetic at Sakanaya more, a radical statement for somebody with my purist sushi attitudes. I can only hope that Sushi Kame improves, but I was not encouraged.

My wife and I decided to eat here for a date night. We both like sushi, but we have not eaten much of it. We ordered the white dragon and the Rainbow sushi. We liked both of them very much. The service was good and quick. It was a very enjoyable meal.

Sushi Kame is a restaurant I keep going back to over many years. Sushi is always fresh. All of the other Japanese food is really good too. Prices are reasonable and it's not as pretentious as some of the other sushi spots in town. I love a hot green tea, some tempura and a love love roll. This is a nice spot to dine alone with a good book, a quick lunch with friends or a dinner date. Sometimes they can seem a little short staffed when it gets busy, but they always manage to care for everyone. A family favorite.

My friend goes here often and I had never been so I decided to try it. I got a bento box with tempura. It was delicious. I also got a sushi roll. It was a tempura roll. Between the box and the roll I had to get a doggie bag. I was stuffed. It was all delicious. I really enjoyed the food and atmosphere. It was also reasonably priced. I would definitely go again.

We love this family restaurant and enjoy their diverse menu, fabulous food and service all for a great price. When traveling I order the same dishes so I can compare restaurants to each other. I have found that Sushi Kame's dishes are excellent and am always glad to travel to Champaign for great authentic Japanese food.
Be the first to ReplyPretty Average Sushi
The staff here was very nice and helpful and made sure we knew they were busy and orders were backed up. The sushi itself was pretty average and lacked any sort of presentation, creativity or real flavor. We'll probably try someone else next time we want sushi.

I take my frugal family members here because it is a good value on the pocketbook, and the food is delicious. I am 100% certain we will continue to eat at this restaurant. The servers are also very friendly and efficient.
