Delicious sushi prepared by a master
Very fine sushi. Only 6 diners and a chef and assistant who were perfect hosts. Some of the dishes had sensational tastes up with the best I’ve experienced. An example was the puffer fish, which was grilled and melted in my mouth. The chef’s recommended sake was very good. For the quality of food and the very small number of diners, it is also good value for money.

The food was very good! The only issue was that I was charged Y 33.000 for the food and one Asahi beer . The owner is charging more if you are a foreigner. Be careful!!

We had a wonderful experience at Matsudaya on all fronts: the food was exquisite, the atmosphere was intimate and unique, and the chef and staff were charming and very accommodating. Yes, there are a few rules to follow (no phones on the table where you eat, no crossed legs or arms around you partners, etc) but they are there for respect to the chef and your fellow patrons. Our group asked him many questions and had a very conversational dinner with him and each other, and we were allowed to take pictures and videos of the food and process. I have a shrimp allergy that they were very careful of, and were so attentive anytime we needed anything refilled. We also loved that they pickle their own ginger; it was the best we’ve ever had, not to mention the sushi also being the best we’ve ever had (either in Japan or in Seattle where we live). Don’t hesitate to book a meal here, you won’t be disappointed!

We went on a Sunday in April 2023. Dinner length ~100 minutes (I'm getting increasingly unimpressed with a 3+ hr tasting menu…) Courses: ~16. Tamago was last. Beware: apparently taxi service Sunday nights is very spotty…some folks were aching to leave and had to wait to catch a break. For me this was 8/10 sushi: Some of the best I've ever had, unique things were done, watching him work was interesting, and his wife and daughter are gems. He did some things technically (flame broiled swordfish, grilled giant Hokkaido scallops, made fresh wasabi) that were impressive in the sense that they were happening concurrently while creating another course. Nothing fantastically outstanding, but impressive nonetheless. Quality of ingredients was impeccable. Creative use of items/technique that I would not have thought worked together. Some things missed the mark of perfection. My wife thinks this was 9/10. Im really glad we read the “eggshell” review to get us in the chef’s mindset. Not speaking Japanese, I can only assume his mindset: he wants to focus on preparing food and doesn’t really want patrons to be loud or unfocused. There are literally dozens of TV shows where people tune in specifically to watch someone expertly craft a dish, so why ruin it with a bunch of nonsense that you could discuss elsewhere… But… of course: its a restaurant and i’m sure there are tons of folks just wanting to eat great food and have a good time with their significant other. If this is you: you may not have the best time…but you will eat great food.

The food is exquisite, the daughter is charming, the chef is a tyrannt who has a list of rules for diners: face forward, no cell phones on the counter, don’t tear the paper around the chopsticks, don’t talk to much to other diners. We got the impression that he would have been happier doing something else. To bad, because, again, the food was great.

We were 4 of the lucky 6 guests in total to visit this restaurant for dinner. The chef is really nice, and so is the sushi/sashimi, it’s really remarkably good! You can google the restaurant and make a reservation via his homepage or via myconciergejapan. Highly recommendable!

This review is sooooo long overdue! I thought I wrote one back in 2016 but, can’t find it.
So here I go...
It Was my 65th birthday and I wanted to have a very special Omakase sushi in Kyoto!! Was staying at the HOTEL MUME and the wonderful staff recommended. They made the reservation for me months in advance.
The husband and wife owner were so sweet. Yes, it is cozy 6 seat only Restaurant. We loved all the sushi made for us. We also made friends with the 4some that came in after us. All Friends from different parts of Japan getting together.
All the pictures Gion Matsudaya are pretty much what we had😋🥰.
I still think of this special meal and ambience. Chef Matsuda, for my birthday gave me special green tea blended for their restaurant!❤️
Amazing Sushi from Gion Matsudaya.
Amazing Sushi from Gion Matsudaya. Very intimate and small setting. Place is lovely and you can watch the chef prepare all pieces. A plus is that the chef will give you the names in English. Owner/ chef, wife and daughter are very pleasant in this family business. Very fresh fish and the taste and texture make it one of the best I have ever tried. Definitely a must go if in Kyoto.

An intimate 7 seats restaurant. All seats are at the counter and you get to see the chef in action. Chef was quiet but friendly, communicating with us in adequate English. We enjoyed the meal tremendously. We also got to try some cuts of fish which we don't get so commonly locally such as Buri sushi. Visiting a good sushiya is a rite of passage in Kyoto. We booked our seats through Pocket Concierge.

Very enjoyable date for me and my girlfriend. Very intimate space just us and chef Matsuda. Every bite, was a delight 😊 We paid 36000 yen for the whole course, so while expensive you also get what u pay for. 5/5

We had the pleasure of dining with chef Matsudaya during our visit to Kyoto. We opted for the sushi + option. It’s hard to overstate what an exceptional dining experience this was.
The preparation, freshness, and taste of the sushi were amongst the very best we have ever had. Each course had simple and well-balanced seasoning to perfectly pair with the fish. Chef Matsudaya explains each course and speaks excellent English.
This is a family run restaurant which made the experience that much more authentic.
Highly recommended!
Michelin-quality food, Incredible experience
My wife and I ate at Gion Matsudaya for dinner in May 2019 while we were staying in Kyoto. We booked it on a whim last minute, wanting to have one very nice sushi meal before we left for another city. It was, without a doubt, phenomenal. As we walked by the restaurant 10 minutes before our reservation, the chef was outside cleaning the front of the building and preparing it for dinner. When we returned a few minutes later, we walked into an adorable place, with just six seats at a small sushi counter.
We learned quickly that the entire staff is Chef Matsudaya, his wife, and his daughter - a true family business! As we sat, chatting politely with his daughter, we watched as the chef prepared dozens of pieces of fish, getting ready for the night's meal. When you book the reservation, you have two choices - sushi or full meal (which includes sashimi and a few prepared dishes). We chose the sushi only meal, which gives you about 15 pieces spread throughout the night.
The chef prepares each person's bite individually, before moving on to the next. So in addition to your meal being properly spread out (instead of given to you on one giant plate), you get the unique opportunity to really watch the care and precision that goes into the art of sushi-making. The food was indescribable - so delicious and fresh, it is difficult to put into words. The experience of watching a Michelin-star chef work was perhaps even better.
By the end of the meal, all of us were chatting with the chef and his family, asking questions, learning more about his work and the process that goes into creating such a meal. The family was incredibly friendly and a pleasure to spend the night with. If you're looking for a high-end sushi meal while you're in Kyoto, do not pass up the opportunity to eat at Gion Matsudaya. You will forever remember the meal.
Last night in Kyoto
I normally don’t write reviews, but I think this deserves one! Although we were super impressed in the beginning, especially of the quality of the fish, ultimately we felt the dinner concluded with weak ending. Our meal ended quiet abruptly, almost unexpectedly, where it felt like the chef was just done for the night. All in all, the quality was very high but the amount was disappointing.

One star Michelin sushi restaurant, discreetly tucked in a Gion alley. Inside is pristine pale woods and rice paper screens, leading to a 6 place open kitchen bar that faces the chef and his very long sharp knives. A small glass top box hold that evening's dinner; fatty tuna, octopus, shrimp, squid, bonita and more. Each course is deftly cut, prepared and served and we are instructed how to best enjoy the offerings. A really unique and delicious experience

We booked Gion Matsudaya thanks to recommendation of our hotel. We had to been to other Michelin star sushi restaurants in Japan, and Matsudaya was by far the best. The chef was friendly, and spoke some English. We did the “only sushi” course, which actually consists of more sushi than the sushi and small dishes course. I would be surprised if you could walk into this restaurant without a reservation, as we had made one a few months in advance. We look forward to returning one day!
